Hackers
This book has some great stories of the days when solo programmers reigned: http://www.amazon.com/Hackers-... It still blows me away that some of my favorite games from Sierra, etc were designed and coded by one person (art and all) while today you can't make a video game without a team of hundreds.

Check out this amazon review of the fire tv version of twitch:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/custo...There is no search which is odd considering twitch is owned by amazon.
Why cripple your own app? It works fine on the roku and roku Doesn't own twitch.
Please prove me wrong.
Seriously I would like to be able to search twitch on my fire tv.

Serious IT Shops
The Oakland PD has a serious IT shop. They don't buy just any namby-pamby parts for their XP server farm. They spent top dollar on Denon cables and that power strip WITH surge protection. The system is securely stored in the overhead credenza of the sys admin's desk.

Re:Wired is a left-wing rag
Actually Wired is and always has been a rightist libertarian rag with tragic typography. There was even a good book written partly about it years ago Amazon Link which ripped to shreds the cyber selfish Randian ideology that has turned the tech industry into an object of derision. From revolutionising the world with software to photo-sharing tards whose idea of visionary is a taxi app tech isn't the bounteous future most of us were promised by the nerd Gods.

Re:Lovely summary.
Every. Single. Thing by this guy I've tried to read is terrible. I love the whole "pew pew in space genre", I'm a complete sucker for it and I find his stuff utterly unreadable. Yet he got 3 noms in one category. Totally massively political.

pew pew in space eh ?
Well if you are going to lie, at least try to do a better job.
I'll just note your reversing yourself on
No, it was because the stories submitted were utter shite
And if you would like to argue with Landis about the politics of Weiskopf he posted in the thread.

What is that?
I read the summary twice and still am not entirely sure what it's saying. To the submitter, theodp, Please, please, get this book and read it. It can only do you good.

You link to articles written by people ignorant as yourself.
These are stun guns, civilians can own them: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb...

These are tasers, that only police can have. They sometimes kill people.

They don't need to. The candidates (and viewers) all know the answers to those questions because they've read the manual. You don't know the answers because you are just a muddle headed liberal. You probably believe in science.

Re:Input output
So many people want excuses (it's my genes, it's my metabolism, I'm big boned, blah blah fucking blah). For the VAST majority of people, it's simple, they consume more calories than they burn.... period.
FALSE.
Since you obviously haven't done any reading on the subject based on actual research, take a look at Why We Get Fat for an overview on research that has been done since the fucking 1800s on insulin response and fat storage. He backs it up with a nice bibliography, and has the more expansive Good Calories, Bad Calories if you're into that sort of thing (I am).
Insulin plays a role in how we utilize calories. Low-GI diets, Atkins, and to an extent Paleo (though not by design), and others rely on this to get results. Cut flour, sugar, and other starches like potatoes and there's your start. It's not hard, it's just that most people are undisciplined dumbasses. They want that cola, Starbucks Caramel Macchiato, Olive Garden pasta, french fries and other bullshit, all while screwing up their insulin response. You do NOT have to go hungry to lose weight; the wife and I have been on ketogenic diets on and off for years and it works like a charm. I once dropped sixty pounds and she dropped 40 pounds and we're in our mid-40s and are within 10 pounds of our what we consider to be ideal weights (I'm 5'10" and 195 and lift; she's 5'4" and 125 and runs). My cholesterol is a couple of points high; hers is actually slightly low, triglycerides normal in both of us. She's a librarian and I'm a software engineer, and we both sit on our asses most of the day. A coworker was on a doctor regulated low-carb diet, and she lost 260 pounds. After her insulin response started to return to normal she lost various cravings, although that took awhile. Spend 30 years fucking up your metabolism and it's not going to snap back overnight.
Poliquin's site offers a nice overview right here.
Go to the steakhouse and get a huge piece of meat and a steamed side vegetable and you'll be fine. Go to IHOP and order pancakes, not so much. Tip: if you want alcohol, plain, high quality Vodka (though certain whiskeys are okay too) is your go-to booze; just be careful what you mix it with.

