Re: Yes, inertia, literally
No silly, I don't even use a desk.
I have it hooked to the TV, have it hooked to the 4.1 surround system, and basically treat it like a game console as far as switching between it and the tv's tuner is concerned.
Just use a wireless keyboard and mouse stuck to a with a tether, and a wireless game controller, and it's golden. Use a keyboard that has soft power, and its even sexier.
The issue, is the idea that a desktop grade pc should be underneath a desk, and not discretely tucked away near an entertainment center.
I don't know about you, but I use a desk all day at work, and when I want to use a computer on "me time", I prefer the recliner.

Re:Sunrise
That is bs! The reason why California wakes up with New York is because those who have to do. Those that don't, don't wake up. For example, what are the store hours or a best buy in California and in New York? http://stores.bestbuy.com/428/ and http://stores.bestbuy.com/187/. See that? Same hours! So in other words the best buy in California does not give a rats arse on when stores open in New York. They open according to the local timezone. Switch that into two timezones and things become confusing because those on either end of the zone will not appreciate the lack of sun.
But, as the summary said:
"I spent the last three years commuting between New York and Austin, living on both Eastern and Central time. I found that in Austin, everyone did things at the same times they do them in New York, despite the difference in time zone. People got to work at 8 am instead of 9 am, restaurants were packed at 6 pm instead of 7 pm, and even the TV schedule was an hour earlier. "And indeed, this best buy in Austin opens an hour earlier than your Albany, NY store.
You may refute that people in the Central time zone do things an hour earlier (and comparing 2 stores is hardly proof), but arguing that California and NY use different times is not the way to do that since under a 2 time zone system, NY and California would continue to be on different time zones.
The idea of two time zones is absolutely insane. I lived in Vienna while my wife lived in Zurich and there was an hour difference in sunrise and sunset. It was not nice to have to live and work in Vienna as it meant very early to rise and early to bed. I like the notion of time zones, and like the notion of switching because it really does make a difference. If it were up to me I would add a few more time zones because some cities at either side of a zone have really odd sunrise and sunset.
Some would say that the idea of DST is absolutely insane, yet we still have it. Personally, I'd just keep the timezones and shift the clocks by 30 minutes once and end DST.

Re:The iPhone's pretty reasonable...
I tried android for a couple of weeks to see what I was missing. I asked all my android owning friends "OK, what should I check out that I can not do on my iPhone". About the only useful response I got was wifi scanning tools. That was it. Which i don't use my phone for anyway.
Then your friends either aren't very smart, or are simply happy with their stock Android and have never wanted to change it.
Homescreen widgets, a decently-sized screen, NFC file sharing, third party keyboards (or a physical one if you prefer), custom launchers, completely customizable app icon placement (including whitespace where you want whitespace), ability to add a huge micro sd card to double your storage size (or swap it if you're bored with the media on this card and want something different for a road trip), ability to add and remove arbitrary files directly to/from the phone over cable without having to use iTunez spyware to do so, ability to go to pretty much any store and pick up a replacement charger/data cable for $5, support for a pointy stylus (on some models) instead of trying to use a marshmallow-on-the-end-of-a-stick capacitive stylus, etc., etc., etc.
Not to mention being able to take a video in any orientation and have it display correctly (i.e., not rotated 90 degrees) on any system...but from your comments, I'm guessing you partake of the entire apple pie, so you may not have seen this particular defect before if you only view your vids in your phone or on your Mac or via your Apple TV box. Oh, I didn't even know this one: apparently you can't email anything but a photo or video using the stock iPhone email app...huh. Guess you'll have to use the GMail account for business stuff, then...other Android advantages such as haptic feedback are pretty 'meh' for me, as I just turn them off anyway.
Looks like Apple is finally allowing homescreen widgets (?er, maybe? looks like you still need to buy an app?), so that's *one* thing off the list...once developers catch up and start providing more widget types, that is.
All that without having to root or 'jailbreak' the phone. If you root it, sky's the limit. True, most of the things you can do if you root the phone are things that your average Joe won't care much about (custom ROM's, complete bit-wise phone backups, ability to software-switch more system settings, ability to remove the stock apps instead of just disabling them, etc.), but to the tinkerer, they are delightful

Yup, buy the kit and do it yourself. They made them for drummers, originally: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/search.jsp?sB=r&Ntt=buttkicker
There are now commercial "gaming chairs" with built-in subwoofers too, but I bet you the Buttkickers work better: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/game-room-bar-furniture/gaming-chairs/abcat0106021.c?id=abcat0106021

Re:"mac premium"
Most users don't care about OS. They start the machine, they run their browser of choice and maybe skype. That's it.
Those people can by 3 to 4 windows notebooks for the price of this one. Some with far better specs. Sure they'll be a little heavier but to lots of people a $700-$800 difference is a huge difference.

