Think women can't do math?
Hardly anyone thinks this because there is ample evidence to the contrary. Moreover, the average woman is probably about as good at math as the average man. But when you're hiring in a "mathematical profession" you're not looking at the entire population; you're looking at the set of men and women with relatively high mathematical ability. Within that set, at least in the United States, men outnumber women. This could very well be the result of socialization; I'm not necessarily arguing from physiology. But it's hard to argue with numbers. The ratio of men to women among the set of SAT takers with a perfect math score, after adjusting for the fact that more women than men take the SAT, is 2.5 to 1. So, all else being equal we should expect about 28% of engineers and mathematicians to be women. Interestingly, if you look at the percentage of Math Ph.D.s granted to U.S. citizens (in 2010) women earned exactly 28%. With respect to engineering and computer science, approximately 20% of bachelors degrees (in 2008) were granted to women, so there may be work to be done there. My guess is that this is due to the stereotypical reputations of CS/Engineering (bearded hackers with poor hygiene and huge egos) being less appealing to women than to men.

Meat has TEN TIMES the caloric value by weight
Missing from the vegetarian fear fest is that meat has ten times the caloric value of vegetables. For example, the 100 calories achieved with 1.2 ounces of porterhouse steak requires eating more than 12 ounces of Broccoli. . That ten-fold higher mass also has an even higher bulk, since vegetables are much less dense than meat. That means ten times the cost, at least, to ship the same caloric content as vegetables compared to meat.
Of course we need vegetables too, for vitamins and minerals, as part of a balanced diet. But meat has high value as a compact source of calories required for daily life. As far as water usage goes, the California drought is temporary. There is no scientific evidence that the intensity or frequency of drought in the western U.S. is increasing (). All that is required is managing agricultural cycles to accommodate dry periods. When you interfere with that management, for instance by blocking water supplies to agriculture to protect delta smelt, then drought can get the upper hand. That's what's happening today in California. -
Re:Groovy ...
If that is true of California, won't it be even more true for Mars? California has lots of farmland -- Mars, not so much.
Define farmland, and note that Mars has more surface area than all of the land on the Earth, and millions of metric tons of water as well that is even visible from modest telescopes on the Earth. It will take technology to make the water usable for farming, but it isn't that hard, and flat land capable of being farmed is also possible.
You might be surprised at how much farmland can be created on Mars. One very likely view of what farms on Mars will look like can be found here:

Re:Link no longer there.Okay, here's a link to the blog cited by the PopSci article. The blog appears to contradict the summary that the Russians were alone in developing these primitive robotanks:
There were similarly designed tanks also in the German army. There was the teletank V-4, there were small anti-tank “torpedoes” such as the radio-guided “Springer” and the “Goliath”, which would unwind an electrical control lead behind itself. A “Goliath” is found in the armoured vehicle museum at Kubinka. It is difficult to consider all of these designs as being successful. It was very difficult to direct a “Goliath” up to a tank even from a distance of 100 meters. The battery had a charge, which allowed for only eight minutes of movement, and the low clearance did not provide for sufficient mobility. Equipping these tankettes with a petrol engine did not save the situation. Nevertheless, they were able to carry out certain functions – including mine clearing and attacking fortifications.
The Russians tanks had the advantage in having a longer autonomous range, as the German tanks appear to be wired ("unwind an electrical control lead") rather than radio-controlled.

You Google skillz are also (apparently) invalid. A Google search for "rebirth windows" returns this link on the first page which provides instructions for getting it to work on Windows 7/64.

Farmers in California grow a lot of rice which requires a lot of water. Most places that grow rice have lots of water. In California, even in "normal" years, there is no rain in the summer (dry season) so they have extensive dams and canals paid for by state and federal taxpayers which provide them lots of cheap water. This year, there is a drought so the reservoirs are dry and the farmers are whinging seriously about "their" water.https://www.facebook.com/pages/%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%B6%D9%84-%D8%B4%D8%B1%D9%83%D8%A9-%D9%83%D8%B4%D9%81-%D8%AA%D8%B3%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%87-0566398004/211510419029158 http://remas2010.ucoz.net/inde... http://remas2010.ucoz.net/inde... http://remas2010.ucoz.net/foru... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... http://elenjaaz.blogspot.com/2... https://www.facebook.com/pages... https://www.facebook.com/pages... https://www.facebook.com/pages... Bedwetting Liberals Hate This So Much!
Blacks are inferior as a group.
Look at the way all of the blacks just go apeshit so to speak over a bunch of fucking sneakers of all things!
Then ask yourself why white people don't riot over the latest Apple gadget even though they gather in large crowds waiting for them. I mean an objective person might think whites are more civilized!
Oh does anyone remember when the blacks rioted like crazy after Hurricane Katrina? Isn't it JUST A LITTLE STRANGE the way white people in Colorado banded together and helped each other when they were hit with a natural disaster instead of rioting and looting like the blacks did? I mean an objective person might think whites are more civilized!
Oh and blacks are responsible for nearly all the murders in Marion County! That is what you would expect from a violent tribal uncivilized race.
Interesting when a black man admits blacks are to blame for the hellhole that is (86% black) Jackson Mississippi? Quote: "Look at recent history, like in South Africa, when apartheid was abolished,” Lambus said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “Blacks went on a crime spree.""
It goes on and on. Probably no point in posting this since people who are objective already understand the destruction and violence and cost blacks bring anytime they are abundant. It is not just USA. All over the world black-governed nations are hellholes. But objective people knew this. It is the people indoctrinated to believe that acknowledging FACTS is somehow "racist" who just can't admit it. None are so blind as those who will not see. -

