The Firefox connection...
Ah! Look who shows up in the comic on Page 18--it's our old friend Ben Goodger from Netscape and Mozilla, former lead developer on Firefox.
-
Firefox Corp
Perhaps Mozilla Corporation should be renamed to Firefox Corporation if it wishes to focus solely on Firefox.

Re:Smear Story. In less than 10 minutes one of the many pathetic people who like to heckle Twitter snears:
by any chance did you happen to notice this was an AP wire piece?
I would hardly call M$NBC anything close to original. Lack of originality won't excuse them from running such a nasty little smear piece. Nor does the story's origin refute any of the other things I said about it.
Dedazo, M$ is paying you too much for such shoddy work. Could you at least post something remotely useful between such obvious trolls as:
- M$ suck up, quickly defeated and bullshit, he uses Macs too.
- Talking the usual shit.
- More hate for slashdot Why are you here?
- Reality Master?
- Thinks Windows Users are Stupid and that Linux worms are "on the way", just like Vista. Yeah, he must work for M$.
Woops, you can post something useful now and then. Thanks for suggesting people give money to the EFF, that's a good idea, complete with link worth reproducing. Of course, the other 6 of the seven posts I read from you were nothing but vile and mindless insult and your ratio of useful to insult is low.

Re:Yet again I was interrupted while I work
That's being changed. See Ben Goodger's document about Firefox 2.0 and also bug 334767 in bugzilla.mozilla.org.

More Resources
These are a few sites that I found helpful. Some are a little old but I got something out of all of them.

Of course another good way to learn about extensions is to download a few and look at the code. That has probably been the biggest help to me once the tutorials, etc. gave me the basic idea of what is going on. -
There is only one way of doing this
The only reliable way I know of to open many links from one is by using bukster style links. check out Ben Godgers firefox plugin called Magpie. It supports this link style.

Re:Graphical History, Already started
It figures that Ben Goodger blogs about this very idea the day I post this.

Re:So Flash is good now?
Why flash? especially when SVG and Firefox are starting to happen. Browser can do rich graphics without losing rich content. See Picture of browser rotated 30 degress And then there is ben goodgers demo of thumbnail history . See Thumbnail history Plus there's was that article a while back about Oconner commenting on the absent developers. For flash, like advertisement, if we do not notice it, maybe it will go away.

Re:Right != smart.
"So what did he accomplish?"
I'm not sure exactly how to explain this... But he accomplished "proving" to the Firefox fans reading his blog that "Firefox is still the best, so continue spreading the word. Don't accept cheap ripoffs", sort of. Heck, on his personal blog, he has this annoying message to people not using Gecko. What's this all about? I thought we were supposed to get a choice between browsers! (Even more interesting is the way Google, Ben's employer, always supports IE and Firefox, but seem to ignore Safari and Opera, at least in the first version of new services.)Now, I don't want to be too nasty about this, but I have noticed that Asa From the Mozilla Foundation seems to be "preaching to the choir about how Firefox is leading the way and that others are just following, and always implying that you shouldn't accept anything less, and Firefox always leads the way, etc.
I wish some of the Mozilla people would stop trash talking other browsers, and focus on their own browser instead. You can talk about how excellent your product is without putting the rest down.
The Inq article is a bit over the top in one way, but there are some good points, and this kind of attitude is incredibly damaging. I hope various Mozilla representatives will be more careful in the future.