Re: Yes - known for years.
For my needs a Macbook Pro 13 Retina is pretty near perfect. I haven't found anything from any other manufacturer which even comes close, no matter how much I am prepared to pay.
Look harder next time.
43% less than the Mac for the same basic configuration, same weight and size, plus a touch screen.
-
Re: Yes - known for years.
Are there other cases where there is no Mac which fits? Definitely. But for business use, coding and graphical work there tends to be a Mac for everyone.
If you don't care about price, you're generally right.
A 13" MacBook Pro starts at $1,300 for a dual core CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of SSD space.
That is insanely expensive for such a basic machine. If you like yours, by all means, enjoy... Just don't kid yourself, it is a massively overpriced machine with fancy packaging.
Example:
ASUS Zenbook:
http://www.amazon.com/Zenbook-...
Core i5, 8GB, 256GB SSD, 1080p IPS touchscreen, etc.
That is very similar to the $1499 MacBook Pro in terms of features. Slightly lower screen res (but at 13", it is plenty), but it is touchscreen (the Mac isn't).
Price is $850, just over HALF the price of the Mac. Same weight (slightly less actually)
If you like your Mac, fine. Just don't kid yourself, you paid nearly double what you had to pay for the same machine from someone else.
-
Re:Yes - known for years.
If you are in this market, Apple has nothing to offer you, and it appears that they like it that way.
I could well be wrong, but I think Apple is leaving a LOT of money on the table by not offering a decent desktop choice. Likewise, they don't offer a reasonable laptop choice either, thinking their iPad fills that segment (it doesn't, but they probably think it does).
I just ordered another notebook, this time an ASUS:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...
For $349, you get:
Intel Core i3-5010U 2.1GHz
4GB RAM
500GB 5400RPM
DL DVD±RW/CD-RW
WiFi 802.11ac
2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 2.0, 1 x HDMI and VGA ports
15.6" Full HD (1920*1080)
Windows 10Is it the best built notebook? No. Does It weight the least? No.
For pete's sake, it is $350 bucks! Who fracking cares! That is a lot of computer for the money, Apple's MacBook might be nice, but it is more than triple the price.

Re:Misdirection
There was no mention of salaries, benefits, much less anything specific to particular fields, not even "IT."
You've got the correct conclusion, but incorrect facts. Here's the full study. They do in fact separate out computer, engineering, and mathematics jobs, and they do compare wages, and do correctly conclude that wages are up. But,
1) How high would wages be without H1-B competition? Sure, "real annual wages (2015$) in engineering, architectural, computer, and mathematical occupations" is up by a whopping $3000 from 2001 to 2015...during a time when tech companies are stashing billions.
2) They're doing the same stupid thing everyone does with "the unemployment rate." Pretend I'm an engineer who gets replaced by a an H1-B. While I'm looking for an engineering job, I'm an "unemployed engineer" and show up in the unemployment rate for engineers statistics. If I take a job flipping burgs at McD's in order to not starve to death, I'm no longer an unemployed engineer. I'm an employed fast-food worker, and do not show up on the unemployment statistics. So in this way, yes, employment of H1-Bs can rise, while the unemployment rate for engineers does not budge.
Somebody read How to Lie With Statistics and used it for evil instead of good.

Re:Still kind of expensive
To take an example straight off the page I linked:
http://smile.amazon.com/BLU-Da...$50 at current price, $60 list. That's new, in stock. What do we get for that?
Android 4.4 KitKat (not Jellybean; I don't know what the update story is though)
4GB of storage (not 512MB; still a bit low but adequate and good for the price. Expandable via microSD, of which Amazon will sell you 16GB for $6)
512MB of RAM (are you not clear on the difference between RAM and persistent storage? A little low but fairly typical for low-end devices)
Dual-core 1GHz CPU (decidedly low for a modern phone, but only because our standards are so high; quite suitable for a cheap device)
Dual-SIM with tri-band HSPA+ (up to 42Mbps, sometimes called 4G)
Front-facing camera and LED flash for rear camera (features often omitted from the cheapest of phones)You are full of shit. GTFO, troll.
-
Still kind of expensive
There are lots of people in Africa who can afford an $88 smartphone, but that doesn't make it a cheap smartphone. You can find brand new Android and Windows Phone devices for under $60 right here in the US. The Android devices probably don't have too great of an update story, but that's an OEM problem and one that Google can obviously avoid. It seems like Google could easily make a device that costs less than $80, and when you're targeting the developing world, I feel like it would be a lot easier to sell a smartphone costing nearly $50 than nearly $90!

