My post was a bit short on details because I didn't want to get the details wrong. That's something that mature people need to be concerned about when they're passing on secondhand information. But vague secondhand information is better than no information at all, as long as it's not misleading. And I understand computers well enough to tell you that my information was accurate.

cash-strapped students and self-styled anti-capitalist hackers.

Before installing new software, it is always advisable to read the
documentation. Unfortunately, an unpleasant surprise was in store for me
in the "required configuration" section of the manual.
I was shocked to learn that Linux Mandrake only runs on Pentium
processors, meaning that my hopes of testing the water with my old Gateway 486 were dashed. Furthermore, a
whopping 32 megabytes of memory are required to run Linux! Although the advocates of Linux self-righteously
boast the efficiency of their chosen operating system and deride the
"bloatware" produced by Microsoft, it appears that their claims are
blatantly incorrect. Although my humble 486 will happily run Windows 95,
it seems that Linux requires far more powerful, and more expensive,
computer hardware. Is this really the sign of a lean, mean operating system?
Of course not.

Sadly, not even being able to install Linux is just the first of my many
complaints. A brief perusal of the
features of Linux Mandrake reveals that Linux is sorely lacking many
crucial productivity applications. For example, why isn't the industry
standard web browser, Internet Explorer, included with Linux? Despite the
best efforts of the experts at the Internet
Engineering Task Force to encourage adoption of the Internet Explorer
standard, the creators of Linux seem to think that they know better. By
refusing to adhere to recognised standards, Linux is simply undermining
its own credibility.

Similarly, almost all of the world's most popular and widely used software
is completely incompatible with Linux! It may surprise you to learn that
your copy of Microsoft Office, Outlook Express, or Lotus Notes will not
work under Linux. Those who wish to use their computer for recreational
purposes are also out of luck, for almost all of the most popular games
are unavailable for Linux. Although a wide range of software is freely
available for Linux, these pitiful offerings are mostly unfinished, unreliable and do not
bear comparison to their commercial counterparts.

Computer security is also an area that seems to have been overlooked by
the developers of Linux. In these times when hacking and viruses are
commonplace, it defies belief to learn that no anti-virus software is available for
Linux. To add insult to injury, there is no Linux version of the popular
ZoneAlarm firewall. By using Linux,
you are issuing an open invitation to the hordes of ne'er-do-wells on the
Internet.

The shortcomings of Linux are obvious. Without even installing Linux
Mandrake, I have exposed several fundamental flaws. Surely it is not too
much to expect that, after ten years of development, the creators of Linux
would have addressed these problems? The real question that the
prospective Linux user must ask himself is, "Why bother?" After all,
Microsoft Windows comes free with most PCs and there simply isn't a need
to replace it, particularly not with a product of inferior quality.

Although it is always tempting to support the underdog, Windows XP will
be the deserved victor in the battle ahead. I recommend that those
Adequacy readers who are hoping to upgrade their operating system
patiently wait for the release of Windows XP, rather than foolishly
wasting their time, effort and money on Linux.

You're new here, aren't you ? Don't worry, stick around and you will get the hang of it. This site is frequented by people known as 'slashbots'. They are around 14 years old, and they just LOVE Linux. (Not enough to use it, mind you over 70% of slashdot's readership uses Internet Explorer)

These slashbots or bots for short, are arrogant teenagers who think that the 'libertarian party' present a valid form of government, and that the answer to every software problem is 'open source'.

Its fair to say that sarcasm is wasted on these people. In between downloading porn and MP3s and playing Quake III Arena, these people have little time to actually write code, but the irony of their pro-open-source position (like sarcasm) is wasted on them.

The site which has been referred to as 'worse than goatse.cx' is in fact a discussion site which has a very different approach to debate.

Slashdot's moderation system amounts to a form of censorship whereby the groupthink of posters is rewarded with 'karma' and any controversial opinion is immediately labelled as 'troll' regardless of the merits of the arguement.

On the other hand, the clever people at the site which is worse than goatse.cx have taken a different approach.

Instead of pretending to be against censorship, whilst covertly practicing it, the editors at adequacy simply banned trolling. Anyone posting a troll is likely to have their post deleted. Apparently this hardcore approach has caused people to stop and think before posting, and the signal to noise ratio is very good over there.

