    our survival instincts are about as fundamental to us as it gets ... no surprise really that it makes for compelling narratives.
    of the form life vs. environment ( vulcano etc.) and even more so when it applies to both sides ... us vs. them.
    when it comes to games it's also a bit easier to model than romance ... but i don't think games are all that more violent than movies, books etc.
    most played games are still stuff like tetris, the sims and sportsgames.

    ad field ops being servants ...
    in the original wolfenstein multiplayer the field op was actually called lieutenant and therefore of higher rank than the other soldiers. i think they only changed that in enemy territory because there were now ranks for all players and it wouldn't have fit in. (iirc afaik etc. )

    i read the article (not that there was much to read) and noticed the Next link as well.
    no problem with them using what they know.
    it's a publicity stunt because their OS selection is sold as exciting news without any clue as to what special role OSX actually plays.
    It's just a general purpose OS ... their software probably could run pretty much anywhere.

    can't imagine the OS used playing any role in such a setting.
    don't think the autonomous vehicle needs e.g. the
    new "strong desktop search tool"

    doesn't make bash useless or anything ... it's just an area where i'd love to see something new.
    despite it's central role on linux systems bash is not something one could show off with.

    i use linux exclusively and seldom touch closed source software but despite its oss flagship position i'm not much of an apache fan either.
    same goes for other big oss projects ... bash is just as lacking.
    roxen ... that's a nice webserver.
    still haven't found a better shell

    my cellphone actually fits that ... if they made a
    dockingstation for that with keyboard/mouse/display

    next-gen this, next-gen that ... they sure tried to squeeze that in a lot. it's also pretty meaningless ... gaming technology evolves all the time and just because those console marketing people want us to believe there is some huge quantum leap ahead doesnt mean there is any substance to it. same evolutionary steps as before with the pc staying ahead in every area anyway (with the big exception of ease of use :/ )

    cheaper or not you pay for the hardware one way or the other. and no matter how casual most people will need at least email, web and wordprocessor anyway ... why then would i want get locked into a platform where a single vendor controlls every little aspect.

    well i dont know a thing about windows update but with the linux update systems i know you usually download the whole package for every little change and that definitely uses more bandwidth than it ought to. guess it's a tradeoff between complexity (setup scripts in rpms etc.) and bandwidth cost.

    thing is as soon as ms offers a "good enough" search engine tightly coupled to their market dominating OS/Browser most common people will never get to know/forget there even are other search engines.

    that is one thing that makes the id Engines a lot more attractive. old engines getting gpld means
    completely free games for total conversions.
    also of note is that their free download enemy-territory is modable. Urban Terror among others gets ported to it.

    but bash scripting ??
    that's about the last thing i'd recommend
    the syntax is among the worst i've ever seen.
    it's inconsistent, needs spaces in strange places
    etc. if python is too complicated bash certainly isnt an option.

    never heard of that one ... the wikipedia entry
    of that general doesnt mention the plot but
    google offers a few pages.
    pretty interesting.

    their files based on checksum not on name.
    so all those people probably really wanted the stuff he renamed. ... still a funny read. too bad it
    is (probably) based on wrong assumptions.
