  1. Fun but not massively practical on Using Java 5 Features in Older JDKs · · Score: 5, Insightful

I've worked in a an environment where 1.4 and lower is mandatory. This was down to management believing that 1.5 was too new and 'untested' even though Sun obviously thought it production worthy.

These kind of people would be very scared if you tried to write code using 1.5, recompile the byte code using some new-ish open source toolkits and then putting it in to production. Then again, you could do it without telling anyone. :)

As a guess I'd say that you don't have much in the way of job experience or qualifications under your belt yet. I fail to see that you would let this happen otherwise.

It's all well and good to do some work experience over a short period of time but if you've been working for more than a few months and still not being paid, you're being taken for a ride. In the UK, your next company has access to your salary details. Generally you will be paid a figure relative to your last wage. You can see what kind of trouble you might end up in if you set your standards to low...

    Aside from that:

Can you still claim unemployment benefit if you play World of Warcraft?
Surely I won't have to pay tax if I'm a student right?
What about if you're a minor?
Will I get a tax deduction for using a normal mount instead of a gold guzzling epic mount?
How much gold do I have to earn per month before I change tax brackets?

  11. True Here... on Socializing For The Win? · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a junior java developer for an investment bank in London I see there is certainly a drinking culture here. Its sort of team building to go out for a few pints with guys from work. Aside from that it can never hurt to mix with you managers and colleagues in any kind of social situation outside the office. Its just that drinking is the easiest one to do as there is a bar somewhere near every office here. If senior management know your face and have had a few laughs with you, they're more likely to respect your views in the office and reward you on bonus day. The best gossip and 'career advice' are usually heard outside the office anyway. It might not be the healthiest or cheapest pasttime but at least its better than golf...

  16. 64KBps - I like the sound on Analog Revival Means Vinyl Will Outlive CD · · Score: 1

I've decided to re-encode all my mp3 audio at 64KBps. I like the watery distortion and warmth it adds. Bloop, bloop, bloop. Its only so long before it catches on and everyone starts doing it. It adds a richness that wasn't in the original recording and all my friends will think I'm cool because I can store 4x more music on my iPod. Hihats? Not anymore. They're phasing, spacial, psychotropic wotsits now.

I know what you're going to say...

"What about analog?" Well, for that I record it onto cassette! For that authentic nostaliga I pull all the tape out and scrunch it, just like it had been chewed up by a cheap player. I also like to break it then sticky-tape it back together. That missing section really adds a certain mystery element. "What used to be there?" I here you say. Who knows, its what ever you imiagine it be and thats infinitely better than any CD or vinyl.
