his notebook battery life has more do with the whole design then just the cpu. With most modern notebooks, the power difference between a pentium-m and a transmeta, compared to what the rest of the notebook items use for power (screen, hard drive, etc), is minimal. A pentium-m might use a watt or two more in power, but thats nothing when the screen eats up (i am making these numbers up, but they should be in the ball park) 20 or 30 watts, 5 to 10 for the hard drive, 10-20 for mother board, etc.

I am elated that nasa has landed sucessfully. At the same time, i am still quite sad over the apparent failure of Beagle 2. While I am an American, I dont see this as a "I win, you lose" situation. I dont care who lands a probe on mars, be it us, ESA, China, Russia, etc. Anyone who lands a probe there and gets useful data scores a victory for ALL of us. I also hope the ESA doesnt give up on doing these kinds of missions in the future.
Every time an aoler tells me about how they never got email, i always tell them the same thing: Aol is not a real service provider (you have to provide service to be real in my book) and that they can continue to expect poor quality email for as long as they use @aol.com. I have no love for yahoo, but they are LIGHT years ahead of aol in the email area.
First: a lot of programs either dont make use of smp or use it very poorly for any number of reasons
Second: the P4 (and its derivatives) make for a shoddy smp platform because they all share the same memory bus. Amd's dedicated memory bus per processor (with the opteron) gives far better smp performance, and benchmarks of the xeon vs opteron confirm this.
It used to be that a winmodem was a dirty name, but with modern processors, a winmodem eats up such a tiny % of cpu time (well under 1%) its not funny. Winmodems have one advantage over standard hardware modems, when you upgrade the drivers for a winmodem, its effectively a firmware/engine upgrade since a winmodem does everything in software.
thats why many of the major blacklists such as spews are overseas, the vote buyers have ZERO control over them. As far as being sued, my server, my rules. I have EVERY right to accept or deny traffic coming into my servers. The day someone can be sued for that is the day we'll have a communist government in power.
I am sure the second some vote buying piece of shit starts to spam, the major blacklists will list them. Nothing like a spews listing to bitch slap common sense into a spammer and his isp.
if your trying to go with low power (watt wise) but reasonably decent high power (cpu wise), the intel pentium-m notebooks are a worthy option. Pair it up with a decent video card and you can even do some reasonable gaming on it.
what have they EVER contributed to the net besides a series of operating systems that tend to do nothing but break standards and put massive security holes into the hands of the masses? It wasnt even until win 2000 that Uncle Bill had a decent tcp/ip stack, which was conviently borrowed / stolen (depending on your point of view) from free bsd.
Did m$ design any of the core net protocols? Dns? bgp? smtp? nntp? http?
I didnt think so, and their contributions to the net are little to nothing.
I believe distributed.net's client was the first program of its type to download information from a remote server, use idle cpu cycles to calculate whatever, then resubmit it back to the central server. I ran distributed.net back in 98, more then a year before seti came out.
well at least your appeals court doesnt whole sale agree with the corporatists. Here in the US, we have a company (directv) that will sue you simply for owning a smart card programmer. And unless you have a few hundred thousand dollars laying around handy, your only option is to get extorted for $2000 (i think thats the current amount they are extorting for). All because one greedy corporation decided that any one with a smart card programmer must be pirating their crap.
Thats the US (in)justice system for you. Of big business, by big business, and for big business.
I'd pity any American (Disclosure: i am an US citizen) who would take on the DVD-Jon role right now. Between the MPAA, RIAA, and Ashcroft and the republican regime, there probably would be no end to the dirty tricks and massive thought crime prosecution that would result. Hell its only a matter of time before people making mp3's are declared copyright terrorists and sentenced to lengthy jail terms in cuba:)
at least there's one country where corporate fascists cant buy everything. I hope the prosecuters are fired afterwards, wasting tax payer's money to shill for a bunch of scum bags in suits is hardly in the public interests.
and post the entire spam with headers to NANAS. Thats a usenet group where people report their spam to, it helps establish a pattern of who is spamming, and keeps companies from later saying they never spammed. Also some of the blacklists check NANAS and will make updates based on who is spamming.

What a typical fundamentalist christian statement you have there. "The search for extra-terrestrial life is only a substitute for the search for meaning within one's self and with one's God."
Translation: Dont be searching for ET you sinners, cause if you do find proof of intelligent life out there, it shoots giant fucking holes in our dogma. Thats why the catholic church, ever an institution thats quick to condemn anything that crosses their ideology, burnt Giordano Bruno at the stake for even suggesting the possibility of intelligent life that was not on earth.
As far as your assertions that ET would of already heard us and visited us if they existed, there are MANY possibilities that can include intelligent life not traveling here for any number of reasons. But that goes into the realm of speculation. Seti is about hard science, and the seti project is extremely cautious about making any sort of claim.
Ie is just too insecure. Look at all the spyware that utterly rapes it. With Mozilla as mature and stable as it is, there is just zero excuse to use ie for daily surfing. Sure there are the rare occasional times you need it for crappy sites that refuse to run on standard compliant browsers, but 99% of your surfing time should be in Moz (or opera or anything else).
i know this is a joke, but with current generation products, the intel stuff runs a LOT hotter then amd stuff does.
Ever since intel moved to the P4 line, they've had constant heat issues and the only reason its not totally out of control is that the P4 has a kick ass thermal throttle built into it that clocks down the cpu if it starts reaching certain thermal limits. You can even remove the heatsink outright, and the cpu will clock down to something absurb. Clamp the heatsink back on, and the cpu will run up to its mhz rating.
and started firewalling the worst spammers that are hitting them. Most of the big mail providers, be it for political reasons or plain incompentence, do a piss poor job of controlling spam thats incoming.
and therefore will be sucktastically slow. Aol has a shoddy slow network that has been overloaded ever since they went to all you can eat dialup. If your gonna use cheap dialup, go for flex.com (note i am not a customer, but thats who i recommend when people need a decent dialup).
