Who will save the Ackermansion?
It may be off topic, but Forrest J. Ackerman's marvellous collection of books, artwork, and movie memorabilia is currently being auctioned to bits on Ebay.
Apparently Forrey needs some cash to retire. Sure would be nice if a benefactor could step in and preserve the collection intact. Visit the Ackermansion here. -

Message Board Easter Egg
I wrote a message board/forum system for my company a few years ago. If you search for the string "make your site stronger!" (that was the company motto at the time) in the board's search engine, it would give you a credits page that plays a familiar midi file in the background. The product is now on life-support, so not as many sites use it anymore, but there are a few sites out there that still use it. (Here's a fairly famous one.) It probably doesn't work on non-IE browsers, though.
-
Linklater directing Scanner, Soderbergh producingAccording to Ain't It Cool News, Richard Linklater is set to direct A Scanner Darkly. Disappointing, since Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney had optioned it and I was assuming that Soderbergh would be directing (instead, he and Clooney are producing). But hey, they're doing Solaris, so all is forgiven...
I'd doubt that a studio would spend the money to option all of Dick's works considering that they're going for truly astounding amounts of money. A Scanner Darkly cost $2,000,000. Remember Impostor? That went for about $1,000,000.
-
Wolfgang Petersen also directing 'Ender's Game'
Which, in my humble opinion, going to be a lot more interesting than a fanpiece like 'Superman Vs. Batman'. Well, if you get to make both, why not?
The problem with the Ender's Game movie is that the studio is apparently trying to submarine Petersen's efforts into getting a cast that he feels is realistic for the story. You can read the AICN rumour here: http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=12681
Essentially, it boils down to the fact that Petersen wants to include a racially mixed cast to reflect the in-book and real-world race ratios at the time Ender's Game is supposed to be set. The studio has vetoed his plans claiming that white audiences won't want to go unless the adults in the movie are all white.
From the rumour:
He was flat out told "Not a chance in hell. There will be a handful of token characters from other races but every other child will be white." As the studio execs pointed out, if there are too many background characters that aren't white, white people will be afraid to go see it. -
Re:Other good Murakami
I've been a Phil Dick fan for years, ever since I read A Scanner Darkly... I was surprised - I didn't hate Minority Report...As a movie, I enjoyed it, but I'm still waiting for someone to bring Phil Dick to the screen properly.
Well, this may be good news (or not, depending on your tastes) - Ain't It Cool News reported that Steven Soderbergh (Sex, Lies and Videotape, Out of Sight, The Limey, Traffic) and George Clooney's company has optioned the rights to Scanner, and the rumor is that Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Waking Life) is thinking about taking it on. On the plus side, these are people who generally make intelligent movies (I'm going to ignore Ocean's 11 here); on the minus side, well, Scanner's perfect as it is - why make another version of it?
Evan Evanson
PS: Regardless of the point/lessness of making a film of Scanner, I'd love to take a look at the script Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich) wound up with when he took a shot at adapting it.

Re:Why the Star Wars Reference Jon?
You've implied that you're better than me because I enjoy Star Wars.
No he didn't. He said that Star Wars was bloated which, AFAIK, is not insulting or uplifting to anyone's character (w/ the exception of Lucas, I guess). I don't think it was out of place at all to mention Star Wars in a film review because it's the big thing right now and he's offering an alternative to what is probably still a packed theater. You always see movie reviews bring up other movies for comparison. If you think *this* is Star Wars bashing, go spend an hour on Ain't It Cool News. Those talkbacks can make any review look like a shining example of positive journalism.
"Groupies?" I think I've been called worse. Besides, that Natalie Portman _is_ kinda cute... -