Re:Dynamic menus
SmartSearch populates its menu from JavaScript (it grabs them out of your bookmarks, but you don't have to care about that part); you may want to look at its source. I assume example code is always good
:)
It makes a <menuitem> (via document.createElement) then appends it to a <menupopup>. -
My extensions
Here's some extensions I like that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Magpie. Those who've used FlashGet with IE will love this little thing. It'll snatch all the files pointed to by links from a page according to some pattern, for example *jpg, and save them to disk or open them up as tabs. Great for collecting "nature pictures".
Firefox's bookmark dialog's "Create in" feature pisses me off. It never, ever, has the folders you need in it's puny little drop down. OpenBook removes it and replaces it with the full bookmarks folder tree.
You can reorder tabs with MiniT using simple drag and drop on the tab bar. I think this should maybe be added to Firefox itself, it's pretty basic functionality. -
Re:New Zealand release names
yes the main developer for Firefox Ben Goodger http://bengoodger.com/ was raised in NZ
-
Re:Camino?
That's the way it should be, anyone who doesn't agree should address the complaints dept. but seriously it's a niche browser for a niche os...
-
Re:NeatTa-dah! Install Magpie Firefox plugin, and you can do things like:
Bulk download files within numeric ranges using the Bukster (bkstr) protocol, e.g. bkstr://www.site.com/{01-125}/{01-10}.jpg downloads 1250 jpeg images in the appropriate numeric ranges.
-
Re:magpie
Magpie also includes tools for adjusting a site's URL by incrementing or decrementing the numbers in it
I originally downloaded magpie, because I was interested in an extention that could download images from a website in bulk automatically (rather than right-clicking-and-Save-As-ing everyone). For some reason, I never got this feature to work, hopefully it will be fixed in a later version (haven't tested it in a month or two). ... This is a good extension for those who do a lot of research online.
Yup. I find this priceless while "researching" the webs many sequentially numbered jpegs.
Although I probably wasn't interested it for the same reasons you were :).... -
Re:Royal Oak
There is a connection. Ben Goodger, the lead developer on the project is from Auckland (http://www.bengoodger.com/about/ben.shtml).
If you look at the Firefox roadmap, the 0.71, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0b milestones all have codenames that are Auckland suburbs.
-
Re:Milestone names?
The rumour is that Ben Goodger (lead developer) was homesick
:) -
Some useful background information...

Re:What a beautiful strawman you've constructed!
From you:
tell me how the functionality of Magpie can be used for something other than pornography??
From the Magpie site:
Save Linked Media: Save all files linked to from the page you're currently looking at by hitting Ctrl+Shift+S. To specify which types you want saved when you do this, use Magpie's Options panel.
From me:
You can use Magpie to go to a page with nothing but sound clips from the movie "Clerks" and you can download all the quotes. No porn involved. From you:
Please note: my problem with this is that they are Mozilla supported extensions. perhaps you would actually like to also address that point, yes?
From me:
Mozilla is going to support anything that will improve and extend the functionality of their browsers. The more valuable and flexible a tool is, the more widely it will be used and the greater the number of uses to which it will be put.Much like the word "tool."

Be careful how close you get to Mozilla
I've used Firefox before and think its a great browser, but I have a number of worries about it. I mentioned a few of them before. I've looked into it a bit more now, and the more I discovered the more worried I've become. Basically Firefox has the capacity to give very bad press to many more Open Source products, to tar them with it's dirty brush, should certain features of the browser be publicised widely.
That's a contentious point, so before you moderate me as flamebait please give me an opportunity to explain. My previous post on this subject resulted me in getting terrible karma because people unfairly called me a troll. If it is trolling to point out potential problems that we should all be wary of then, yes, I am a troll.
A brief summary of my previous post would be to say that certain features of Firefox make it too easy to misuse the web browser to surf for pornography. It was rightly pointed out at that time by respondants that the power to misuse came from the individual, not the computer program. But I've since discovered that actual Mozilla supported extensions such as this one, "Magpie" or this one "Prev/Next image", which are actually given web space and bookmarked by default by the Mozilla developers themselves can only be useful in the context of searching for and downloading hardcore or violent pornography . For the Mozilla developers to support these two extensions is similar to them offering a "Porno" button theme. If they would not support a sexually explicit theme on their homepage, why are they giving space to extensions which allow you to easily fetch pornographic pictures? Let me reiterate: these extensions are only useful in that context. What is the difference? Does this not give indirect approval of these activities? I think it does.
Pornography is destroying the Internet and the moral health of this nation. By offering openly these functionalities, by publicising and supporting them as mainstream, the Mozilla Developers are commiting a grave moral error. How long is it until some paid Microsoft shill notices them and publicly calls Firefox "the browser of the perverted"? That would be an entirely supportable conclusion. And it would reflect badly not only on Mozilla, but other Open Source projects too.
Check out the extensions for yourself and try to justify them as anything other than porn gatherers. Then join me in mailing the Firefox team, to help them back on the right path (No reply as of 04/24, and it has been about a month). Having a major open source project associate itself publicly with perversion and pornography, with the exploitation and degradation of women, is no way to gain respect. -
Re:needs to integrate better
One of your points overlooks one of Fire(n)'s best features: Quick Searches.
These let you set up pretty much any search you want to, using just the URL bar. For example, mine is set up so that typing:
g = Google search
gg = Google Groups search
movie = IMDb title search
actor = IMDb person search
word = Dictionary.com searchThat way you can get rid of the search bar, and save a lot of toolbar real estate.
See this for more info.
Then, you can take it to the next level with Ben Goodger's Smartsearch extension. With it, you can highlight terms in the browser, then use the contextual menu to search for those terms using the Quick Searches you already defined!