Re:Like a refrigerator
The PC isn't dead, it's just mature
I'm not so sure. I agree with the basic assumption, that the PC isn't dead, but I don't think it follows that it's "just mature". Four years ago I did the majority of my personal web browsing on my laptop. Now, I do very little (maybe 10% to 20%) on said laptop. I just bought a new phone last January (Droid Razr Maxx HD) and it's largely replaced both my laptop and my 7" tablet. It's big enough that I just don't miss the tablet, it's mobile enough to be with me everywhere. Battery life is beyond excellent (2 or 3 days is typical with this phone, but VERY rare for a smart phone and blows away my tablet) and the browsing experience is excellent.
In short, the only time I care about the laptop is when I'm going to do "content creation" (typing !@# in) and even that is starting to fade thanks to my folding bluetooth keyboard. The Razr Maxx has an HDMI port that I haven't even begun to experiment with yet... what if there was a laptop shell (keyboard and screen) that I could plug my phone into?

Re:Is this the point in time..
Yes, but did you install CentOS for her? I am willing to bet that she didn't go build her own computer or buy one from the store, download the CentOS iso images or do a network install by herself. It's not like you can just go down to Walmart and pick up a computer running Linux.
Nor Best Buy
I know computers have sold in the past with Linux preinstalled, but I don't think any major retailer carried them.
If there are non-technical people using Linux, it is most likely because they have a technical person who installed it for them, and supports them.

Re:Apple misdirection?
For instance GPS is much better when it is done stand alone. You get a bigger screen, potential integration, etc.
A galaxy S3 has a 4.8" screen. A tomtom XL 340-S has a 4.3" screen. A garmin nuvi 40 has a 4.3" screen
Additionally, you have to pay no small amount of money to update maps in both the TomTom and Garmin devices. A Galaxy S3 updates its maps for free and does so automatically. I have yet to drive anywhere that my phone cannot map.
I fail to see why a dedicated GPS is better than my phone, especially considering that I would have bought my phone anyways.

Re:Bashing Android tabs is the point of this Ask /
Toddler proof is damned good to know, even if I'll never use that info. Thank you.
They aren't totally toddler-proof. If bashed against a hard enough surface the screen glass will shatter into really sharp shards flying everywhere. These aren't made of safety glass like a car's windows are. For that reason alone you might want to apply a tough clear screen protector on it. Best Buy sells good ones for $20, cheaper on Amazon.

Re:Nothing to see here
The computer suggested by the GP may be big and loud, but it does at least one thing well, which is to play games. I can get a PS3 with two or three games for 100$ less than the price of this thing with a hard drive. Furthermore, the summary states that it struggles to run a game which is so old it is being now being given away for free. Basically, it does nothing well.

Re:I came up with a good hack the other day too...
With a $20 screen protector (U.S. Army developed it to protect their helicopter rotor blades)
I misread that as "U.S. Army developed to protect from helicopter rotor blades" which would be pretty awesome.
Heh, no it won't protect your device from running helicopter blades, but it is a damn good screen protector. I bought it at BestBuy (ugh) when I bought this phone. I know I treat my phones roughly, the screens would eventually become real hard to read through the scuff marks. I believe it's this 'InvisibleShield', applied with a supplied solution/squeegee, just make sure the "precut for your device" 'shield' is exactly aligned, it sets up fast, or you have to do it over or live with it being slightly mis-aligned. It works great!, any scratch wipes right off and it doesn't interfere with using the touchscreen. Highly reccomend getting one for a nice smartphone.

Re:Never really understood the point.
You overstate the prices of factory in-dash GPS. Its nowhere near that expensive anymore.
Further, there are aftermarket kits for under 500 bucks and suction cup mount kits for under 200.Factory in-dash is also coming down, and manufacturers are starting to unbundle it so you can buy that without it coming withe heated seats, and that is pushing the price under 900 bucks, (still excessive IMHO).

Re:walled gardens don't work
Apple TV has existed for quite some time now. Despite this, it has yet to become much of a success. Apple probably makes some money on it, but it's just not getting all that much reach. Its integration with an ipad is pretty slick. There's also Google TV which is embedded into other players.
So far, the winner for the alternative TV seems to be gaming devices, like Xbox or PS3.

Re:Nope
PCs are popular because people feel they have a choice. If they want to buy software from staples they can. Amazon? sure. With apple, there is only one place you can get your software, and only a very limited selection of dealers to get your hardware from.
While only Apple makes Apple hardware, like Samsung makes Samsung phones (unless you go for the Sansuny Chinese ripoffs), I'm puzzled. There's only one source for Apple Mac software?
Is it this one? Or perhaps this place of PC software as you mentioned? Or too bad they can't walk into a store either.
Of course, if you were trying to confuse PC software and iOS software... which is disingenuous at best. Android and iOS, yes, you can get software from torrents, file lockers, Amazon, Google Play, Appslib, and dozens of chinese stores as well, which is a definite advantage for Android.

