Where will the online services get their data?
The free online "white pages" services have usually obtained their data by scanning phone books. Where will they get their data now?
Since Feist vs. Rural Telephone, it's been settled law in the US that the listings in telephone directories are not copyrightable. There's no originality. This created the third-party directory industry. But for online directories, there are EULAs and rate limiting on queries. There's no way to do a bulk download. "Whitepages.com" has these terms: "Among other limitations, you may not:
... compile the Results Data in a database and store such data for any future use ... publish, transit, distribute, or resell any Results Data." AnyWho (run by AT&T) has the terms: "You agree that you will not use the Service or the information obtained through the Service ... for incorporation into a commercial product or service ... to download directory listings or other information by using any type of automated means ...".So another data source that used to be open is now closed.

Re:Where's the security protocol?
The whole thing smells fishy: the indictment's first odd bit is its vagueness about what Duchak was up to, specifically. No details.
The second weird thing is that DOJ doesn't want him held - no bail mentioned (nor in any newstory that I've found), and the "will not seek detention" box is checked on the indictment form (pre-trial detention.)
Likewise, the indictment says "five days or less" for the trial duration. I once sat for a sexual assault trial, and despite being an open-and-shut case of guy-grabs-coworkers-boobs-in-front-of-witnesses, it lasted 4-1/2 days.
Three federal agents are listed, you can bet their affidavits spell out more of what he did... and they don't appear to be online. Further searching, looks like there's absolutely nothing within
.gov that bears our Duchak's name.Under other circumstances (and administrations), this might have been a highly-touted smackdown in the war against whatever. Not so here...
But hey! There's a Douglas James Duchak listed in the whitepages
...Let's see if he can fill us in...

Re:A reverse lookup phone book is much harder to f
Not all databases are indexed by google. Have you gone through any effort to mark your phone number as unlisted? I'ld say post it here...but that would probably be a bad idea; unless you want to find out if a phone number can get

Re:SCO Executive Addresses
Well, I live in Utah and I think the addresses are legit. Looking at the map, McBride's house would be less than a mile from my Uncle who is a surgeon and lives in an extremely rich neighborhood. And considering he's close to I-215, that wouldn't be a very long commute to Lindon.
Also, Sontag's address is also in a very nice neighborhood. I grew up in Sandy and looking at a map it looks like he lives in Pepperwood, which is also a very rich neighborhood, and is even a gated community protected with security guards. (It's less than a mile from where I grew up.)
I also work across the street from SCO (for a non-Canopy company) and my guess is that the commute for McBride is about the same as for Sontag. Considering McBride lives right next to the freeway and Sontag is about 10 minutes away (from the freeway) I bet their commute is the same.
Incidentally, you can find the addresses on AnyWho.com:
Darl McBride

Anyone in the Utah area should try to give Mr. McBridge a visit. His address is here. According to MapQuest, the address appears to be in some really dense suburban area. Not what I had imagined some fancy lawyer. Though, according to Yahoo! Financials, a Mr. Darl C. McBride is also the president of SCO. I wonder what is his middle name? Any Linux Users that live on Vintage Oak Lane, or close to his house?

Re:Not so bad.
Annatar gloats:
"My dad happens to be a garbage man and often brings along an occasional system he's scavanged from the dumpsters along his route. Currently I have in my possession an old IBM Aptiva with some guys bank account information on it (He did his checking and stuff with it apparently), but worst of all I have what appears to be an old Gateway tower used to store Medical information for a major hospital in the area my father works. I have over 2 gigs of peoples medical history, including what they were put in the hospital for, insurance information, release dates ect. I should really do the honost thing and reformat it but its always fun to flip the thing on and just page through stuff."
I'm amused that you attend a Christian school, Ben. Fitting, not really surprising. Do you realize that you're sifting through real human beings extremely personal information for your own personal enjoyment? You got into college so I have to assume you're at least bright enough to theoretically know what you're doing is wrong.
So ...Ben Krygsheld, given your hometown and your extremely unique last name, how difficult do you think it would be for me to find out who your dad is, where he works, then determine the hospitals for which his employer provides service, inform them of this factoid, and let all higgeldy-piggeldy bust loose?
Hiring a good admin:

Telling the world on Shashdot that you engage in criminal activity and implicating your father in the process...
Priceless.
You are going to have a very interesting week, genius. Nevermind that this page will be in Google's archive -- complete with your full name attached to it -- in a matter of days. -

Andreas' ad hominem attacks avoid DEP's questionsDisclosure: I'm a Gnome programmer who likes both Gnome and KDE.
Andreas Pour's response just says that he's not going to speak to DEP because he's not fond of the things that DEP has written.
His response to the Kompany's Shawn Gordon dismisses everything as, "a non-issue and just part of some mud-slinging campaign."
"ad hominem" simply means attacking the person making the argument, rather than the argument, itself. IMO this is what Andreas is doing, which is a shame because the argument itself needs answering, namely:
The KDE League's web site was down, it hadn't filed its Deleware paperwork as an organization, and it hasn't made any press releases since its launch in 2000. If the KDE League is still in business, what is it doing other than collecting quarterly $500 or $2,500 checks from its ten members?
There's no doubt that Andreas is the person who should answer this question: he's the chairman of the KDE League, he's listed in the KDE Promotion FAQ as the KDE League's point of contact, and, for crying out loud, a reverse lookup on the phone number in kdeleague.org's whois address gives Andreas' phone number in an apartment complex.
Which brings my two questions:
If the KDE League is really just Andreas, is he just pocketing these members' checks, or is it being fed back to KDE Developers?
If there really are other members, why on Earth are they letting him destroy the League's credibility this way?
The only reason I can think of for the KDE League to not answer is if it's done nothing since its inception.
The only reason I can think of for other League members to stay quiet is that either there aren't any, or that they know the jig is up and would rather let Andreas take the heat.

Re:It's a HOAX!
I really doubt its a hoax. What I say below is true.
I called the number, someone answered.
I told him I was calling about the SmartVehicle, and he said "We are closed today". I said, "OK, I can call back Monday." He said "Thank you, goodbye"
According to this, the name listed for the phone number is:
Chen, Phon Keng
5330 Wickershire Dr NW
Hmm, broken English may not be that surprising. -
Are you sure? If so, start these wheels turning
And you're sure that this was fraud and not some sort of freak accident, seller-in-the-hospital sort of thing? There has been many posts here on how to nail the seller, but I guess I would ask how you're sure? In the same situation, I'd try every possible avenue to have voice contact with the offending party. Emails & email adresses are often broken/changed/or misunderstood.
Then, assuming due diligence,
http://crs.ebay.com/aw-cgi/ebayisapi.dll?crsstar tp age
That's eBay's fraud report form.
I had a problem of a seller not shipping and did the same sort of backtracking to find other victims. After using eBay's seller info and some Anywho research, I was able to track down the seller directly. Faced with that information and the prospect of group action, I got the seller to finally provide what they had sold. The key was just starting the "machinery" promptly and as completely as possible. YMMV -
Re:A real issue
This is a real issue. I'm amazed what I can find about people on the Web already. Correlating bits of innocent data can give you a surprisingly complete picture.
This is very true. To give a practical example, I looked up this young man and this gentleman and found that they shared the same address! Imagine what inferences someone could draw from that.
The Internet brings a whole new level of accessibility to public records - the ability to mine data using scripts and correlate it in a huge database adds a lot of value to information that used to be isolated.
Personally I've spent a year trying to exterminate my personal information from the Net, and I'm far from succeeding.
