Apples FairPlay and the M$ equivalents only work as the companies in charge are the only ones who know the algorithms. Surely if it is open source then anyone with the source code can see how it operates cutting out the need to reverse engineer anything.
This is one situation where open source would be a bad idea.
"We hope the space station crew will write a message of peace on the plane before they launch it," says Suzuki. As it enter the atmosphere above the United States and promptly got "neutralised" by some missiles.
But M$ don't use it or ship it as part of Windows? I was talking about M$ point of view. Apache is just anothe piece of software that runs on windows. Doesn't matter if it is open source or not.
What is the point of a DVD recorder where you can only get a couple of hours of TV on a disc and then you still have the hassle of swapping discs when one gets full? In the UK Free view HD recorders are becoming popular. Think TIVO withuit the subscription and some of the decent channels. 80+ hours of recordings is enough for most people.
Excuse me, but why would M$ even think about open sourcing one of the fundamental pieces of their archietecture? How could they use its functionality if that was left up to some group outside the company?
I think you will find that most cinemas are going digital these days. Not only do you get scratch free prints and crystal clear audio but they could open the same film in every cinema now if they wanted to. All without having to duplicate a single print. Even my local art house has got a digital projector so it can show live satellite broadcasts and stuff like that.
Now if it had an LED that i could read from a diatance in a lit room i would think about it. News, weater, e-mail ticker. LCDs are ok but you can't really read them unless you are stood right next to em or they are about 2 inches tall.
Yeah, but is it any good? Browse music and sort by #seeds (only guarantee of being able to download something) and what do you get?

I would have to call that a fairly random selection of commercial rubbish. for more alternative music it's still easier to get it from a shop or on-line. And yes, I did once leave my PC on for a wek trying to download one album.
Thing is, if you start em on Assembly or C then they are going to have a tougher time getting to grips with OO languages like Java, C++ or C#. I know a few old school programmers from an Assembly or Electronics background and they just didn't get it. Classes were just things they grouped their functons in.
HD-DVD is also region-free. There is no option whatsoever for region coding. If you really wanted to, you could release a multi-region, encrypted HD-DVD which adapted based on the default language of the player, or even a GeoIP lookup if they have it plugged in to the Internet. While it's good for the consumer, perhaps that is why the studios don't like it.
I am afraid to say i get my (uk) news from "Have I Got News From You" and "The Now Show". I gave up watching mainstream news years ago and frankly feel happier for it. The problem with BBC news is they try and cover everything on the TV and radio. Newspapers and t'net let you read the bits you are interested in while TV makes you sit through everything. In the end it's just not worth it.
While you are at it you could redirect them to a Linux site and tell them to reformat their machine and install Ubuntu on it as well. That was sarcasm if you hadn't guessed.

What is this "porn" of which you speak?
FWIW I am taking the M$ side of the argument. I am the wrong side of 30 and just too darn lazy to type "Microsoft" every time.

Jazz is the sound of a blues quartet being pushed down the stairs.
Turns over and goes back to sleep.

I vote that if it does all goes pear shaped, then we base our future civilizations on the Mad Max films. All leather and custom dune buggys.
to the Swedish anyway.

Nope, I hear it's going to be dungarees with an eagle on the escape hatch.

You tell Google that.
