I don't think linus wants options like different graphical shells to disapper, but more for application developers to have an easy time aiming at a single target - make it easy to write something that can be installed anywhere without having to be concerned about what distro it will be running on, or consider various package managers, or take extra effort to work with things that have a slightly unusual setup.
Like in windows/osx - apps are expected to install the same way as other apps, and look "inline" with the rest of the system.
sure, they don't have to, we can write a custom installer and run a QT app on windows and pick a custom style if desired.
With "Linux" we don't have that, KDE, or Gnome have their own style, and often do a good job of theming QT/GTK apps to match the rest of the system, but not good enough, and neither is "standard"
Installing something can be as simple as copying to PATH, or use a deb, rpm, flatpack, snap... but it is hard to know which to target as standard.
I don't think we need a new standard - but some more official blessing of flatpack, and perhaps QT - giving people a standard to target would go a long way to encouraging more people to have their software run on linux - though I don't see this happening easily, as rpm/deb/snap and gtk/tk/whatever have various pros and cons, and are preferred by many people
Watched the video, he did switch headsets quite a few time per day, aimed to do it in
used video passthrough to do things like cooking and bathroom, a little like AR, but a rather low quality 2d video feed
A worse outcome is a low-tech hacker stealing my fingerprint, with a hatchet.
I hope these scanners check for a pulse or other signs of life.
I often like tech advances, but in this case, I'm fairly happy to just lean over the pin-pad so no-one else can see.
Also, for small purchases (£30) we can use contactless with no verification, if our card is stolen, the bank promises to refund misuse (perhaps requiring timley reporting of loss to them and police)
perhaps slightly large for a home network, but running QOS (the SQM package) seems to make a difference like night and day on my network.
Phones doing backups were the worst - but a couple of people streaming would also seriously clog up the network (hundreds of ms ping, perhaps even thousands).
Now it is often not noticable - though torrents with a high number of connections can still be problematic.
Also because Mozilla decided to add some lead-lined leaky kitchen sinks to Firefox.
On my non-gaming machine, it started launching like a Dodo, ran like a turtle and leaked like a raincloud.
I grumpily moved over to chrome, despite no TST, or DTA.
Very happy to be using Firefox again, I hope Mozilla can keep some focus on good engineering, and a slim extensible browser.
Hmm, I dual boot with windows - and this is the main issue I've had with systemd
pre-systemd, windows would sometimes leave its FS in an "unclean" state, and upstart(?) would happily boot providing a warning about failing to mount the FS.
post-systemd, In the same situation, I get dropped into a limited shell, with no reason given, and a note to look at the log.
It's not a big issue for me, fixable, I can just remove those items from fstab (Note - I did not add them, the *buntu installer did!) - but still, this kind of things are a bigger problem for new users, make linux look bad, and can be a much more serious problem in a server environment.
I'd accept it failing to boot if it could not mount a partition it _needed_ to boot... but the way it is setup right now just seems silly.
On top of that - a huge portion of animals are grain/corn and soy fed.
IIRC we grow more grain/corn and soy for non-human animals than we do for ourselves
so, eating less animals would give us more land to feed ourselfs, and perhaps grow a few more forests too.
Wish this was true.
Suspect enough people click on pre-video ads it (in the short term at least) seems worth it.
I imagine youtube would have stopped this annoying practice otherwise.
not only are you assuming there is loss, but ~$100m?
This is the kind of thing a smart company would pull of as a publicity stunt to triple their audience.
Perhaps ABC just lucked out, and was saved from this show being a flop.
really? you don't sound that representative of the "hacking/modding community"
Transparent back cover... that's nice. Not amazing, but will probably get them talked about a little more without so much forced PR.
They are *trying* to be ethical by investigating their supply line and not buying from suppliers who don't support slavery? Great! No hacker supports slavery!
It may not be totally focused on hackers/modders - which is fine. It's a modular phone that we should be able to replace/repair/home-make components for!
If hipster/vegans also like it make it more popular, meaning more spare parts at less cost... great.
A Touchscreen as a remote control for something else means you are not looking at it
This makes them fairly useless for most games
Someday, we'll have touchscreens that can alter their shape, and give good tactile feedback - respond more like a button, or at least sem-solid gel-filled bump
but now, even using a touch screen for simple NES games on a separate bigscreen is a pain
As evidence - I submitted the link to android market place, where I am selling the game - offered source code, source assets, etc. Several times, along with asking what would do for valid evidence.
150k views later, lots of evidence and questions from me... "monetization rejected" and still ignored.
Thats one of the slowly diminishing number of things about the UK that makes sense.
if as a pedestrian, you see a green light - cars are not directed to run you over.
If as a pedestrian, there is no light, or a red light - you can still cross! Just look first and don't run infront of a car.
The "appropriate spots" could be determined by the person ordering the package?
a few ideas:
-GPS on smartphone
-Mark position on map
-other methods combined with asking them to hold up smartphone, which flashes code to drone when it gets close
-manual survey beforehand (could be done on first delivery, after that drones can deliver)
I'm not saying its easy - just that I think we can do it;)

Though its reddit-like system is not quite finished yet, it is amazing what it can already do (and in other areas too!)
It also sounds like they contacted the police multiple times before managing to go ahead, the first bunch of attempts probably failed

Google takes 30% of all sales/transactions on the app store
Sure, that is not their only income - but it is a large enough part it should limit bad behaviour to a degree

Can they?
I now have VDSL (FTTC) - this is only ~200m less copper cable, there is still about 3000m of copper between me and the Cabinet.
Previously I was on speeds of about ~3mb(ADSL), now more like 13mb
I suspect the main change is the wider use of spectrum, but the shorter cable helps too.

We've had physical slide locks for... a very long time. (slide to unlock)
and candles that burn down, or water containers that fill up to measure progress (progress bars)
I don't think anything whose entire patent is "X that already exists, but on a computer" should be valid.
This reeks of American gvmnt helping out local companies - we hear similar stories about China now and again on slashdot. This is no better.
Seems this story is slowly getting more and more relevant :) http://marshallbrain.com/manna...
Just have a look at this: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/201...
I've just installed firefox again... and it no longer seems slow and bloated!

And that's with A video I made, of a Game I made!
Do we get an open radio? is that outside the scope of this project?
I'd really love to be able to call someone a mile away when we are both near each other but not a mast!

It looks similar to KDEs Dolphin - what's better about it?
Cython seems to connected these rather well.
