Re:If the Grand Ayatollah's against it....
About as well as it did the last time..
You see, letters in the hebrew language are also numbers. There is no W so V is used in it's place or in other words, V and W are interchangeable. It so happens that V is also 6 so when you type www, you are typing 666. That's right, every time to go on the World Wide Web, you are paying homage to the beast.
That was the early rallying cry to why the internet was evil and should be removed. Of course some people who actually knew better checked up on those facts and it turns out a little different.
Except that 666 isn't the number of the beast, it's actually 616. Google it, number of sources other then the one I put down.

Re:it always looked to me like...
Since W is double-vee in most languages that use the character wouldn't www == 666666?
Well, actually, the www=666 is more or less a long running joke that has existed in some form or another since the mid 1990's. I probably first ran across it on my windows 3.11 running Netscape 2.something dialing into what became one of the largest local internet services in my area. The Hebrew language is a lot like the roman numeral system in that when you put numbers beside each other, they are added together. 666 would actually be 18, 666666 would be something like 36. There are rules in how it's done but I don't know them well enough to say anything.
Here is a link explaining it a little more. Note that the copyright at the top of the page lists 1999 where the one on the bottom of the page lists 1995. '95 sounds about the right time frame as I may had just upgraded to windows 95.
As for the SCSI being SekSI (sexy), your probably right. I don't remember where I heard that from. I just know I can understand why the Scuzzy sounding name stuck (it's a PITA in some situations)

Re:Georgia will be a safe haven after the Rapture
We don't have the original texts, but if that was a criterion then we would have to discard nearly every manuscript from antiquity.
Oh yeah, and almost every manuscript from antiquity is regarded with a healthy dose of skepticism because of the likelihood of point-modifications by previous copies.
The more politically polarizing the text, the less it is treated as direct reference and the more is assumed about what might have been changed in the process. That's pretty standard anthropology.
But, of course, the KJV bible is the unaltered word of Jeebus.

Re:Even More Shocking
Yep, they would substitute the V for a W or use them interchangeably, it is a common thing to do. There is also a long line of history on this story. Turns out that when you place numbers together, you perform math on them like with roman numerals. In this case it is adding so www (vvv) would be 18 instead of 666.
Back in the early to mid 90's this was a common thing going around the net and religious circles. I don't know who started it or which side it they were on, but several church groups used it to claim the internet was evil and several geeks used to to raz the religious. I think it was more or less a joke with legs.
doing a google search for www is 666, this page comes up and gives a little more info about it. I meant it as a joke too BTW, After all, it was a Christian verses Satanic ubuntu we are in reply to. -
Same old barcode debate
Isn't this essentially just a rehash of the old barcode-as mark of the devil debate? There's an excellent scene in Naked by Mike Leigh about this...
"What is the mark? Well the mark Brian, is the barcode. The ubitiqous barcode that you'll find on every bog roll, and every packet of johnny's and every poxie-pot pie. And every [expletive-removed] barcode is divided into two parts by three markers and those three markers are always represented by the number six. Six-six-six. Now what does it say? No one shall be able to buy or sell without that mark. And now what they're planning to do in order to eradicate all credit card fraud and in order to precipitate a totally cashless society. What they're planning to do; what they've already tested on the American troops; they're going to subcutaneously laser tattoo that mark onto your right hand or onto your forehead." (Naked, British movie, 1993, directed by Mike Leigh and starring David Thewlis)

WWW=666
Someone said that www=666 in Hebrew, here's a link to it.

Now, I consider RFID's to be nothing more than barcodes 2.0.
What I fear is accurate facial recognition. Imagine shoplifting when young and the store putting you into a shared big box database. You'd be banned for life from major stores. Walk in and the alarms for shoplifters go off. No expand this to robbers, theifs ... Kinda like a morality enforcement. -

