This may be common geek knowledge but I didnt learn it till a few years ago. All those AC adapters you have (speakers, chargers, etc etc etc) suck up power whenever they are plugged in, even if the device they power is OFF. I always thought I was saving a majority of the energy my computer uses by turning off the monitor. Turns out that those lil bad boys just really SUCK. I am suprised that they dont have some way to well... NOT do that?
I kid, I kid! A little John Stewart humor there for ya
Even after reading the comments and the story and a other stories just like this, I don't understand why I want a camera on my cellphone, and also since I pay for data access by the meg, I dunno if I wanna pay for one either. Now, the camera on the palm is a good idea, but id rather just have a digital camera with a microdrive.
So there I was getting a replacement vest for my tux for my best friend's wedding and Im being all badass, or as you say it, debonair to the chick thats working there. I feel like im king cock of the walk!
So, as I switch cars in the parkinglot, the bestman points out that my fly is undone and has been the whole time......
I am trying to get a VPN setup between windows 'clients' and linux using freeswan. I have freeswan/ipsec installed and running, but I have no idea how to setup the ipsec.conf file, how to simply used shared secret, or how to get DHCP over IPSec to work.
Ive been reading the fucking manual all weekend and am lost. I signed up for the freeswan mailing list and its just loaded with spam. The archives arent very helpful either.
I have an apointment this morning but helpful links (AC posts work so you dont have to blow your karma) or you can 'hide' your email if you are willing to help
I can also be found on irc.enterthegame.com in #linux , #linuxhelp and #rosewood
ps - ill take a karma bashing on this I know, but I wish/. had something similar to a general forum for stuff like this
I know a good weekend project would be for some experienced users to help me setup my VPN in #linuxhelp on irc.enterthegame.com or they can reply and tell me what IRC chan they want to use or if they would prefer email, icq, msn, aim, etc.
Basically I need to give people relatively secure (encrypted would be best) access to our locale network. How I was looking at doing this was using the linux box as the router/firewall. I basically need to have the remote PC be given IP addresses and work like they are on the network locally (either via DHCP or I can simply assign them static local IPs, 10.0.0.x).
I need to setup redhat 7.3 not only to be a firewall/router for a local network but to also accept incoming connections so it can act as a server for Win2k/XP VPN clients
I am so fricken lost and I need serious help!
hop on #linuxhelp on irc.enterthegame.com or reply and tell me where to go!
Any/.ers willing to spend a few hours helping me out would be greatly apriciated
Ill try pushing record - because right now we just use composit video in to the VCR and turn the VCR to channel 00 and voila. The only problem we have is that the picture is pretty shitty and changes brightness... a lot!
I wondered this myself. My mom's TV only has Coax in so we go from the DVD to VCR to TV which has never given me any fits on any movie I have tried to watch.
I beleive it was designed to withstand such an impact -- but if that was how it was actually implemented is yet to be seen. I know when the internet was all new and cool they used to say that the USA could be nuked and the rest of the world would be fine for connections. However, there have been stories over the years to the contrary.
Im not familiar with most Euro lines, etc. but I use GMX for my primary email... and if that goes down with this Im going to cry. Any idea how I can check?
I would not qualify for BOFH because I would back up their system first and when they complained that nothing was there I simply asked where their backup was at. One girl almost started crying cause she thought she lost some emails from her fiance. I told her I was LUCKILY able to recover but I may never ever ever be able to again, but she had already accepted they were gone so she learned her lesson.
One guy refused to do backups so I did them for him and deleted his DB. I charged him $1000 to restore and he had no idea - but that was kinda a mean thing todo. In all honesty tho, he owed me well over that in back invoices that he NEVER paid up on, so in the end it kind of evened out.
This is an Ask/. that I have seen before Here is my ideal PDA:
The demensions are similar to that of a legal pad full of paper when it comes to LxHxW. The height should be at most no thicker then todays iPaqs.
The screen should be easily readable, backlit, and full color. It needs to easily handle different fonts and display them nicely.
Bluetooth is at the heart of the connectivity process for this bad boy. Syncing with the PC should be done with bluetooth. Using it for your cellphone should be done via a bluetooth earpeice module. The phone portion should be modular enough to support major carriers in the US of A. Communication to accessory devices (such as a detatched keyboard) also needs to be handled by bluetooth.
Expandability is a key. USB and Firewire ports make the most sense but some kind of CF slot or PCMCIA makes sense for an accessory you always need. I just talked about bluetooth for syncing etc. because bluetooth is ideal for short-range. Making this PDA 802.11b accessable is necesary so it can be used house/office wide.
With the size being a full sheet of paper, long battery life should be easy to obtain. So should onboard docking for the cellphone accessory. Another possible accessory would be something like a mini screen. This would talk to the big mama via bluetooth and could quickly be used for getting information such as Datebook, Phone#s, etc and could also be used as the dialing aparatus for the bluetooth phone adapter.
The ability to securely network and actively work between others of these ideal PDAs is a MUST! Whiteboard, chat, etc. between two PDAs in a room shouldnt be too hard since they are going to be bluetooth / 802.11b enabled.