More infoIt looks like this name change (mainly to satisfy complaints from the Firebird DB guys) will be the last one.
The name is being filed as a trademark and is apparently pretty unique. I was at first leery of another name change, but this should hopefully sort things out once and for all. Also the new fiery-fox-on-globe logo is really cool and firefoxes (aka red pandas) are just soooo cute.
BTW, the long delay in the new 0.8 release -- which adds a MSWindows installer, a new default theme for MacOS X and improved filetype, XPI and download management and other stuff -- is explained by the time taken to verify that the new name was unique and to file the trademark.
There is more info about the name change in the official FAQ and a lot of unofficial detail on Ben Goodger's blog
-
The name change was done for a reason
Ben Goodger made a blog entry where he explained the entire rationale behind the name change to Firefox: http://www.bengoodger.com/weblog/archives/cat_moz
b log.shtml
Some of the MozillaZine forum members share the dismay of earlier posters over how this may damage evangelism efforts, because of the effort required in explaining the similarities and differences between Firebird and Firefox. Either way, because Firebird is beta software, these types of name changes can happen with minimal disruption. Imagine what would have happened if this was Firefox 1.0, not Firefox 0.8. -
giga-pr0n
I'm not really into pictures with bullshit site- and phonesex ads on them, but if the web is your choice...
Boobdex.com is a good start.
And I like the amateur pages at Voyeurweb. I get lots of goodness from Coolio's Babelog as well.
You might also spend some quality time at Domai or Kindgirls, which both have much free goodness.
If you're willing to put your money where your mouth is, Hegre-Archives is awesome, as are Quantum Proadult and Met Art. Playboy's CyberClub can keep a downloader busy for weeks.
Hardcore really isn't my area of interest, but holy crap, if you're even making jokes about pr0n, regular slashdotter NineNine has just the site for you
I use scripts to grab most of my smut, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the Mozilla extensions Linky and Magpie which combine to make my life as a pr0n browser much more pleasant. -
Re:Hmmm, USB Keys. Usefull...almost
Why do that when you can show them Firebird instead?
Firebird (and thunderbird) both run natively from their home directories as well. Unzip and run the .EXE. Or just run the .exe. Whatever.
Firebird + Linky + Magpie + "only show images from originating server" for fewer banner ads + no stupid flash plugin. A damned near perfect browsing experience. -
Re:Don't forget the users!
This is a problem across most open source projects. Indeed, most programmers know very little about HCI concerns, and it shows. Take, for example, Mozilla's UI blunders -- its numerous "managers" and the famed cipher editor (see also: commentary by Ben Goodger and comments by Blake Ross).
What's needed is not just the involvement of HCI people, but a commitment to accept the methods they bring to the table, and the results they produce. For example, if it's proven that a system like Mozilla's "Edit Ciphers" confuses more than helps, the project's drivers must be willing to listen, and get its code out of the main builds. If not, the HCI people can put as much time as they want into a product, only to burn out. -
Re:Firebird has Subaru WRX STi pic
Someone has some nice tastes in cars at Mozilla.
That's be Ben Goodger.

Re:Read the f***ing article!
It's funny, but if you click on the bugzilla picture on the new website, it takes you to bug 52094 (paste http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52094 in to your address bar): hyatt should give ben $50.
The site was designed by Ben Goodger. -
Re:Java
Now would probably be a good time to point out Tab Downloader, a Phoenix extension for auto-downloading all images opened in tabs.
Y'know...for "archival" purposes...
Oh ya, it doesn't work with Phoenix/Firebird 0.6 yet. -
Double Standards? In this post, Firebird dude Ben Goodger reports:
"...some bright spark mentioned that FirebirdSQL were themselves not the first people to use the name 'Firebird' - there exists Taiwanese BBS server software predating FirebirdSQL."
If this is true, it seems that hypocrisy is rife in this discussion. -
Pr0n downloading...(Re:Very IE biased, isn't it?)Dunno if this is also available in Moz' but using the extension available here you can open the pr0n pics in seperate tabs, and then save all of them using ctrl-shift-s to save all tabs at once!
Very nice indeed...
