Maybe they can return the favor by being more Mac friendly in their desktop and sync software rollouts
They're notorious for this - my series-40 phone is in the same boat. No iSync support and no sign of it coming, either. I'd high hopes for decent series-40 support being added to Tiger but... nope! AFAIK, series-60 is there now...
Sure - but it gets to the point of absurdity very quickly. Nothing is 100% secure; everything is a compromise. All you can do is take *reasonable* precautions - SSH is reasonable, telnet is not.
Why would you ever need to log in remotely as root?!
If you're remote administering a server in a co-lo farm where you've not set up a privileged user account for maintenance. There are times when you *must* be root and where console access is simply impossible.

#6a) If you really must, must log in remotely (as root or anyone else, you must always use SSH - no exceptions! Always assume you're network is being sniffed. See (2) above.
... Google will log every URL you visit via their proxy logs. They'll ultimately forward on the requested page with their own AdWords and possibly mask other sites' adverts. Not sure if I like that..
Sure they did, but to your last comment, the point is the Shuffle is actually *cheaper* in the 1GB model than many of the flash drives of comparable size that ars reviewed. That makes their survey kinda skewed somewhat...
Just download the Darwin sources, strip out all the bits you don't need from the kernel (not that difficult, as much of it is modular). You don't necessarily need a GUI for embedded, either.
I fail to see why one can't have a zero button mouse
Here ya go (pdf) - just for you! I hear there's a USB version on the way...:-)
Actually, autoclick would be a killer - you'd need a passive area on the screen to 'park' the mouse. Furthermore, any inadvertent jiggle of the mouse could lead to unseen consequences.
Yow! MacOS X now has piles? That's true innovation. I've heard WinXP being described as being described as a pain in the a$$ - does this mean M$ got there first this time?
I checked The Wayback Machine and didn't find any mention of itunes.co.uk in there
Yeah, that's the first place I checked, too. Not a single page in the archive, considering the domain is over 4 years old.
Yes, I know about the Wayback Machine honoring robots.txt but that doesn't matter because he doesn't have one.
Well, he doesn't have one NOW!!:-) Besides, all the site is is a frameset sucking in the contents of his cyberbritain.co.uk site, so I'm guessing archivers won't archive across domains.
Just because one idiot can come up with something that doesn't get included in any of the major caches anywhere, and happens to disprove the article?
I've seen it, too; the usual 'Free iPod' harvesting scheme. I just took another look and the guy has changed the colour scheme & tidied the site in a big way. This story was all over the Register and Mac blogs since the weekend & I guess the guy tidied it up for the mainstream press....
... as Dubya probably doesn't read Science Magazine and won't be signing the Kyoto protocol any time soon. So, while the US government recognises the seriousness of global warming, they refuse to do anything about it as they claim it to be 'unfair'. Unfair is one nation producing over 25% of global CO2 emissions...:-/
(BTW, that 'fine fellow' at Science Magazine happens to be a woman:-))
Do you actually setup the server(s) and/or networking yourself or do you just resell?
We have a single server in a co-location house in London - just a 2U box - running our own distro. We pay a fixed rate per annum & the hosting company have been very good to us. The server box belongs to us. I look after all the sys op stuff while the co-lo folks do the hardware/networking support.
Care to share how many clients you have on your hosting project
We're running about 30 domains with one or two biggies (it's all relative, mind!). Sometimes I view it more as a co-operative scheme. The fact that we have complete control allows to write custom solutions for our customers. Postgres back-end with C++ cgis.
and the sort of revenue you're earning
Very little, trust me. We're not making the effort we could be to attract business but at least the whole setup pays for itself each year.
... I teach reading and writing to adults in my spare time. Of course, I don't get paid for it but some things can't be bought. It's my thanks for having had the chance at an education where my own parents didn't.
For money - well, I'm involved in web hosting. Building sites doesn't pay any more - not for me anyway - so I just do the hosting side. The money isn't great, but it's fun.
I also buy and sell stuff at garage sales. Hey, don't laugh! There's money to be made there if you know what you're doing...
XA is Sacramento Building A (iMac Rev 1), XB is Sac Building B
SSG is also Singapore. FTN/FC = Fountain, Colorado. F = Fremont, CA (very old!)
Your G3 Desktop board must have been very old! They closed the PCB factory in Cork shortly after the G3 started up. Dunno how your logic board ended up in the US unless it was a rework that ended up back in the supply pool...
You specifically say that you didn't mention Konrad Zuse on purpose, because you do not consider his Z1, Z2 and Z3 machines as electronic computers. You are wrong.
Hi Andrea! Nice to finally see you here on /. Just another grateful fan saying 'hello' ... :-)

From the first line ... 5%, not 25%. Big difference ....
Tsk, tsk - copying Apple again? What's with the canine project names anyway?

Just wondering ...
Well, you can download it right here!

Correct! It means 'magic' (or wizardry!) in Irish. I live in Ireland & teach the language part-time when I'm not geeking out ...

Strictly speaking, it doesn't. However, Darwin does, and it closely tracks MacOS X releases.

G5 Desktops and XServes, actually. I know this because I work there (tho' I mostly work from home these days).
Weather's terrible today, isn't it? :-)

Wow ...
Macs have never been made in Cupertino. They used make them in Fremont for a while, and in Sacramento but those days are well over ... :-(
Why??
