IST? Are you sure you don't mean ITS?

As far as DHCP needing registered MACs, you're half right. If you need your computer to only use one IP address, then yes, you would need to "lock-in" a MAC address to that IP in the DHCP configuration. If you don't mind who gets what IP, you can just set up a pool of addresses and let DHCP assign leases to those addresses for a period of time -- not good for something such as a web server. The latter is what most home routers do for wired connections.

Most importantly, does anyone care?... or would they rather just "live their lives" and not have to worry about what their government does?

I'm actually using Vista build 6000 on my laptop and I haven't had any problems booting up after both suspend or hibernation. In fact, it works much better than XP ever did. XP would often 'stall' for several minutes with a black screen after boot up from hibernation. I'm actually very impressed with how well Vista performs on my laptop. Even with only 512 MB of RAM, it's still about as fast as XP. I will say that it seems to use more battery life, especially with Aero.

I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but after an unsuccessful attempt at installing MythTV and configuring it with my tv tuner and video card, I tried installing my own custom version of XP that I stripped down. I then installed a free PVR program called GBPVR and it works nearly perfectly for me. The hardest part about configuring MythTV was driver issues. I spent over 8 hours working on configuring the TV Tuner drivers before I finally got it to work. When I couldn't get video out to work on my ati video card, I gave up and went in search of an easier way. My picture quality isn't great by any standard but you get what you pay for. In this case, I didn't pay much. $80 for the tuner and an old Duron 600Mhz with 256MB RAM.

  20. Bloatware? on Marketing Mozilla · · Score: 2, Insightful

Some of the suggestions that the author makes seem like a strategy to turn Firefox into bloated software. I think one of the reasons Firefox is so great is that it's download size is so small. If the memory footprint were a bit smaller it would be even better.

I think if Mozilla convinced more IT Managers that it is the browser that their users ought to be using, IT Departments everywhere begin to set Firefox as the default browser on all of their computers and more people start realizing the benefits of Firefox.

This is why Microsoft shouldn't be allowed to integrate IE into Windows. Companies know they can get away with supporting only Internet Explorer because every Windows computer has it. It's more cost efficient rather than actually bothering to support at least two or three different browsers that someone might have installed. If users had to download and install the browser a company supported, they would probably say 'fuggit' (especially 56k'ers)and go do business with a competitor.

No, I didn't misread it. It clearly says that when gamers whine that your ping is too LOW, you can turn it up (more lag), then turn it back down again. I'm just trying to say that multiplayer competition should be about skill and not hardware and if too low of a ping is deemed as unfair, then knowingly turning it up and then back down to fool players is ethically cheating.

  25. Re:Huh? on Network Card for Gamers - Uses Linux to Reduce Lag · · Score: 1
I'm pretty sure that the kind of people that would purchase this don't have many friends to play on their LAN with them.

    From the website:
PingThrottle- When other games complain that your ping is too low, adjust it a little higher until they stop whining. Then, dial it back down and go in for the kill!
So is this just an expensive tool to gain an unfair advantage (dare I say, "cheat")?

I'd really love to see this thing in action because if it does everything it claims it does, it would appear to break a lot of the laws of networking...like, you could only be as fast as your router and other connected networking devices can support?
