In a field that is essentially less than 75 years old it seems specious to call a language that has been around and in heavy use for nearly 20 years a fad.
moreover, as part of web 2.0 is seems to have kicked Silverlight and Flash's collective asses
and it's extensions into JSON seem to ensure that it will be around for another 20 years
Maybe javascript != computer science, but it is certainly a programming language that is widely used and probably an easier introduction thatn perl/php/c/java
getting a computer to do anything at all is major step for a beginner -why do you think logo with its drawing is such an attractive tool to teach kids?
I live in the SF Bay Area, so I am used to a pretty high level of culture, etc
But I spent 6 months contracting for Alberta's power utility Epcor about 10 years ago and really liked Edmonton -it is very multicultural, there is a big college -a lot of downtown is interconnected so you don't have to go outside when it is cold/wet and they have the Fringe Festival and a fair amount of live music and good restaurants.
There were enough french speakers and ethnic enclaves that it felt more European than Calgary or any American city I have been in although I realize that Quebec and probably Vancouver are more cosmopolitan.
If my gf could stand the cold I would definitely consider living there, but she can barely handle Bay Area winters....too bad, but it is below freezing for days at a time -in fact EPCOR was not allowed to completely shut off anyone's electricity -they had to give them enough so that they could run a heating coil so as not to freeze to death...
It was really cool taking BART to Edmonton for my commute I must say...2 weeks up there, one long weekend back home...
That's taking the short view -Christian Crusader's despicable treatment of Muslim's during the Crusades managed to single-handedly unify thousands of fragmented groups and tribes in their hatred of the Christian world -between that and The Great Game and supporting oligarchies such as Egypt, Saudi arabia, etc the western world has certainly done much to be deserving of the emnitiy of the Islamic world
going back to the 80s we had Digable Planets,The Fugees, A tribe called Quest and bay area greats Digital Underground (Tupac was once a member) and bassist Bill Laswell has done some work in that area -fast forward to awesome Hip Hop/Rock experiments like Damon Albarn/Danger Mouse Gorrilaz albums (especially the incomparable Demon Days) -in fact you could just buy almost anything that Danger Mouse or Damon Albarn has done and not go wrong.
Not to mention other crossovers like Beck, the Beasties, Japanese guitar/mix sensation Cornelius, will.i.am, N.E.R.D, Unkle and comedy hip-hoppers LMFAO
I come across interesting, non-mainstream rap/hip hop all the time on our 4 great college stations here in the bay area: KSJS, KSCU, KFJC and KZSU
nevertheless, apple and the big 4 publishers are under antitrust investigation in both the US and Europe over price fixing and collusion, which may or may not benefit the author, but certainly hurts the consumer
-we use apache/resin to serve our Java clients -Apache and resin do run on windows you know.
-however, our big workload on the backend is the realtime financial markets data that we have to turn around with minimal latency to the tune of up to 10 million messages/second, 22 billion messages per DAY. We are doing this on 8-core Win2003 boxes, but could probably last another year or 2 on the same hw by switching to Linux and have Linux pilots running on both medium iron (IBM Linux variant) and the midrange servers (OpenSUSE).
And the message volumes are going up ~20% per year....
lke svn, twiki, mysql, memcached, boost, postgreql, hudson -and we're mostly a windows shop -although we are trying to move some of our heavier workloads to Linux.
is the same douche who locked up the Creedence Clearwater name and songs to the point where John Fogerty got out of the music business until his contract with them expired.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Zaentz
Zaentz then sued Fogerty for infringing on his own song with 'The old man is down the Road' (and lost thank gawd)
FWIW I saw Fogerty at Outside Lands last summer and he still tears it up after all this time -plus, now he plays the Creedence songs again now that the rights have reverted.
As usual the US (and probably most other countries) believe in the power and relevance of these bodies only when THEY are the ones seeking redress for some wrong.
For a good look at this compare to the US ignoring NAFTA (even though they were its champions) when US sought tariffs against Canadian companies that they alleged were 'dumping' softwoods even though the terms of NAFTA supported the Canadians. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_softwood_lumber_dispute
Or how Bush, Cheney and Rumsfield will never face international war tribunals for authorizing the same tortures that we executed Japanese commanders for proscribing: http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-250_162-3554687.html
and it probably still wouldn't drive any measurable change...but one can always hope
because the powers that be combine appeal of lasissez-faire capitalism with the fear of losing what little status quo remains to pit us all against each other through the tactics of divide and conquer
as elrous0 says above -there will have to be some painful changes and some ugly battles before things will improve for most people on earth an most of us are not yet willing to make them -and I'm afraid I am probably among them. Maybe your children will see enough of what has been lost and can rise up before it is too late...

there are actually several Charismatic Christian groups who are specifically wealth oriented
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_theology
the 'gospel of wealth' is a misnomer as it actually refers to a Carnegie tract about the duties of the rich -Noblesse Oblige and all that...