Re:Religious Objection
The purpose of the mark of the beast is a "mark" of allegiance and worship of the Antichrist. And it is a rejection of a holy God. To receive the mark of the beast you must FIRST worship the beast. Look at the following verses: "If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark. . . " Rev. 14:9 " . . . who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark. . . " Rev. 14:11 " . .
.which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image." Rev. 16:2 " . . . them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. . ." Rev. 19:20 " . . . which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his . . ." Rev. 20:4 I have recently studied this subject and it seens to me accepting an implant has nothing to do with taking mark of the beast. A good study on this subject available here. http://www.av1611.org/666/biochip.html -
And whosoever was not found...
...written in the book of life was cast into the LAKE OF FIRE." Revelation 20:15
-
Re:why does this sound so familiar?
There are plenty of books on the subject if you're interested.
And lots of them come to different conclusions. If the bible is the divinely inspired word of god, shouldn't that be enough? None of those other books are divinely inspired, are they? I already have the bible. Several, actually. Maybe you can tell me which one is REALLY the word of god.
Basically though, you look at what the law is setting out to achieve and ask in what way this is fulfilled in Christ and therefore whether it is a law that still needs followed.
So why have you interpreted this supposed prohibition against homosexuality as anything other than identifying the act as unclean, and dealt with it the same way as the others in the same chapter of the same book? Or perhaps translated the passages as prohibitions against temple prostitution, as other scholars have? You do so because you have biases, and you're reading them into the text. So are the various authors (not divinely inspired) that wrote those books.
The food laws for instance were about cleanliness and uncleanliness, an issue dealt with by Christ on the cross, when he laid open the possibility of anyone being clean in God's sight.
OK, so we read that as to lie with a woman as you do with a man is unclean, anyone can be clean in God's sight, voila! Unless of course you don't like homosexuality, in which case you choose to interpret it differently.
The plain reading of the text is clear the homosexual actions are prohibited
Hmmm. These people seem to have found that there exist some disagreements on the subject. I'm sure you are positive that your interpretation is correct, but forgive me if I don't take your word that it's "clear". In fact, it seems that the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't agree with you. But, I'm sure he's a heretic. And I'd like to say that there are a lot of other ambiguities in there, otherwise there wouldn't be so many churches and Variances in belief. It's funny, when you read about all the different beliefs held by self-proclaimed Christians, besides the bible, the one most common seems to be that anyone who believes differently than them isn't a true Christian. Even the divinity of Christ isn't a constant.
[...]
Picking and choosing verses would be inconsistent. It's a question of correctly interpreting each verse in the light of the events of the cross.
A skill that you and like-minded individuals have, and those who disagree lack? If I had to choose between two authorities on the subject, I'd choose the Archibishop over you. You'll forgive me? As you get to choose your books and make the decision in your heart, so do I. I just don't claim that the bible told me so.
Defining what is right and wrong is different from determining the punishment that must be carried out. The church is not theocratic Israel. It is a family that leaves punishment to the state authorities.
A historically recent development. For an example, see Inquisition. Of course, when the church and state are intertwined, as they have been often over the last milennium or so, saying the church leaves such things to the state is disingenuous.
The translations we have are very good and the interpretations quite clear.
Again, that's not what I read. Perhaps the books you read say so, but then, I'm sure you read them with your biases as the filter. If anyone says differently, they should be discarded

Re:Your right in a certain sense...
Assuming, of course, that the modern Christian translations are not, deliberate or otherwise, mistranslations.

Re:Sun and MS in Fraud?
Actually, Utah consistently ranks above the national average for suicides. In the 1990's, for instance, suicide was the #1 cause of death for males 24-40 and the #2 cause of death for males 15-24.
You are lying with statistics. The leading causes of death for people under 40 or so will always be suicide, homicide, and accidents, so saying that suicide is in the top 3 says nothing. All you are saying is that the state has a lower homicide/accident rate than it does a suicide rate, which is not very surprising.
Here's another example of misleading statistics. -

Hell has been slashdotted. Why didn't God think of that?

we don't want you to burn in hell
I did not submit the article but I believe that the last link was included for the sake of non-believers.
On a related note, what do you think of the sounds supposidly recorded from hell [RealAudio] on that webpage? It sounds kind of electronic to me but maybe it really is from hell?

