Uh... this article is about operating systems - and NeXTSTEP is not dead

I toyed with taking a portable into a couple of the lecture series on my Physics masters - my notebook of choice was the Cambridge Z88. Equation editor be damned; I found it was easy to get quick at typing equations in LaTeX "$$" environments. Take the Z88 home, squirt the file over RS232 to the Linux box, then compile your notes into a pretty PostScript (when I could be bothered; another thing Physics degrees teach you is the ability to read LaTeX equation environments). I stopped doing it because batteries were more expensive than biros.

I hope the people over at LOFAR have considered all the ramifications of Pyramid Power... ^_^

First, it's not a good idea to use contact info from Domain X in the registration records FOR Domain X. If Domain X breaks, it's quite possible to end up in a spot where you can't fix it BECAUSE it is broken.

I obtained my domain only last year, when my previous ISP modified their e-mail system and broke my per-address spam filtering mechanism. As I had been using their domain, I couldn't simply transfer my setup to another ISP, but I had to give up my 50+ addresses as well (the oldest ones dating to 1998). I'm now trying hard not to become dependent on another domain I don't control myself.

If a problem with my domain renders my e-mail contact address unusable, my telephone number or snail mail address should be available as a last resort means of reaching me. I could of course obtain another domain as a backup, and let the two domains provide WHOIS contact addresses for each other, but right now I feel that would be overkill to me.

The Namecheap anonymizer is really nice, because I don't have to make a special address that discards a lot of junk mail. It shifts the burden of administration to them...

Shifting burdens of administration where they don't belong is something I try to avoid; that's rather something spammers are notorious for doing.

My six-year relationship with my previous ISP didn't prevent them from eventually screwing up the services I had become dependent on - services that I had essentially implemented myself in their Unix environment. The lesson I have learned is that I should have more control over the e-mail addresses I use, not less. Also, I like to buy fundamental services such as DNS, web and mail separately, possibly from different providers, rather than in a single package, simply to know what I'm paying for. Obtaining a spam filtering service from my registrar doesn't quite fit my view of what the role of my registrar should be.

Obtaining a domain name without publishing info is like getting a telephone but choosing not to go into the phonebook. It is the Internet equivalent of an unlisted number.

I agree that metaphor of mine wasn't exactly on the spot, but I think yours is worse. The DNS is the phone directory of the Internet, in that it translates names to numbers (IP addresses). An unlisted phone number is rather the equivalent of an unnamed IP address; you can run a working HTTP server on that without ever disclosing any domain name of yours (since you may not even have a domain in that case). You can even send e-mail to <postmaster@[12.34.56.78]> if you have an SMTP server running but no domain name. That IP address is "some form of contact information" albeit not a very convenient one.

Phone directories generally list residential addresses as well, although nothing in principle prevents you from being listed with your name and phone number only. Problem is, with a few billion telephone subscribers around the world, you can't expect your real name to be unique, and therefore you may need some additional items for identification, perhaps geographic or organizational ones.

In your particular case, you have decided that the benefits from publishing your info outweigh the loss of privacy. I have no beef with or complaint about that choice. You choose to list yourself in the phone book. I generally do not. There are good reasons for both approaches.

I'm indeed listed in the phone book, like a majority of telephone subscribers I believe. I grant you the freedom to do otherwise. However, as I don't buy your analogy between a proxy WHOIS contact for your domain and an unlisted phone number, I think your wish not to have your e-mail address listed at all doesn't rhyme with your desire to have a domain name listed in the DNS.

You are mistaken about CAN. You either didn't read the article too closely or you have no friggin clue what CAN is. Probably the latter given your incoherent off-topic rant about Linux (WTF?).

CAN stands for Controller-Area-Network. It is not limited to use in automotive applications--it is a widely used technology for industrial automation (intelligent devices that use the open communications standard called DeviceNet). In and of itself it provides no wireless functionality, ad-hoc configuration and doesn't use the IPv6 protocol (or IPvANYTHING--it uses CIP). In automobiles, it is used by electronics systems to communicate with and control various systems. The diagnostic port on mostly European cars is handled by CAN chips.

It cannot communicate at speeds over 1 megabit per second, and it cannot communicate outside of the automobile or local control system network without extra help. OTOH unlike ethernet it is fully deterministic and has reliability mechanisms at the hardware level (that is, it guarantees data packets arrive when you want them, in the correct order).

