Re:What is new about this.
heh, bedope.com. i haven't seen that site since Be Inc went under. the were the site to introduce the most numerically advanced version of linux, ever!
"You'll note that other versions of Linux are languishing at version 6.3 or even 2.2 - only Be Dope Linux Version 27.1 with AVN (Advanced Version Numbering) brings you a version of Linux numbered at 27.1". -
Re:Thank Godness
I always assumed it was the difference between the language and the platform
The Language is Java 2, the platform is J2SE 1.4...I think that was the original story, but that doesn't make any sense either. The language has changed, but they kept calling it Java 2.
Originally, they seemed to be actively avoiding increasing the the major version number. JDK 1.2 was a big change (which is why they started calling it "Java 2"). There was also the "assert" addition in JDK 1.4 (though I'm not sure if that deserves a major number increment). They should have just upped it to 2.0 instead of 1.2. And now with all the new stuff, they could have incremented to 3.0 instead of looking like a bunch of (clueless) marketroids.
The explanation was hilarious:
"...because J2SE 5.0 is our biggest update to the platform since the original 1.0, it felt kind of stupid that we were still calling things 1.1, 1.2,..."
I don't see how 5.0 is the logical conclusion (ironic that they did this because the old way made them feel "kind of stupid").
For something like Linux, other distros are probably under pressure to "keep up" with Red Hat's version number (remember BeDope Linux?). Everyone just calls it Linux. For x86 CPUs it's also justifiable because most people think megahertz is a performance rating (and then ther are the Mac zealots who chant the Apple PR line "megahertz doesn't matter" immediately before suggesting doubling the PowerPC clockrate for comparison purposes).
For something like Java (or Solaris), there's no need to pull that kind of crap. Firstly, people will not think Java and
.NET are the same thing so they won't think that .NET 2.0 is an upgrade of Java 1.5. Secondly, a version number is even worse as a performance rating than megahertz and I'm pretty sure that the target demographic isn't that stupid. -
Re:Pepsi Challenge here in the woods
Get yourself a cellular repeater (about $700) and install it in your house. You indicate that Cingular is fine outside the house, then a repeater would make it fine inside the house.
I bought the one from CellAntenna.com for $499 and it works quite well with my hiptop. I'm 1300m from the T-Mobile/Cingular tower, but I got no coverage inside except in certain spots; and now with it in I get great coverage in two rooms and OK in a third, at least good enough for GPRS. I'm considering upgrading the indoor antenna to one with 5dBd gain for $49, and also getting on my roof with a ladder to raise the antenna up higher on my TV pole, to get above the neighbor's hedges.
Plus the ATT tower is in the same location, so my ATTWS friends who come over report better signal too. -
More Evil than Satan Himself
I had to try the classic google. I found the second result most interesting.

Microsoft did this, too. Before the launch of Windows 98, Microsoft did had a promotional thing where they sold "Windows 98 Roast" at Borders bookstore locations. Here's a good article about it. When I saw it at the counter, it was too good of an opportunity to not crack a joke.
"Who the hell wants coffee with bugs in it?
The clerk wasn't amused, but I was chuckling for the rest of the evening.
So, don't let anyone ever tell you that Microsoft didn't support java. -

Be Dope Linux is still the best
Be Dope Linux is by far the best Linux distro. Unlike all the other distros, Be Dope Linux has a killer feature called AVN (Advanced Version Numbering).

Re:Text entry?
It's already out there. Check out Hiptop Nation. It's a blogging from camera phones site. It's for use with the T Mobile Sidekick but looks prety interesting.
Could be pretty cool. -
Sidekick
A site already exists for the T-Mobile/Danger Sidekick -- Hiptop Nation. It's a blog site for multiple users to post images from the camera included with the Sidekick. I designed a personal blogger similar in functionality to this one for my own personal site too using my Win2k server, an SMTP sink and IIS. I hate blogs, but picture blogs are kind of interesting...