Have you read Moriarty's TPM script review?I'd take anything AICN's Moriarty says about a Star Wars script with a grain of salt, considering how much praise he lavished over the Episode I script. Here's an excerpt:
Let go of your ideas of what the film is going to be, everyone. You can't be like Jeffrey Wells and walk into this ready to hate it. You can't possibly know how textured and wonderful the story Lucas has to tell is going to be. The thing that makes THE PHANTOM MENACE possibly my favorite STAR WARS story so far (on paper, mind you) is the details. The time off has done something unexpected to Lucas as a storyteller -- it made him better. Considering how he's always doubted himself as a writer, I think it showed remarkable confidence in not putting this script through another writer, someone who might have diluted our return to this place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Even the wonderful Frank Darabont would have diluted it, simply because what we got wouldn't be pure Lucas anymore. It's remarkable to read the actual words Lucas put on paper. There's just enough on the page to get the actors moving, but he doesn't really describe the world. What's there is just raw STAR WARS, straight from the tap -- the characters and how they relate. That's enough, though, because these are real characters that are instantly iconic, but also truly human.
Let me put the final nail in the coffin. Here's what he had to say about Jar Jar:
I am delighted to report that Jar Jar not only works, but that the Gungans are, as a whole, a welcome addition to the mythology of the STAR WARS universe. Jar Jar is an exile from the other Gungans because he's clumsy. Not just a little, either, but monumentally so. Once Jar Jar meets the Jedi, though, that trait begins to pay off, with Jar Jar mistakenly bumbling his way out of danger and up the chain of command until he ends up a general in the film's final battle. This works well in the script. Jar Jar is funny, but the humor in 1977's A NEW HOPE is one of that film's strong points. This script balances the humor with honest, direct writing that gives Jar Jar (dare I say?) a soul. He may be a sidekick, but here's betting that Jar Jar Binks becomes one of the biggest EPISODE I stars once audiences get their real introduction.
You can read the rest here. I'll believe Lucas has actually made a good movie when I see it finished and on the big screen. -
It's going to be good!
Other than the various rumors at TheForce.net, I found this on AintItCoolNews a few days ago. And it seems that this movie is alot better than Episode I. With Yoda Fight scenes, Amazing scenery of an underground "gotham-like" Coruscant's underworld.
I'm really excited about this, and can't wait to see it. Finally something else to be excited to see on Fox other than the Simpsons (except latley). -

According to Moriarity at AICN, the script to Attack of the Clones doesn't suck that bad. But who knows how it will turn out... Oh, and this FOX trailer also starts at exactly 8:59:17.

Aint it Cool News' Review
Harry from Aint it Cool News had a review of the script earlier this week. From the sounds of it, it looks like Lucas is making up (somewhat) for the TPM debacle. I, for one, am hoping for the best.

Satire is protected, but it's the release date...
According to Harry Knowles at AICN:
"Now it is QUITE CLEAR that New Line would easily defeat MGM under Parody Laws, but because MGM could tie up the marketing on the film in the meanwhile... They are going to go ahead and do a new title anyways. Taking the path of least resistance."
Sounds right to me. -
Re:AintItCool.com?
For those not aware of the history, AICN is one of the net's oldest movie rumor sites. They have a style that grates on many (from crude reviews to rambling praise for odd cult films to strange animated graphics of the chubby leader of the cool news pack).
However, there has never been, as far as I know, a better site for finding out what's likely to be going on in the geek-film arena in the next six months to two years. It's where I found out that Lord of the Rings had gone to Peter Jackson. It's where I first heard that Lucas had recanted his early statements about making a third trillogy. They turned me on to such masterworks as The Usual Suspects, The Matrix and Life is Beautiful long before they were on the screen.
I also recommend the AICN: Coaxial section which focuses on television and home-media releases of films (where I found out about the Buckaroo Banzai DVD release). -

Re:PS2 / PC GamesI'm quite new to console gaming (my recent PS2 purchase is the first console that I've ever owned) and I'm having a great time playing old PS1 titles along with the new PS2 games (just remember to get a PS1 memory card, because the old games can't use the new PS2 memory cards).
I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy IX and hope to have that finished by the time FF X comes out at the end of the year. Recent news about the Resident Evil movie has me thinking that I should give a few of those titles a try as well.
My local crack-dealer^H^H^H^H^H^H^H game store also has used Dreamcasts... perfect for some Crazy Taxi and Shenmue huh? I worry that this whole "console" thing is an addiction that grows. eeeeeeek.

