The experiment might have worked with some kind of Ni-Cad powered analogue bricks in 2000-2001. Maybe.
And pardon my lack of physics knowledge... but wouldn't the radiation have to be ionising for this to work? -

Re:It's a GAME!!!
Oi, that joke is old, tired, and stolen from Scott Kurtz.
Well, either Scott Kurtz stole it from Scott Sharkey (of 'The Comic', which the internet has forgotten) or he came up with the same idea independantly. If the latter, is it so unreasonable to think others have done so as well?
As far as 'The Comic' goes, all that appears to remain of it is it's index on the Internet Archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/19991003123553/http://w ww.verge-rpg.com/thecomic/
Well, that and the archive on my HDD.

Yes. Do. Right now. If you haven't seen this, and if you still believe a damn thing either George Bush, Michael Moore or Osama bin Laden have to say about The War Against Terror, download this, watch it, be enlightened. Learn why they want you afraid, and how little reason there actually is to be frightened.
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. Since this is now an oldish discussion, posting three links to ~200MB files on
/. is probably not as terrible an idea as it initially sounds :) -

Much better drives means lower failure rates
The Internet Archive Project http://www.archive.org/ is running on the PetaBox http://petabox.com/ rack system, which was commercialized by Capricorn Tech http://www.capricorn-tech.com/ more than a year ago.
This system uses absolutely no board/controller lever redundancy, instead they use a separate file system on every disk, then mirror pairs of 1U units, and finally mirror the entire (mirrored) rack to a geographically distant location.
I am currently testing a much denser solution, the SATABeast http://nexsan.com/products/products/satabeast/sata beast.html from nexsan http://nexsan.com/ which manages to pack 42 500 GB SATA drives into a single 4U rackmount box. With multiple RAID5 volumes and shared hot spare drives, this results in about 17-18 TB of usable file system space.
According to the nexsan engineer I spoke with today, they do so much burn-in testing of the Hitachi Deskstar drives they ship, that over the 15-18 month period they've used these drives, the total error rate has been just 0.4%.
Even if these numbers are somewhat skewed due to many systems (i.e. drives) being relatively recently installed, it is still very impressive.
For our setup we plan to use multiple full boxes, each connected to a separate NFS server. Each server has multiple FC host adapters, so if a server crashes, the corresponding box can be connected to one of the other servers.
We will also use rsync to mirror all data across the country to a secondary site.

He wrote the OS and included apps (including MS BASIC) for the Tandy Model 100, one of the first laptops. Apparently that was the last project he personally did before he just moved into management full time, but it is one of the most efficient and elegant systems ever. It's fantastic.
Some more on Gate's + Allen's original BASIC is preserved here . I recommend finding the Gates interview in Programmers at Work too. Oh hey, there's copy on the same page! Gates is really pretty amazing. I'd rather have Steve Jobs market my project, though...

WoW has diverged from its what caused its success
from http://web.archive.org/web/20021202071205/www.wor
l dofwarcraft.com/wow/faq/ :
How will World of Warcraft differ from other MMORPGs?
World of Warcraft will differ from other MMORPGs in many ways. One of our main goals is to ensure that players can enjoy World of Warcraft without having to invest huge amounts of playtime. Players will be able to complete quests and experience the world at their own pace-whether it be a few hours here and there, or week-long adventuring marathons. Additionally, our quest system will provide an enormous variety of captivating quests with story elements, dynamic events, and flexible reward systems. World of Warcraft will also feature a faster style of play, with less downtime and an emphasis on combat and tactics against multiple opponents. We also plan to incorporate several unique features, which we'll disclose throughout the course of development.
Once a character reaches 60, the only playstyles are to raid or grind. At 60 you can play at your own pace, so long as that pace matches that of at least 20 other people. Story elements and dynamic events are cool, but at 60 there are fewer and fewer quests that take longer to complete and are accessible to fewer people. Fighting a huge raid boss doesn't involve much tactics against multiple opponents. And to boot, the raid itemization progression (aka mudflation) has totally thrown off PvP balance between those who raid and those who do not. -

That's the Spirit!oh, guess i better take the music I'VE made (which is free and legally distributable) out of there too, because i guess I (the owner of said music) have broken the law, too.
That's exactly the conclusion the RIAA wants you to draw. P2P is dirty, they tell you, because so many people use it to steal bread from the mouths of artists children. Because all material is copyright and there's no easy way to tell the publisher's intentions, ALL SHARING MUST INVOLVE SAID "PIRACY". So give up, only the pigopolists can legally distribute music and keep all the bread from ever reaching an artist.
Share music? Why would I want to do that? Next thing you know, I'll be playing it to my friends and singing it without permission. Dirty me.
That old story is so over:
Go to concerts, buy music and share it. As you have noticed, not everyone is a pig and there's more than enough to go around without choke points in Holywood. I don't have to give my money to a pig when I could give it to an artist.