Moblogging, the G3 Killer App?
A friend of mine in Tokyo recently bought one of those cell phones that can take movies and snapshots and email them to someone (over the G2(?) 144kbps link). So I had the idea to set her up with a blog and use procmail and xmlrpc to autopost her cell phone media captures to her blog.
Next thing I know, this concept is a big deal and I find similar systems popping up all over the place.
It seems to be an up and coming meme, and I imagine that this nascent meme combined with 3G speeds could really turn into something exciting. -
Halloween Scavenger Hunt
No one posted this? Weird
http://hiptop.bedope.com/
It's a halloween scavenger hunt. The objective is to use your Hiptop mobile device, and take pictures of as many things on the list as you can. There are 5 teams (which are closed, sorry johnny-com-lately's), each vying for the fabulous prizes being awarded to the one team that score the most points (each item on the list has a point value. McDonalds is 1, White Castle 2. George W. Bush is 8, Al Gore is .5). -
Status reportI've been following this pretty closely, as the company behind my pet favorite OS has, at least as far as the conventional wisdom goes, been steadily going down the tubes all year now. Random observations, no particular order:
- Though people ask for it continually, people in the know, such as _BeOS Bible_ author Scot Hacker, have repeatedly said that an open source version of BeOS will basically never happen. The system depends on licensed code that Be apparently couldn't give away even if they wanted to. I'd like to see this happen as much as everyone else, but don't count on it ever happening.
- New math department: according to The Register, Be's recent financial reports indicate that revenues are up over 600 percent. Thus proving that 600% of nothing is still, well, nothing.
- Supposedly, somewhere on beosradio.com, a ready to ship copy of BeOS r6 has been presented to CEO Jean Louis Gasseee. Various interesting takes on this one. Supposedly development on the desktop OS had basically halted, with all effort going into the IA version, so it would seem that there isn't enough code to be worth releasing a new version of the desktop OS. This is a shame, because a couple of useful components -- BONE networking, OpenGL graphics, etc -- were apparently under development before the switch to the IA focus, and it isn't clear if these components were then or are now ready for prime time. It could be a move to just get out one last version in whatever state it may be in, or there could actually be some new developments that haven't been publicized.
- Discussion at BeGroovy suggests that, among other things, this Palm press release would indicate that they're the likely buyed, while another commenter suggests, supposedly on good authority, that Sony is the likely buyer and they're already feeling out where they would want to go with Be & its technology. Then again, a a followup to that said that, at least as far as releasing BeOS6, he was full of it, and that the only developer working on BONE has been on an extended vacation anyway. Finally, one commenter noted that the final issue of BeDope ["Be's own Onion" --me.] had anticipated all of this months ago. Hrm....
- Over at BeNews, there was yet another link to the Reg article and a whole lot of discussion, generally going nowhere as these forums are wont to do, throwing out speculation that the buyer -- if there even is one, don't forget that this is still just a rumor -- could be any of Palm (they seem to like that idea; I'm not sure I see it but hey whatever), Gobe (developer of Be software -- seen as unlikely as they probably don't have much more cash than Be does), AOL, Compaq, Sun (now *that* would be a nice Network Computer...), Symbian, QNX (why?), Apple (doubt it), Microsoft (pretty sure that was a joke...) (too bad...), Amiga (ok that was definitely a joke), IBM, Hitachi, Samsung, Nokia, Transmeta, Intel, Red Hat (we're pretty safely into wild speculation territory at this point), SGI (see? completely off the wall, these people have no idea what they're talking about), QSSL (bonkers), DoCoMo (two unprofitable ideas that lose money together!), Wind River (who?), Ericsson, etc. Mostly this is all silliness. Towards the end of the conversation, a commenter notes that over on Yahoo's forums, the rumor has been confirmed (by who?), that the stock price is expected to shoot up (whoa, a whole dollar! golly!), and there will be an after hours announcement. Keep in mind however that, not so long ago, a 15 year old kid had such financial forums in the palm of his hand with his "expert" advice, so take that with the appropriate amount of salt. Still, something to watch for anyway.
- Meanwhile, *checks* yes, Be's own press page hasn't been updated since May 17. No help there...
Hopefully all those links work, if not I apologize. I'm just summarizing the various pages that I've skimmed over the course of today. If there's any truth to the Yahoo rumors, there could be confirmation of this as soon as tonight. Though it would be sad to see the company shut down or swallowed whole, a lot of people have seen this coming for a long time, and it would be nice to have some resolution of the situation. BeOS is some great consumer computing technology, and I hope very much that it has a future. Perhaps we're about to find out if that is the case...

Today, I mean. Back then it was all IBM. But now Gates with his on-loan reality distortion field would have you believe that he single-handedly started the PC revolution (with a little help from Al Gore).

"Flipper" - Innocent Typo Or Revealing Clue?Who would buy a BeOS game OS? who would write games for it? what is the advantage? it has next to no drivers for sound and 3d cards. games don't need a solid OS, they need a OS that they can tell to get the fuck out of the way.
BeDope (it's mainly humour based) has this a bit back.
Basically, it pointed at 'clues' between Nintendo and Be working on the Dolphin. Sure, it probably won't happen, but being both a BeOS and a Nintendo freak, this would be the stuff of my dreams

BeDope's Humorous Take
BeDope's humorous take on the situation perhaps accurately best describes what will happen. The BeDope outlook is that the company will be seperated in half with a long strip of masking tape that no employee will be allowed to cross, and that half the shareholders write in another name on the stock certificate. I don't think it'll amount to much more than this, anyway (even if BeDOpe is being sarcastic).

