The elite push behind this is...
... they fear us, that's why they are trying to lock down everything. They are trying to strip us of our rights and control us, via the payment and information channels we engage each other with because they are at their weakest.
The (mass surveillance) by the NSA/others and abuse by law enforcement is just more part and parcel of state suppression of dissent against corporate interests. They're worried that the more people are going to wake up and corporate centers like the US and canada may be among those who also awaken. See this vid with Zbigniew Brzezinski, former United States National Security Advisor.

Re:Why you need profits to motivate innovation
I don't think PCs are boring, no more than your average Mac, which is the same thing.
There is nothing overly special about a MacBook, other than it costs a lot and says "Apple" on it.
If you want the ultra light, ultra thin formfactor, sure, go for it... but frankly you can get a really nice PC for a whole lot less money and it works just fine.
I'm typing this reply on an ASUS 15.6" Core i3 notebook that was $349.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...
4GB of RAM, 500GB HD, AC Wi-Fi, DVD burner, 1080p display, Windows 10.
The only upgrade I did to it was replace the 500GB SSD with a 256GB Transcend SSD that I picked up on sale from Amazon for $72.
Turns the machine into a rocket for basic tasks. No, it isn't a gaming machine, but it runs everything else as fast as is needed, for less than $450.
If that is "boring", I'll take it.

Re:Theft waiting to happen
There are versions for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Amazon supports the Snowball Client for Ubuntu 12+ and RHEL 6+, but no doubt it can run on other systems. https://aws.amazon.com/importexport/tools/
Also, as per this link, they're working on chain-of-custody tracking using GPS. Amazon has already considered the possibility of theft and it doesn't seem likely to be an issue.

Re:Theft waiting to happen
And yes, excerpted directly from the service web page found at https://aws.amazon.com/importe...
'Once it arrives, attach the appliance to your local network, download and run the Snowball client to establish a connection, and then use the client to select the file directories that you want to transfer to the appliance. The client will then encrypt and transfer the files to the appliance at high speed.'
So unless the client is absolute crap, it's a pretty good solution

It's been available for a while
It's nice they've got an official box and all, but the service to send disks to Amazon has been there for a while (as a beta program).
Here is a blog post from 2009 explaining the service.
Of course, a nice official controlled and encrytped box is a far tidier way of doing things!

Re:how pathetic
TI-82 and TI-83 are discontinued. Period. Go look on TI's website and you won't find them under the current products. You may be able to find them "new" but that is just old stock that never sold. Amazon themselves does not sell either of those new, all listings that have a new link are from 3rd party sellers.
TI-83 Plus is available new, from Amazon, for 93.01 as of this posting.
If your school REQUIRES either a TI-82 or TI-83 and not any of the newer variants than that's your school's damn fault. Their is not a significant functional difference between any of the TI-83 and TI-84 product lines in their basic use.
The TI-83 Plus is still around because schools do have a very large investment over the years and it is easier if just one model is maintained by the school system. The same principal applies to computers for instance when a company standardizes on one particular model. They stick with that same base model for longer than what the consumer market might as it's cheaper to maintain, stock spare parts, certifying software and accessory hardware, etc.

The economic theory of dead chickens ..
Current economic theory could well substitute for some primitive magical cult. Hence such monstrosities such as the Black–Scholes model (a rehashed nuclear physics formula). The magic formula that caused the global economic meltdown. You might as well wave a dead chicken at your Quotron/Bloomberg terminal.

It'd just be a thinner laptop. The LCD dictates the size of the device, then to have be protected the bottom with the keyboard needs to be the same size.
The Motorola Atrix already had this, but the software was much more limited that what can be pulled off with Continuum.