Re:Severe, and yet not severe.
SSL/TLS communications are just as secure as they always were.
No, it is not.
CA model is much more important than the public CA "trust". There is nothing stopping an application designer from using private CAs for their application. This bug breaks the trust to any CAs, including the private ones.
Let's think about it (as a thought experiment) what is required for this to be an effective attack.
SSL spoofing is already a common attack. Not just France and the NSA but also regular old password-sniffers. This vulnerability falls under the same class of attack as SSL spoofing; a trusted certificate is secretly replaced by an untrusted certificate.
There were some common examples right after unicode was allowed in domain names and people came up with similar-looking links for major companies with unicode symbols that look identical to the ascii glyphs. That will be one comparison. The other comparison will be for a government-style ssl spoof attack.
First, the attacker must redirect you from the legitimate site to their illegitimate site. This is equally difficult with or without the TLS attack. The government-style attack could intercept the traffic over the wire and redirect you to the bad MitM manually. The fake link version could use bad links in phishing emails or spamming the internet with the fake link to the MitM server. Other options include host entries and software secretly installed on the machine. In any event, the bug does not affect this most difficult step.
Second, they need to appear as a valid connection. For the TLS bug, the attacker must create a false certificate that will test as valid. With the bug being known, that is pretty easy. Then they must use this when the certificate is requested during TLS handshaking. Now contrast this with a traditional attacker who must get their certificate signed by a CA for the fake domain; this is also fairly easy to do in practice. Many fake-name certs have been issued over the years and successfully used in news-reported attacks. Sometimes certificates have been forged in other ways, such as the Flame virus. Similarly the spy agencies have no difficulty getting their fake certificates signed by a CA.
Finally, the attacker needs to make a connection with the legitimate host. This is the same in all conditions, and has been successfully been used in SSL spoof attacks for years. When there is secondary authentication required the MitM just requests the data from the client. Complex attacks can sometimes permit a second connection directly to the victim where two-factor authentication across servers is required in such a way that the authentication passes. Nothing new here.
So really, the only thing the bug makes easier is the task of getting a fake certificate. Since this was arguably the EASIEST step in SSL Spoofing to begin with, and because SSL Spoofing is long-established as an easy attack that is difficult for lay people to detect, it means the attack really is a relatively small issue.

Re:Why?I do not suppose the actual reasons for disallowing electrical appliances in the office is of technical nature. I think that is just bureaucracy, or an insurance one most likely. It may even be that there used to be good reasons(*) not to allow employees to touch anything electrical other than keyboard and the mouse.
* - if you are wondering what that heck that is, I can help, as I tried that once myself (out of curiosity). The two metal things are old type razor blades connected directly with the power supply and separated with matches or some other isolator. You put it into water and it boils in few seconds. The dangers are: you can electrocute yourself or brake the fuse but if it worked then you had an advantage of not very well tasting tee or coffee.

Re:Refund on overhearing my pizza order
The modern incarnation of tea party groups is basically a lesson in major party co-option and poisoning of a movement to neutralize it. The Democrats certainly don't want to focus on its origins, because those are rooted in an anti-war / anti-coroporate welfare philosophy and Democrats still like to pretend they aren't neo-cons. The GOP certainly didn't want it to spread and disturb its social issue message which it uses to cover its financially wanton behavior.
As for recent history, which has been effectively erased by both parties, there were Ron Paul Tea Party events in 2007 with a major focus on ending the wars in the middle east and protecting civil liberties: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... Check out the tags on the boxes being thrown in the the water for example around 1 minute in: "iraq war" "corporate welfare" "homeland security" etc. Or this video from Nov. 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... which is 80% anti-war (warning, pictures of burned and blown up kids from Iraq or Afghanistan).
Then shortly after Obama's election, Karl Denninger popularized an idea of sending tea bags to Congress. http://market-ticker.org/akcs-... His focus was on the fraud and abuse the Feds winked at during the financial meltdown, and he was livid when the GOP coopted the Tea Party, and turned it into some "Guns, Gays, God" focused BS: http://market-ticker.org/akcs-... Indeed, it took almost no time for the GOP to co-opt the Tea Party: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...
And in case you think Denninger is just another Koch brother wannabe, he voted for Obama in 2007: http://voxday.blogspot.com/201...
He also supported the Occupy Movement's focus on banking fraud and interestingly, thought it's lack of centralization good, seeing centralization as the fatal exploitable flaw for tea party groups: http://rt.com/usa/tea-occupy-d...
Anyway, today's Tea Party is a caricature the DNC and GOP created for their own purposes by poisoning the original ideas.

