  1. I think the problem is... on Prof Denied Funds Over Evolution Evidence · · Score: 1

No matter how many facts you have to support yourself, there will always be people who don't believe in evolution. Why? Because, if you think about it, it's a bit more far-fetched than an almighty creator. Think about it. Even the simplest bacteria have DNA and RNA, which has to be perfectly aligned and with no errors for the cell to survive. An error in the DNA means a protein folding error, and even the smallest changed amino acid can change the entire shape of a protein. Then, think about all the information needed to have a cell with the ability to reproduce. The cell needs to know how to copy its DNA, pull the chromosomes to each side of the cell, and then perform cytokinesis. If the cell that's 'accidently' (I mean, how else will life happen? The only theory I've heard of, and it's *quite* possible I'm ignorant about this, is that the chemicals were in the right place at the right time...) produced doesn't know how to reproduce, then it will just die and be a microscopic piece of dust in a giant, lifeless earth.

It's possible that evolution is true, but don't hate on people who don't believe it, because, let's face it, it *is* *kind* of out there.
(Readies flame shield against hundreds of replies giving facts and evidence supporting evolution up the wazoo :P )

Childhood memories... I'm glad that someone has pointed out New York's liberal nature, though. Big cities in the United States always seem to have stupid liberals that think that France is a perfect example of successful socialism running the government. Examples: Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you're ever visiting there, find someone who ISN'T working class (IE: Benefits from quasi-socialism), such as a business owner, or someone high up in a big company, who thinks the government in Minneapolis is cool. If you think Bush is stupid, you should see some of the things these people do...

    Oh puh-leeze. National healthcare? Seriously.

For one thing, the government of the US was based off of the idea that you can make your own way. I don't think it's fair for someone who works hard to get the same benefits as someone who is flipping burgers. Education? Private schools are available. Can't pay for them? Get a decent job, work your ass off.

Children to war? They had to sign up for the job... it's not like there is a draft or anything. (Now, whether or not there could be in the future is an entirely different thing. But we aren't talking about that.) The "ones that survive"? This is hardly vietnam we're talking about. My pastor came back from the war, slightly shellshocked, but he'd been there for a year and a half.. no injuries... and he didn't even have a WEAPON with him. (Non-combatants can't carry weapons. Now THAT is a stupid rule. So he had to get a really, really big bible) Mind you, he was on a camp routinely bombed. He could see places he'd just walked past earlier that day completely destroyed... And it is unfortunate that some people get hurt, but once again, this isn't exactly vietnam.

I'd think pedofiles would hurt children more than the government not controlling their parents and handing out free services at the expense of people who've worked for their money. The reality is NOT tax-cuts for the rich. The rich pay for most social services. Why do you think everyone has their own charity organization? Tax-deductibility is really important when millions of dollars are going to the government. Apparently you don't understand how taxes work: They're PERCENTAGES. Giving healthcare to everyone is unfair for the people who do have a lot of money, regardless of how you think it's wrong that they have it.

  7. Okay, Firewire thing. on MacBook Internal Photos · · Score: 1

Cue tons of people saying "OMG! No firewire means firewire is DEAD!" Alright, well, for one thing, USB takes less PCB space then firewire. Firewire will NOT die, as it is THE way to transfer digital video, and it is incredible for harddrives. For another, since most people don't need firewire, (it's a niche now, and apple is aiming more and more mainstream), apple doesn't include it. It's extra cost. Now, people who DO use firewire, IE, not you if you even question firewire's lifetime, can get adaptors for it. Everyone is happy. Basically, the lesson learned is: If you think firewire is dead, you're not part of the secret clan of berret-wearing video-editting super mac latte-drinkers. Therefore, don't say something you don't know about.

But to clarify, I really need to stress that in Japan, parents will literally disown kids for doing badly, and some families reward high grades with sexual favors. Well, as a few others have pointed out, in Japanese culture, suicide doesn't have a negetive stigma. I'll let you read them to explain that...
The reason the suicide rate is so high in Japan among teenagers though (In addition to the "suicide is kind of okay" culture), is cram schools. Japanese students are obsessed about grades, because to be successful in life, they have to be perfect students, and get great grades, and do very well on exams. I'd imagine that if we put American kids into that kind of situation, the rates would be even *worse*. If anything, considering all the pressure they have on them, it's commendable to be able to survive it.
