Check out the all-in-ones made by Brother. Even the Cheapest MFC440CN will scan in many formats, via ADF or manually, to a flash card you insert in it. It then has an ethernet jack and you simply FTP to it to retrieve your files in TIFF or in PDF format.
I love that they'd put an FTP server in, instead of a proprietary driver-only interface. And it is fairly cheap too...

It is hard to imagine not using IM in any capacity... It is now the preferred method of communication in many large tech companies, it isn't just a "chat with friends" medium any more.

I switched TO Gaim from Trillian at 2.0 Beta6 ... and I actually like it a lot better. When it comes to file transfers however, I feel its best to use the service which works. For example I have a set of friends on gtalk (jabber) and on MSN... but when we transfer files, we all have AIM accounts because file transfer works best there for all of us. Since all the services go through Ga--err pidgin, then it is really no trouble to do that.

Actually there's no need for a camera's "panoramic" mode any more. Check out Autostitch , a free for personal use program created by researchers at UBC. Essentially you take as many pictures as you want with varying amount of overlap. Each picture can be rotated differently and even vary somewhat in exposure, and this program automatically figures out which ones go where, even throwing out ones that are not part of the scene. It takes a ton of ram and some CPU speed but the result is better than any other method I've seen. Some examples here at the bottom of this page: AZ Snow Pictures.

Who said 3Mbps was even enough for DVD quality? DVD's are 5-11Mbps MPEG2 and they aren't all that great. Even accounting for a better high quality compression scheme such as MPEG4, 3Mbps will barely cut it, and only then if your connection is rock solid and saturated the entire time.
And DVD quality in my opinion isn't that great any more, with netflix sending out HDDVD and BluRay versions of their movies for the same price, it has just raised the requirements on residential internet connections before it can be a real business.
Don't get me wrong - I think it's a great idea as a suppliment to real DVD's when you're in a hotel or travelling.. but not as a replacement for optical discs.

I assumed that the whole record industry would shift to that overnight, but of course we all know how that went.. Even 4-5 years after Mp3 was generally available we had Napster come out and make MP3's accessible to all. The industry killed that and it took nearly ANOTHER 5 years for digital music distribution to gain traction.. Overnight? no way.. This prediction is totally wrong about on demand movies, precisely because the industry WON'T change overnight.

Second, by the method described above, you now know user "xyz" on your site is matched with a UID in the AOL search records. From that you can go back and dump all their searches over the last 3 months.

Also, I'm sure you are kidding about the lack of a privacy problem.. Just grep for the SSN regexp and you'll see, some people searched for their SSN, address, drivers license number, full name, and DOB all on one line. Sure its not smart of them to do, but it would be nice if the company they use as their ISP didn't release that to the world without warning.

It was a Sunday (for the first bigger eruption in 1980). We were supposedly in the 'safe zone', but we all know how that went. We had just gotten up out of the tents when the ground shook continuously for minutes like an earthquake.. Then we could see a grey cloud rising up near the horizon.

Very quickly, the cloud appeared to go so high that it was over us. There was lightning at the edge of the cloud. Rain began to fall immediately, I remember it was warm and black.. Looking closely at a drop you could see the individual ash particles.

By that time, we had pulled up the tent with everything in side it and threw it in the back of the truck in a single motion.

The ride back to Yakima, WA was slow, and the visibility was just about zero. It was hard to breath and the roads were jammed with panic'd people.. We later found out that the campground we were at was covered in a large amount of burning hot mud.

When we got home there was ash everywhere, and it stayed dark for what seemed like days. I remember wearing a mask for weeks afterwards to go outside.