Re:Dell Latitude Ultrabook
I use a Dell Latitude 7440 and absolutely love it. i7, 16GB RAM, 256 SSD, 14" 1080p, backlit keyboard, great battery life with Win 7. There's no way I would pay double for a Mac with similar specs.
You're right - there's no way you'd pay double for a Mac with similar specs. Let's compare the baseline models, for example - even though the Mac has twice the RAM and twice the SSD space, as well as a faster processor. Oh, and by the way it appears the 7440 has a low-end 1366x768 display, not 1080P like you stated...
Dell Latitude E7440 w/ 2.0GHz i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 14" screen - $1202.55 (after $687 "instant savings")
Retina MacBook Pro w/ 2.7GHz i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13" screen - $1299.00Bumping the MacBook Pro up to 3.1GHz i7, 16GB RAM raises the price to $1799. Unfortunately the Dell page doesn't seem to let me configure the E7440 with options you've listed, so I can't give you their quoted price for the upgrade - but I doubt they're selling it for $400 less than the barebones version, which would have to be the case for your statement to be true.
I did find one on Amazon that was spec'ed more like what you say - except it still has that 1366x768 display, and doesn't have a backlit keyboard. Even that is selling for $1500.

Re:AAPL is heading for a catastrophe
Here ya go, the BLU Studio Mini LTE. Its $100 for a quad core with a GB of RAM and Android KitKat (comes with Jellybean but KitKat is ready for download when you fire it up) and if you want a bigger screen they have a 6 inch for $132 but as you can see they have all price points and both Windows and Android.
I've had the BLU Studio Mini LTE for about 3 months now and I love it, its fast and responsive, gets decent battery life, has a nice clear screen, comes with a rubberized case and screen protector, all in all its a really solid phone for $100 and since it supports so many carriers if I get tired of Ting? I can just pop in a new sim and go somewhere else.

Re:As much as possible
Tell me can you still get batteries for your 7 year old MBP?
That *was* a good question, but for giggles, I did a quickie search for a battery that fits a 2007 MBP on Amazon, and no problem - this is one of 211 results. It popped up almost instantly. It was one of like 98 results.
But let's really have fun here and pull one up for a Powerbook G4 - they stopped making those 10 years ago...

Abuse or incompetence? Other examples.
It's not necessary to read all the articles above to know that Amazon is an abusive or incompetent company. There is abuse on many Amazon web pages. For example, see the web page for this book: Against Football: One Fan's Reluctant Manifesto.
That page shows a little information and then pushes visitors to buy other books. My opinion: Either Amazon is extremely abusive, or extremely incompetent.
There are plenty of other examples. Amazon allows sellers to abuse customers. Some items list low prices that attract visitors, but the shipping charge is extremely high.
There are more than 5,000 comments on the New York Times article: Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace -
Re:This can only be solved by...
This was already predicted in the 80's by Norm Augustine.
Augustine's Law Number XVI: In the year 2054, the entire defense budget will purchase just one aircraft. This aircraft will have to be shared by the Air Force and Navy 3-1/2 days each per week except for leap year, when it will be made available to the Marines for the extra day.

Re: Is systemd involved at all?
I've never have suspend or hibernation issues while running Windows based OS
Then you've been lucky. Since the 90's, I've had plenty of computers go into "Coma Mode" where they refused to wake up from sleep in Windows. Even now, the most I do is let the computer suspend the display, and there's some modern monitors that shit their pants when the computer tries to put them to sleep regardless of the OS. My current monitor takes about 5-10 seconds to wake up, works fine for a couple of seconds, then freezes the display for a couple of seconds then starts working normally. I was looking at buying this monitor but the reports of having it flip repeatedly through all the inputs instead of just going to sleep like it should is a dealbreaker. Especially since if you turn it off, when you turn it back on it apparently takes several seconds to boot up followed by several seconds of logo bullshit.
I believe Microsoft-compatible product and driver certification fixed a lot of the shit out there. If Linux had a powerhouse that could bend the hardware behemoths to their will similarly, it wouldn't be having this problem now.
-
Re: What problem?
Public domain just means anyone can use it for free. If you can get some sap to pay money for something that's free, good on you.
Its a bit more than that. You can actually tweak a Public Doman source an eensy bit, and copyright the result. This is what is behind the new classic literature mashup genre (eg: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies).