Re:Hardware hack help
I have a bluetooth speaker. My phone is paired with it. I can listen to music from my phone or ipad on it via bluetooth. However, due to an accident, the input jack on the speaker (headphone size) is broken, so I am ONLY able to listen to music by pairing it.
Open it up and solder on a new one. If necessary, chop up one of these and solder it on (if the board is too damaged to simply put on a new jack). It's not exactly a hack, more of a mere repair, but it seems to me that if you aren't in a position to repair it, you aren't in a position to hack it either.

They fear us, that's why the NSA and the TPP are trying to lock down everything, they are trying to strip us of our rights and control us and the information channels we communicate on because they are at their weakest.

The (mass surveillance) by the NSA/others and abuse by law enforcement is just more part and parcel of state suppression of dissent against corporate interests. They're worried that the more people are going to wake up and corporate centers like the US and canada may be among those who also awaken. Remember to use gold plated connectors to get the best visual fidelity.
I've been getting 8K resolution for years just by jamming my Denon Link Cable directly into my eye socket to interface with the optic nerve. It only hurt the first few times.

Re: Gun-free zone?
Push guns underground, and they become much more expensive and risky to buy. Why not just divert all the money and resources in the "war on drugs" into the "war on guns", and it'd be won inside a decade, I reckon.
It won't, really. Guns are actually easier / less dangerous to make than most drugs (that require labs to produce, or farms to grow, or both).
Here is a shotgun that can be made out of two pieces of pipe and a screw, readily available in any hardware store, not requiring any machining skills and minimal assembly. It's single-shot, but it's so cheap to make that a spree killer could easily make a dozen or two, preload them, and just use and discard them one by one.
Here is a book detailing how to make a fully automatic 9mm submachine gun at home, with no machining, out of pipes and other stuff also readily available from any hardware store. Its only deficiency compared to the "real thing" is that it has a smooth bore, not rifled - which will not matter in the least if used at distances under 50 yards or so, or against a crowd. We know that it works because the author has sufficiently made and tested one - and ended up in prison for it, being a UK citizen.
The only thing that can be realistically regulated is ammo. Even then you're looking at modern smokeless powder rounds with primers - cases can be reloaded, and bullets can be cast, and smokeless powder can be made, but primers are complicated. OTOH, black powder cap and ball revolvers are much more low-tech, and yet still quite deadly.

The real history of imperial conquest by commerce:

"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil intersts in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested." [p. 10]
"War is a racket.

Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations." [p. 24]
General Butler is especially trenchant when he looks at post-war casualties. He writes with great emotion about the thousands of tramautized soldiers, many of who lose their minds and are penned like animals until they die, and he notes that in his time, returning veterans are three times more likely to die prematurely than those who stayed home."

Re:Nope
In boating circles, there is an unofficial 'law of displacement' - the bigger boat gets the right of way. Even if the rules of the road state otherwise. This stems from physics. Large vessels do not maneuver or slow down as fast as smaller ones and they do cause more damage to the little boat. The various maritime legal authorities have never sought to codify this, but it's well known, considered a rule of law (if you value your life) and is even written up in classic texts like Chapman's.

Re:Dear Amazon
Check out amazon family library aka The Amazon Household Program.
"Family Library lets you share Kindle books, apps and games, audiobooks, Kindle Owners' Lending Library benefits, and Prime Instant Video streaming across your Amazon devices and Kindle reading apps after linking your Amazon account to that of another adult in your household. Each adult chooses what they want to share: they can share all of their Kindle books, apps, and audiobooks, or they can choose to only share individual titles." -

"Fake capitalism"
I don't think you know much about capitalism's real history in the US.
"The following quotations from the book are intended to summarize it:
"I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil intersts in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. Re:DO NOT WANT
Wow are you REALLY this dumb, or are you just a console tard? Lets see 1.- Tigerdirect is one of the largest e-tailers in North America, 2.- There are vids of 6 year olds putting together PCs, fuck they come with instructions that use pictures so you don't even need to be able to read (should be great for you) 3.- Windows 10 IS FREE, just type "Windows 10 for free" and you can get the Insider version for a whole $0, and are you really too fucking dumb to know how to fill out a fucking envelope and mail in your receipt, really?
BTW if you are dumber than the 6 year old or so fat you can't actually see your wee-wee and therefor are incapable of bending over to use a screwdriver? You can pick up an A-10 APU PC for $479 and the upgrades you to a TB drive and gives you Windows 8.1. All you have to do is flip the switch...think you are capable of that, or do you need to have somebody draw you a picture?