This new thing has NOTHING AT ALL to do with CAN...it looks more like "Rendezvous for Cars" and looks very interesting indeed. Of course, with all the exciting useful things comes potential abuses (mis-applied, could Big Brother monitor and collect data about your driving behaviour? Photo radar is bad enough already).

It's like a cross between the Thunderbirds car and a Citroen!

However I know that its mostly the south part of sweden that is has connections like that, since the northen part has alot less people living there.

The regulatory authorities are very schizophrenic (no pun intended) about mercury. We are warned not to eat too much fish and mercury is being eliminated from many products, but dental fillings are not a problem. Do the math. You can get as much mercury from a mouth full of fillings (10 - 20 micro-grams per day) as you can from eating fish. It is in a different form, but it is still toxic nonetheless.

And dentists do have a higher incidence of depression and other symptoms of mercury poisoning than the general population.

This is a tough problem to prove because the symptoms are so variable and a large proportion of the population has a natural ability to physically deal with mercury ingestion.

Does this mean that they also 'own' the concept of a GUI element hiding after not having recieed any attention/events after some time? After all, that's just a special case (full opacity->full transparency) of fading out.

In reverse, shouldn't this mean that any such prior implementation is prior art, since this is a special case of GUI element disappearing immediately.

Perhaps something like this? I set a different colour for the header border as well here, which you may or may not like. Also, for this to work, set the footer <td> to class=footer and remove the colour and font info (including the <i>)

I also realized that my changes make the page considerably darker. You might feel this makes the page slightly more gloomy and sinister, although I personally do not.

I did a quick redesign of your web site colour scheme by narrowing the hue separation and decreasing the contrast somewhat. I posted the modified stylesheet here if you're interested.

I tried to make your site less startling and easier to read, while retaining the overall feel.

Exactly. Anybody can learn to tune a guitar in 5 minutes if you can pick out one of (E,A,D,G,B). Alternative tunings definitely open up a whole new world in terms of emotion and sound to good guitar players, especially acoustic. But most players are discouraged from it because a) it's a pain in the ass, b) you can't really play a gig in 7 different tunings unless you have a guitar tech, and c) it kills your strings. At least a) and b) have been solved.

(If you want an example of the beauty that can result when someone bites the bullet and experiments with alternative tunings, I can think of no better example than Nick Drake. I don't think it's a coincidence that he is said to have sucked live. ;)

The short take is that dental fillings are made from over 50% mercury and that mercury is the cause of a great many neurological disorders for a great many people.

5 years ago it was controversial. Now congress (Dan Burton, http://www.house.gov/burton/) is looking into thimerisols (mercury based vaccine additive) role in autism and those hearings are beginning to touch on dental amalgams as well. In short, I figure 5 years and this will make the tobacco hearings look like a boyscout jamboree.

As for me, after removal of my fillings, OCD is gone, many other neurotic habits disappeared with it, and I went from having trouble walking and talking to playing basketball 3 times a week. It may apply to you , may not, but it's worth a look.

Very young kids have problems with attention span, reading, typing, etc. so you may want to use something like Lego Mindstorms instead of text-based programming.

Actually it's not just kids how have attention span issues who can benefit from Lego Mindstorms. If your siblings haven't yet taken high school geometry yet (or haven't had enough exposure to boolean logic), then Lego Mindstorms is a really cool to get a day-to-week-long introduction. Past that, I'd say, based on my own experience, that (when I was 11) C was difficult for me to pick up until after I learned Pascal. They both have similar structures, but Pascal was a much better introduction because of its use of natural language in most of its syntax.

You can find some tutorials here, here, here, here, and here.

The only problem with Pascal (nowadays) is that compilers/debuggers seem hard to come by. Here's a free one that might help. If that doesn't work, then you could always try something this, but I wouldn't recommend it for the beginner who doesn't even know what compilers or linkers are and why they are necessary.

Yeah. That's Nick Drake. Great stuff -- so good that (as a card carrying music snob) I'm embarrassed to admit I first heard of his work from the VW commercial. He's a folky 1970's singer-songwriter who lived a pained and short existence, and finally committed suicide via pills I believe.

Personally, I'd check out his "Pink Moon" album first, and maybe work backwards frm that; and there's a few compilations out now that are truly excellent as well. And there's a short documentary on his life called "A Skin Too Few" making the festival rounds which is supposed to be very good as well.

