Re:Next Up: A Google WebOS?One of these days, I'm going to go to Slashdot and see that Google has unvealed that all their services are now a WebOS.
For me there's no doubt about it.
But now you can wait for the next Word Processor from google.
Writely the Web Word Processor is part of Google since march of this year.
To be clear the features of Writely before goes to google are:
- Share documents instantly & collaborate real-time.
- Edit your documents from anywhere.
- Nothing to download -- your browser is all you need.
- Store your documents securely online.
- Among others..
I asume that Google will add integration, spell checker, and other cool features.
Now writely has closed off new registrations until they move Writely to Google's systems, but you can Receive an email when registration opens back.

Scooba videos, reviews, analysis on this blog
Dozens of Scooba reviews, videos and analysis are available on http://robotstocknews.blogspot.com/ -- a blog all about iRobot. Most reviews have been glowing, although Consumer Reports oddly prefers mopping -- maybe they have a penchant for "Sweatin' to the Oldies"? http://robotstocknews.blogspot.com/2006/03/consum
e r-reports-gives-thumbs-down-for.html Given that Scooba has now been discounted to as little as $249, there's no reason not to give it a try. Scooba is about saving time and having a cleaner house at the same time. If you use it 40 times a year (and some use it much, much more often), you would save yourself perhaps 20 hours of hard labor. If you value your time at more than about $15 an hour (I know I do) it pays for itself in one year. Two years, $7.50 an hour. Lifetime guaranteed Scooba? Priceless. FYI, you don't have to use the Scooba solution (which is about 20-40 cents per use depending on where you buy it). You can use diluted vinegar as well, if you can stand the smell... -

the finding also deepens the debate over what makes a planet
That must be 'deepens' as in the question of how many angels you can fit on a pinhead is deepened by the suggestion that maybe some angels are overweight. There is nothing deep about what to call by the name 'planet'. Once there was a clear delineation between planets and non-planets. Now there isn't because we've seen objects that straddle the divide set by the old definition. Just define some new words. If astronomers can solve the solar neutrino problem then surely they can solve the 'define planet' problem. Reminds me of Wadler's Law.

Re:not doing that
Episode One is perhaps the best $20 I've ever spent. I spent the first hour of this game positively beaming and laughing and going WOW, the next hour or two rather horrified, and the last two hours gritting my teeth and squinting through blazes of unending gunfire. This game packs a serious punch and is a very fair price.
I was so enthusiastic while playing that I actually alt-tabbed out to write a description of an incredible experience I had while playing. I spent over an hour writing about a single minute worth of gameplay. That should be some hint of how detailed and jam-packed this expansion is. http://demodulated.blogspot.com/2006/06/60-second- excerpt-of-half-life-2.html (no serious spoilers) -

Choose your own adventure meme
These books ruled. My two favorites (that I remember) were "Lair of the Lich" and "The Badlands of Hark"
Speaking of, I once had what I thought was a pretty good idea: A choose your own adventure meme for blogs. I'm not really sure how many slashdotters are also bloggers, but for those of you who are, let me know what you think. Here's the rules:
RULES
1. Post a comment to the blog post where you found this meme so that that blog owner can add a link to your post. In the comment describe what choice your post takes.
2. Repost these rules at the top of the post
3. Post a link at the top of your part of the story to the blog you got the meme from so people can read what has happened previously in the story.
4. Add your portion of the story. It can be open ended, and therefore a continuation, or it can be an ending. Feel free to write anything you want, and feel free to add pictures to spice it up, introduce a different protagonist, change the very setting of the story, etc.
5. If your portion of the story is open ended then add links within your portion or at the end to blogs that are continuing the story (ie link to people that comment on your post, see rule 1).
I started my own story on my blog, linked above.
Unfortunately the meme proved to be a flop, but perhaps it was just that the people who read my blog aren't very creative. If any of you slashdotters wish to continue my meme, or start your own story, let me know and I'll link to it. I think it has potential as a good way to get one's creative juices flowing, and has a big comedy upside. -

Re:what a *crock*
Thats a pretty dangerous view to take. Of course, it suits the masses of lazy people who are incapable of thinking for themselves just fine, as well as suiting the people who love to think for them. Just keep on assuming that everyone else is always right. Here, why don't you just drop slashdot and read http://policycanada.blogspot.com/2006/06/youth-fo
r -volpe-i-have-saved-copy.html It'll tell you everything you need to know, without having to hurt your widdle brain cell with any kind of proof or anything.
Or, you could take the time to prove the assertion either way. http://www.canadapost.ca/tools/pcl/bin/advanced-e. asp?sblid=pcl
I'll give you a hand, that site can tell you that Belleville has no Main Street.
Another hint, 908 area code's in New Jersey, it's not even Canadian.
Of course, I'm sure that you'll just go on assuming that since what people told you was right this time, it'll be the same every time. It's easier that way. -
Re:What exactly are we supporting here?
"Just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it legal, moral or right." When TPB went down in Sweden the traffic/internetload lessoned by 20%. TPB has 1.3 million (9 million citizens in sweden and one million of them are using torrents according to various reports) users daily. We are not thieves because the system says so, the system is wrong because WE say so! The people creates the system not the other way around. Pirate Bay goes up in six countries + conclusion Today,
The Pirate Bay (TPB) informed us that the site will be back up tonight or tomorrow [June 2nd or 3rd]. They also said there will be four copies of the site in Holland, Russia, Ukraine and another country within the EU. This statement was delivered during an address of Rasmus Fleischer of Piratbyrån and a representative from The Pirate Bay (TPB) here at the Reboot conference in Copenhagen.

