I am writing this in Firefox in Vista on my MacBook Pro. One year ago (almost to this day) I made the switch because I had bought into the hype. I told myself I'd give it three months to make my decision. When the time came I was struggling to be as productive as when I was in Windows. However, I realized that I had not yet learned everything I needed in the Mac to give it a fair shake. So I extended the test. Finally after 10 months I made the Switch-back.

What about all of us that gave it a try and end up switching back? We just get modded down because of the anti-M$ sentiment. I'm no M$ lover -- I run all Linux servers and refuse to deploy Active Directory in my organization because I believe it is a gateway to "everything M$". However, many people like me may find that they are actually more productive in Windows.

A few weeks ago I got on to buy one for a linux server at the office. The final price AFTER SHIPPING was about fifty dollars more than the price with MS Windows Home Edition. The disparity comes from the fact that the version w/ MS windows had free shipping. Also, the Windows version had a larger hard drive and didn't let me choose an 80 GB drive like the 'n' series did. So in the end I of course bought the Windows one with bigger hard drive for $50 less.

A lot of people have been saying that the format war doesn't offer enough for consumers. It seems to me that if I could buy a DVD now that also had HD version on it then I'd start stock piling my HD library now and wait for the players to become more reasonable. If studios are willing to put out these discs for $20 then this could be the difference maker and push HD-DVD to the finish line to beat out Blueray. This assumes that Blueray can't do the same thing (dunno) and that the movie studios would be willing to put the consumers interests at the forefront (ok, stop laughing).

I'm glad you asked. My comments aren't meant to be flaimbait either. But I'm just a guy. Owen Thomas is a journalist for a fairly-respectable magazine.

I made the 'switch' to Apple a few months back. Half of it was because of the hardware and the other half was the advanced GUI of OS X. I have been a Windows(TM) desktop user prior to that (I use Linux for all servers). For me, productivity is important. And clicking around w/ a mouse is not the way to do it. I'm still learning shortcut keys on OS X but what I have found is that it is incredibly inconsistent. Simple 'highlight current position to the end of the line' shortcuts vary from application to application.

So while I love the UI of OS X, the consistency of it is not there yet. I want the latest AND the greatest. And whether people like it or not, when Vista comes out, it will be both.

Sure, Vista is delayed - and the number of people who are going to go out and buy it are limited. But I for one am looking forward to Vista coming out so I can upgrade my new Mac Book Pro from OS X to Vista.

But what about the vast majority of people that don't know the intricacies of bitsettings and book types and after toasting a few CDs they give up. Sure, they can get a torrent of the packaged release that circumvents these measures.

How many more roubles would they get if just 1% of people intending to pirate the game bought it instead?

While there are many "techie" people like greatcelerystalk who know what they want, we have to keep in mind that Amazon is selling to the entire spectrum. My mom, new to computers this year, finds comfort in the Amazon experience. It's an entire shopping mall--just what women love (yes, I am generalizing). So shoppers who know what they are looking for, or are simply buying on price, may not use the recommendations, I would suspect that a significant, if not majority of the population may be enticed to buy something. I admit to having purchased several books that were recommended to me.

Now, the more significant issue revolves around the depth of the information Amazon is amassing on you and me. Sure, you can learn just as much about me from my blog or slashdot journal, but that's my choice. I recognize that Amazon has stated "opt-in" information. But when was the last time you read a EULA or the Privacy Policy page for NewEgg? You can be opted-in to just about anything. Then, personal private data is stored, waiting to be hacked into or. Or better yet, published in the name of research!

Ultimately, this trend will not stop. Twenty years ago, had people known the level of personal information that we would be storing today, they would have had the same reactionary quivering that we feel today. It's simply the unstoppable progression of technology integration into human life.
