    That is exactly why I charge $100 to anyone wanting me to fix their computer. I clean it the first time for free. Hide some icons, toss firefox on their ,tell them to use it, etc. Show them what they need to do. Most of the time that fixes the problem. The others that come back because "firefox was too hard" or whatever bullshit excuse they had, they have to pay $100, i spend 2 hours on it max, if it is fixed, fine if not it isnt my problem.

    My time is valuable,. i dont mind helping out, but I dont go an ask for time consuming legal advice from my friends that are lawyers. If I have a question, they direct me to what I need to find, if its a big question, I expect to have to pay for that.

    They downloaded a screensave that had claria in it. They did not choose claria.
    There is a fundamental difference between being sought out and piggy backing upon other "useful" software (someone wanted that screensaver etc)

    interesting concept...

    Google is in a dominent position they could force compliance with standards . People are chasing google. If they started ranking lower based on standards incompliance, people would quickly make their sites work right.

    Google Desktop is a product in and of itself. No one WANTS claria. No one seeks out claria to install. People actively go get Google Desktop because they want Google Desktop for the features it provides. Find me one person that said "damn computer, I need that claria product to make it useful"

    It piggy backs on other thigs that are useful..that is a significant difference

    Most businesses simply arent in a desperate need for every single client they can get. Most business like the clients can easily choose who they do business with.

    That works soooo well when they use recorded messages to call you with. That is illegal for everyone else to do, but politicians are allowed to. OH and they spoof the caller id. Good luck with your little idea of "take me off your list"

    I think if someone else did that, it would probably be a felony, Run for office and you get to break as many laws as you want.

    Well CD-rs and DVD-r have upwards of 4-8 years and counting for life. Those people that claim 1-2 years, they are full of shit.

    Sure if you leave it directly in the sun im sure it will degrade. If you put it in a case in a drawer, it will work just fine for atleast 5 years

    It doesnt require an ask slashdot to have balls to solve the problem on your own...or get the authorities involved. Get a young cop over there and they will hear it.

    The one thing about the US, it is hard to bribe someone and be successful. Granted many govt jobs may be lowpaying, but for some reason bribes just dont go down very well. Cops will take bribes, but when you get into the more beauracratic departments, good luck. They are either to honest, to lazy, to stupid or whatever to do it.

    They may be low paid, but for some reason they are lazingly honest (or get caught rather quickly, because they were lazy in taking the bribe.

    How about a pickpocket at the airport, they can even turn it in to the lost and found afterwards. Suddenly being John smith isnt that bad now...

    and secondly, gee I really wonder if the people at the border are gonna be lazy and not bother to check but simply swipe it.... oh wait they are lazy and will do exactly that!

    As for the need to steal a passport right now to do this...wait a week, im sure someone will figure out how to take this one step further.

    Spam is easy to take care of, well 99% of it. the rest isnt a big deal so who cares.

    My office went from 2000 spam mails a day to about 10. across 15 employees. Who gives a crap about the 10 emails remaining...

    I only wish it could be taken care of upstream further to shut those pricks down. but for the end user in an admins perspective, most systems are pretty easy to deal with (particularly small offices)

    In some standoff in the middle of nowhere the ATF used one of these. The vehicle had fiber optics on pointed on each side. It made the vehicle invisible (the movement basically looked like heat waves on the horizon). They drove an armored personnel carrier within 20ft of the front door. lets just say it suprised the hell out of the gunman standing by the front door.
