I disagree. Without chrono-trigger, breath of fire, and dungeon siege my brother might have been illiterate. And around here they let illiterate people "graduate" from high-school all the time.
But if there were upgrades that increased the strength of the bronze, decreased the weight of the wooden pole and made your troops do lots more arm-strength training then that info would suggest you invest in those upgrades instead of just coming straight out an telling you what to do. Then maybe after defeating your first opponent who'd advanced to big metal shields you unlock an achievement and a "300" styled 2 minute video about bronze forging, spear tactics and training methods.
I'm sure they could find somebody with 105 days worth of tv & movies on their laptop to lend to the astronauts so they have some entertainment. Surely somebody on slashdot has 365 days worth of porn on an external hard drive they could donate to NASA? If you add in a Kindle for when they're tired of video they can keep completely entertained for the whole trip!
Problem for me was that the 3 people I play most games with tend to be in my house most of the time. Telling them to spend $60 and then another $16 a month and get in their car and drive 6 miles back to their house so we can "play together" is fucking bullshit.
If 3 systems can play UT3 on my home network (1 only have 1 at the moment)
and 4 people can play halo on 1 x-box on 1 screen (I can also make UT3 play split-screen on my pc)
then I don't see why we can't have 2 people playing WoW on 1 machine on 1 account.
I'm sure there are a lot of kids out there whose parents didn't get them the game because it would cost too much fighting between their siblings and even if every child had their on PC it would be too expensive to buy a separate copy and pay a separate subscription for each kid!
WOW! I completely forgot about Generations Arena. I thought it died or something! (...I think I now regret spending all that money on a 4870 last week)
I find UT3 to be overly detailed and greatly dislike the fact that it's art direction makes it feel like the neglected bastard half-brother of Gears of War instead of an actual sequel to either ut99 or ut2k4.
I disagree with your opinions on the character and weapon execution but I agree that they should have considered fleshing out a bit more of the details because if you look close at the environments and characters (wearing your 1999 goggles) they really are great concepts and it would have been nice if they were updated to a ut2004 level of detail.
The double-tapping thing didn't appear until UT2003.
Quake 1, 2, & 3 are very comparable to UT99.
Deathmatch is deathmatch and I'd say UT99 deathmatch was even more fast-paced, random, frantic, fun, and spammy than any other game.
The quake games had the element of bunny hopping that became a core element of many advanced players strategies while UT2003 added the strategic element of powerup pills that allowed you to activate a special-ability once you collected 100 of them.
There aren't that many people in existence who can play at the level of those in these tournaments.
I've heard they're working on a decent match-making system so people of comparable skill should _always_ wind up playing together.
The Hellgate cut-scenes looked good. If they extended them into a full length feature with better dialogue and a good enough story they could make some cash.
Actually, the 3 new star wars movies helped me to more clearly identify what I liked about the older movies. After watching the older movies again it's even MORE clear to me why the new movies sucked.
I watch at least one of the three Indiana Jones movies every year (not always intentionally) and every time, I enjoy them.
The first thing that JUMPS out at me when I see the new Indiana Jones trailer is that, just like Star Wars, it doesn't "look" the same. Either someone ran some dumb post processing color unbalancing on it or a lot of it was shot against a green screen or something. In the original films the environments look "normal" like real life. They might not have actually gone to India, Egypt, or South America but it sure looked like they did. I don't get that same vibe from the new trailer.
Consider the part of the trailer where they're being chanced down a stone staircase by tribal warriors. Now think back to the first movie where he was being chased through the jungle by tribal warriors. Ok, now think about Mel Gibson's Apocalypto where the prisoners were being marched through the city and when they guy was being chaced by tribal warriors.
One of these things is not like the other.
yo, wassup dude. Momz put some net nanny thing on the windoze. Upload me sum porns on a dvd yo. ok. $5. I'll give it to you in Word Processing class tomorrow.
kool yo! Do you want 1 movie to play in your dvd player or 9 movies on one disk that will only plac in a computer? both! dummass! lolz
what i started doing was I got this little utility that generated a text file of all filenames/paths on a dvd.
I've got apache, mysql and php running
The utility saves the text files to a folder under the web servers documents and i run a php script that renames the text files with a random number/letter combo, enters every line of text as a unique record in the database parented to the unique name of the dvd itself and I write that unique string on the dvd label.
Its pretty straight forward and only took 2 weekends to get 75% of my stuff labelled.
so now I can just use some basic sql queries in phpmyadmin to find out what which has what I'm looking for.
But in the future I'm just going to buy a bunch of external drives and hook them up to a mac mini.
