  2. ubuntustudio on Ubuntu 6.10 is Out · · Score: 1
They have a project, I think they were considering 'mubuntu' at some point or it was a popular recommendation on the forums (I forget(maybe it was remarkable because it wasn't popular)). Now they have a front page with the graphics, video, ... they must be sticking with the more generic studio extended-moniker to cater to a wider audience. Possibly the 'mu' & emphasis on preemption was attracting too many of the lynx fanatics. :p

For the basic recording that I like to do, all that extra preemption seems like overkill. I happen to be running 2.6.18 on dapper with 'desktop' grade preemption and a sluggish 250Hz timer frequency and it records fine, I didn't really need the new kernel though - and those kernel options have existed for a while. If it helps for bigger recording projects then surely there could be DVB applications that benefit, and stuff like that. The more the merrier.

There should still be a place for the projects like agnula and planetccrma distros, dedicated machines aren't going to need any cinelerra or mythtv, etc. Specialisation is sort of the point of preempting your kernel to death.

I was watching this ETV thing about the Badlands that was saying that they were formed by a torrental flow that happened over a (relatively)short period of time. Their guess was that an ice dam melted and allowed a pent up ocean of water to suddenly equalise back all over the rest of the ocean. So what are the chances of a glacier melting and a couple of feet of sea from the top of the globe flushing Canada again? They seemed awfully convinced about the possibility, but I guess maybe sea level is sea level everywhere? I'd look it up, but I don't live anywhere near the beach or canada. Isn't there some kind of bulge at the equator form all the spinning, is that still there? I'm just not convinced that a flat pan of water and a few ice cubes & density measurements necessarily represents all of the variables of a big gravity making ball of spinning earth...

  9. not yet maybe, maybe never on Zune's Viral DRM Will Violate Creative Commons · · Score: 1

With the big record label's monopoly on exposure the only way an artist can ever gain the kind of momentum needed for mainstream success is to sign one-sided contracts with them. This Zune policy sounds like an extension of their current philosophy. It's no big secret that you don't even need any talent to become a household name in the music biz, all you need is a desire to be idolised that outweighs your artistic integrity and there is no shortage of hacks willing to fill those shoes. Take a pretty face and get on your phone to a handful of professional studio musicians and anyone can be a star. When a million ppl 'steal' your work, regardless of howevermany nickels*10e6 you are deprived of if a million ppl steal from you that lost revenue pales in comparison to the fact that you now are a brand, just like Coca-Cola and now you can even sell t-shirts or demand a lot more than a few hundred bucks a gig for performances/remixes/collaborations, etc and what happens is you get it with no strings attached. This Zune DRM favor is going to limit the effectiveness of guerilla marketing for those who choose to liscense CC and attempt to compete based on their actual merit or talent. It won't be long before MS buys Sony/BMG or vise versa, looks like.

Not too long ago the local news got their hands on a videotape made at an arrest scene. This guy comes back from Iraq and he's tooling around with his friend in this Corvette, apparantly they were speeding or something and the driver thought he could outrun the cops.... short chase that ends with the Corvette hitting a telephone pole near the residence of this guy with a camcorder. When the cop tells the guy, the passenger, to get out of the car he gets out with his hands visible and says clearly, "We're on your side. We mean you no harm." - a phrase he picked up doing MP work in the middle east. The cop responds by shooting him three times. It was like the 3rd time in as many months I had heard reports of police shooting ppl, one of the times, they shot an off-duty cop that was a little drunk - so it's not like their actions don't affect them too.