Harry's been sucking on that teet forever...
Seriously. Harry Knowles has exactly NO journalistic integrity whatsoever. All these junkets, etc. are avoided by legitimate journalists. Only the swill you see discussed in this article are brainwash victims of Hollywood's PR machine. This group squarely includes Harry Knowles and has included him for a LONG time.
His biggest problem (other than his terminal weight situation) is that any caress of his ego by an actor or director inevitably leads to positive reviews on his site of any POS they release. This effect can also be seen in his tendency not to ever write a bad review of ANYTHING.
Case in point: The studio responsible for Godzilla flew Harry to NYC to watch the premier. The atmosphere was like a rock concert complete with beach balls bouncing around the crowd. Result: Hypnotized Harry came back writing "Godzilla good movie."
Another example: Detroit Rock City makers flew Harry out to see Kiss in LA and see the premiere. Keep in mind that this is a guy who at the age of 26 still lives with his dad and has no job prospects outside his ad banner sales. When rich studios come along dangling trips to LA or NY, this guy is powerless to resist.
How do the big league journalists handle these enticements? Credible reviewers such as Roger Ebert refuse to ever go on junkets. They watch the movies and write about them. Period. When the subject of a review requires that a writer do something that could be considered a gift, the publisher will usually pay the way of the journalist or refuse to send her. An example of this would be if a travel writer has to write about some new concorde flight to Germany. The writer might go on the plane and check it out, but the magazine or newspaper would pay for the ticket.
Here's a VERY good one-pager on this topic.
Seth -
Re:I always get the same feeling...
Difference: no one is getting paid (either directly or by "perks") to say that Mozilla is great (and it is, which is why I'm posting this using Mozilla nightlies). When you see a glowing quotation attached to a movie, it's because someone was almost certainly paid to say it.
Getting back to the topic, this is why until recently, I've been a huge fan of Ain't It Cool News. But even Harry seems to be slipping into the machine. He recently wrote an entire series of articles based on his trip to the set of Lord of the Rings. It really smacked of the "we'll fly you to New Zealand and show you a good time, you just write whatever you want," sort of approach to tainting idealistic reviewers.
But AICN is still the best place to get movie news that's anywhere near honest and biased only by artistic concerns (which often include number of zombies ;-)

Re:Some professional quality Moulin Rouge reviewsHarry at AICN waxes effusive and gushingly positive
Wow! Stop the presses!
Harry gives almost every movie a "gushingly positive" review. Otherwise, the studios wouldn't continue to let him see movies before they are released. As it is, they sometimes forbid him to say anything unless they are sure he is going to say something positive (his preview of the last year's Grinch movie is one case in point -- he admits Ron Howard & company only gave him permission to "go public" with a review of an early rough cut after they were sure it was going to be a positive review).
The guy was incoporated into the Hollywood hype machine long ago. He's nothing but an amateur PR-man. The best part (at least as far as the studios are concerned) is that he works for peanuts. No big salary and cushy office. Just some graft. You know, a few trips out to see screenings, a few free video copies of movies, a few little souveniers here and there. That's all it takes. He's cheap.
-
Some professional quality Moulin Rouge reviews
Well, that was useless fluff, even by Katz's usual low standards. So here's where to find some more substantive info about what's good and bad in Moulin Rouge:
Harry at AICN waxes effusive and gushingly positive
Paul Clinton at CNN is somewhat more restrained, but still surprisingly positive considering his usual skepticism about flashy stuff
Rex Reed is absolutely not impressed, and strongly negative
I'm planning on catching the film, based on these reviews. Heck, even if it fails as art I'm willing to support it just because it's trying to do something different and exciting.
Cheers