First of all, the ICQ protocol has been well-documented. Look at this address: http://www.algonet.se/~henisak/icq/icqv5.html, for example. As far as I saw, it's quite a primitive UDP protocol which uses magic numbers for coding stuff.

Secondly, how do you think LICQ works? LICQ certainly's got more than 10K users, and it's out of the GPL to sign various NDAs (even liberal ones!).

Thirdly, it's been there for quite a long time, and I think it is to be taken off shortly. ICQ is becoming an adware, and I don't think they'll be so liveral for long.

That shouldn't ever happen, because whoever created it first gains instant copyright protection in all countries that are signatory to the treaty.

Is is generally true that the creator of a work is recognized as one and the same person in all countries (even in those that haven't signed the relevant treaties), but the creator isn't always identical to the copyright owner.

Different countries have different rules regarding who owns what rights with respect to works made for hire. Normally such issues are resolved by explicit clauses in the work contract, but in the absence of such a clause something made for hire in the USA may be found to belong to the employer in the USA but to the physical author in, say, Sweden.

If the author dies without selling his copyright, it is inherited according to either an explicit will or inheritance laws. If the author has no living heirs, again different countries have different laws with respect to where the property ends up. In Sweden, inheritance without heirs goes to a special fund, Allmänna Arvsfonden, which awards money for charity purposes. In the USA, I believe it's simply collected by the government.

A recent, strange case is that of the copyright to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf . The Free State of Bavaria, which considers itself the legal owner of Hitler's estate, sued a Swedish publisher for copyright infringement. However, the Swedish Supreme Court declared that Bavaria was not the legal owner of Hitler's works in Sweden, and they were therefore not allowed to bring the lawsuit in the first place. Unfortunately, the publisher was in the process unable to show that he had obtained the rights from anyone to publish the book, so the Supreme Court upheld a ban on the publication issued earlier.

The contact list in ICQ is stored at the client-end (so no roaming access, you have to re-build your contact list if you migrate). Most other IM service providers (MSN, Y!, AOL) use a server-based contact list.

There are indeed loads of other such technical differences which make me feel that getting ICQ and AIM to interoperate will be quite a task. The good thing to do is to build a common IM protocol (and that's just what IETF is at). That will break the IM monopoly and there will loads of IM service providers all over the world (like Email).

I'm a system manager at a Swedish university, and it's my job to protect the privacy of our users as well as the integrity of our systems against attacks from anywhere.

I freely admit to a strong desire to circumvent any technical or legal obstacles placed in my way for no legitimate reason at all, and pointing out security flaws in computer software or service configurations - even to the point where continued operation of said software or service is jeopardized - is to me a good deed for the well-being of man kind.

I have decompiled and studied binary code without regard to any copyright on it, simply to satisfy my curiosity. I have modified the Netscape Navigator binary (international version) and configuration to enable US-strength encryption as well as change the "license agreement" nonsense into something in line with Swedish law for the benefit of our students (we don't accept "shrinkwrap" licenses over here), without asking Netscape. I routinely press the "Accept" button whenever I install software at work or at home, knowing that it means approximately "null and void" to me. I may read the "license agreements" after installation, just for the fun of it. I have transmitted encryption software across national boundaries. I have exploited security holes in computer systems owned by others, without their authorization, to obtain useful results such as improved network connectivity.

I scoff at the obscene claims made by German authorities to "own" Adolf Hitler's literary works, and I'll gladly make and distribute copies of Mein Kampf or any other garbage he wrote whenever I feel like it. I conspire with my friends to change the ways things happen around the world, whether in politics or in business, not merely by voting in elections or participating in marketing polls. I believe I do all this in full compliance with the law and with judeo-christian ethics, but if I don't, I'm prepared to defend my actions in court.

I challenge you to report all the above to the appropriate authorities, simply as an experiment to show how futile that is, and how pathetic your remarks are. I promise you that I will not have you prosecuted for making any false accusations against me (though I cannot answer for any actions by others). Ain't I kind? Believe me, it's hardly worth the cost of a phone call.

I'd rather not try to describe the project here, since I would be duplicating their own web info. Studio-quality? Yes, if you count television/video (as opposed to cinema) quality. GPL? No, but public enough for me. One has to register as a member in order to take part in the project, but much of it is visible to non-members as well. The distribution details haven't been worked out in detail, but as I understand it, the result will be made available for free (see the membership agreement for legal details).

As for high-quality script, I don't think you will be disappointed reading what has been done so far. I wasn't.
