Re:Progressive Elitism
take a look at this graphic
The guys behind that site are cranks of the first order:
Randy Mann is a weatherman for the Spokesman Review, a newspaper out of Spokane Washington, and is known locally for his ant-GW rants. But the real gem here is Cliff Harris. Although, according to the site, he "has been...rated as one of the top ten climatologists in the world for nearly 4 decades", he is entirely self-taught, having studied weather since he was "nine years old". In his predictions,
...he bases his predictions on a wide variety of scientific resources and historical records. "He's also a devout Christian and believes the Bible is loaded with clues on predicting the weather."
The evidence for my case about the relationship between conservatives and reality keeps piling up...
the guy who watches Colbert for news is sad...
...until it overflows! Friend, the fact that you somehow think that I watch Colbert for news, pretty much proves my point. Thanks for playing.

The better question is...
What is The Daily Mail's agenda in resurrecting a story from 2006 and republishing it with no dates or locations?

A lot of military bloggers speculate it's just the Mail's way of trying to embarrass the Bush administration over its China policy. -

Simple game.
At least if a felony brings a loss of voting rights where you are...
Make it a felony, convict your opposition, now they can't vote you out...

As long as a sub can hide and wait for a CVBG to cross within, say, 5 NM to any side, a hidden sub can vertical launch or float into a vertical launch one or more missiles, mines, decoys or other devices as a ruse or means to disperse the fleet and weaken the shield/umbrella.
Sure, they'll face retaliation, but for any rogue/stateless assailants wanting to damage or merely startle a CVBG (which may or may not end up in the press), this might be something we see more of -- by state-funded, stateless actors. -

Re:Good Point
Your arms get tired after a while.
I don't see this as a problem. Artists and painters (think Sixtine Chapel, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, etc...) have been using their arms for ages. The trick is that you don't have to keep your arms up all the time. Every so often you must step back to take a look at your work and you drop your arms when you do. All it takes is short rest periods between work.
Personally, I believe that the multi-touch interface is perfect for parallel computer programming. In the future, programming will become almost entirely compositional. Just drag'm and drop'm. -
It's to avoid nuh-vidia syndrome
First, it's nVidia, with a capital V, so I'm already suspicious that you don't work there
You are mistaken. The little 'n' in front of NVIDIA is actually the same size as the rest of the word, it was chosen stylistically to avoid having people call us 'nuh'-vidia. Having the little 'n' followed by VIDIA indicated better to people that it should be pronounced 'in-vidia'. Technically, NVIDIANs are always supposed to write NVIDIA, but I was feeling pretty lazy, so there you go.
And you're right, my homepage is terribly terribly out of date. Here's where I (more frequently) post stuff: http://lexamb.blogspot.com/ I'll update my slashdot profile, thanks. -
AMD Cannot Compete Unless...
If this is how it ends for AMD, this is how it goes.
AMD is fighting a losing battle. Intel defined the current market and AMD cannot beat them at their own game. They are condemned to always play second fiddle unless they can find a way to redefine the market. They can only do so by reassessing the current state of the art in multicore CPU architecture and computer programming and correct what is wrong with it. And there is a lot that is wrong with it. I call it The Age of Crappy Concurrency. Check it out.
Now that the industry is transitioning to massive parallelism, AMD has the chance of a lifetime to change the computing landscape in its favor and leave Intel and everybody else in the dust. -
From Blogistan:People detained without trial...governments collecting private domestic communication information about citizens from corporations...the tragic example of how a government could use that shit against the people... and the terrifying fact that we are considering giving immunity to companies that supply this government with information about citizens when Congress has already turned a blind eye towards the detention of people indefinitely.
So...ummm, eventually corporations will supply the government with information about the masses and the government will be able to detain us at will. Makes that China Yahooian agreement look fair and balanced, doesn't it?

Re:I, for one...
he would not continue to expand the government.
I am afraid he would since many of his "morality" proposals require wide-spread governmental powers. Same for his militaristic (which he denies while actively foting for them) and many other aspirations. He simply wants the big governmental powers in places different from where they are now. This is in actuality the same problem most of the "small government" conservatives have, they all come with pet wacko social dogmas, enforcement of which is completely at odds with their espoused views on the mechanics of governance.
he would not continue to take our civil rights and privacy
Only if it came to abortion
... or sex between people he does not approve of ... or racial segregation ... or religious persecution ... or corporate excesses such as trusts and monopolies ... or basic social safety nets ... etc and so onHe would not continue to raise the cost of government
See above. His practical, deeply cherished by him beliefs are at odds with his overall proclamations.
he would do what he says he would and has a long voting record showing he does do what he says.
Err, it is not a good thing. Let me repost this link from another poster's post. Go see yourself.
Right now- all other republican and democratic are lying so badly that we are literally voting for mystery men owned by the corporations.
Unfortunately Ron Paul is no panacea for this.
Ron Paul may not win, but he has a chance to shift the republicans back to being a small government party. Right now they are like a bunch of pro business, fascist, drunken sailors.
And is a faux-Libertarian, nationalistic religious racist zealot any better? This straregy of trying to elect a patently disturbed individual so to "upset" the staus quo of corrupt fat fascists does not strike me as a particularly wise one. There are some wee unintended consequences possible that I can see, even if you don't.

