Actually, the article describes why programers suck at math.
Instead of using seconds as a time unite and introducing what amounts to rounding errors, systems like these should run straight off the clock ticks. There's no reason for a computer to be using seconds internally in the first place - just convert to them when human-readable output is required.
Most movie renters aren't likely interested in BUYING the movie at 10x the cost. Might make a bunch of people who would otherwise rent the movie go download it though.
Apparently FPS games are the only real computer games. Because there's no way anyone grew up on RPGs, strategy games, adventure games, sports games, driving games or what have you. Nope. Doom is the mother of all games, and it's derrivatives are representative of the entire gaming industry.
There IS a certain similarity to "bait and switch", which is illegal... but likely not quite close enough to nail them on it.
And they've probably got their butts covered 99 ways from sunday in the small print of their EULAs, TOSs, etc. Admitadly, nobody really knows how legal the courts will consider those to be if they come directly under challenge, but who has the money to enter into a lawsuit with one of the world's richest megacorps just to find out?
4: Making the character up to be a hot guy/girl of "your type", so that you can stare at eye candy that actually suits your own tastes. ("If I'm going to be staring at this character for the next 50+ hours, it might as well look good") 5: Making the character up to be a fashion doll. ("screw the stats, I want the awesome looking armor") 6: Making the character up to look like anything other than a standard video-game hero(ine), who tend to be carbon copies of each other.
All that data was apparently in one data center... Not nearly diffuse enough to be called "cloud computing". Google's hundreds of distrubuted, redunant data centers... that's a cloud.
I refuse to even drive accross the border from Canada, and that crossing is relatively nightmare free. But going through their airport (in)security? Not a freaking chance. Those people have no conception of risk assessment, are totally isane and don't even know their own damned laws and policies. Not to mention the last thing I want is some high school dropout who can barely use their cellphone poking around in my laptop and accidentally deleting stuff in a vain search for files conveniently labeled "child porn.mpg" or "terrorist plot plans.doc".
Seriously folks - why the hell do you put up with this shit?
DNA doesn't work that way. You can't use DNA to determine the nationality. Of anyone. Ever. If you're really lucky you might be able to determine the aproximate part of the planet somebody's ancestors came from, but even at that it would be incredibly unreliable, what with all the intermarriage and stuff.
It's like they just threw out most of the last 50 years of biology and decided to go with some crazy 1940's eugenics-esque pseudo-science.
The only viable use for DNA like this is as a sort of super-fingerprint. And fingerprinting people at the border is already controversial, never mind absconding with parts of their bodies.
Ever notice how pissed off the police get every time we expect them to get a warrent? It's not like you need to sacrifice a virgin to get one. You just need to convince a judge that you've got a good reason to do whatever it is that the warrent calls for.
It's enough to make you think they're just out there looking for new and interesting ways to abuse their authority.
Most of the buyers for under $10 cellphone games are not the same people who buy $60 PS3 games. They also get more coverage because there's just more games coming out, as development is quicker and easier.
A person with a proven biological predisposition to murderous violence needs to be locked up for more time, not less.
Of course, the science probably doesn't actually support either response.
Mrs Frisby gives her whole-hearted aproval to this endeavor.
Water is still wet.

"the last unrestricted fire hazard' people can bring on airplanes."
Actually, that would be the passengers themselves. You actually can kill somebody with your bare hands, or even your teeth, if so inclined.

From what I see, it's "handheld devices" that are banned. The car radio/gps/etc. are not handheld, and coffee isn't a device.
Does this mean that Abiword may finally fix the bugs that make it a bloody pain to use? I swear, every time I've tried it, it was like pulling teeth.
Now, if only we could ensure that ALL military hardware had kill switches, and that everybody on the planet knew how to use them.
I think we'd just kill "them", and replace them with folks who'd turn it back on.

We're still evil!

*I* have enough information to make a basic fission bomb. I'm not even a physics or engineering student.

last i checked, the definition of clinical death is that your heart has stopped beating.
so, what we have here is a cybernetic zombie.
When the hell has there ever been glory in IT?
Seriously, go look the word up in a dictionary.
A dead man's switch. If it's good enough for the soviet nuclear arsenal, it's good enough for a PC.