Re:Was Lack of Focus an Issue?
The article provided good insight into the consequences of internal infighting among suits, the discord caused when management pretends its job is to rule its employees rather than facilitate their work as revenue generators, and the damage that can be done when a company spends money it doesn't have and may never get.
To cover your title a bit, yes. In part, the "lack of focus" problem is inherent in open source development: each developer has a vector and the sum of those vectors may not be useful to a company. So, we have a whole bunch of people used to "doing their own thing." How does one harness that without destroying what works about it? It's easier when there's an extant company and it builds slowly.I will say that Linuxcare had MUCH heavier-handed management than I've seen elsewhere. There was an attitude that people with bad morale will be fired. Not exactly the best way to foster high morale.
"Company cultures are mysterious, how they're born, how they evolve, how they can or can't be changed once they've become a liability. Something to fear, something to admire."
"Let me add that we have no HR department and don't plan to have one. We believe management should manage without interference or excuse."
"Another aspect of our work environment is that we're cheap. In some companies, the thought police would advise me to say 'spartan,' but once you see the pair of 8-foot couches I bought for $10 in the summer of 1991, when we set up our first office in San Jose, you'll probably agree that cheap is the word."
"Don't ask me 'When is our IPO?' My office overlooks the parking lot, and when I see the BMWs of investment bankers fighting for spaces, I'll know it's time." (Be has since IPOed)
And, given the amount Linuxcare spent in its second round, I found this quote especially applicable:
"After more than six years, we spent less than $20 million. I know a number of companies that feel there's nothing you can do with $20 million."

BeOS pretends to be cool
I once seriously considered switching to a all BeOS system, but I could not get the thing to install. After non-helpful tech support e-mails I just gave up. When I bought my new system, I was having trouble dialing up my ISP in Linux so once again I tried Be. BeOS installed and ran on my new system but my modem settings were out of range and Be just felt clunky and "not nice." I am happy with linux but I love to read bedope.com and would be willing to try Be in the future (even more so on a G4).

"After that date it was decided not to use Linux"And where is your link to back up this claim? Personally I would overjoyed if those wild-eyed Amiga loons went and bothered someone else with their fantasies of technical superiority, but I don't think there are any facts to support your case.
In fact, I believe you are confusing the Amiga with the iToaster, perhaps understandable given the relative ratios of hype to shipping product in both cases.
Just to further rub your nose in it, the original Slashdot article to which you referred, http://slashdot.org/articles/99/06/24/1342228.sht
m l was, in fact, entirely accurate, given the information available at the time of writing. Yes, the headline is "Is the iToaster a Linux Box? Will there be Source?", which someone having an extended fantasy of Slashdot bias could construe into a misleading statement; but the first sentence of the article reads: Allright so several people have noted that the iToaster from Microworkz runs a "BeOS/Linux Hybrid". The article then goes into some depth to investigate this claim.Perhaps the next time you feel the need to make outrageous claims, you'll take a moment to check your facts first.

Life imitates art?
Sounds like a story on the Be Dope website from February, 1998.
Gassée to World: "I Will Eat A Bug"
Be Inc. CEO Jean-Louis Gassée is so confident of his company's
products, he is staking his stomach on it.
"If the BeOS doesn't totally amaze everyone at BeDC, not only
will I give attendees a full refund, I will eat a bug," Gassée said in
a press conference earlier today.
The first version of the BeOS to run on Intel architecture will be
unveiled at the BeDC in March. Insiders report the speed and
stability the BeOS squeezes out of the hardware is nothing short
of miraculous, compared to today's other operating systems,
such as the popular Windows line of products.
Industry watchdogs were quick to react to Gassée's claim. "If Mr.
Gassée does indeed have to eat a bug, we will make sure it is
not some small, relatively benign bug, cooked up nice in some
sort of cream sauce. We will search out something slimy, big and
raw," said OS watchdog Clyde Darksen.
"They can pick any bug they want - I am confident in the power of
the BeOS, Be engineers and Alex 'Demo God' Osadzinski to
astound all conference attendees," replied Gassée.
Other OS CEOs have not had luck with such bets in the past.
Steve Jobs had to shave his head when the Copland OS failed
to materialize. Bill Gates was forced to tatoo the rainbow-colored
Apple logo on his hip when Windows 97 (now 98) failed to ship
according to schedule. -
Addendum
The last paragraph of the article mentions that Microsoft is now no longer the only OS maker with a death ray. Further explanation of that remark can be found in the second article here.