Re: Why single out Whole Foods?I pulled out some of my sausage books. First, let me apologize--in my prior posts, I have been mixing up nitrites and nitrates. Sodium Nitrite is in instacure #1 (sodium nitrate is added to instacure #2 which is not used for things like bacon...usually only air dried meats like aged salamis) and is used when meat will be smoked/steamed/etc. Bacon is just cured and smoked pork belly (and pork belly was often listed on restaurant menus as "Fresh Bacon" until recently when pork belly became trendy again).
The Ruhlman/Polcyn charcuterie book doesn't go deep enough into detail, but cites Harold McGee's "On Food And Cooking". I don't have a copy, so I've tried to find some other sources.
- Ruhlman writes about "Uncured" and "No Nitrites or Nitrates Added" Bacon. Of particular note is his link to his article about meat curing safety concerns where he talks about the actual dangers of nitrites (only a few grams of sodium nitrite can kill you, which is partly why curing salt is only ~6% sodium nitrite).
- Very interesting article on how little nitrites even come from cured meat
. 400+ hotdogs (or quite a lot of bacon) has fewer nitrites than a single serving of Arugula (a whole foods favorite) or 4 servings of celery or beets.
- Fact Sheet from American Meat Institute. Possibly biased source, but has some discussion of how beets/celery are used to create cured meats (which by definition include nitrites).
- UW-Madison Meat Laboratory pamphlet. Has some good discussion of what the different terminology on meat product labeling means. Particularly of note is the USDA rules that allow you to call products cured with non-traditional sources of nitrites "uncured" despite the fact that they are cured. Also discusses how meats only make up 5% of our nitrite intake and ~90% of the nitriate and nitrite added to meats is broken down and converted to other compounds, leaving very little behind.
- Some discussion on the curing process from one of the better sausage resources online. Cited for discussion of actual quantities and ratios of curing salts needed to work. You need about 50ppm to be effective, the FDA asks for 156ppm to ensure enough curing plus a safe amount of nitrites. If whole foods is selling it, you can be sure it meets these requirements.
- I recognize that I have yet to provide a source that substantiates the claim that the celery-bacon may have more nitrates than traditional bacon. According to this abstract (can't access the full paper), it is not possible/difficult to "analytically measure the amount of nitrite produced by this [alternative] process" (since nitrites break down and while you can measure their presence after the fact, you can't measure their presence in the initial curing)
- This GOOD article references a study that found more nitrites in the alternative bacon than in traditional. Unfortunately it is not available without a subscription (I think I actually remember reading that article which is probably why I made my original post, but my paper-subscription to Cooks Illustrated does not include online access).
Hope some of this answers your questions (or points you in the right direction if you have journal access). My takeaway from it all is that it really doesn't matter. There is so little of it present in cured meats compared to other foods that are never even questioned that it seems like a total red-herring used to sell one brand over another (like

It would be maximizing ROI if...
In an economy where market failures such as negative externalities are corrected, Apple is already doing the sort of thing that any company would do to maximize ROI. The problem is that conservative organizations such as the NCPPR tend not to believe in externalities, probably because it conflicts with their ideology that the Earth is not warming or that humans are not the cause of it.
It's ironic that the NCPPR bring up ROI when they bash a $68.4 billion train project that would provide the same transportation capacity as $158 billion spent on roads and airports. What this and their meddling in Apple's affairs tells us is that they aren't truly interested in ROI but in supporting Big Oil and opposing anything that competes with burning dirty, nonrenewable fuels. This also explains why they don't believe in anthropogenic global warming. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!" Based on the email address and the info on the blog, it puts you right in dense Los Angeles suburbia.
The email address is my school. I live in West Los Angeles, but in a house built in 1946 that is and pretty far from my C. O. That being said, they may be lying about the distance and old wires -- it may be that they have under-provisioned the C. O.or backhaul. I don't trust them any more than I trust TWC. It would be nice if there were some viable competition. Maybe Google Fiber some day -- LA is shopping around for a municipal network partner -- but even Google may become "Comcastic" at some point.