Re:Lots of good reasons not to buy Apple
Do you mean to compare a subsidized HTC Evo 4G to an unsubsidized iPhone 4S without even talking about the rest of the cost? It looks to me as if the EVO 4G is $599.99 instead of your $300 which makes it a heck of a lot closer to the Apple 4 that is only only 519€ unlocked in France (couldn't find a price unlocked in the US).
Unlocked HTC Evo 4G... Our Price: $297.
As of right now your price for the Apple phone is UER 519 which is $639 USD versus $297 for the Samsung just as GP said. Moral of the story: never accept any claim by an Apple fan at face value. Second moral of the story: a Best Buy link is always a red flag.
No, the moral of the story is that Fandroids will stoop as low as to link to some shady site just to prove how damn cheap they could get their phone - not that they would actually buy them there themselves.
The best reviews for zwee.com say you get your money back after they can't ship for a couple of weeks.

Don't forget most reviews did give the upper hand to the iPhone 4 vs the EVO 4G so comparing it with an iPhone 4S is probably a bit of a stretch.

Re:Hey Apple
You don't need to go to the store, right here you can see all their 10" tablets.
There are very few devices there that would pass the 10 foot test, there's a super clunky looking "Toughbook" and 2 or 3 with slightly rounded edges. That's it. Your assertion that you can find 30 different looking designs is not even close to true. the iPad is about as close as you can get to the platonic ideal form of the touch screen tablet. You can't possibly stray far from that design without reducing the devices functionality with useless bezels or hard coded buttons.

I wonder how many are HSBC complaints...
I wonder how many of those complaints are about "HouseHold Bank" or the BestBuy MasterCard?
Issues:
- If you make certain payments (ie: more than 50% or balance due or pay in full or more than 1 payment every 30 days) they will place a 14 day hold on your funds
- Requireing "Rush Fees" even for online payments when made less within 4 days of due date
- $20.00 "cash advance fee" charged because some buisness is on their list as offering "cash transfers" even though the item was NOT for a cash transfer
- If you have a $1000.00 limit, but then end up with a credit (eg: $1200.00), and have a $300.00 hold, your availible balance is still only $700.00. Makes it hard to by a TV or even a 64gb cellular ipad.
BTW... some HSBC cards are being bought out by Capital One... so buyer beware
I hope that this site would allow people to realize what crooks HSBC really are...
I have had all the above happen with me, but it has also happened to MANY others:

Re:The Internet doesn't have a tactile showroom
When most or all your products range from 30% to 100% higher than Amazon, consumers with the slightest clue aren't going to set foot in your store except perhaps to look
Random search for a 2TB hdd: on amazon shows a WD green msrp $179 selling for about $120. Then searching Best Buy for same goes for the same price.
Quit pulling numbers out of your arse. BB usually isn't the SAME, this is actually a little unexpected to exactly match it, but they're usually within +30% at the worst

And what the hell does being wireless have to do with anything? They try to sell protection plans on everything. I'm not defending BB, but your arguments are the ravings of a madman.

So there are a wide variety of options, just like the internet.

Of course, I would rather pay 50 cents at Amazon. -
Re:Seems more approprate to Apple
The original result on Siri (which recommended the Nokia) was a Wolfram Alpha result. The Wolfram Alpha result was based on products on Best Buy in the mobile phone category ranked by customer review; which seems like a pretty valiant attempt at answering the question helpfully.
Odd - when you look at mobile phones at BestBuy.com for the "Customer Reviews: Top-Rated", what do you guess the top phone is? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemplatemapper.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=-5015347436542212654&id=pcat17080&type=page&lcn=Mobile+Phones&sc=phoneOfficeSP&st=processingtime%3A%3E1900-01-01&usc=abcat0800000&cp=1&sp=customerrating+numberofreviews&nrp=15&qp=q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0800000%23%230%23%232av~~nf784%7C%7C546f702d5261746564&add_to_pkg=false&pagetype=listing
Apple® - iPhone 4 with 8GB Memory - Black (Verizon Wireless) 5 stars
The Nokia doesn't even show up on the first page. Face it - if the "Best Smartphone Ever" drops to 4th place within a week, the way to get the scores is useless - and thus shouldn't be used.

