It's already proven that Microsoft's new kernel security is very flawed. So what's the problem for Symantec and McAfee to create proper installer that will skip those protections and install all drivers at kernel level? Viruses will do it anyway. They can also. As long as they prove that they didn't crack the kernel but used 'unreported function' of kernel's security. I know that Ms can disable this but it's only about clever installer that updates itself from internet. What do you think?
Maybe I'm not a SysAdmin but I'm creative. Time to create 100 mail accounts. Send 1 email for me and get the T-Shirt. Easy as taking lollipop from a kid!
Round One: RedHat introduces some great innovation, just to diffrentiate from Oracle and patents it. round Two: They say that Oracle Linux is no longer compatible with RedHat. Just for marketing purposes. And to convince management folks in big companies around the world that RedHat and Oracle ARE NOT THE SAME. Round Three: And what now? Sue the b*stards! Question is who is going to sue whom? If Oracle releases something based on patented idea - RedHat. Or Oracle will try to 'protect' OSS community from patents.
General lot of politics. What means for us fun to watch. Of course as long as you're not administering RedHat network. I feel your pain.
Microsoft will not produce SP3 because of very simple reason: they want Vista to replace XP. It's cash, a lot of it. Everybody knows that Win XP has more holes than swiss cheese. And it started to get Joe User. So they will upgrade just because of being scared of 'all those viruses, you know...'. So they'll be effectively forced to buy new system. And Miscosoft will be able to withdraw support for XP faster - which is good for them - they don't earn any cash from supporting it and it costs a lot. I think they'll not make the same mistake like with Win2000 that is still quite alive and kicking because of good compatibility with XP and SP3 they released for it. We can expect that Vista will quite fast become quite 'not exactly' compatible with XP. And without SP3 situation will get only worse. That's called strategy. On a big scale.
That thechnology will not anywhere close users unless is cheap enough. If it's expensive (I bet it is) users will be effectively prohibited from using it. If they don't want to use it - there'll be no software for it.
It's kind of the same like with VR glasses. They came few years ago with big hype of being the NEXT GREAT THING. Nothing like that happend. Why? Price. Prices even now are too high. A way too high. It's not that VR glasses are not useful and fun. Everybody who tried them know - they ARE. But who's going to pay $2000 or more for them?
Same as always - business goes first. Maybe except OSS.
That system can be quite useful for specific purposes. Especially in hospitals, factories and silmilar places where nice GUI is not so important as clear and informative one. By using certain colors and patterns for displaying data you can easily notify user about information and changes. That can be very useful. Think that you have 5 warnings and one 1 critical message. On PC that would take 6 message boxes popping on screen. In LCARS you can blink some some of the buttons for warnings and pop-up message with critical information. It looks more uniformed that icon in tray blinking. Or MS Clippy:)
Another good advantage is that system is designed to use touch screen. So nice big buttons and everything generally easy to read. Which is good in places you don't have space for fully blown PC + monitor + keyboard. Like in hospitals. It's much easier to clean and disinfect screen that keyboard. Not to mention that staff don't need to learn how to use computers, only some fancy GUI.
The only thing that project needs is proper standardization - if not all users will be totally lost. And every company will use it's own model.
As always somebody's trying to blame some organizations, not parents. They're easier to sue. But be honest, how can you check the age of kid? There's no way. Only way would be to use some kind of adult interaction. Let's say - if kid wants to register for this kind of page it needs to be done by adult. How? Simple. Bu using credit card. AFAIK it's quite popular with pr0n sites (no, I'm not registered with even one). This way companies can always put a blame on adults, effectively protecting themselves from being sued. Of course there's a problem - less kids registered - means less income. And kids prefer their parents NOT TO KNOW what is going on with them. It's always easier to blame somebody.
As always they want to remove everything instead of thinking first. What kind of quality does YouTube have? Sh*t, everybody knows. Those videos should be classified as promotional material. Instead removing them, they should lower the resolution (as if there's need for it already) and audio quality (look previous brackets) and add some intro like 'If you want to see it in proper way - Buy It!'. That would be much better than removing it.
Best part is that this process can be easily automated so videos marked as copyrighted by MPIA or similar can be automatically 'copyright marked'. That would create a lot of revenue for artists and a lot of fun for ordinary people.
Shame that they cannot think in this way. Create - not destroy!
...they will do it next few times. European Commision is already p*ssed with Microsoft and want to fine them once again for anti-trust practices. And, if you remember, Microsoft few weeks ago said that they want to postpone delivery of Vista to Europe. Because of this. Good point of that (except no Vista fo Europe) is that it will create market for Open Source Software. Especially that Europe already started their fight with proprietary (actually paid for) software.
Those experiments are not the first of the kind, and not the best explained for sure. In different ones link between obesity (it was percentage of fat not BMI) was also linked with IQ. Difference was that somebody who conducted experiments thought for a while over results (apparently that person wasn't fat - pun intetended). And result was:
Fat people need more oxygen that goes to fat tissues, so less goes to brain. Second: less blood with nutritions goes directly there.