Dare I say that free content is making warez redundant, even second rate? Free software works better than commercial software. Free media, such as can be found at places like the internet archive or http://magnatune.com/">Magnatune is better than RIAA/MPAA crap. Give your money and mind share to those who deserve it!
Allow me to pimp the Radiators, one of the best jam bands to come out of New Orleans. There are hundreds of hours of their concerts available that you can share with your friends without charge or greed.

no jokes, but how about some trucker songs?
When most people think of trucker songs, they think of the ones recorded by Red Sovine. Dale Watson has a few good ones too. Here are a couple:
Truckin' Man
If I was a Truckin' Man, I'd be a gearjammer with a one-armed tan,
I'd spend my nights in the roadhouse, Days on the lost highway,
Hey, If I was a Truckin' Man, I'd have my radio screamin' on the A.M. band
All night drivin' by dashboard lights, If I was a Truckin' Man
I can't let my life slip away,
pushing these Number 2 pencils every day
This rat race don't fit into my plan, no, ma'am
I'm a'dreamin', schemin', If I was a Trucking Man,
(Chorus)
Well I'd sign my life away on the dotted white line,
Drinkin' my coffee, Smokin' my smokes all night
And if I get tired, I'll let Vinnie drive, if he can,
I'm a'dreamin', schemin', If I was a Trucking Man,
This one is kinda funny:
Truckin' Queen
If you ever get up to Oklahoma City
You'll here about a guy that thinks he's pretty
On channel 19 in year your ears
He's a long haul trucker, he's big and brawny
You can hear that sucker nearly every morning
Loud and proud, loud and clear
I got my night gown on
I got my pretty red panties on
and I'm ready to go in a minute
Trucking queen from OKC
He wears a negligee with red lame
He's always heard, but he's seldom seen
He's a trucking queen from OKC
He's got a string of white pearls around his big red neck
Scruffy beard and the hair on his back makes the negligee stick out kinda lumpy like
He ain't got no hair on the top of his head
But he's got a pony tail with a blue barrette
He wears pink lipstick
It gets smeared on his power mike
(Chorus) -

Why I Hate the ACLU
It's really very simple. The ACLU did actually take a stand against ECHELON at the time. They setup a website to collect information on ECHELON in August of 1999 - http://www.aclu.org/privacy/spying/15059prs199911
1 6.html
But did they file suit against Clinton? Heck no, Clinton was a Democrat president. The ACLU is a partizan organization and will not go after Clinton.
And now that a very small subset of the eavesdropping that Clinton's Administration instituted with Echelon is being done by a GOP administration ... Well ... it's lawsuit time. The ACLU is about as partizan as you can get.
Don't believe me? They even took down all the info at www.echelonwatch.org because now that the ACLU is sueing the W administration, it must cover up the fact that something MUCH worse was going on in the Clinton Administration. You can still check out the info at www.echelonwatch.org by using the wayback machine at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
So yes, if you tend to be to the left of the aisle, you love the ACLU, but if you are a centrist or lean to the right, the ACLU can be seen for what it really is - The legal arm of the DNC.
I have no doubt I'll be modded down because of the extreme left leanings of /. But it doesn't make this any less true. -
GoredNo, this is clearly a "Stop the power grab". The Bush administration has repeatedly refused to acknowledge that it is bound by the same laws as the rest of us. It has been riding the fear wave since 9/11 to bypass any and all executive accountability in the name of 'national security'.
Al Gore gave a speech two days ago regarding the power grab. It's quite interesting. Although, IMHO, I think that Gore should have done this a long time ago, but maybe he thought that he would be lambasted as a "sore loser" (which is for another discussion, another day).
Back on-topic, I'm pleased to hear that these groups are filing this lawsuit. Since there doesn't appear to be any checks and balances in the US government anymore, somebody has to do it.

Re:David is right, but the road is rocky
Well, you can start by going to the link in my sig, here are all of the bands on there. They, along with other sites like it, are mainly jam bands and the like, however. I live in Atlanta, and I have a friend that plays in a local band in Athens, Full Fathom Five. They have links on that site where you can download their whole cd for free!
