WoW is the most popular MMO as of yet. Alot of people who would normaly not be tempted into these bad behaviors now are simply b/c it is easy to get into, and there are always friends who want you to come play with em.
Now, I am not saying this is WoW's fault, I am simply saying WHY it is so prevelant, it is just that more poeple are playing. Admitedly WoW's game curve is also an addition to the problem that people face. The low levels have alot of rewards that can be gotten relatively quickly. However as you advance it takes longer and longer to get rewards, but it is nice and gradual, so you get ussed to thinking, well, just another 10 mins to finish this quest, well half and hr will let me finish this instance, well I can run this instance in an hr then spend some time crafting, etc etc etc.
btw, refferencing D&D in this is the wrong game, D&D was never said to be something that will ruin your life (unless hanging out with 5 other people on someone's house once or twice a week is a ruin...).
I admit, I have never gotten the idea that the first response to a large screw up is for the CEO to retire (IE, gets fired with a nice big severance package). Is it really their fault?
Is it the CEO's job to make sure that some one doesn't do something squiffy with their stock? I always thought that was the job of security/layers/other people, not the CEO. Doesn't the CEO come up with plans for how to make the company grow/turn a proffit/recover from a scandle?
oh well, I guess I am just not cut out for Corporate America.
If they show up in a piece of fiction, I would realy hope that the focus was on the characters AS they are involved in these activities, not on the activity itself.
For a nice quick example, take GTA:SA. You have your characters, and you have the character advancment they go through, most of it is take up by cut sceans between missions, and the random commentary durring missions. I would not be that hard of a streach to have CJ walk into his brothers house and get a mission from him when he is making dinner.
Meh, I personaly think that a video game CAN be just as great a piece of narative as a TV show can be.
My personal favorite for arguments like this (that the game trained him how to shoot a gun) is that they use it for EVERY case, including the ones where the game could NOT have trained him to use a gun (Like GTA).
Trying this on on an FPS, I can sorta get (except for the lank of relation between an FPS gun and a real gun). However, tryign this out on a game where you AUTO AIM just does not work!
cmon, I for am having a hard time finding the R1 button on my rifle so that it will aim at some one.....
Any Dev worth their salt will encorporate this into their design.
Remember, if we can come up with all these problems just sitting here wishing we could play with the Wii now, think about everything that Devs will come up with when they have the actual console to work with.

I used Linux (with BlackBox as a WM) when I was programing in college because it was minimalistic, and there was nothing there that I did not put there!
I do no work at home, and thus have no reason to have linux installed, thus I still use windows. However I strip it down as far as I can.
I like my UI clean, neat, simple, and controllable!
I am a windows user (yes, I know I will be shuned for addmitting this), and my preffered OS is Win2K (it works for what I want it to, and that is primarily games).
Up untill recently I just ignore anytihng about windows that is not Win2K (I admit I have to use XP at work, but I have done everytihng I can to make it look and act like 2K). However, with more and more mention of games that will be "vista exclusives" I am starting to wory that I will eventualy actualy HAVE to switch (I stuck with DOS untill I had to use windows for games, then with 3.11 till I had to "upgrade" to 95 for games).
So for those that have been ussing Vista, Can you strip out all this silly extra garbage and make Vista look and act like 2K? Can I make all the gadgets/widgets/whatever they are called quickly disapear and not waste CPU cycles? Can I turn off all the bubbles and colouring and effects? Can I make everything flat? (I like sharp edges, one of my largest dislikes about OSX/XP/others is this urge to make defaults rounded and pretty looking) Can I make the colour scheames nice and simple? (a solid blue title bar?)

Then again, if they just port all the models/sprites/etc, then it will tank.
Cryptic will be creating a game in direct competition with another one of their games, and it is not one of those cases where "well, I want both of the racing games!", as most players only play one MMO at a time.
I am also VERY curious as to what elements of CoH/V will leak into MUO, how they will be handeling signature characters, power design, costume design, etc etc.
Also, now that the game is MADE by the copyright holders, will we see Wolverine, W0lverine, Wolv3rine, Wolver1ne, Wolverin3 EVERYWHERE? or will we be seeing "GenericSuperHero4893"?/me wanders back to geeking over a new hero MMO
My keys points on WoW? HUGE Community, not that hard to find good poeple to play with, though I admit I am no where near up to raid levels (level 33 priest atm). The game is beautiful, nuff said. There is high end content. The grind is not THAT bad if you are only going for levels. However if you want to actualy be viable you NEED to grind for gear/whatever. That is my first complaint. My second one is travel time, I hate WoW travel time. All classes should be given a movement increas spell at level 30 (or possibly even lower, but with speed increasing as you level). Also combat can bog down to same 'ol same 'ol really quickly. Only so much customization with in class. Generaly there are 2-4 viable builds for a class. And ofcourse cookie cutter characters suck. (lvl 60 gnome warriors with that helm look friken stupid)
On CoH/V? Character design rocks over everything. Alot of customization of each class between your primary/secondary choces and your power pools. a Bubbler plays 100% differently then an Empath. (this is a BIG plus to me as I am an altaholic). I find I like CoH/V Combat alot more then I do WoW. More variation in what you can do, less "well we HAVE to have **** class or we fail it". A group full of Stalkers can be scary, a random mix is deadly, don't have an empath? so what! we have a bubbler, we are not gona be taking dmg anyway! No Defender at all? so what, we have that much more DMG/Mez. Travel powers at a nice early level made me happy beyond all reason. Cons? No one plays any more and is now impossible to find a good group. No end game content. the last few levels suck for grind.
All in all? I tihnk CoH/V is less grindy, with better combat then WoW (up untill end game).
However, I pick WoW over CoH/V atm because I want to play with people (the entire point of an MMO in my mind). I want to convince some of my RL friends to lay off WoW for a month or 2 and play some CoH/V with me, but I don't know if I will be able to.
So for a non-initiate into the cult of Bungie, could some one please explain how they plan on making games that consist of sometihng OTHER then Master Chief running around blowing stuff up?
I know that Marathon and Halo are suposedly linked some how. I know there is supposedly a plot to Halo (I could never actualy sit through one of the games to find out).
Just how could an RTS be made outta the HALO franchise? And wth is Peter Jackson working on for HALO?
Parents know about the movie ratings because they go and watch movies as well. Most (not all) parents to not play video games, or stoped playing video games by the time the ESRB was really around.
I doubt that when the movie system was first started up that there was a large push/campaign/whatever to make sure parents understood what the raitings were about. They just learned aobut them as they went to movies. Combine that with the fact that the movie industry caters to a much larger selection of the population and you can see why movie rateings are known, and the ESRB ones are not.
oh, and as a fun little note, it is alot harder to get an M rated game then to get into an R rated movie (this is speaking from personal experiance.)
You can either just not update, or wait till the mod community comes out with a plugin for your favorite flavor of server mod that blocks/disables/resets prices.
