I appreciate that it seems like Barrack Obmaha's heart is in the right place. I dont see anything changing anytime soon since he has no interest in changing the system. The ID itself might be free, but one has to provide copies of various documents to get it. Obtaining these documents can be difficult and expensive. When a mother of seven has to choose between paying bills or spending $50 to get a copy of her out-of-state birth certificate in order to get a "free" voter ID card, there's a problem.

Not everybody even has a birth certificate, you know. I had a housemate who didn't; as I recall, she had to go back to her home state and obtain some affidavits attesting to her existence before she could get a driver's license.

There are really no excuses and no reason to not have to prove who you are.

You mean in the same way that another person voting the other way negates it? That sounds like an excuse for dropping people from the voting rolls. Also remember that there are usually multiple votes cast at the same time for different government positions (President, Senate, House, local government, etc), and unless most people vote as a monolithic bloc, it's going to effect more than just a Presidential election.

Also, consider that the Governor's race in Washington (where known ACORN abuses occurred), required an additional 2 recounts, where the Republican won the first two counts and the Democrat won the last and final count.

In this case, the Democrats kept recounting and "finding" votes until they were over the top. Less than two hundred fraudulent votes were enough to win the election. So, in this case over a *million* votes were disenfranchised when the election was stolen.

To quote the prosecuting attorney in Washington (Dan Satterberg), the misconduct was done "as an easy way to get paid [by ACORN], not as an attempt to influence the outcome of elections." Yup, sure sounds like they kept "refinding" the votes in an attempt to swing the election.

The presidential election in 2000 could have had a completely different outcome depending on who was counting or how many times they've counted. I'm not excusing voter fraud, just saying that it's a much smaller problem than disenfranchising voters.

No it isn't. The sole purpose of a corporation is to serve the common good or pubic good. The first corporations granted corporate charters were the Honourable East India Company in 1600 and the Dutch East India Company in 1602. Both India Companies were shipping businesses, the Honourable company shipping goods between Britain and India and the Dutch operating between India and the Netherlands. Shipping was a risky business, a ship could be attacked by pirates, the crew could mutiny, or the ship could run into bad weather. And the ship's owner was liable for any and all cargo lost as well as for the lives of the crew. If for whatever reason a ship was lost that could bankrupt the owners. So the British and Dutch governments granted corporate charters to these companies which gave them limited liability. With limited liability the most an owner could lose is the amount they invested.

But because of this limited liability corporations were only granted charters if they served the public good. Once a business no longer served it it could have it's corporate charter revoked. Unfortunately as foreseen by Thomas Jefferson corporations became too powerful so they are no longer held to the standards of serving the public good.

4. Obama has shown his distaste of the Bush and Clinton Dynasties. Change is good. Obama has pissed all over these "dynasties" strictly for political purposes. He's already come crawling back to the Clinton's for help in his campaign. And if he kicks out all of the Clinton democrats, who's he going to be left with?

McCain, has not changed. He did have to pander to the right, just like Obama had to pander to the far left, in order to win in their respective primaries and secure donations. European governments did a pretty good job in the Americas, the NAZIs exterminated 600,000 Jews and I don't know how many others, Stalin massacred 20,000,000 and it's said Mao massacred 50,000,000. Then there was Pol Pot during the '70s in Cambodia, Saddam Hussein in Iraq, what happened in Rwanda with genocide there in the early '90s, and the genocide started in the later '90s in Darfur.

A few weeks ago I wrote a column on the anniversary of 9/11 that offhandedly dismissed 9/11 conspiracy theorists as "clinically insane." I expected a little bit of heat in response, but nothing could have prepared me for the deluge of fuck-you mail that I actually got. Apparently every third person in the United States thinks George Bush was behind the 9/11 attacks.

" You're just another MSM-whore left gatekeeper paid off by corporate America," said one writer. "What you do isn't journalism at all, you dick," said another. "You're the one who's clinically insane," barked a third, before educating me on the supposed anomalies of physics involved with the collapse of WTC-7.