Re:Huge blind spots when driving***So leave the licening to the people who are competent, ie. not the government but people operating in the private sector.***
If you are an American you are almost certainly about to learn in a very painful way about some of the pitfalls of letting the private sector operate totally without interference from the government. Specifically, you are going to find out why it might have been a good idea to have the government have a voice in the selection of real estate appraisers and why it is not a good idea to let lenders pick appraisers who will come up with the numbers they want to see. Try this link. http://calculatedrisk.blogspot.com/. You want the article entitled What's Wrong With Approved Appraiser Lists. If you have time, be sure and follow the links to www.prudentbear.com where serious questions that might even be valid are raised about the near-term solvency of much of the US financial system. (The criticism of the government here incidentally is not that it screwed things up but that it didn't do enough to stop this nonsense before it got so serious).

Apple may soon announce to step back for Sun
It's very questionable that they would even extend their Java efforts for the iPhone when Java support by Apple for Mac OS X might soon be over, but continued by Sun.
Main argument: Kernel APIs are stable since OS X 10.4, all major high performance graphic foundations since 10.5. The JDK could be put almost completely onto public APIs so Sun could take over development without the need for so much insider involvement anymore.

Brainstorm
Okay, Many users has always blamed Gimp UI, i just love it because it is intuitive and very clear and does things how you exept them to be done. (Still it miss few great things like smart objects what came on CS3 and smart layers what came PS 7(?)).
Now many users need to wakeup to that fact, Photoshop UI is more terrible than Gimp. Because Gimp does not try to be UI for everyone and for every task. It just try to be good photomanipulation application. No 3D, No video and so on. (You can add those edits with plugins).
Now we need open brainstorm to get better UI for photoshop users like gimp has http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/ . To get ideas from new users and old users. Photoshop UI should change to be better. There are stupid ways to do things, like almoust every edit goes trough image > adjustments, EVEN it would be done for layer or for selection. On gimp, this is done via menu color or tools. Image menu always does what you exept to be done for image and layer to layer. You dont do something to layer via image menu. And Gimp is better because it does not mix image and canvas meaning.
Like if you open 3 pictures to same picture in photoshop, everyone has own layer. Why you need to still edit them as "image" when you edit layer (gimp edits it as layer) and you edit image as "image". And you edit canvas as "image". No sense at all.
By usability in view, photoshop gets worse points vs Gimp. But by technical view, it gets better points (because 16/32bit and faster preview).
Now, lets hope Adobe gets better UI what could make SENSE.
ps. There is more 'stupid' usability errors on photoshop than Gimp, not because there are more options. Because Photoshop tryes to be best for everyones. Gimp allows very good customazion, it just rocks with good windowmanager (like compiz-fusion) because you have floating windows and dockers, you can have many pictures open and still you find what you want very fast. But it still has many entrys on taskbar! -

Re:Or maybe....
I'm simply delighted how law enforcement is called bad guys in this analogy =^.^=
There is more than just law enforcement that is interested in the contents. BSA, RIAA and MPAA are the ones I was not mentioning by name. The US post office can open your mail.. But there is a huge red tape procedure to follow. X-ray is one thing to look for explosives. Opening every letter to see if it has the lyrics of a popular song by the RIAA is not permitted by the post office. Inspecting every letter by the DHS for bomb plans is also not permitted, except electronic mail. The post office may know you mailed a CD to your buddy. The package is not inspected to see if it contains the latest teen pop rap.
Online the privacy standards are now seen as a problem to internet users as attacks on users are clogging up the court system an fleecing many to pay the extortion money to the settlement support center. If there was privacy, this would not be a problem.