Hell BLU has a nice Windows phone for $54 now and it comes with a 5MP camera with flash and MicroSD support up to 32Gb. They also have an Android with JB and 5MP with flash for $58 and I seriously doubt they are losing money on each sale so I really don't see the big whoop.
If it works as well as my BLU $100 Studio Mini they are sweet phones as mine has been rock solid stable, takes great pics, gets good battery life, easy to root (took 3 minutes using SuperRoot), just really nice phones.

Re:Slavery 2.0 Rocks!!!
No, this happened before. They called it Enron, and exactly the same corporate attitude about 'culling everybody all the time' to force all the workers to work like rabid weasels was in place. There was even a movie about it which is quite good. "Enron- The Smartest Guys In The Room"
Youtube appears to be trying to sell it outright, so no link, but I'm sure you can find it (I actually own it on DVD, that's how good it was)
I could give you an Amazon link?
;) http://www.amazon.com/Enron-Th... $8.14 for the DVD.This is sort of what you get with Googles and Amazons and such barging around. I can instantly give you that video for $8.14, but everybody now has to play by their rules to keep up. You can't do another 'marketplace' or 'internet' that's nicer to work at, the crazy people will just eat you for lunch, so it's increasingly impossible to work at all unless you want to work in this kind of way.
Anyway, Enron existed and was just like that and held all California for ransom because they could, it was an arbitrage opportunity. Once arbitrage opportunities come up for Amazon, they'll not only seize them but seize them harder and faster than anybody else because that's the culture. Look at the recent big Amazon Prime Day. That's what you get but only after they kill everything else that can do what they do.

external battery works for me
I find it easier to just buy some decent phone, using whatever criteria you want to shop for on the phone side (price, features, etc.), and then if you want extra battery life, buy an external battery that can charge the phone via USB. They're small/light enough these days that I just keep one in my laptop bag, which I usually have with me. If you're more the outdoor/hiking type, you can get a version that doubles as an LED flashlight. Lets me go about 2x as long without having the kind of big/fat phone you'd need for a big internal battery.

Re:Paradox of choice
as to some people not being able to handle malware... I'm going to refer back to the "don't shit in your drinking water" point I made above. There are believe it or not people that don't know that still. Those epidemics you see in africa are frequently caused by contaminated drinking water and that's typically because they let their live stock bath in it or they bath in it or they wash their clothes in it.
This is something that was bypassed like...6000 years ago. A stepped fountain does a very good job of dealing with the problem. You have a top level that is for drinking water only. You have a step below that is for human bathing/washing clothing/etc, then the third step is for animals etc.
Its not perfect but if you see what people are doing in many places in the world... you have to conclude they have it coming when the viral/bacterial outbreak happens. I mean... you were fucking warned.
This is the 21st century. I live in the First world... I consider malware management etc to be akin to not pissing in your drinking water. If you do... then I'm going to have a very very hard time feeling anything but disgust.
As to gamepads with android... bluetooth gamepads or OTG cables are how I do that when I am so inclined. There are a lot of specialized bluetooth controllers that are designed to hold an iphone or android phone. You click them into the gamepad and there is a joystick on the left and some buttons on the right... and often some triggers.
Example:
http://www.amazon.com/MOGA-Mob...http://www.amazon.com/Megadrea...
Loads of them. I personally use an OTG cable and a USB gamepad I've had for ages because... 1 dollar is what the OTG cable cost and I had a game pad I could use with my phone.

Re:Already propagating
It's actually pretty easy once you get used to it. Just get a food scale, like this one (which I own and like a lot):
http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart...
With that in hand, just measure what you consume, and stick to the serving amounts on the package. Do this religiously for at least 3 months, and you get a pretty good idea of what you're doing.
As far as keeping track, either use a calorie tracking site (e.g. myfitnesspal.com) or just keep a meal-based note in your head. I'll do something like 250 calories for breakfast (trust me, meat for breakfast sates your hunger MUCH longer than cereal or any grain) 600 for lunch, adding the calories for one or two snacks between lunch and dinner, and then I can have a big meal for dinner if I didn't eat much earlier in the day, usually dining late enough for bed that I don't get hungry just as I go to bed.
Avoid carb based snacks which aren't very filling. For example, if you like chips, put lots of cottage cheese on them (and make sure to count both chips and cottage cheese when you add it up.) Jerky and pork rinds are very good for keeping you sated, and contrary to popular belief, they don't cause heart disease. Spicy snacks help you stay even fuller for longer, and with fewer calories.
