It shows that the OS wasn't locked down as tight as it could have been. Start playing with classified systems with operational military status and you have to start locking things down. Yes you can start using some flavour of *nix but it isn't always necessary if it's set up right.
When it takes 7 minutes to reapply a ghost image to a workstation it doesn't matter what OS you are running than wasting time trying to figure out what went wrong with the machine. Unless it is more than one machine.
Sorry but I think I am an example. I used to buy albums all the time but since Napster I have only bought two in the couple of years (and both times I was not able to get to my favourite P2P app due to restrictions on internet access (on the road for work)
Cost of living is less.. if you are getting paid in American dollars. It appears that the major companies that work on both side of the border in general seem to be starting to price their products the same just in the countries currency i.e $10Cdn = $10US. Cuts down on accounting issues.
However my trips to the states have shown that getting premium liquors (i.e scotch but not beer) is cheaper in Canada (esp Alberta and NorthWest Territories)
I live in Ottawa and never heard about it. Hmm. Maybe it was due to the fact that the two big summer events that anyone talked about here were the Hope beach volleyball tournament (today) and Bluesfest (which started yesterday).
I know! But if you look at the common things: 1. Two girls grow up together and go through good and bad times 2. 1 girl dies of some disease (usually cancer) 3. bittersweet ending
Which MS apps? I know that initial install for the big ones (Office, Project, Visio) needs admin access which makes sense but once it is installed all the user specific info is stored in the user's specific area of the registry.
The only caveat to this is older programs that were based off of 95 and some early 98. To get the Designed for Windows 2000+ badge a software developer needs to follow these rules.
Plus is it MS' fault if people don't do what is recommended practice?
I wouldn't say impossible. HKEY_Local_Machine = System HKEY_Current_User = User (or HKEY_Users\
And the registry settings are separate in two files. The user's settings are loaded into memory from the NTUser.Dat file located in the user's Profile folder.
If you wanted to change a specific System setting in the registry for application (lets call it Blah) you go to HKLM\Software\Blah If you wanted to modify a user setting you would go to HKCU\Software\Blah (or HK_Users\\Software\Blah. Once there select the appropriate key and change the value to what you need set
It isn't rocket science. Just a different mindset.
However I do agree the registry is big and searching is a pain if you don't know where to look
I think you are looking at two possible commercial issues: 1. Buyer beware. It isn't up to the store to ensure you know all the facts. (assuming there is nothing that is going to cause harm to the person or their equipment) 2. A store does not have to honor their sales. They can sell you a piece of shit and not accept it as a return
Going out on a limb here but could it be that the president doesn't have that much influence and that the reason it sucks is that the government itself itself is the creature to blame. Presidents come and go but the government doesn't change?
The funding here has got pretty bad. I have heard of classes where kids will bring in lots of pencils and pens and the teacher will pool all of them and spread them among the other kids. Now this is a friend of a friend heard this. If it is true I don't know. Can anyone verify?
Canada does have great schools. The funding is a tad tight (ok that is an understatement).
I spent 5 years in the states from grade 7 through grade 11. The biggest difference people see is that in Ontario at least we don't have as many sports teams (or facilities for it). We may have a football, baseball, hockey and track teams but the school I went to (mind you it was an upper middle class school) also had tennis, golf plus the US has the Junior as well as Varsity teams.
Mind you the population of my high school in Canada was less than half of what it was in the US.
My rule of thumb is try not to live in a neighborhood where you may get stabbed, shot, mugged. If it costs you more to live somewhere for a little more safety it is worth it. Plus the 1/3 only works in an area where they don't have extremely low rental availability
I would say they aren't as big out east either. Their name power isn't as big as it was when Fully Completely came out. Around then they seemed to have been the Canadian band. Now not so much
Add the ability to block a whole domain name in the Junk Email feature in Outlook 2003. It has the ability to add a whole domain as Safe Senders but nothing for adding a domain as Rejected. However it is decent as it is right now
Have you seen any of the scifi stuff out right before Star Wars came out? I just watched Death Race 2000 which was made in 1975 (ok it isn't scifi per se more postapocalyptic boobie fest). I realized that it wasn't just 70's porn that was cheesy.
Not surprised by your reaction as you are in Montreal. Montreal has a tendency to be a very tolerant city as there is a huge diversity of people and ethnicities (the ones that Parizeau wanted to kick out of Quebec) so they are very friendly and welcoming. (read the last line of my first posting. Now go to Chicoutimi and try to live there with no French. You will find up in that area people are a tad different. Then again the blood up there runs Blue (it is definitely Separatist country)

That is amazing. I do tier 3 support and we have over 42 THOUSAND workstations running SP4.
I would assume that standing bipedal actually is worse than 4 legged as more energy is wasted in balancing.

I knew I forgot something (the ribs).I was out of town for that but yeah that is definitely an attraction every year.

Probably the second most dirty thing on the inside of a public bathroom after the knobs for the sink is the door handle to the exit of the bathroom.

I am slightly embarrassed to say that was Fried Green Tomatoes. One of the more man friendly chick flicks.

Just a thought..
Sorry, forgot to put that in.
I meant Ontario

NEWS FLASH: PEOPLE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO FLY BY FLAPPING THEIR ARMS'
WHAT!?? NOOOOO!
Fret not, if you watch those Windows XP commercials, it allows you to fly..
Huh, what do you mean that was artistic license...

I don't think it was that. A year or two ago, you could pick up an OEM nic for $20 CDN and it would cost you between 70 and 90 for a 3com. Now....