Adequacy tends to steer clear of the tech/nerd stories, so it is not exactly a drop-in replacement for slashdot, but it shows how the slashdot moderation system could be improved upon.

Anyway, I think adequacy shows slashdot the way forward in terms of controlling the excesses of the 'first posters' and 'penis birds' and 'goatse.cx' and 'hot grits' etc etc. They just delete them. And the debate is better for that. Censorship is not always a bad thing.

His humor is postmodern - his funny is based on the fact that Deliverance and Trek star Wil Wheaton is making the jokes. That doesn't make it bad humor - just self-referential.

I wasn't sure if they faked it, or if Wil is really like that. Either way, the so-called 'adequacy' site sucks, so I won't be going back there in a hurry.

And, contrary to popular belief, BSD is not dying either.

As an example of the power of this OS, consider the popular website adequacy.org. Apparently they switched from Linux to FreeBSD, because it can run Scoop up to 40% faster than Linux. (they claimed that Linux's TCP implementation perfomed poorly).

I think Linux needs to take a few leaves from the FreeBSD book, especially in the security arena. FreeBSD is streets ahead of Linux in this crucial area.

The thing to do is litigate. Follow the money. The abusive user may not have much to lose financially, but his/her ISP sure does.

Use tools like traceroute to detect the source of the attacks. Then use the arin whois database to find the service provider. Then SUE LIKE CRAZY.

A lot of people think the Internet is not part of the real world, so they think laws do not apply.

They are wrong. There is plenty of case law on this subject.

The point is to stop looking for technical solutions to social problems. They agree to a terms and conditions when they visit your site. Make sure they fulfil their side of the legally binding contract.

The website I hate has a 'terms of use' which all posters are legally bound by. It even goes so far as to prohibit the use of the wget client. They seem to have a heavyweight legal team there too. And so far, apart from a minor DDOS attack by a jealous rival website, they have not experienced many problems, despite the highly controversial subject matter they seem to deal with.

So to conclude: Sue their asses off.

I've been thinking about this for a while, nothing frustrates me more than having windows obscured behind something else, and having to either drag the front window out of the way, or else alt-tab through everything. In a lot of ways this is what first got me hooked on linux as a desktop replacement for windows, the well developed multiple desktops system. So I can hit a key combination and cycle from one desktop to another. One has my mail and IM open on it, the other one browsers, the next nothing but terminals, and then filemanagers/xmms.

A lot of application shave taken a better look at how they're actually used. Sometimes the UI is bad bad bad (StarOffice 5.2). Other times it's really appropriate, like the tabs in galeon which are great for organizing all the browsing into different windows based on subject (for those of us that like to have 20 pages open at once. Right clicking to open in a new tab is great for s site like slashdot, K5 or Adequacy, where there might be 7 or 8 links on the main page that i want to get to, but not forget if I get sidetracked.

When I first grasped mozilla's power as a platform I had the epiphany that since 90% of the apps I ran were network based and mozilla provided an API for creating spiffy looking network applications, it wouldn't be a stretch to do everything in tabs within one maximized window, and that it could eventually function as an OS for lightwieght computers. If you type chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul in mozilla you can get the entire mail application dropped into your browser window. Press ctrl-T on a recent build and you have a new tab to browse in, but you can switch back to your mail real fast. Add Jabberzilla to your sidebar. Throw in a few more apps from MozDev.org and you can do most of what you'd want within a single window. It's in no way complete or stable, but it's enough to shed some light on a usable way to avoid the worst of window overlap. Apparantly there is a company that's working on using mozilla as an operating environment for appliances called OEone. You can check out the screenshots of their calender application here.

We already have a modern successful non overlapping interface, and it's called PalmOS. Just as it took a limited use platform to accept "modeing", probably not a lot of desktop users will be willing to give up the poer that free windowing gives them, but for appliances, or special uses, such as subject-centered web browsing. Things like tabbing and fullscreen interfaces are a good idea, and have already been implemented.

I am not comfortable with someone in such a powerful and important position in the linux community using his position for his own personal agenda. I think he should have resigned back then, and am glad he has stepped down now.

Although I must make clear I do not like the DMCA, it is still clear to me that such a conflict of interest and abuse of a supposedly monarchal position above such political realities is very wrong indeed.
