    From the article:

Google has said it is open to data requests from foreign governments as long as they comply with U.S. laws and are issued within the country in which the information is stored.

Federal Judge Jose Marcos Lunardelli rejected that reasoning on Aug. 22, saying "all the photographs and messages being investigated were published by Brazilians, through Internet connection in national territory."

    • Racism and child pornography are crimes in Brazil.
    • The subjects who the Brazilian goverment are after are in Brazilian territory.
    • Denying this information so the Brazilian police can prosecute these criminals is obstruction of justice, which is a crime.

So no, they are not preserving user rights, they are preventing the investigation to go forward.

Making your customers go through crap that people who don't pay don't have to go through.

I have 4 mod points, but unfortunately the parent is already +5 insightful. This is the main reason why DRM and other BS encourage piracy. Piracy is cheaper, has better customer service (you can replace anything you bought wihtout hearing a peep), and to borrow a motto from a known company, it just works :P. The Record and Movie companies must realize that if you want to beat piracy, you have to start providing a better service than your competitor and don't treat your customers as criminals.

  14. Piracy on Microsoft Sues and Gets Sued · · Score: 3, Interesting

I am completely in favor of MS chasing all pirate versions and distributors. One of the reasons Windows is so popular here in Brazil is that anyone can have a copy of any version of windows for R$10 (US$3!). If people only had the option to buy the orignial version which begins at R$700 (US$304), people would realize how overpriced Windows really is, and maybe start looking for existing alternatives.

Castlevania Possibility of Suck: Very High (...)I think it'll fail in this director's hands. He's used to showing games that are all about mindlessly beating the crap out of each other or trying to eradicate your enemies with guns or an assortment of other weapons.
I think he never played Castlevania. It's a great game, but it's basically DOOM with a whip.

Not really, most of the poker players bet, bluff and gamble within logic, so it's possible to deduce what a person has or what they are trying to do. IMHO, the most difficutl problem with an AI playing poker is that it would have to analyze the other players facial expressions and body language, which is a good part of the game.

  24. The wonders of lock-in development on First Blu-ray Drives Won't play Blu-ray Movies · · Score: 1
    This is really fantastic:
commercial content is encrypted with High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), which can only be decrypted using a HDCP-compliant graphics card that offers DVI or HDMI connections.
Today, the only HDCP-supporting BD playback application is the OEM version of Intervideo WinDVD BD that's bundled with Sony's VAIO VGN-AR18GP notebook
So if I bought a blu-ray film tomorrow, the only way to watch a movie I legally bought is either buy a new TV that supports HDCP, which obviously won't be cheap, or I will have to buy a new computer that actually can play the damned thing. And they still can't fathom why there are so much piracy. Why on earth would I buy something that I can only play in one specific device? Will I have to "activate" my movie if I buy a new player? This is the only reason to support DRM: to lock the customer in a specific hardware.

Hey, tell me how can I support more of Joss' work and I will do it. I imported the box with Firefly season, paying as much for the box as for mail order. I didn't bought the movie because I already had gotten it as a birthday present. I told every single person I met about serenity and firefly and how it's great and all that. Same thing for B5. I try to support and spread the shows and films I like the best I can.

About the series being cancelled, I really doesn't have an answer for that. God only knows why it didnt' succeeded. But just because a series is cancelled, it doesn't always mean that it was horrbile. Good examples of this are Arrested Development, that was fantastic, and Veronica Mars, that almost got cancelled. I know, I know, they are not sci-fi series, but I couldn't think of any thing else.