I have two basic gripes with the 9/11 Truth movement. The first is that it gives supporters of Bush an excuse to dismiss critics of this administration. I have no doubt that every time one of those Loose Change dickwads opens his mouth, a Republican somewhere picks up five votes. In fact, if there were any conspiracy here, I'd be far more inclined to believe that this whole movement was cooked up by Karl Rove as a kind of mass cyber-provocation, along the lines of Gordon Liddy hiring hippie peace protesters to piss in the lobbies of hotels where campaign reporters were staying.

Secondly, it's bad enough that people in this country think Tim Lahaye is a prophet and Sean Hannity is an objective newsman. But if large numbers of people in this country can swallow 9/11 conspiracy theory without puking, all hope is lost. Our best hope is that the Japanese take pity on us and allow us to serve as industrial slaves in their future empire, farming sushi rice and assembling robot toys.

I don't have the space here to address every single reason why 9/11 conspiracy theory is so shamefully stupid, so I'll have to be content with just one point: 9/11 Truth is the lowest form of conspiracy theory, because it doesn't offer an affirmative theory of the crime.

Forget for a minute all those internet tales about inexplicable skyscraper fires, strange holes in the ground at Shanksville, and mysterious flight manifestoes. What is the theory of the crime, according to the 9/11 Truth movement?

Strikingly, there is no obvious answer to that question, since for all the many articles about "Able Danger" and the witnesses who heard explosions at Ground Zero, there is not -- at least not that I could find -- a single document anywhere that lays out a single, concrete theory of what happened, who ordered what and when they ordered it, and why. There obviously is such a theory, but it has to be pieced together by implication, by paying attention to the various assertions of 9/11 lore (the towers were mined, the Pentagon was really hit by a cruise missile, etc.) and then assembling them later on into one single story. But the funny thing is, when you put together all of those disparate theories, you get the dumbest story since Roman Polanski's Pirates.

The specifics vary, but the basic gist of what They Say Happened goes something like this:

A group of power-hungry neocons, led by Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Bush and others and organizationally represented by groups like the Project for a New American Century, seeks to bring about a "Pearl-Harbor-like event" that would accelerate a rightist revolution, laying the political foundation for invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Your basic Reichstag fire scenario, logical enough so far. Except in this story, the Reichstag fire is an immensely complicated media hoax; the conspirators plot to topple the World Trade Center and pin a series of hijackings on a group of Sunni extremists with alleged ties to al-Qaeda. Great for when you are single, but the health coverage balance changes considerably when you settle down. I'm freelance and have been since '95. Our first child cost us over $23k in medical birthing bills. I swear they just make crap up and everyone in the build gets to raise an invoice. A high deductible is fine for single life when you take care of yourself. It's bloody awful when you have kids that seem to discover new ways to require medical treatment.

This is why this country is a mess. A couple wants to have a child, but they don't save for it. The costs are $23,000, so they say "Hey, we have insurance, why not charge all the non-child-rearing individuals for it in higher insurance costs?" Unbelievable. I want a child, but I won't until I can pay for it. I've done the research on paying for it myself. The first step is to get a cash-on-the-barrel prepayment rate. There's a significant discount for doing this. Then, you can get a rider for birthing cost above a "no-pay" amount. So if I pay $10,000 up front, I can get insurance for the birth ahead of time for amounts over $30,000. I would be liable for an additional $20,000 if there are complications, but the insurance for the amounts over $30,000 are reasonable. $30,000 to birth a kid sounds reasonable to me, considering all the problems that could happen. If I don't have $30,000 to birth a child, why would I want to have a child who may cost me $500,000 in their first 18 years? The 9 months before birth at $30,000 are reasonable if the cost to have a kid can be $30,000 a year after birth.

Let's see your insurance coverage. I know other business owners, nothing to do with IT. It's the same with them. Health coverage is fscking expensive. It sounds like you have poor coverage and nothing for a family?