I have seen many families who at one point had multiple pc's (one for each child). Later as the machines got infected or physically stopped working the would just buy a new system (with monitor/keyboard/mouse) and so they've got a couple old monitors/keyboards/mice just sitting in the garage or closet.
What I'd like to see someone invent is a device where can plug in 1 computer, 5 monitors, 5 external drives, keyboards, mice. And have each user with their own account using the system simultaneously. In this age of quad-core super fast systems and well written, resource efficient linux applications I don't see why this hasn't been done already. Especially when you consider the vast majority of home users only use their computer to browse the web, chat, type simple documents and other simple activities that can be accomplished on systems built in 1995.
Benefits: * This would be most useful for poorer families who can't afford a computer for each child. * All the children would be in the same room where parents could easily monitor their children's activities. * Less use of electricity * Less discarding of perfectly good monitors/keyboards/mice * Schools that only teach office apps anyway can save on the number of systems they have to buy. * Even if schools bought windows they'd have to buy less copies/seats since 'seats' means individual machines.
Actually during the summer between 4th and 5th grade I met a family who every other year made their kids attend summer school so that when regular school started they would be well ahead of everyone else. The benefit the kids saw in this was the freedom to stay home from school sometimes 3 days a week if they felt like it. And even though the missed days had an adverse effect on their report cards due to school rules regarding perfect attendance, they were still the top students in their school up until the 6th grade. So really they worked longer and harder so they could take whole days off to stay at home and play.
From the article: "games will turn kids onto the idea of learning, and eventually lead them back to books."
I normally laugh at these silly suggestions to replace books with software and games but that line there made me realize something. My little brother is far from a good student, but the amount of time and effort and research and reading and not taking he puts into learning the latest video games is at least 5 times more work than he ever puts into book reports, essays, or coursework. Even I actually spent every free moment I could for 5 months mastering Killer Instinct back in the day. I've had jobs doing pc repair, graphic design, web design, and programming and I must honestly say that I would know NOTHING about computers or the jobs I've had that relied on computers if it weren't for: Doom, Quake 1, Duke Nukem, Redneck Rampage, zsnes, mame, mugen, starcraft, sim city, quake 3, half life, descent, unreal, ut99, and others, and the countless mods and scripts and skins other extras related to many of them. PC Games taught me how to tinker, how to learn via trial and error, how to research, the basics of how to code, the power of simple text files, how to fix and upgrade a machine just to play a game, art and design, what makes a user interface useful, how to type, and probably lots of other stuff
on a mac ç = alt+c
= alt+e é = alt+e then e again á = alt+e then a ó = alt+e then o ú = alt+e then u å = alt+a ê = alt+i then e â = alt+i then a ñ = alt+n then n again etc...etc... I think you get the idea
in windows i use Maya and Photoshop a lot and have lots of shortcuts set to use ctrl+alt/shift+ever key surrounding the backspace key and ctrl+alt/shift+pageup,pagedown,home,end,insert, accidentally presssing ctrl+alt+delete doesnt kill all my apps and not let me save in windows.
or, as in my case, it kills the x server and does not send you to a command line. Instead all I get on my monitor is [NO SIGNAL] and then I have to press my reset button:(
-- think about my mouse position before moving a window by its title, but I still invariably end up changing its size instead. I rather like having only one corner (or perhaps the sides, and one corner) used for size, and the top ONLY for moving. ----
uhh... it sounds like you're still thinking about just the borders of the window. I'm talking about anywhere on the ENTIRE window. See this asterisk (*)? Put your mouse over the asterisk, which is likely far from any edge of the window. With your mouse at that asterisks position, with beryl, you can move or resize the entire window...NO thinking about mouse position other than which widow is the mouse currently over.
In that case there is absolutely no NEED for you wife to still be using windows. Switch her to ANYTHING ELSE and she'll probably be happier and more productive.
strange, my ppc mac mini runs flawlessly, haven't rebooted in months except for OS software updates. things that do crash: Photoshop CS2 MS Entourage MS Word MS Excel MSN Messenger Acrobat VLC....stranger, I don't remember ever using or even launching any of the made by apple software that comes with OSX...I think i opened itunes once...to stream some winamp radio...maybe...

WOW! I completely forgot about Generations Arena. I thought it died or something! (...I think I now regret spending all that money on a 4870 last week)
Q3:TA had 2 of the best CTF maps ever! And kamikaze!!!!!!

I'm constantly trying to explain that same vibe to a few of my friends. They just don't get it. :(
I reinstalled it last night. It doesn't look that great. But still lots of fun.
