From there, you can go to the old (3rd edition) Mage: The Ascension which had the most dynamic spell system that I've ever seen. Sadly, the new Mage: The Awakening is only a pale shadow of the old system, and is much more static like D&D.
Ouch! That's sad to hear. I used to think Mage: the Ascension had the best spellcasing concept ever, it's a pity if they dumbed it down :(

Don't give fans a sub-par Guilty Gear and a Dead or Alive and leave it at that. Give folks a *solid* 2D fighter. Once again, a japanese company, Capcom, may grant your wish. Technically speaking, the street fighter series is owned by CAPCOM USA ;)

That's why everybody either plays on the analog stick (like i do, i don't know about other fighting games but at least Virtua Fighter 5 supports that) or does a simple d-pad "mod" a.k.a. sanding the plastic ring that surrounds the d-pad, as seen for example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXG2aDn6ZYg ;)

I second this - i was able to play Virtua Fighter 5 online throughout the holiday season. It *was* a bit flaky sometimes, had a couple of disconnects but nothing close to downtime.

...of course i'm aware that a) it's a one-on-one game, and also that b) this is slashdot, where nobody cares about Beat Em Ups.

I stopped reading as soon as your silly bias against the Wii reared its head. I probably don't even really disagree with your list, but it's hard to take you seriously when the fanboyism is so blatantly obvious.

OK, this might be totally un-slashdotish but *my* best game of the year was Virtua Fighter 5 for the xbox. For the live support. I mean, seriously, being able to play a fightng game online, with little to no lag, that's a technical achievement. We're talking about inputs that take less than one frame here.

To redeem myself for mentioning Beat 'Em Ups in slashdot, i'd have to say my Runner Up is Vulture's Eye, the fork of Falcon's Eye isometric frontend to NetHack.
