This is where the definition of a criminal breaks down, if you make it about what the criminal choose to do. It has to be about what the criminal did and how likely the criminal is to repeat the action. Whether or not the criminal choose it is irrelevant. I happen to believe in free will, because it makes me feel good. I am perhaps being intellectually dishonest with myself in this belief, however I feel my outlook would be pretty sucky without it, though I am still exploring ways not to believe in free will and still be happy.

This sort of relates to that friendship/my space article where some folks in the comments talked about how everyone having lots of money means you see less troubles, rely on less people and therefore have less close relationships. This stuff is all tied together. The next major world war or global disaster may change that. Another way people forge deep relationships is through scientific or artistic achievement - though this is rare and I am not sure exactly what it is about the certain individuals that are able to achieve this.. or what would have to change about our society to make this more common place. Probably it would have to be less shallow.. and that's probably not happening any time soon.

  16. No surprise on World of Starcraft? Not So Much · · Score: 1

I'd like to see a Starcraft MMO, but I don't see it happening, mainly because what motivation does Blizzard/Vivendi have?

World of Warcraft is the best selling MMO.. would they get that many new players who weren't already playing WoW? Perhaps they would get a decent number of people paying the same amount for both.

It's not exactly innovative - it's not much more than a single player game and in many ways not as complex as a single player game. The massive battles advertised on the box aren't really possible. Unless to you "massive" means 20-40 people. When I think of a massive battle, I think of something out of the LotR movies.

Blizzard has shown they don't have to innovate that much to keep the largest MMO going. They do add content, but it's really just a single player game with friends, in largely static world where the missions you take on have zero impact on the game world, and the winners are those who just persevere and social network the best, rather than those who are particularly clever or skillful. There is even a culture of extreme conformity - try to "claim" items that your character can technically use but are not used by most everyone else playing that same class, you get ridiculed or even outcast. Most characters for a given class look more or less the same with very little opportunity for customization. It's sort of funny that a game environment is full of a more risk averse and conforming population than the real world.

I'm sure Blizzard is thinking, "is creating a second WoW going to get us double the customers, or maybe even half as many more?"

  22. Maybe try an external device first? on Implants for Sensing Magnetic Fields · · Score: 1

Am I the only one who finds it a bit absurd that nobody is talking about how they've tried wearing a magnet around their finger for a few months? Or maybe tried to make a superthin mesh sleeve made out of something magnetic to wear around their finger?

I also think it's no coincidence that we don't see any reports of anyone using these implants for any particularly clever purpose. Anyone that did would probably have the sense to use a better designed implant or at least considered that multiple implanted magnets in one finger would eventually migrate towards one another. I supposed it's fitting that the most level headed write up is penned by someone whose signature line includes a photoshopped photo of himself with his eyes glowing blue.

Sure, this could be an awesome idea and I would even consider getting an implant like this one day. But right now it's nothing more than a bunch of hipster posers who can't find any better application than using it as an aid when wiring their house. (which you can just test with your hands if you're running normal lines, or oh I don't know, shut off the circuit breaker. Or maybe use a 3 ounce tool to detect live wires). When one of these pale posers uses their implant to navigate their way out of a desert without looking at stars or something interesting, let me know.

  23. Re:Interesting uses... on Implants for Sensing Magnetic Fields · · Score: 2, Insightful

Interesting ideas.. though the one about being deaf - I'd expect there are a few dozen better ideas specifically geared towards that that I would rather try first. I am pretty sure that sensing speaker magnet vibration in your hand wouldn't help you hear anymore than sensing sound vibration by your hand already does for anyone, deaf or not. Some things still have to be routed through the right areas of the brain for it to give you the same sense.

In almost any case I can think of I do not see any point to trying an fully implanted version first anyway. Most things can be tried with devices outside of the body, or lt east with most of the device outside the body. I'm not against the idea of implants, but only when there is a definite advantage over working external versions, or the technology becomes so well developed and its effects integrated into society where you really do need it with you 24/7. People could get FM radios implanted near their ears and say they can "sense" FM radio, but there's no real advantage over using headphones and almost certainly some disadvantages.

  24. Re:In case this sounds like a good idea... on Implants for Sensing Magnetic Fields · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why? I bet this could be reproduced with something you wear on your finger tip. Until an external device is researched a bit more I see no compelling reason to ever get an implant like this. It could be something like a paper thin sleeve that goes around your finger. The key thing being you can take it off if you ever plan to be in a powerful EMF, which doesn't seem too uncommon for someone who wants to feel EMF.