Oh shit.....
That's right guys, we are now going to be condemned that our TV viewing habits have gone to downloading that "evil" pornography!!
I just saw a couple days ago some female televangelist condemning the internet and all the porn. Of course, I came across this while eating breakfast and looking for the news before i left for class. I laughed for a good ten minutes and watched her make statements about even some audience members viewing EVIL pornography.
The traditional media realizes they have a strangle hold on the over 34 market, and will attempt to use this angle of attack on us.
They've started with the 'studies' and try to find any example they can think of so that videogames are responsible for violence. This is the same old bullshit when rock music gained popularity. All this crap reminds me of an old friend's mom who told us playing Dungeons & Dragons will cause us to commit suicide and hand our souls over to the devil.
But we know this isn't the truth.
I'm beginning to think that even Howard Stern is beginning to pick up on this shit for once.
Now quit surfing that TRASH and go watch some wholesome programming. -
Mel explicitly stated that he added Marianism......in fact, he was surprised that Evangelical Christians were so happy about his movie, given its heavy Marianism.
For reference, the two main Marian manuscripts cited are "The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ" by Anne Catherine Emmerich and "The Mystical City of God" by Saint Mary of Agreda.
If Jesus was just a clever, wise or insightful man, his entire life was essentially wasted, and on top of that he is recorded as lying about his abilities. All of the serious documentation we have available from the time (and there's a surprising amount of it) indicates that he was considerably more than that. Jesus is better documented than any of the Caesars. There's also a heck of a lot of non-literate archaeological evidence which is very difficult to explain if the canonical record is not reliable.
But in everyday life "we're all individuals" and will carry on believing what the majority tell us. "I'm not!"

Those wacky Xtians...
Those wacky polytheistic idol-worshipping Xtians (full disclosure: I'm Jewish) also believed that barcodes were the mark of the beast. (I guess the "beast" is one of their many, many false gods.) Here is one of many references about what xtians think UPC codes are.
-
666 != 6 6 6
You'll also hear some people claim that the World Wide Web belongs to the Beast, making reference to WWW == VI VI VI == 6 6 6. But actually, the number of the beast is not the vector [6 6 6] but rather the scalar 600+60+6.
-
barcodes?
We're terrified of barcodes.
Where have you been, man? -
Re:Well sheesh.
The "Barcodes: The Number of the Beast" was, IIRC, used in the movie "
Naked" in which the protagonist has a major discourse of an impending The End, including a barcode speel. -
I'm going to hell
There is link to a web site in the hard problems rockdead that is really funny. At the bottom I chose death (Sorry, but I really like the Allman Brothers) and then I chose to reject Jesus (but I did like Jesus Christ Superstar), then I ened up at one of hell's best web pages. They even have recordings from hell! It is somewhere under Finland.
I think I'll go listen to the live version of Wip'en Post.

Re:SSNs are a problem, not national IDsRather, we need secure, unforgeable, globally unique identifiers. And smartcards are the most promising and least obtrusive way of doing that.
May I suggest a convenient mark on the right hand or forehead?
Those who volunteer to take this are hellbound fools. If it becomes mandatory, I'll go down in a blaze of glory, hopefully sending a few of Satan's minions on their way to hell in the process.

CueCat: Tool of the Antichrist? Can anyone get a copy of the DigitalConvergence business plan or placement memorandum?
I'd love to see if it includes any references to any or all of the following items:
1) Revelation Chapter 13 - which details the Antichrist's plan to force all mankind to receive a mark in their right hand or forehead in order to buy or sell goods.
Maybe their *real* plan has less to do with online advertising gimmickry and more to do with creating the de facto standard for a cheap, portable bar-code reader for the antichrist's future economic system.
2) The Islamic Hadith's Final Signs of Qiyaamah - which predicts the arrival of a monstrous 'beast from the earth' which will mark the foreheads of believers.
3) Patent 5,878,155 - defined as "Method for verifying human identity during electronic sale transactions...A bar code or a design is tattooed on an individual. Before the sales transaction can be consummated, the tattoo is scanned with a scanner. Characteristics about the scanned tattoo are compared to characteristics about other tattoos stored on a computer database in order to verify the identity of the buyer. Once verified, the seller may be authorized to debit the buyer's electronic bank account in order to consummate the transaction. The seller's electronic bank account may be similarly updated."