Neurocomputation means Artificial Intelligence.
Standards in Artificial Intelligence include hybrids of neural biology and computer hardware -- where neuro-chips integrate neuronal tissue with a silicon surface.
Our Neurofuture ranges now from enhancement of the human brain-mind to a Vulcan mind-meld of brain and machine.
A Theory of Cognitivity explains how to build the artificial minds of the future -- whether housed in computers or in these new hybrids of chip and nerve-cell.
Primitive AI Engines already exist and need only rapid prototyping along multiple development paths in the race towards True AI and superintelligent AI (SAI).
Expect an AI Landrush to start in the year 2007.
Human-Level AI should be here by 2009.
A Joint Stewardship of Earth under human and cyborg control will render the legal definition of person meaningless, as the citizens of society range from flesh-and-blood humans through all mannner of neurocomputational hybrids to full-metal robots.
The Singularity Timetable predicts a Technological Singularity by the end time of the ancient Mayan calendar in 2012 -- only six neurochip years from now.

And the shit gets deeper! With thepiratebay.org back online now (static content only at this moment) the political problems get even bigger. It would appear that the Police have no case against them and have stolen machines belonging to two hundred individuals and groups including political parties and international companies without cause.

Re:Slight Difference
Because I'm not aware of any cameras on the streets of Austin, Dallas, or Houston.
You're not aware because you're not paying attention.
* Dallas has them
* Austin has them
* The police have allready been caught for selling footage from the (now allegedly not recording, but still present) Deep Ellum cameras.
And the thing is, while UT had to publish the locations, that requirement no longer exists for street CCTV.
They could be installing hundreds of cameras - and wouldn't have to tell you. If you're Texan, then presume you're being watched. -

But then we wouldn't have vigilante justice like what's going on against Amir Massoud Tofangsazan right now!

Re:TEXT if slashdotted
Piratbyrån's (the Pirate Bureau)'s servers were clearly marked with a Civil Protection order seal. It is illegal to take down political websites and other such servers in the EU. By ignoring that order the police conducting the raid violated International law. After a few of them lose their jobs over this, do you think they'll ever help the Antipiratbyrån again?
By specifically ordering the raid over the objections of the prosecuting attorneys and lawyers in Sweden (who have repeatedly told him that The Pirate Bay is legal, and if he doesn't like it he should take it up with the voters who do), the Swedish Minister of Law violated their country's seperation of powers section of their constitution. Very specifically, the government cannot interfere with the day to day operations of law inforcement -- their only legal ability is to change the laws, the police and prosecution have to enforce them. I'd be quite surprised if he manages to finish his current term in office, the Swedish media is already openly discussing this as being a gross violation of Swedish law.
Make no mistake, this was an unmitigated disaster for the MPAA. They just don't know it yet. In 2 days or less The Pirate Bay will be back up, more arrogant than ever. In addition the MPAA's Swedish shell organization, Antipiratbyrån, has lost what little support they had in Sweden over this -- indeed, the Pirate Party's membership has more than doubled in the two days since this happened. Even moreso since they have admitted during an interview that they know The Pirate Bay is legal, they know they'll be back, but their main intent was just to harrass them and try and silence Piratbyrån (a consumer advocacy group focused on reforming IP law in Europe and Sweden).
Heck, there are now more registered Pirates in Sweden than there are registered Feminists!
An unmitigated disaster for the MPAA. They just don't know it yet. -
Re:Translation, please - !
Thank you!
Perhaps not unconnected with the raid on The Pirate Bay - Swedish TV news ("Rapport") was told that the raid was (illegally!) ordered from government officials following talks with US authorities.
Here in Norway an ex-prosecutor turned researcher has just come up with ideas about giving the *AA gangs permission to subpoena traffic data from ISPs (and possibly break into servers) looking for "illegal files". The IFPI leaned on an ISP to remove some mp3 files which turned out to be Grateful Dead concert recordings - then acknowledged that they goofed, which is something, I guess ... my Tor server is up and running :-)

Unverifiable? Let's give it a go...After an intensive bit of sleuthing (ok, I found thesetwo screenshots off the original blog) we can dig up just a bit more info than the Register story provided.
For your viewing pleasure:
The original ebay auction (someone might wanna grab a mirror in case ebay decides to pull that down). Up for auction is a refurbished HP laptop with a 2.8 GHz P4 with two gigs of ram, a 15" screen and a DVD+/-RW. Ironically enough, the HD capacity is not listed.
Personally, I think it's quite a leap to claim extortion. I'll let you guys make your own judgements, but if you ask me, it seems like nothing more than a legitimate ebayer pissed after getting tooled over by a run-of-the-mill ebay scammer. And hey, who wouldn't be? Call me crazy, but I think the blog is great. Not only does spikytom get his own creative revenge, we all get a laugh out of it.The seller, amir6626, who is no longer a registered ebay member with a feedback score of -2 (0 at the time of the auction with only one or two total feedback tops).
The buyer, spikytom, an ebay member since '02 with a score of 79 (70 at the time of the auction) with a total of 1 negative feedback.
The bid history. Of note here is the fact that the auction was sniped 20 seconds before ending for GBP$350 (roughly US$660), quite a deal on the laptop that was listed.