Most business owners use insurance for their day-to-day health needs, rather than for what insurance is for: emergencies. If I have a cold, or a cut, or a broken arm, or something minimal, I don't go and use a co-pay, I call my doctor, get a negotiated cash rate, and make a visit. I prefer not to use AMA doctors, either (AAPS is better). I tend to refuse to see doctors who accept medicare or medicaid, because their rates are MUCH higher. My primary phyisician has stopped accepting insurance as of a few months ago, and now just charges a yearly stipend for services. Concierge medicine is the future. My business-owning friends pay $3000 a year for a health club membership, $15,000 a year for golf membership, $30,000 for yacht club access (the wealthy ones). I pay $1800 a year for premium doctor care, which includes free home visits if I can't get out of bed. I believe one of my business owner friends pays almost $800 a month for health care so he can get a $10 co-pay visiting his doctor and waiting an hour to do so. I can just walk in; I visited my doctor at his home two Sundays ago when I thought I had something bad going on: it was just a rash from new detergent. *phew*

Now what do you do should you get a serious illness and are unable to work for an extended period. Got coverage for that? I'm assuming you carry no debts, the house is in the clear with no mortgage or equity loans.

30 year mortgages are for suckers. Renting for the past 4 years has made more sense than owning, and we did just that (sold our paid for house in 2003, just bought a foreclosure in 2008, rented for 1/3 the cost of owning for the in-between time).

If I am sick for a long period of time, I have savings. My businesses have semi-liquid assets. If you start working at 16 and saving 20% of your income, by 35 you should have somewhere in the range of $300,000 in the bank that can be used to pay off a small home, put towards emergencies, or just keep for retirement in addition to whatever money you're socking away for retirement. Of course, most people at 35 have a net asset value in the negative region, because they have to keep up with the Joneses

It's very easy to see what's up in Iraq right now -- if you're willing to face it. The trouble is, most "experts" aren't willing. That has been the pattern right from the beginning. We didn't want to admit there even was an insurgency, and even now, nobody misses a chance to declare that "the surge worked," as if that translates to "we win, it's over, let's go home."

Fact number one about guerrilla wars: They're not over until the guerrillas win. Mao set out the guerrilla's viewpoint 80 years ago: "The enemy wants to fight a short war, but we simply will not let him." The longer the guerrillas stay in the game, the sicker the occupying army gets. Sooner or later, they'll go home -- because they can. It's that simple, and it works. So anyone who tells you it's over is just plain ignorant. That's one thing you can rule out instantly.

But people keep saying it. The most recent and ridiculous take is that "Moqtada al Sadr is renouncing violence." Talk about naive! What led these geniuses to that conclusion is that on June 13, Moqtada al Sadr, leader of the biggest and toughest Shia militia, the Mahdi Army, sent out a big announcement: "From now on, the resistance will be exclusively conducted by only one group. ... The weapons will be held exclusively by this group." In other words, he's switching from a big, sloppy, amateur force to a select group of professional guerrillas.

Also, there'll be a non-military role for the civilian supporter, working on local politics to "liberate the minds from domination and globalization."

The glass-half-full school of thought took Sadr's announcement to mean that he's getting out of the violence business, trying to marginalize the "special groups," which is U.S. Army talk for hardcore Shia militias, and move his party to the good ol' middle of the road. See, that's classic misreading of Iraqi reality as if it were U.S. politics. It's like we keep trying to pretend that Iraq under occupation is just a dusty version of Iowa. Sorry, but a country under enemy occupation doesn't think or act like Des Moines. If you want a good analogy to what Sadr is actually doing, it's easy to find one, but you can't look at American politics. You need to go to research other countries occupied by enemy armies, where urban insurgencies started off like Sadr's Mahdi Army did -- as neighborhood defense groups protecting the locals against mobs from across the ethnic divide. And when you start thinking on those lines, there's a really close, clear parallel between what Sadr is doing now and another insurgency that shifted from neighborhood-gang/paramilitary organization to small armed cells, with civilian support channeled into an above-ground political wing: the IRA back in the 1970s.