They published also some proper tables with sugar and oxygen levels to prove their point. Other thing is total lack of excercise - that effectively slows down your heart, kidneys, liver, and so on. Not to mention that processing food in stomach requires a lot of energy. You know that feeling after eating a lot of food, especially fatty. That explains why best geeks are good at what they do plus they have a dozen of intresting hobbies and not so uncommonly train some martials arts or something similar.
Don't you think that creating this kind of page is a great help for IE? Of course they can read so they can as well use all ideas from it. If we want FireFox to win browser war we need to give it an edge. How else can we convince Joe User to switch? For them it's just a browser. They have no idea about security, CSS compliance and so. The only thing that works with them is features. Plain simple and useful. But if we post our thoughts on webpage IE will have them, Opera will have them, Safari will have them. Then how can we convince Joe User to install it? He doesn't need to install it, IE for him is THE SAME.
I think Mozilla should ditch this kind of webpage. It should be substituted with simple 'Post a feature webpage' plus some moderators to filter them out. What do you think?
Every time new console, computer (especially Mac) or some fabulous game comes we have the same thing.
It's not interesting anymore. It's the way companies make big hype about their product. If they really wanted to sell consoles to all customers that want them they would move release date few weeks or months. Then they would have time to manufacture all needed equipment. But the idea is different: they sell few consoles - that creates huge queues of mostly hardcore fans. If you make some interviews with them outcome is quite predictable. Shouts like "xxx is the best, and yyy sucks" are not uncommon. That's called MARKETING.
Guys, I think that release of new console can be covered on Slashdot, as it is something new, something that pushes boundaries of technology.
But publishing some news about taking pre-orders is pretty silly. It happens all the time, just the product is different.
Have you thought how good idea it is? They have cash (oil) but it's pointless to just give it to people. But if you give computers to kids in 10 years time you'll have a lot very skilled computer scientists. And for quite cheap wage. Think how many western companies will try to invest in country like that. And it's much closer that India. Question is: Are those kids going to learn something or just ignore those computers? Thing is that there're not many things to play with in Libya. Of course if you don't count sand. That creates very intresting experiment. You have a lot of kids who have nothing to do except playing with computers. Almost 24/7. And they have friends who do the same... What kind of outcome we can get?
I personally think that Qudaffi is not stupid. That's a great investment in future. And great chance - where else can you buy valuable education for $100? If I'm right, we will see many other contries to follow the suit.
Main idea IMHO is that in this way ICANN can say, nicely, NO to US court ruling. If they agreed they would actually gave up their independence and would become easy target for more attacks from US jurisdical system.
In this way they effectively explained themselves from executing court orders.
Good job for freedom of speech ICANN!

Think in this way: How many people visit YouTube every day? Millions. What happens it you put Google adverts there? Yes, you guessed. You will have damn a lot of clicks. Does it sound like a business model? Yep, I think so. Is it highly overpriced? Up to Google, they had cash - they need to invest it. It gave them about 80% of downloaded videos. Is it good? For them, for a while, for sure. What happens next is up to them, and RIAA, MPIA and so. If they can struck some kind of deal, who knows. With their cash, influences. That's exactly what Ballmer said. He 'wouldn't pay that much cash.' He MIGHT. Because it's very risky - but we all know that risky actions are most profitable. Time will show.
For me it sounds like new flavour of Rear Projection TV. Except that instead of LCD projector at back of case you have those great party lasers. Think about ripping screen out and using it for parties...
But seriously: lasers make quite a lot of heat. If you use them for a while you need to switch them off and let them cool down. Other thing is that you need to direct laser in proper place. You need to use some kind of motorised mirrors (for rear projection like tv) or damn lot of small lasers (for lcd like tv). If you want to use mirrors - they're very delicate stuff, and if you live close to busy road - you'll finish with very blurry image everytime big lorry passes. If you use lot of small lasers - besically you'll have new flavour of LCD TV. So nothing really new.
As I know some antivir software have feature called safe IM or so (for example Zone Alarm). Maybe that software filters links that it suspects to be unsafe? That would explain filtering of first sent link. Rest are considered safe because user is sending them once again so there needs to be a reason.
Exactly. They can just simply say: 'Oh, just because of sheer amount of videos we overlooked few. But we're trying.". So we can be sure that we will still be able to see everything - but just for few days. Which is really good for marketing - you need to visit their page very often, just not to miss some content.
Good idea, plus if you don't annoy RIAA and MPIA (and their BIG members) too much it should work.
...it's all about answers. Those guys answered them - and everybody knows how busy they are. I think it shows something about them - their character, the way they treat other people, how helpful they're trying to be.

If we want more good programmers, people with passion - we need to allow them to enter mainstream - by helping them, not rejecting. Everybody started some time ago, and all of us know how hard was to get over some, now basic, problems. If we show them positive way - they will learn it - and do the same to other.