A good amount of storage is not crazy these days with the state of solid-state-memory. I think the ability to keep a DivX or a collection of mp3s or just a lot of pictures would be great.
Input would be customizable. I mentioned a keyboard for when you need to type something on the go. However, I think stylus input is perfect. Due to the size and memory, it could store everything as normal text input and wouldn't HAVE TO translate it to ASCII, but that would be prefered. Also a grafiti system would be available. Since it is expandable and should have a fair ammount of memory on it, voice record/voice recognition/voice2text should not be hard to implement, especially if you can use the cellphone adapter to interact with this mama.
Again with the docking. All accesories should be able to connect to the main PDA for recharging while the main PDA is being rechared / should use the same power input as the main so that you dont have to have different chargers for all the accessories.
How are they any different then blockbuster? You can't copy these movies and you arent suposed to copy the ones from blockbuster - and I would wager more people have access to VCRs and blockbusters then computers with net connections to do this.
They obviously bought the movie and now they rent it out
You show me one enviromentally friendly vehical that will give me the features I want, namely I dont want to hit a rabbit and total my car, I dont want to be limited to 55mph on the KS highway system, I don't want to be limited on how far I can go on a charge, I want acceleration for when it is needed, and a whole lot more. One of my trucks has a V8, my car has a big V6, and my power truck has a big V12 - and I use my vehicals, a lot.
I am very proud of my 999 on the Nokia 6190 - but I often have wondered if 999 was the cap, because I played for a VERY long time and ive gotten into the 900s many times before that w/o much time spent. Oh course, that is on the fastest speed.
I now have a samsung phone with 0 games, sigh -- my old samsung at least had othello, which I had over a 1000 wins in.
My mom's cricket phone has snake but it tends to get 'bogged down' and even on the fastest setting, at times it goes stupid slow and has issues responding. who woulda thunk it that a cell phone would run low on memmory
I have and love my Palm Vx and it kills me that its no longer on the market. It is slim and efficient. I love the charge on the cradle and 8megs is more then enough for my palm. It kills me that when I service plan this Vx, I will no longer have a Vx. Oh so sad - teardrop, teardrop.
Ive gone from Palm IIIe, IIIxe, Vx and none of them have ever given me major fits. My little sister uses the m100 we got for free, my mother and mother in law use the IIIxe, my fiance the Vx, my aunt the m505 and my uncle the m500. We all LOVE all palms and have never had any major hardware problems. My aunt even dunked her Vx in a toilet and it worked okay for a few more weeks, then we service plan'd it.
Quite frankly I get really angry whenever I go into my County offices (recently for a name change, also for tags, and to pick up my W2s from the ocational County job I do) and see Windows XP running there. I know they are on the new Microsoft license that everyone is bitching about.
I get very grumpy when I see my tax dollars wasted - especially on the local level, because I know of so many things here in my city that money could be going for. Then, to hear it being wasted on the federal level seems even more wasteful because I know its not in the hundred of thousands range but yet in the thousands of millions range.
Being a small time consultant, sometimes its just nice to hear other people say what Ive been saying so Im not insane
They have no conference room and are basically in a cubical environment
The funniest part is the lady fired one girl for running windows 2000 on a laptop because "it was so insecure" and the lady that got fired refused to buy win98 from this other consultant for $200. -- yet she wants wireless (and im sure she nor her consultant have not the first clue in how to secure such a network)
Currently I am in the situation where I am trying to talk an office out of spending $6000 from one contractor on a wireless network. Their office is small and has absolutely no need for a wireless network (yet alone at the $6000 price tag). The lady in charge of this decission has no idea what she is talking about and has been brainwashed by her "personal technician" (who has qutie the cush job - $500/mo consultant wether he does something or not).
But the point of my post is this: just because you can go wireless does not mean you always SHOULD - there are times when a wired network makes a hell of a lot more sense.
Hows about the use of Opiates in patent medicine and then in a majority of pain killers being sold in drug stores was causing a major adiction problem and was also causing quite a bit of deaths, from the random droping of the bottle of laudnum on one's foot to the stupid mom giving their crying baby a little morphine.
That is just painful - why do they have to wait so long? I deduce that asian markets are last due to piracy issues (although the logic is flawed - if I lived in Japan and could buy a screener on the street for a few yen and the movie wont be playing for a few more MONTHS then I would - however, if it were at the local DynaPlex then Id just go see it like I do here in the States)
I do not get this crap about spider-man vs star wars. Can the two movies not co-exist? Can we not see both? If we liked Star Wars more then spider-man are we suposed to see it two times as much?
Im sure spider-man and star wars will do fine internationally

Wow, my University just got linked. Now the suckness that is our webpage will be reveiled to the world. Damn damn.
I would not trust anything that comes from a profesor at WSU. Think of David D's character in Evolution...
Comes from Israel, damn cheap jews ...

The brightness isnt even that bad so I barely notice it, especially when I watch from any kind of distance