- Cities in Africa have had TVs for decades, generate their own "e-waste". Nigeria had 6.9M households with TV in 2007 (World Bank)
- According to the UN, the 6B people in "emerging markets" generate far more e-waste, and far more ewaste trade, than OECD nations.
- African importers have no financial interest in paying to import junk.
- UNEP studies of seized "e-waste" in Lagos and Accra found 91% reuse and repair, better than brand new sales.
- The Western Accuser (BAN.org) earns money from "certifying" that recyclers don't export, has a $$ interest in the accusations
The Western Accuser admits to fabricating the statistics about 80% e-waste exports. They lied and admit they lied. http://retroworks.blogspot.com...
These stories belittle the techs in Africa who tinker and repair, for financial gain among manufacturers intent on "planned obsolescence". "Parasites of the poor" is the label for these stories in Africa.

Re:Freebreeze to the rescue
Seriously, what about the polar vortex don't you understand?
Probably just as much as the global warming alarmists do, seeing as they predicted the opposite result before it happened, but of course are now claiming that they knew all along that this was a possibility. That assertion has been thoroughly debunked, by many actual scientists, but that doesn't stop anti-science people like you from making your specious claims to support your ideological agenda.

And of course anyone who has had their credit card copied (they don't even steal them nowadays) you will know that a merchant will process transactions even without having your name.

Re:Mod parent way the hell UP
No.
A landlord can't give consent for the police to search a space that you have rented for your exclusive use. They can enter without your consent in case of an emergency (fire, gas leak, water leak, etc), but a simple request by the police to search is not an emergency. Some easy to read sources.
Do note however, as a private actor, a landlord entering your unit legally (or even illegally, but then they would risk being subject to civil and/or criminal consequences for the entry), can observe that you've got a meth lab inside, go to the police and tell them this, and the police can probably easily get a warrant to search because they now have cause. Actually, even if the landlord took (i.e., stole) something of yours from your apartment (such as a gun used in a murder), they can turn it over to the police and it can be used as evidence against you (again, they would risk being subject to civil and/or criminal consequences for the theft). However, these actions on your landlord's part can not be done in coordination with the police. The Fourth Amendment only restricts law enforcement, not private actors.

Re:Rise of VMs and failure of the OS
I agree to some extent. But today's mass-market PC hardware may not be the platform for a microkernel revival.
And as Rutkowska points out, an OS like Qubes can play both hypervisor and microkernel roles, and throw in extras such as isolating you from compromised hardware devices.

Re:Vive le Galt!
Waiting for the libertarians here to demonstrate why this shows how Bitcoin is such a wonderful idea.
Actually, there are quite a few prominant libertarians who have argued against it...

Dr. David R Criswell and ShimizuActually, lunar-based solar power for Earth is decades old, and was first patented by Dr. David R. Criswell in the late 80s. I was working for Dr. Criswell at the California Space Institute in La Jolla in 1985 while he was developing this idea so I know it goes back at least to the mid 80s.
Shimizu Corporation intersects with Dr. Criswell in another way that I just discovered today after searching for his more recent patents.
We've got to attract technological civilization's population away from natural ecosystems into idealized artificial environments such as Shimizu Corporation's design for what it calls the "Green Float". You can house the entire population of civilization in beach-front property on the boundary of a tropical rain forest where people can swim, fish, hunt and gather recreationally, as well as access the height of urban lifestyle. From there space habitats are likely to emerge so that the natural propensity of these "cells" to replicate endlessly needn't destroy Earth's biosphere. Interestingly, I came up with a geometry that looks very similar to that years ago, with the Solar Updraft Tower Algae Biosphere proforma and, over the subsequent years, I found a floating photobioreactor technology that requires little more than 2 layers of polyfilm that has demonstrated production per cost figures far in excess of what I projected in that proforma. Before I ran across Shimizu Corp's Green Float I had further refined the idea based on the Atmospheric Vortex Engine, which, like Shimizu's "Green Float", is ideally sited in the equatorial doldrums and could make use of the central tower of the Green Float. I posted some preliminary thoughts over at the Seastead Institute's blog.
A key problem I attempted to address in my preliminary thoughts was the early market for energy from the Atmospheric Vortex Engines that would form the nuclei for Shimizu's Green Floats. A big problem was the fact that the electric power markets are thousands of miles away from the floating AVEs even if you could build on the order of a terawatt of oceanic power transmission lines thousands of miles long. Early markets are critical for attracting capital -- the lack of which renders such grandiose ideas "non-starters".
I had thought it would be very nice to have a microwave transmission technology that could dynamically switch the power distribution to achieve the holy grail of "dispatchable" power generation for peak loads, but wasn't aware, until just now, that Dr. Criswell's recent revision of his patent serves precisely that purpose.

Pretty sure the USAF knew
I thought the last of the C-123's that were used to spray Agent Orange were destroyed in 2010. I didn't RTFA, so I don't know if the planes in question are still in service.
