A person with a proven biological predisposition to murderous violence needs to be locked up for more time, not less.

Of course, the science probably doesn't actually support either response.

Actually, the article describes why programers suck at math.

Instead of using seconds as a time unite and introducing what amounts to rounding errors, systems like these should run straight off the clock ticks. There's no reason for a computer to be using seconds internally in the first place - just convert to them when human-readable output is required.

And they've probably got their butts covered 99 ways from sunday in the small print of their EULAs, TOSs, etc. Admitadly, nobody really knows how legal the courts will consider those to be if they come directly under challenge, but who has the money to enter into a lawsuit with one of the world's richest megacorps just to find out?

I refuse to even drive accross the border from Canada, and that crossing is relatively nightmare free. But going through their airport (in)security? Not a freaking chance. Those people have no conception of risk assessment, are totally isane and don't even know their own damned laws and policies. Not to mention the last thing I want is some high school dropout who can barely use their cellphone poking around in my laptop and accidentally deleting stuff in a vain search for files conveniently labeled "child porn.mpg" or "terrorist plot plans.doc".

Seriously folks - why the hell do you put up with this shit?

  19. ... the hell? on Scientists Decry "Horrifying" UK Border Test Plan · · Score: 1

DNA doesn't work that way. You can't use DNA to determine the nationality. Of anyone. Ever. If you're really lucky you might be able to determine the aproximate part of the planet somebody's ancestors came from, but even at that it would be incredibly unreliable, what with all the intermarriage and stuff.

It's like they just threw out most of the last 50 years of biology and decided to go with some crazy 1940's eugenics-esque pseudo-science.

The only viable use for DNA like this is as a sort of super-fingerprint. And fingerprinting people at the border is already controversial, never mind absconding with parts of their bodies.
