  1. Damn you Blizzard on Iraq Game Sparks Outrage, Soldiers Have Mixed Reactions · · Score: 1

They already created a game with all the heartbreak and sense of permanent loss of a hellish war - Diablo II hardcore mode.

  2. Well duh. on Auto Safety Tech May Encourage Dangerous Driving · · Score: 2, Funny

  3. Re:Congratulations on making a historic event happ on Barack Obama Wins US Presidency · · Score: 1

I was in the middle of killing M'uru when we heard the guild leader's wife over Vent tell him to stop playing that stupid game and come watch Obama's victory speech.

  4. Another point of interest on User Charged With Felony For Using Fake Name On MySpace · · Score: 1

Christ, I want to see what she SAID that could have possibly made her commit suicide.

  5. Please don't buy this on Researchers Create an Automatic Backup Band for Singers · · Score: 2

All I do, every day, is music. I am majoring in music and I don't have any GEs this quarter - I spend all my daytime surrounded by it. As such I LOVE helping non-majors with their music GE homework or talking to people about music (and not just "such and such music is good" but we discuss our OWN ideas on music that WE wrote). Now from that stand point this is absolutely awful. Why would they come and take a class for fun, learning, social interaction, and sell-fulfillment when they can belt into a computer mic like an over-sexed jackass? This is hardly "getting a taste of music creation" and it's just going to encourage people to continue to ignore music culture as a whole. Please don't spend money on this software so you can scream wildly and make a hardly listenable tune. Take that SAME money and free time and go buy a couple of lessons from a local guitarist/pianist/clarinetist/whateverist. The majority of us "classically trained musicians" aren't nearly as snooty and erudite as culture would have us look - we WANT to share this gift with you guys.

  6. Re:huh? on Serious Vulnerability In Firefox 2.0.0.12 · · Score: 1

Well it concerns ME greatly since that's where I hide all of my super free internet porn. Can you imagine the embarrassment if my mother actually used this exploit and found my copy of Asian Anal Sluts 7? Developers, fix this bug NOW!

  7. Million dollar pen? Use a pencil on Whose Laws Apply On the ISS? · · Score: 2, Funny

I foresee the international trial of the century wherein American astronauts are accused of stealing pencils from the Russians after their own space aged pens die.

  8. Me no RTFA on What Are The Best Free Games Online? · · Score: 2, Insightful

For the love of all that is unholy, don't RTFA. It's literally about 1.5 sentences per page along with the name of the game.

I've been playing Bejeweled for years. Not online mind you, but actually on my cell phone. It's an amazing five minute distraction during that short break in a two hour lecture.

I tried the demo of Peggle this week, and...well...while "entertaining" I doubt I would be willing to spend more than a few dollars on it. Now if it were ENTIRELY free, I could probably see myself playing it for a night while bored, otherwise I'll pass.

  9. Hard Drive Upgrade on The $500 Gaming PC Upgrade · · Score: 1

Well, my home built computer of three years still manages to play most things like a champ. I picked up all the parts for a bit over $1200 if I recall, and that included a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse. The one upgrade I did was from an ATI X800XL to a 7950GT.

Really, all you have to do is lop down a decent chunk of change when you feel comfortable with it, and then just do smallish to medium upgrades throughout the years. Hell, the upgrade I'm looking at the most right now is actually swapping out my hard drive for several SATA II in a RAID 0 (I don't REALLY need parity as I tend to keep all of my important documents backed up).

You don't NEED to spend a lot on upgrades, but you should probably be willing to spend a good amount on the initial build of a computer.

  10. Re:The Orchestra on Iwata Explains Mario Galaxy · · Score: 2, Insightful

Actually some of the most challenging stuff I have ever seen has been movie and video game scores. One reason being that it can be terribly sporadic and unnatural to play since much of what IS being played has to double as a sound effect. Anyone remember "We 3 Katamari"? Heh, well the Warsaw Philharmonic is listed in the credits as having recorded for the game.