Re:Two nits to pick...Presumably Frodo will be shown as 33 (hobbit age) during the party scene, and perhaps will have aging features added for the rest of the movie (movie makers are good at that sort of thing).
If Hanks and Spears were cast then it would not be a success -- the Tolkien fans would boycott, and the average people would feel the movie sucked because those characters did not fit with the rest of the story.
Have you been following the movie development closely? Here are a couple of reports on a 25 minute unfinished segment of Fellowship of the Ring shown at the Cannes film festival, one from a LOTR fan, and one from a guy who had never read the books and comments from a traditional viewpoint.
-
So what if the plot sucked...
Katz,
Perhaps you do not understand the concept of the summer blockbuster movie. Summer movies (like the previous two Jurassic Parks, all of the Batman movies, and The Matrix), according to critics and the Academy of Motion Pictures, suck. The Oscars and critics typically think that most movies that are released during the summer (with a few noted exceptions) are not worth their time, even though these films typically make two to three times more at the theaters than the films that critics do approve of.
But why are Summer Blockbusters (that suck according to the people who get to see them before the rest of the public) making so much money? Because people like going to movies to have FUN! Be as critical as you want of a movie, but know this: When critics rip a movie, it means it's probably going to be a fun film to see.
I'm not going to see a film so that I can reflect on my inner being and experience a life changing event. I go to see movies to be entertained. This is why I don't listen to film critics, and I believe the Oscars are a joke.
If you want a real measure of what films are actually good entertainment, go to Ain't it Cool News
I did see the Mummy Returns last night. Yes, the plot was hokey, and The Rock had a cameo appearance at best. The CGI effects of the final character were mediocre, but I had fun. There hasn't been a decent movie to come out in months. This is the first 'Summer Blockbuster' of the season and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't give it two thumbs up, but I would give it a large butter soaked, sloppy tub of popcorn. -

sheeshYeah, this'll work Apple. I hope you've instilled alot of confidence in your employees. I hate to break it to you, a close-minded as you are, but people will gossip regardless.
Let's think about it. Nothing (to most people) is more interesting than gossip. Knowing other people's business is just plain fun to most, myself included. So I'm nosy. I love to read rumors (film myself, Ain't It Cool News and Dark Horizons just rule) and I like to gossip about them. Wonder if this is true or if that is a fake.
The most important thing that gossip generates is PUBLICITY. When people begin to talk about your rumored products, whether they be true or not, they still are talking about YOUR company. Why else would the film industry suddenly be escorting the webmasters of those aforementioned film rumor sites to very advanced preview screenings? (This super early review of How The Grinch Stole Christmas comes to mind.)
You should not condemn those who gossip. With gossip comes truth AND lies, but whats important is the talk, not the substance. Didn't someone once say that there is no such thing as bad publicity?
Are you listening Apple?

A few factsHere is a paragraph from an article at the best (IMHO) Movie gossip site Ain't It Cool News:
At 8 AM the 'Kevin and Bean' radio program on 106.7 KROQ (a local radio station here in sunny Burbank California) had a telephone chat with George Lucas and Melissa Joan Hart who are racing at the Toyota Grand Prix. After all the racing questions George was asked about EPISODE 2. He said that "the script was finished a couple of days ago" and that he would be leaving for Australia "in 8 weeks." Then he was asked about EPISODE 1 on DVD to which he replied "it's being worked on. The work on the supplemental stuff is taking longer. It will be coming at some point." This statement and his tone of voice suggests to me that we will see EPISODE 1 on DVD much earlier than 2006.
So, lets get one things straight: This is not a rumor. This DVD is real, and I agree with another post that this wait between releases was done to make money. He charged 40 bucks a pop for a widescreen VHS with a little piece of plastic they called "true frames from the flim!" This is also called a rip-off. Which is the reason I haven't bought it. However, to get back to the point, the DVD IS being made and it WILL come out. Maybe tomorrow, maybe 2006. But those who doubt are oblivious to whats out there, and haven't spent the time to find the facts.