Re:Avoid the Microsoft tax!
Want Android? Pay M$.
Wrong. Head over here and grab Android, no payment necessary to anybody.
Want Apple? You're probably paying M$.
Wrong again.
Want a PC? Unless you build it yourself, you're paying M$.
Nope. Still wrong. Even from the biggest vendors you can buy Linux laptops and there are plenty of ChromeOS-based systems from laptops to desktops. Even if you buy a PC pre-loaded with Windows you can contact the manufacturer for a refund of the license cost.
Even if you don't, they're still controlling the hardware specs.
No. No they aren't.
This is extortion and monopolization at its finest.
No it isnt extortion and certainly in today's realm of personal computing that includes everything from smartphones to tablets to PCs Microsoft does not have a monopoly by any definition. There are a wealth of personal computing options: Windows, various Linux distros, OSX, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, FirefoxOS, ChromeOS, etc.
Meanwhile, my blood ran cold when I read this knowing that LadyAda sold out. I guess she needed the money. So much for Adafruit.
Nobody "sold out", you're just upset at choice and competition. Competition is a good thing, we have it in personal computing and we should have it in the embedded space too. If you don't like Windows on embedded devices then by all means choose Linux instead, nobody is stopping you.

define "gifted"
I find myself objecting to the word "gifted" as applied to students (or anyone). It seems to me the level of skill has less to do with the innate genetic makeup or god-given gifts than the advantages of the learning environment.
I didn't always feel this way: My daughter went to Montessori school and was always in the advanced or gifted programs in Public High School. I'm now convinced that she acquired these "gifts" as a result of hard work, great teachers, and good parental coaching and encouragement.
I also think the researcher had an agenda, but I think the main problem stems from two false premises:
First, I think it is false that you can manufacture "educated" citizens in the same way as you manufacture consumer goods. I suspect the whole concept of "Public" Education" is fundamentally flawed. http://www.amazon.com/Undergro...
Second, I think the assumption that a disparity in numbers between races or cultures in the USA reflects deliberate racism is flawed.
I also disagree strongly with many current arguments on "egalitarianism" and the war on "social differences," but that is obviously a discussion too big for a
/. forum. -
Re:The algorithm isn't clever, but scales well.
So don't compare only 2 DNA strings at once, or you can compromise and get good imperfect results. Every time you discover a matching sequence, you can leverage the information you have gained from earlier comparisons. DASH: Searching Compressed DNA (disclosure; A friend's PHD thesis).

Why spend money to keep an old computer relevant?
Just do what I do, get one of these, and use monitors with at least three inputs. There's actually quite a few that do DVI, HDMI, and either Mini DisplayPort or VGA.
But oh noes, you'll have to change the monitor inputs individually. No KVM is going to let you swap them independently of the keyboard/mouse, at least not one that costs less than a whole computer, which poses the question - why are you fetishizing your laptop? What can you possibly run on it that won't run on the desktop PCs? And if it is so important, why not give it a dedicated monitor?

Re:Why wireless charging?
I use this on my phone. It is nice as my phone has dust/water plugs in all the jack slots which are pretty flimsy. I also can simply drop the phone into the charger and not worry about plugging and unplugging cables. The ports also wear over time, wireless charging receivers don't. It is also nice in the car as I just drop it into a holder which keeps it in a decent spot for navigation and charges automatically.

It is nice to have a water resistant phone and not have to worry about getting wet in the rain or falling into a pool, or whatever might ruin other phones.
