Atari rocks
Everyone rejoices the 30th birthday of Atari, home to such great games as Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em! and E. T. - the Extra Terrestrial.
Thank god I still have my 7800 in working condition.... -

Re:U.S. Govt
Don't worry, if/when some city gets flattened somewhere, the world will be forced to deal with this threat. Perhaps the USA will even declare a "war on asteroids" and spend trillions of dollars on hunting down rogue asteroids. At least we know there is an entire generation of people trained to demolish Asteriods in an efficient manner.

Re:Cell phones & CarsNice site there. But this game is confusing - are you really firing at planes with what looks like a penis?
-
Cell phones & Cars
1.) Cell phones are definitely getting banned in cars now.
Hmm. Let's just forget about a hands-free kit and mount your phone to your front bumper. That - combined with a way to remotely stear the car with the cell phone at the other end - should give you the ultimate Pole Position experience! And on top of that: it's much safer to crash your car when you're not in it! -
Re:Atari Had the Right IdeaYears back the Atari 2600 (and related) system had a button pad for accessing different functions of games.
The keypad on my Atari 5200 was all I ever needed to convince all of my grade-school buddies that my 5200 was infinitely better than any game system they could ever show me.
At least until the Nintendo hit US shores. Ah well.
The funny thing is, despite the fact that my parents ended up having to buy six or eight of those controllers because the trigger buttons on the side kept breaking, the "1" and "Start" buttons had a terrible habit of almost never working, and the joystick wasn't self-centering (and therefore suffered from a lot of abuse at my six-to-eight-year-old hands), I thought it rocked.
And I can still remember which numbers corresponded to which plays in Football. The screen pass was nearly unstoppable

Re:Atari 2600 schematics and details
Yes, we have schematics of the 2600 on our site, you can find them here:
Atari 2600 Schematics - NTSC
Atari 2600 Schematics - PAL
As for details of its construction and roms, there are quite a few knowledgable people who visit our message boards, and they can probably answer any specific questions you have. -

Re:for game modsYou would think that after six years of giving away engine source, not game source, people would finally know the difference by now. Yes, id hasn't released the source code to Quake 3, just recently released the source for Quake 2 but they'll release the source for RtCW. Riiiiiiight...
Also, though I usually don't care what Slashdot posts, how in the hell is this news? I mean, they always give away the source. News should be things like the LOTR Text Adventure for the Atari 2600 that fits in 4K. Not "the sun came up this morning."
You know they're just kicking themselves (again) that they can't delete Slashdot stores for fear of ruining people's posts.

Re:Airworlf for 2600
actually, i don't recall a game called "airwolf" for the atari 2600.
i think the game that you are referring to is called "barnstorming". i believe that airwolf was later released for the NES. -
Re:Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II
Kool Aid Man (year unkown)
Chase the Chuck Wagon (Ralston-Purina)
Games as Adds (like Yo Noid!, which I actually liked... but I've only ever eaten domino's pizza once ever, and Spot, which was mentioned as is totally kickass, even had 4 players on the NES, with 2 controllers. it rocked. Then there's cool spot, it was horrible...).
And there were 2 versions of Tapper, one with Budweiser product Placement (Tapper) and the kids version, Root Beer Tapper (without Budweiser product placement). Tis a damned fun game either way though.
I'm not sure if those 2 are older than Pole Position, but who knows... -

Re:Speaking of AtariActually, for those wanting to use a 2600 but either only have a newer tv without a coax jack on it, or just hate the poor quality you get out of an rf-modulated signal, try this:
http://www.atariage.com/howto/composite.html
The instructions are for a 2600jr, but the steps are pretty much the same for a woodgrain unit. I've done it, and I can tell you, the picture is LOADS better.

Golden Ring or Golden Arches?Check out the other game in the catalog screenshot.
"And for kids of all ages -- there's a fact action game of skill, served up the McDonald's way!" Was it a branded version of "Burger Time," and you got to put together orders on the cook line as customers screamed at you? ROTFLMAO!

Emulator?
At first, I could not get the ROM to work, but after a little work, figured it out. For anyone that might be having difficulty getting it running under Debian, just:
apt-get install stella
then get the "stealla.pro" file from the bottom of the page and copy it to ~/.stella.pro (notice it is renamed to be a hidden dot file). You're then good to go:
xstella LordOfTheRings.bin -
Good lord. A McDonald's video game?
Here's the blurb. Sonic burger-flipping? Attacking with ketchup packets? WTF?

Lord Of The Rings
Here's what I know about the game:
This game was programmed by Parker Bros a long time ago, and was pretty much finished (I'm not sure what (if anything) they left out... it looks finished to me). However, there are two parties that apparently own the rights to the LOTR stuff, and there were problems getting the liscensing rights and other legal mumbo jumbo. As a result, the game couldn't be released because the two sides couldn't come to terms on things.
As for what to do in the game, the other goons at AtariAge and I have figured out this much:
1. You have to get to Rivendell, the city at the top of the map. To do this, you basically run up and to the left. When you find the path, follow it. It's much faster. If you need to look at your map, duck into the forest (or a town) and press the button.
2. You can pick up other party members along the way. I'm not sure exactly where they all are, but one is for sure in the city on the left.
3. The birds don't seem to do anything (we haven't figured that part out yet), and the only way we know of to get the horseman off your back is to dodge into the forest. He won't follow you. As for turning white when you press the button? I have no idea what that does either.
4. Eventually, if you get far enough along the path, you'll come to a river (It's flashing for some reason). There's a bridge across it if you look for it.
By the way, AtariAge is back up... sort of. You can view the LOTR article and associated material, and you can get to the forums... but everything else is offline until their MySQL server is put back online. -

Re:Its down to the hardware.
Fortunately there is a solution. Simply wait a few months. You will be able to download patches from the internet. The built in hard drive will allow these patches to work.
Whoo hoo, this is just what I've been waiting for to make my life complete! After a long day of work fixing Windows problems, I really want to come home to a video game console that has to have service packs downloaded and applied to it!
Thanks, but I think I'll stick with my older systems that just work. I never got a GPF or segfault while playing a frantic game of Kaboom! on my 2600 or Super Mario Brothers on my NES. -
What about Ball Blazer in 1983?!Castle Wolfenstien came out in 1992, Ball Blazer came out in 1983 for the Atari 8bit computer. Ball blazer had the feel and motion of a FPS shooter, but was based more on sports. I couldnt find an original screenshot, but here is one from the atari 5200.
As 3D maps go, Video games such as Bards Tale used 3D type maps for moving around a city. Not true 3D but boxes, but then, these are older games. Even thinking, I think there were some older C64/Apple demos that used Wolf type 3D maps, but I cant think of any at the moment.Wolfenstien 3D wasnt the first, but was the most popular. People were building upto realastic games for quite some time.
Some games I think they forgot about, Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, SkyNet, Blood Series, SIN, Solider of Fortune, KingPin, Shadow Warrior, RedNeck Rampage, and TRIBES! Hell, even new titles like Max Payne and upcoming DN4E are leaps above Q3A.
A real history on FPS games, should include 8bit computers and consoles. I think it would be cool for a list of games, dates, and engines they used. Even a quick blurb on what the developers/programmers were thinking when they came out with the games.Ahh, I'm too old... I remember playing Ball Blazer!