Re:It's a shame.
I wish I could point to the place in my post where I said that ID papers weren't in COMMON use, but I can't - I thought it, but I didn't write it.
That being said, it still struck me as odd that the Founders would write in a clause that would protect government "agents", i.e. those issued identification papers by a government, which identified them as members or agents of that government. I don't think the French were issuing state ID's to shopkeepers and prostitutes.
So I searched on Google (where else) for "fourth amendment meaning of papers". Of course, I got links to every high school term paper on the meaning of the 4th amendment, but the first 3 meaningful links are as fiollows:
http://crimlaw.blogspot.com/2004/12/more-on-textual-interpretation-of-4th.html
http://www.law.cornell.edu/anncon/html/amdt4frag1_user.html
http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment04/02.html
All of these speak directly to "papers", and not a single one references "identitity papers" in any way. In these articles, "papers" meant business and other documents. This ties in with the historical context - due to the punitive taxes, many of the colonists were smugglers, and records of purchases and sales would be prime evidence supporting charges of tax evasion.
I've done my part, now it's your turn - cough up some links supporting your position. I may also dig up soem ConLawbooks or constitutional history, but that's for later. -
Re:Help for Canadians receiving calls from US?
Bad enough an entire blog is dedicated to listing voicemail messages and there's a ton of them in there. The second one down is the exact same message I'm getting annoyed with. "See Mar 15: Recording of travel fraud in this link": http://phonespam.blogspot.com/search?q=florida
I can't find it now, but there's more than a few google postings about this company. I had the number in my call display and it identified at least 2 companies that were responsible, then again with the call display records being randomized, I don't really know its them. Some help the government is in all this.
Of other postings I've found, people also tried to talk the telemarketers invovled in these scams. Unless you provide them with CCd details, they will immediately hang up on you.
Personally, I don't think the do-not-call registries or fines go far enough. If people from Enron go to jail for fraud, they should impose prison sentences on people committing telemarketing fraud. If you're talking to someone and scamming them, you should go to jail. -

Re:Tar and feathers
The American public doesn't have a fucking clue what they want, to say nothing of what should be done. Democracy needs more than a flavor -of-the-week mob rule. Occasionally (often of late) the people need someone to save them from themselves. It's too bad that the democrats are such a lousy lot of cowards and morons, because after them we don't have anyone left to do the job.
Every last democrat who is not actively supporting the impeachment and trial for treason of the entire bush administration deserves a place beside them at the gallows. Especially these assholes who decided that spending time tossing each other off over one of the crappiest works of fiction ever put to print was more important than doing the people's work.
The United States of America should be the greatest nation on the face of the earth and it's about fucking time we had some "leaders" who understand that and act accordingly. -
PSP is a failure, there's no getting over it
"The idea of a handheld rivalry with Nintendo is an irrelevance. Those formats don't appear in our planning. It's not a fair comparison; not fair on them, I should stress. That sounds arrogant, maybe, but it's the truth. With the DS , it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen. But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."
- Phil Harrison, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, on comparing PSP to DS in an interview with MCV
source.
Considering what Sony set out to do, and how they obviously expected the PSP to perform, it can only be described as a horrible failure. -
Some background from Uruguay
I'm from Uruguay (the country that has actually gone out and bought the XOs), and... it's not at all like you imagine it.
We have electricity and running water everywhere, better literacy than the US and public education for everyone (better than that of the US if Slashdot whining is to be believed !)
On the other hand, average wages are about U$ 300/month, and so a computer is a luxury item for most, and very especially for parents of school-age children like the ones which will be the recipient of the XO.
You can read at the unofficial Proyecto Ceibal blog (the Uruguayan OLPC initiative) about how this has the potential to be a nice step forward :)

Re:Why not impeach 'em all? From Political Arithmetik http://politicalarithmetik.blogspot.com/
There is a famous question in political science: "why do voters hate Congress but love their Congressman?" The simple answer is that the institution is a convenient whipping boy for the President but also for its own members. Many members (who often enjoy personal approval levels well above 50%) run for reelection by running against Congress as an institution. The result is approval ratings of the Congress that are poor in comparison to those of the President or of its individual members. Thus it becomes a dangerous thing to make direct comparisons of Presidential and Congressional approval. The two are quite different in their norms and dynamics.
If you want accurate and unbiased political poling numbers, Political Arithmetik is a great site. The author combines multiple sources to derive accurate numbers, and he also analyzes the results to say what the numbers mean or do not mean.To see a graph of the current Republican vs. Democratic Congressional approval ratings, see http://bp3.blogger.com/_MRs_Nt465oE/RzBfdgrzvwI/AAAAAAAACew/sHpP3iGp8z8/s1600-h/CongPartiesJob.png Yes Congressional approval is down. But Republican approval is down more then Democratic approval, and both are not very good.
You can express uninformed opinions, or you can try and find useful facts. Sadly, the Slashdot way is to go for uninformed opinion.

This is called rsync with hard links. I have a shell script I've been using for a few years that does nightly backups of my machine to another via SSH (even works when I'm on the road).
