Wait...when did they make a comic book out of the Spiderman movies? I hope they didn't mess up the characters or plot too much; everyone knows that movie-to-comic-book transfers are always disastrous (except, of course, for Fantastic Four).

Man, those sentences almost hurt to type; but I guess it was all in the interest of comedy, so it was worth it. :P

Are they just realizing this now? Hell, I remember modding Wolfenstein3D when I was younger. I made a Castlevania mod, if you were wondering (and I know you were).

Point being, user-generated content has always been a big part of all the best PC games; FPS's, Strategy games, you name it. When users can mod the game, they become attached to it and it develops a much more cohesive and less fickle user-base and expands the longevity of the product.

That raises an interesting point...why is Columbine more taboo than 9/11? I mean, people still get all up in arms about this little Columbine game, but 2 9/11 movies didn't raise nearly as much controversy (that I heard anyway); as far as I heard, the media just went around asking people if it was too soon, there was no banning from theaters.

No graphics drivers yet? Ah, well, it can make an awesome BBS or MUD server, anyway.

I love putting Linux on things, especially when it isn't destructive in any way. Even with XBox the only problem was that you can't use XBL anymore...and it required you to find and reload the original dashboard.

  16. Hoopla! on MySQL Changes License To Avoid GPLv3 · · Score: -1, Troll

Good for them; I've never understood all the hoopla about licenses, anyway. FOSS has become way too rigid, IMO. What ever happened to "here's my software. here is (maybe) my source. don't sell this without my permission."? I mean, is it possible that the FOSS movement has gone too far in trying to protect free software?

Anyway, back on topic, they just didn't want to be locked into a license that has yet to be finalized. I'm okay with that.

  18. Oblivion? on Slashdot's Games of the Year · · Score: 1

    Oblivion? Really? Okay...

My top 3 of the year (and by "year" I mean the part of the year I can remember clearly):
    (3) Warrock (PC). Chances are it didn't start in 2006, but it's when I found it. It's a nice mix between Counter-Strike-like and Battlefield-like games.
    (2) Rayman: Raving Rabbids (Wii). I put off buying this for a few of my many Best Buy trips following the Wii release beause I already had Wii Sports and Super Monkey Ball, and what more could another mini-game game bring me? A lot, it turns out. Hours of fun with friends.
    (1) Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii). I can't describe how much fun I had playing this game. Me and my roomate finished it in 36 hours, and are going through and finishing the various side-quests and going after Ganon again.

I remember when I used to be a "hardcore" gamer, giving a large chunk of my day to the game du jour before moving on to the next big one (though I'd always find myself back at Counter-Strike after a while). Can't say I miss those days...

  19. iPod generation? on iPod Generation Indifferent to Space Exploration · · Score: 3, Insightful

"iPod generation"? WTF? How is that name relevant to...well, anything?

Anyway, I'm in that age range. I can tell you that space exploration is as exciting as it ever was, but I'm indifferent (or, rather, have negative feelings) towards NASA doing it. Wasting all kinds of money on projects that are either never finished or are spectacular failures that could be used for more useful things.

  25. Cell Processor Mystique... on Sony Says Nobody Will Ever Use All the Power of a PS3 · · Score: 1

Cue the "640k RAM" jokes...oh no, I'm too late, they've already begun.

Anyway, it seems to me that Sony are betting on the mystique of the Cell Processor to get people all excited about it and give it an edge over the 360. I don't think it'll work because people who know about the hardware aren't going to buy into the hype, and people that don't will make decisions based on how the games look, not the promised potential of how the games COULD look.

Because if I'm the average consumer the "Reality Synthesizer" may sound intriguing, but if I can get what is essentially the same thing (with a larger library of games) for shorter money, I'm going to go for that.