The basic parallels between Shia Iraqis and the IRA are clear enough: They're both minorities that got stomped on by the dominant tribe -- in Northern Ireland, Protestant mobs used to burn and stomp at will when they were in the mood; and in Shia Iraq, Sunni goons went on regular murder runs in Shia neighborhoods. So both places, Catholic Belfast and Shia Baghdad, got used to defending their own neighborhoods because nobody else was going to defend them. Then they were "saved" by foreign troops from countries that had always been their biggest enemy: The Ulster Catholics were occupied by the British Army, and Shia Iraq by the Americans. Of course, it was all supposed to be gratitude and happiness, the way the occupiers saw it. They expected the slum people to be grateful. Well, there haven't been too many people in history who've been glad to be occupied by foreign troops. Even when the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia to root out the Khmer Rouge, a lot of Khmer were more angry at the foreigners than pleased to be rid of Pol

Clearly your confusing Iraq with Afghanistan. Iraqis didn't live under Sharia, although the government has taken steps in that direction since our idiotic invasion.

The government theoretically serves the people and realistically does to some degree. Private industry theoretically and realistically serves only the shareholders.

Theoretically a corporation serves the common good or public good. When the first corporations were granted corporate charters, their one purpose was to improve the common good. The first corporation to be chartered was the Dutch East India Company in 1602, and the second, Honourable East India Company. Both were shipping companies and shipping was a dangerous business to be in. A ship could be hit by a storm like a hurricane and sink. Or it could be attacked by pirates or another nation's navy, actually nations paid pirates to attack the ships of other nations. When the ship's cargo, or the ship itself, was lost the owner of the ship was liable for that loss. The owner of the cargo had to be compensated for the value of the cargo, and if any crew was lost the family of the crew had to be compensated as well. Not many investors were willing to risk everything they had on an investment in ships. So the British and Dutch crowns granted those who wanted to invest in a ship a limited liability. Investors could get together to form a corporation that owned one or more ships. Then if anything happened the most a stockholder could loose is what they invested.

The problem today is that governments have not held to the requirement that a corporation serve the common good. Instead, as Thomas Jefferson warned of, "I hope we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of the moneyed corporations, which dare already challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country", corporations have gain control over people and government.

Many of those in the US who do not have medical coverage do not want it. When did it become good to force those who don't want health insurance to pay for it? Or those who lead a healthy life style pay for those who don't exercise, do smoke, and have poor diets?

If a popular president has an extramarital affair, the press shows no fear and shouts it from the rooftops night and day.

But if the least popular president on record (backed by his administration) maintains that he has the inherent authority to kidnap US citizens at will and make them watch while his goons crush their children's testicles, the "free press" covers his butt so well that if you blink you'll miss the story.

I think you're trying to attribute to politics something that has a rather simple alternative explanation. In the eyes of the public (and therefore the press):

Ok, let's pick a salacious scandal then. Surely you remember these stories:

1. The White House was caught sneaking a fake reporter in to ask softball questions at White House press breifings
2. Although he was a fake journalist it turned out he was a real bona fide male prostitute
3. It then came to light that, according to White House visitor logs, he had visited the White House on dozens of days when there were no press functions, and sometimes did not check out till the next day
4. After a protracted period of wrangling during which the administration claimed White House visitor logs were protected by executive privilege a court finally ordered the White House to turn over its visitor logs almost a year ago
5. The White House is still refusing to let anyone see their visitor logs, even though previous presidents considered them open public records.

So where's the media circus? Why haven't we heard about this to the blue dress and blood on the glove level that other similar stories get? Why do they just report it tiny bits and pieces and then let each one fade quietly into the night?

