Fox News is awful at domestic politics because it was founded as a Republican partisan mouthpiece, and it is adequate at foreign affairs because a lot of Republicans work in government after Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, and Bush II and when they decide to leak information they will leak it to Fox News. Their domestic reporting lies, but their foreign reporting is merely slanted.

Reuters lies. Their foreign reporting regarding Israel is not merely slanted or packaged to make you believe what they want you to think, but they will completely make shit up to make you believe what they want you to think.

Know the biases of your news sources, to the individual reporter if possible and recognizing different degrees of bias, rather than rejecting one entire publisher out of hand and considering the others to be clean. Everybody is biased on some issue to some degree.

I think that this article's author has a really nice and ingenious plan, but I don't think we'll get political buy-in in time, and I don't think that it can be implemented on a large enough scale. (and as soon as we start sinking enough resources into carbon sequestration an methane destruction - and people PERCEIVE that those resources are causing them to lose their jobs or go hungry, or go without a vacation or a second car. . . they'll be marching in to destroy these machines).

Your citations will be appreciated as well. As for point 2, it is important to distinguish between those who go through the motions and those who truly believe someone is watching. It's also worth considering that the observations I noted may hold in cases where the threshold is something other than crime/not crime. Various rationalizations and sophistry might also be involved, particularly where the requirement of deep sincerity (and perhaps penance) to receive forgiveness and absolution through prayer has not been emphasized. Perhaps that is more important in the case of the adult mind.

On point 3, note that I do not claim that atheists cannot be ethical or moral. I am quite certain that it is possible. As for the relative likelihood of ethical behavior, it is worth considering that in a society where theism is the default, people who think more deeply about things will be over-represented amongst atheists and that such reflection likely has bearing on ethical behavior. The results might be much less pretty if atheism was the default.

I believe I've read elsewhere that he would have copped to a misdemeanor, but not a felony. I also read that Heyman refused to offer any plea that didn't include guilty on all felony counts.

But did you really just compare Aaron Swartz downloading material that you admit can be obtained for free pretty easily to Hans Reiser murdering his wife? Come on, Swartz didn't kill or injure anyone, and JSTOR wasn't asking for him to be prosecuted.

The only reason a six month plea bargain even appears reasonable is when it is juxtaposed to decades in prison. George Hotz did far more damage to Sony - they did try to sue him, unlike JSTOR - and Hotz did not have to plead guilty to anything for his deal, let alone labeled a felon and thrown in prison. It's a more reasonable analogy than Reiser, but Hotz is still very different.

And you also need to consider the problems associated with being a felon. Should Swartz have given up his right to defend himself with firearms for IP and MAC spoofing? The right to vote, in some states forever? Who would hire a man convicted of a dozen computer felonies?

There is no doubt in my mind that the prosecution was intentionally trying to make him plead out by massively trumping up charges. It was originally four felonies, later nine more were added. Again, JSTOR wasn't even asking for a lawsuit, and I haven't heard that MIT wanted to sue him either, so why were the prosecutors so eager to pin so many felonies on him?

Interestingly, Ortiz' office let some health care companies get away with doing some nasty things...and nobody had to plead guilty to anything, just some fines and settlements. Prescribing drugs only approved for adults to teens, putting the wrong drugs in the bottle, kickbacks for implanting medical devices unnecessarily...things that can actually injure someone...and not a single guilty plea? I would think what they did is far, far worse than what Swartz did. Using the technique of "trump up felony charges to force them to cop a plea" on a known suicide risk over a victimless crime is reckless, negligent, and unprofessional.

These used to be easy to create, the natural side product of having to have your film developed and printed.
Now you have to have special papers, Ink, a pretty good printer, and a lot of technical skill and patience to print them out at home.
Photo albums are actually harder to make today.

I disagree, strongly.

I just go to walmart.com and have them print the stuff out on their Fujifilm Digital Minilab Frontier 390.

And then I pick up the stuff sometime later, since I'm usually in there at least a couple of times a week for other stuff anyhow.

It's cheap, good, and the color silver-halide prints will last as long as any others made using the same chemical process.

In my perfect world, there would be a contest for a public graph algorithm that would calculate districts for minimal surface area.
The political knife fight would move initially to algorithm parameters, but then settle on making sure data inputs were not too thrashed. Such an algorithm would have a LOT of parameters, e.g. population, income &c. But it would happen in public.