  11. The Orchestra on Iwata Explains Mario Galaxy · · Score: 3, Interesting

As for the music, it's actually not uncommon for the orchestra to only need one, maybe two, takes from complete scratch. Impeccable sight reading coupled with an innate sense of what a piece is musically saying are the makings of the first call musicians that get called to these sorts of jobs. And it can be fairly rough too. If you DO blow it and they have to re-record on the account of you more than once, well you suddenly become the SECOND call guy.

  12. MMO Kill Videos on Mom Sues Music Company Over Baby Video Removal · · Score: 1

Kind of makes you wonder why we've yet to hear anything about clips such as World of Warcraft boss kill videos that more often than not double as music videos.

  13. My Owner Beats Me on Does Computer Use Actually Cause Carpal Tunnel? · · Score: 3, Funny

  17. Maxwell's Silver Hammer came down upon Paul's head on UK Copyright Under Fire Again · · Score: 1

Paul McCartney, you say? It just so happens that my roommate came back to the apartment last week with a copy of Abbey Road in his hand. A bit of shrinkwrap and one $cdparanoia -B later and I had Abbey Road on my computer. So tell me, am I going to Beatles hell?

So, in the end, is the money you take equal to the suits you litigate?

  18. Re:Neither of the above. on F(OS)S for Learning a Musical Instrument ? · · Score: 1

It's true, I rather dislike trying to teach or play with people who learned the rudiments of their instrument while being horribly addicted to a tuner. They rarely have any concept what-so-ever of how to fit into a chord, how to tune themselves on the fly, or to even know when they are wrong.

There are too many "Moosik 4 Dummies" approaches and beginners books these days that do nothing but cradle you and never teach how to actually PLAY. This may, perhaps, be seen as a positive thing as to get people active in the creation of music and art instead of being so God awful passive (this really is a problem with our artistic culture these days, people need stop doing nothing but consuming and join in on the artistic creation). However, it mostly just creates a culture where people know where to put their fingers to make the pretty sounds come out, yet they still have no idea what they're actually doing which makes it impossible for them to create anything on their own.

As a side note, I DO own a rather nifty three way metronome/tuner/pitch producer that I picked up for $25. It has a jack on the side for hooking up electric instruments to it for tuning. I've only used that particular feature once when a friend used it to tune a guitar which had every string nearly 75cents flat. Other than that, I use it mostly for the metronome feature and I don't see any sort of computer software replacing it any time soon. Convenience and portability are what truly matters here (I don't think even your fancy little Macbooks will fit on a music stand).

  19. Peanut Butter and Jelly on Halo 3 'Feels' Like Halo 1 · · Score: 1

To me, Halo is the peanut butter and jelly sandwich of videogames. Back in the day, it was a great comfort game as playing it with your friends was a blast and it was rather easy to pick up and play. And I played it a lot. Heck, I don't own an Xbox, but I managed to accumulate an obscene amount of game time on it. Now, however, I can't even fire a single shot in Halo without feeling annoyed, flustered, and even a little nauseated. I don't know what happened but now I can't stand to touch the game in any way shape or form.

As for the soundtrack, well...I listen to soundtracks a lot. Heck, I listen to (and play) music a lot; it's why I'm more than half way to my bachelors in music. As such, the praise that is awarded Halo's soundtrack is often misplaced and a bit blown out of proportion. Oh, there's nothing BAD about the music, the music is good, it's just that it's missing A LOT of context as well as a certain...touch. It doesn't feel like the songs were at all loved when they were written, as if a great deal of talent dwindled away because he wasn't THAT interested in the project. The music REALLY hits a brick wall just before it gets past being "catchy" and moving onto being "memorable" (and memorable doesn't mean that it's stuck in your head because you played ten hours of Halo straight last night, that's conditioning).

  20. Holding Out on Beyond DirectX 10 - A glance at DirectX 10.1 · · Score: 1

I think I'm gonna hold out for DirectX 10.11: For Workgroups. But really, I'm a bit tired of game websites across the net losing their loads over the prospect of DirectX 10. As far as features are concerned, I fail to see what is getting people so worked up about it over OpenGL.