Among many people it is a common practice. There's even Seed Savers Exchange where people can get seeds others have saved. I recently read an article on how to harvest tomato seeds to save as tomato seeds are so small. I save my pepper, I love peppers the hotter the better, seeds among others. It may not be too common for large scale farmers in the developed world though organic farmers and gardeners along with farms in third world countries save seeds. TFA even said how as Director of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance in Iraq Paul Bremer ordered Iraqi farmers to pay a tax on the seeds they saved, there was an article about this on /, "Iraq law Requires Seed Licenses". People still create their own heirloom plants and that's done by saving seeds. Googling heirloom seeds returns more than 200,000 results. Take for instance peppers, to create a pepper heirloom I want, perhaps it has a specific flavor or heat. I will save seeds from peppers like what I want, and plant perhaps a dozen seeds only from those peppers. When peppers from those plants mature, I'll save the seeds from the best peppers to plant the following planting season then do it all over again.

You can reap the benefits, for one thing you have the advantage of first to market. And by continually making improvements you can stay ahead. I brought the same point as yours in a discussion about copyrights, and someone pointed out that if a reader likes your writing he or she will support you so you will write more. What you can do is release a book on pdf then offer a way readers can order a signed hardback copy of the book from you. I used to write and so supported copyrights. But now I'm not so sure, what I'd do maybe is shorten copyright terms. Say make them 5 to 7 years instead of the life + 50 or 70 congress has extended them. The purpose of copyrights and patents is to encourage progress in the arts and sciences, and the best way to do that is by encouraging continued creation. If you can lock someone out of a market for many years you don't have much incentive to continue to create on a frequent basis.

I'd argue that it's impossible to build a system that will work when people don't respect it. For example - the third-party payola loophole farce. Another example - democracy might work when people respect it, but the rules mean nothing to "I have a PhD in violence" Mugabe.

In essenence, the rules themselves are only useful if they are followed in spirit. When they are not followed in spirit, then we need more clarifying rules until we come down to some basic rules that are followed in spirit. That's why are law books are so large - and it's still not large enough for people like Darl McBride... proof that the more we disrespect each other, the bigger the rule book needs to become.

The traditional solution is to turn your back to people fail to follow the spirit of the rules. You just tell them that they can go bother someone else. You can't force other people to learn ethics, and there'll always be that fuzzy area where the amorale can do horrible but legal things like deliberately spread disinformation about global warming. These people should be charged with treason, because they are subverting the public good.

Well, lets see, we were talking about the differences between Reagan and the first Bush's policies towards Iraq. So no, under Reagan, it was because Iran threatened us and when Bush SR. did his about face on sanctions and other policies, it was because Iraq threatened the US and Israel. I think the actual quotes were something along the lines of "to make fire burn half of Israel," with a "the binary chemical weapon". He made similar threat to our carriers in the Persian Gulf about a month before. This was in 1990 which is when Bush 1 did his 180 on policy.

There is always going to be a certain amount of blowback. I'm not sure if it was ignored or originally calculated as acceptable. I don't find fault in the logic though. It seems that if you don't have the hindsight capability to see what happened, it was sound policy until Saddam shifted and turned on us.

What bothers me is that even after it was found that Saddam was using biological or chemical, I don't recall which right now, the Reagan then the Bush Sr admins still supported Saddam. Once it was suspected he should have been warned to stop, then when verified support should have ended.

Actually it does not say the $43 million was a down payment, but it does say something I was wrong about. I had said Bush gave the Taliban the money, however TFA quotes Powell as saying "We provide our relief to the people of Afghanistan, not to Afghanistan's ruling factions. Our aid bypasses the Taliban, who have done little to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people, and indeed have done much to exacerbate it." So in that I was wrong.

It appears that Iraq didn't invade Kuwait because of slant drilling but because of a comment by a Kuwaiti official who made a comment referring to Iraqi women as 10 dollar whores. Who in their right mind would invade another country in the face of international pressure over a comment like that?
