  1. News Flash on Vista and the Music Industry · · Score: 4, Informative

Media DRM on Vista is optional. If you don't like it, don't use it. No, your mp3s won't degrade. And you can copy them as often as you wish.

If you want to spread FUD, at least don't make up EVERYTHING.

  2. Re:Patents are Never Defensive on Microsoft Applies to Patent RSS in Vista · · Score: 2, Interesting

This provides only single defense, as opposed to a MAD system.

    Tech A by company A
    Tech B by company B

Now, suppose both companies use both technologies.

Case 1: A has patented, B has released in the wild. A sues B for tech A. B can't do anything.
Case 2: A has patented, B has patented too. A sues B for tech A. B asks them to drop the lawsuit or they'll sue for use of B.

Quite frankly, I've never seen MS abuse any of their patents.

  8. Re:Boycott on Neverwinter Nights 2 Review · · Score: 4, Informative

There is also a boycott going on since they have effectively eliminated Linux and Mac support for the game and have publicly stated that there will be no version for these platforms. This comes AFTER Linux and Mac gamers kept this game alive and on the shelves LONG after most games have gone the way of the dinosaur.

Eliminated ? The engine was rewritten from scratch, with some game logic kept from the original. They didn't eliminate the support because it wasn't there in the first place. As for the fact that Mac+Linux gamer kept it alive, any sources ? I'd argue that there was still more people playing it on Windows near the end of the lifecycle than there was on OSX/Linux.

The company that manufactured NWN2 CAN support these platforms with MONO + TAO but refuses to (or doesn't realize it can).

Where does Mono come in ? People are confused by the fact that the installer bundles .NET 2.0, but this is strictly for the toolset. The game is written in vanilla C++ with DirectX. While OpenGL support would have been an option when they started development, porting now is not viable from a monetary standpoint. Maybe it is from a 'good will' standpoint, but that's another discussion.

Yeah, the internet is cool. Yadda Yadda. Standalone computers/OSes are a thing of the past and dumb-terminals/browsers/web services are going to kill them. I've heard that back in '95. At the end of the day I still prefer desktop apps for anything I do even remotely often. Graphics intensive games will always run on the desktop. If PC games get killed in favour of game consoles, then we've just switched to a different kind of desktop. Wake me up when it happens; I suspect I'll be long dead.

I'm not usually a Sony doomsday prophet, but if something can kill the PS3, it's this. They need their RPGs. They need Koei and Squeenix. If those juggernauts start to slip away, then Sony is in big, big trouble. Most switches will lean in the 360 direction because of comparable specs and input mechanisms. If the exodus reaches some sort of critical mass, where companies don't believe that the PS3 will sell anymore, that whole situation might end very badly for Sony, and very well for MS and, to a lesser extent, Nintendo.
