granted i am not an expert regarding china's exact military capabilities, but i dont believe they have the air power necessary to overwhelm Taiwan's air force to the degree necessary to have a sucessful airborne invasion. And a sealift ala D-day probably wouldnt work for the same reason, Taiwan's air force (we sell them a LOT of F-16's) would make short work of it.
We (americans that is) live in a republican regime that is about one thing: Of big business, by big business, for big business. NOTHING ELSE matters to the regime. Be it the war in Iraq, epidemic and non ending corruption, pandering to the religious right, the ultimate goal is to profit big business directly or indirectly. The pandering to the religious right serves big business's interest because a poorly educated religiously extreme public is predictable, and tend to vote consistantly republican (which of course consistantly votes tax breaks and other favors back to the very same big business).
Its all really a viscous cycle. Government decimates education, leading to more religous extremism, which leads to more republicans being elected, which leads to more laws favorable to the fortune 500, who then contribute even more money to the same politicians.
Sorry for rant, but thats why education and basic research and things like a trip to mars will never happen with this regime. It just doesnt suit their cronies.
rather interesting story, one with lots of good morals inside it.
I think the guy planned quite poorly considering he was overflying the south pole. One shouldnt indulge in such a journey without making some serious contingency plans.
On the other hand, I think both the US and NZ governments are being a bit of an ass. I would imagine selling him 100 gallons of fuel for a fairly high price (i'm sure its not cheap to bring in there, plus call it a stupidity tax) isnt a major strech on their part. But then bureacrats never seem to have a problem picking the worst possible solution:)
it uses poorly coded timing loops, and generally was never designed for the newer hardware. Things like usb 2, firewire, etc probably wont work at all, or work very very poorly on win95. Also, a lot of hardware coming out now only have drivers for 98 and above.
i'd try ebaying it anyways, the facists at mpaa might not even notice.

good luck EVER getting the vote buyers er politicians to do anything with that kind of financial outlay. Between the environmentalists (gotta protect that desert turtle ya know?), miltary at ntc, offroaders, nimby-ists, etc, you'd never see something like this done in the US any more. Not that we couldnt use it badly, I-15 is a mess any more between LA and vegas.
but then i could care less anyways. I got sick of Bigpond's massive outgoing spam, and their complete lack of a clue in responding to it, so i ended the problem permanently. For someone people, there's spam. For everyone else, there's iptables:) ( For the clue impaired, i firewalled all of bigpond's network off from my mail server)
its simple. We teach to the lowest common demoninator. When you have a school thats packed full of illegal aliens, children suffering from drug addiction since before birth, etc etc etc, it looks bad to the school district if you flunk 70% of your high school students when you try to teach them latin, complex math, etc. So now you baby sit them for 4 years, and if the student doesnt ditch every single day, rape a teacher, or commit some other violent sin, they'll graduate.
While I dont think its cool to be banging a 17 year old when your 27, i dont think it should be a felony either. But in our prosecute at any cost purtanical society, its a bad risk to take. About 2 years ago i had the chance to nail a REALLY hot 16 year old, and i decided to not go through with it, even though California is a damn liberal state. All it takes is a pissed off parent and a ambitious prosecuter, and your just plain fucked.
the argument you make is one that was debated between Edison ( a low voltage dc fan) and the various people (telsa and a few others i believe) backing a high voltage ac system. THe high voltage ac people won for 2 reasons.
A: With Ac, you can use transformers to adjust the voltage to whatever level you need.
B: Because its higher voltage, you can carry a given amount of power (watts) at a lower amperage, which means you lose less power to line resistance. At 12v, you'd lose so much current over the power lines it would be useless.
this is a bullshit law, but fortunately it will impact my users and myself on a minimal level. Why? I heavily firewall off spamming isps at my mail server plus i do several rbl checks after the firewall. Any spammer stupid enough to even try spamming me gets an immiedate block. So bring it on Dma, i still got PLENTY of space in iptables for you.
