This. For a living I do support and spend most of my time speaking to people who really shouldn't have been granted admin privileges on anything more complicated than an etch-a-sketch.
This trend seems to be on the increase as more and more customers outsource their in-house development/admin/support to cheaper outsourced less skilled labour.
Same here, my 15" MBP with nvidia hasn't crashed on me since installing Lion... maybe I'd better reboot it every 5-10 minutes just so I get the correct user experience;-)
... where most of the Supermarkets have had a home delivery service where you can order online for years.
I've used Tescos before and it works pretty well although I'm picky enough about fresh produce and meat that I'd rather visit the store for that.
For stocking up on tins, packets, cleaning products etc it was great when I didn't have a car but I tend to use it less now I can drive myself out to the store.
The reason Paintbrush is the best application they've ever written is because Microsoft didn't write it.
I've got installation media for Windows 2.03 kicking around somewhere which came with my first Microsoft mouse and it's actually ZSoft PC Paintbrush which was bundled with the mouse.
The mention of ZSoft was dropped in Windows 3.0 and apart from support for things like GIF and JPG now, the application has changed very little since Windows 2 (Well if it ain't broke...)
No matter how skilled your DBA is there will always be something they can't fix! With an OS database that leaves you with the mailing lists (I'm aware that you can buy MySQL support) and if you can't track someone down who can help you with your problem then you're pretty much screwed.
DB2 and Oracle are perfectly capable of falling over, however the reason that the license and support contract are worth the money is the fact that if the sh*t really hits the fan then as a last resort you can always get one of their experts on site.
I'm quite intregued! How do you classify Solaris as immature considering Solaris 1.0 (SunOS 4.0) was released in 1989 and SunOS has been around even longer than that?
Linus didn't even start work on Linux until 1991 and Linux wasn't really widely used until the 2.2 kernel was released in 1999 which was also when Solaris 8 was released.
Solaris and Linux both have merits but I'm a bit mystified as to how Solaris is immature and in that case what your definition of mature is?
I like both browsers but prefer Firefox and use it at home.
At work I have to use Opera because Firefox and Mozilla don't have a "Bypass proxy server for local addresses" option, without which our intranet will not work... I know I could add the site (and the 15 or so other urls for various other internal servers) to the "No proxy for:" section but I'm lazy and having a tickbox for all local stuff would make my life a lot easier!
I actually live in the UK, and I really don't see why everyone is making such a fuss about having a national ID card. Lets see... forms of ID I currently have on my person are...
2 Credit Cards Photocard Driving License Rail Pass Work swipecard complete with mugshot
Oh I also have a mobile phone thats broadcasting my approximate location and at home I have a passport.
Personally I would like to see the UK Passport and Driving license merged into one card with a chip on it! The UK passport is a rather inconvenient size to carry about and the UK driving license is just insane... You get two bits, a small photocard and a bit of paper in a wallet, and only those two bits together actually comprise the driving license. The photocard on it's own means sod all, but does at least give me a conveniently carriable form of ID
Maybe I don't object to ID cards, because I don't actually feel I have anything to hide.
Amen! I'm getting sick of games being released across all platforms without any consideration being given to the control systems.
The best example I can think of is X-Men 2 Wolverines Revenge! I was unfortunate enough to encounter this title on the PC first and it sucked! The mouse was barely used, there was no option to invert it and was generally just a pain in the arse to play!
As I thought the game sounded cool (Wolverine Stab! Wolverine Kill!) I picked it up for the PS2 secondhand and cheap and I actually found it enjoyable and fun to play!
I often wonder how many other titles on other platforms have been killed, just because the developers couldn't be arsed to adjust the control system accordingly to make the game play more like what users of that platform expect.
Route is just another one of those words whose American pronunciation us UK English folks find highly amusing.
Other examples include Buoy (Boy) and Quay (Key)... granted that the UK pronunciation of buoy is not exactly intuitive but how you manage to get "Beweee" out if it is beyond me.
I'm not entirely convinced that MySQL has produced anything patentable anyway! (Unless monumentally slow transaction handling using inodb tables counts)
I can't think of a single feature in MySQL that doesn't already exist (or have a near equivalent) in PostgreSQL, Ingres, Informix, Oracle, DB2, or Thunderbird. All of which have been around a *HELL* of a lot longer than MySQL and could probably be considered to be "prior art"
This may have been slighly justified... the default wallpaper when you install XP (You know the one with the green grass) looks exactly like the set they use for the BBC Childrens programme the Teletubbies.
All it needs is a few rabbits and a sun with a kids face and it's there!
Your comment highlights exactly what is wrong with the open source community in general, where your "You suck, RTFM" attitute seems remarkably common.
The parent got it dead right, if Thunderbird want to gain mass acceptance and be used by everyones granny everywhere, then this is the kind of issue that needs to be addressed!
Telling most peoples granny that to get their email back, they need to copy the weirdly named profile directory to c:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Mozilla and then edit prefs.js is probably going to earn you a blank stare!
Don't get me wrong, I love Thunderbird but it still needs a fair bit of work. (Using mozilla again now though as I got bored with having Tbird and Firefox seperate, not to mention the fact that most of the useful features in mozilla seem to have been removed in firefox)
While I can call bullshit on some of his points, I can agree with the parents point of view on documentation!
Linux has many strengths, but quality of documentation is not one of them! I dunno maybe I've been "spoilt" by running *BSD, Solaris and hell even AIX... When I type "man whatever" I expect to see a decent manual page, not some half assed documentation suggesting I see the relevant info page... Info in my opinion is the biggest, un-navigable, cumbersome heap of shit known to humanity!
Don't get me wrong, I love linux but I'm fed up of having to trawl through incomplete man pages, half written HOWTOs and generally shot to hell in newsgroups because I dared to ask a question!
Yes there is plenty of linux help out there if you look hard enough, but linux is mature enough that you shouldn't have to risk getting shot down in flames on a newsgroup just because you're not an 31337 h4x0r
Ah yes, the joy of running WatchCat in the hope of being able to identify and kill the process that was locking up WPS.
You might want to check out the book Snake Wrangling for Kids

Was originally available for the BBC Micro and could be plugged into the Archimedes if you had the user port podule installed.
Concept Keyboard A3
Happy days, almost wants me to get my A310 or RiscPC 600 out of the cupboard.
If Windows 7 ships without IE installed, how am I going to download Firefox?

I'll let you off then!
Dealing with the cretins I've had to assist today has obviously caused a sense of humour failure!

I really hope that Harrison Ford is going to play the father of someone. Otherwise I can see it now...

Badly written code is difficult enough to read, the thought of badly written code with embedded badly written XML makes me cringe!
Maybe this makes me shudder just because I haven't caught the XML must be used for absolutely everything bug yet!
Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, ie used to be part of Yugoslavia.
It's quite close to Greece, but not part of it!
I'm definitely with you on that one... I'm a big Neverwinter Nights fan and though I'd give Dungeon Siege a go!
Talk about immense boredom, run forwards kill things... run forwards and kill more things etc.
It definitely had potential, but was untimately lacking in plot and was way too linear for my liking!

Erm it actually looks like BeOS used to... Which was around before KDE so you could say that KDE is a crappy BeOS theme!
All the current "desktop" environments are starting to get far too much visual kruft for my liking anyway... it's the main reason I use WindowMaker