Returns policy
Here's the returns policy found on their website:
Returns Tracking
When you return or exchange an item in store, we require a valid photo ID. Some of the information from your ID may be stored in a secure database used to track returns and exchanges. Based on return/exchange patterns, some customers will be warned that subsequent purchases will not be eligible for returns or exchanges for 90 days. Customers who are warned or have been denied an exchange/return may request a copy of their Return Activity Report by calling 1-800-652-2331 or by mail at P.O. Box 51373, Irvine, CA 92619-1373. Please be prepared to provide your transaction ID, ID number, full name, address and phone number.Valid forms of ID accepted are: US, Canadian or Mexican Driver's License, US State ID, Canadian Province ID, Matricula Consular, US Military ID, Passport, US Laser Visa, or US Permanent Resident Card.
It sounds like only certain customers will be subject to the 90 day policy, depending on their return history.

Won't happen...
..but it is nice to dream.
The problem with your guidelines is that companies like Best Buy prey on the one thing most /.ers here fail to comprehend: Technological Illiteracy. Best Buy isn't interested in selling the top of the line products or having exclusive things. All they want is to take advantage of people that are upgrading their Pre-2000 computer for a new POS9001 with the extended warranty... Which will be needed because the POS9004 will be out next month and the 9001 model will break down a week into using it. So they do what they do in order to make a fast sale to people who have no idea what they are getting into as far as quality or don't realize that 90+% of computer problems can be solved with a Google search. (or no Windows on the PC to begin with for those Apple/Linux zealots here). This also holds true to Radio Shack and any other big box store like Wal Mart.
A great example is how Best Buy was hoping people would be dumb enough to spend over a thousand dollars for a HDMI cable. If you knew absolute shit about electronics or were not a /.er, you may fall for their trap because of how they hype it up and make it sound like you will get better quality picture/sound. Another example, and why Circuit City failed, is how Circuit City tried to charge people ~$30 to get backwards compatibility on their new XBox 360. (Yes it is a YTMND, but the advertisement is 100% legit)
While what you are saying is true, it would be very difficult for Best Buy to do this. To them: It is more cost effective to have some kid in HS to work on a PC for $60/hr or an extra $30 at point of sale than to hire a professional who may want more than minimum wage to work on junk... To which, the pro may not in good conscience sell. -
Re:Because they're not a tech store
$100 Monster cable? Dont be a fool. For a *slight* price increase you can have the best HDMI cable known to man: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/AudioQuest+-+Diamond+3.3'+High-Speed+HDMI+Cable+-+Dark+Gray/Black/2383276.p?id=1218324437192&skuId=2383276&st=audioquest&cp=1&lp=4

Re:Audiophiles
Audiophiles are pretty much the dumbest group of people ever. No, you can't hear a difference between this $5000 speaker and this $150 speaker.
Um, you're dead wrong about that one.
Yeah, you're obviously using the wrong cable. If you had something like this maybe you would have a different opinion.
For the record, anyone that pays $1100 for an HDMI cable should be mauled by angry weasels.

Re:Sorry, still not upgrading
If you want all that, just buy this fantastic cable! The reviews explain it all.

Re:And the point is...?
My New Years Eve.
I was playing around with a digital antenna to get a sub channel. One reason why I quit cable was because they weren't required to support them... I wanted to watch Kohaku on UTB 18.2 Hollywood. I am forced to use this piece of trash since it was all they had at bestbuy. It literally has 1.5 out of 5 stars. As I ask myself why I am moving this box around the room having to scan for channels in this day and age, I give up because the digital channel in MY NEIGHBORHOOD isn't picked up by the scanner no matter how hard I try, given the limitations imposed by the length of the power cord and the random antenna I chose.
I'm thinking, good thing I picked up a Roku box while I was at bestbuy for plan B... I heard about it, and just assumed it was a smart device that would magically find content given it is online. Felt like there were a few unnecessary steps, but I get it to work, only to find that it just has a bunch of youtube-like channels, but no youtube!? No access to any of the upload sites. WTF? If I wanted Angry Bird I'd just get the app, thank you. So what is the hooplah? The channels suck.
I hop online to lookup Roku alternatives, thinking I must have been thinking of something else... Find Boxee, and figure that must have been the magic box. I find I don't even need to buy one. I can just install it on my computer. Brilliant!
90MB download, installed, I try to run it, "dll not found". Silence. It turns out you need to install DirectX manually, but at this point if my Windows 7 doesn't support it, and no one cared to mention it during the install, I figure Boxee doesn't deserve any more attention.
So I end up just hooking up my PC as is to the TV... Shit, it works. I can watch anything. Brilliant!!!
What are all these boxes really about!?!?
...my last WTF and OMG moment of 2011. -
Re:Misplaced decimal?
I could see a typo on a single item, but Best Buy offers a complete line of cables from this company, all over $1000.
