iPhone no longer exclusive to 1 vendor in Canada
Rogers had an exclusive deal to sell iPhones in Canada. Starting in November, Bell and Telus will also be selling iPhones.
Interestingly enough, Bell's existing network is CDMA, not GSM. Bell and Telus partnered to build a new HSPA network to compete with Rogers.

Re:That's bright!
Except the report does not say quite what you, or Martin Weiss says it does, i.e. the U.S. is doomed financially. What it says it, if current laws do not change the deficit situation will continue to worsen, and extrapolating that out far enough leads to dire consequences. Of course, laws change all the time. The daily Federal Register, which documents those changes, is typically hundreds of pages. Daily. Also, the notion that Congress and the president are doing nothing about this is a blatant lie. You can verify this very simply by going back to the CBO for their analysis of the Senate health plan Full details here.
The idea that the federal government is just sitting back doing nothing about the flow of credit/money from banks is also a lie. Pressure has been coming from many areas to re-institute responsible lending. It should not be news to anyone that an overabundance of credit has been extended over the past few years, so it should also not be surprising that those markets are contracting now. A decrease in outstanding credit/liabilities means, in part, that businesses and individuals are paying off debt, and incurring new debt at a less crazy pace. That's a sign of impending financial armageddon?
I don't get what is so much fun about spreading gloom and doom. Lots of you folks sure seem to like it, though.

Re:Performance is neither here nor there
Unless it's his office, he'll use what he's told. His IT department will administer the box, including anti virus, network permissions, rebuilding from an image if/when the hard disk dies etc. They're not going to spend 4 days downloading, installing and configuring random crap for every employee just so they can feel at home!
I wish I could do the same on my desktop in the office. Out of curiosity, why can't you? Are you stuck with a Windows only software package? (I'm not asking rhetorically. )[...]
I'll answer: it IS my office, but my partners are are all bread and butter "office" people (their worth lies elsewhere). I am stuck to office because our main information provider, Bloomberg , does not offer to laymen any alternative; the target machine is WIN XP SP3 ( which by itself is interesting), office 2003 and a browser. Via DDE, it's possible to link data to open office spreadsheets, but the main App is MS only.

Re:Out of context theator
SEC Proposes Ban on Allowing Stock Flash Orders (dated September 19th 2009)
Democratic Senators Charles Schumer and Ted Kaufman urged the commission to halt the practice, arguing frequent traders use technology to profit from access to information not available to retail investors.
Flash traders have direct connections to the NYSE exchange and pay large sums just for bandwidth to make sure the trades are almost real time. Goldman Sachs is a key participator in this.
That said, their trades often have no human interaction and generally are computers following trading algorithms only a block away from the exchange with a direct fiber line to the office. It would be impossible otherwise.
Some traders have been raising a stink over this, but generally the miliseconds do count.
From http://seekingalpha.com/article/150397-flash-trading-goldman-sachs-front-running-everyone-else
The maximum allowable time for a flash is 500 milliseconds, or half a second, although most of the markets flash routable orders for under 30 milliseconds.
Of course I don't know how the LSE handles flash trading or even wants it but I'm going to assume they need everything to be as real time as possible. You just don't hear the finacial firms complaining about the disparities simply because they have the money to set up the transactions their servers pretty much next to the exchange itself (if not in the same building).

Israel more trustworthy than Iran?
"Israel deserves more trust than Iran? Are you serious?"
I don't know about him, but I am, absolutely.
"Iran has not, in recent military history, conducted a single war of aggression against its neighbours
No, they've been smart enough to let terrorist proxy groups like Hezbollah do it for them, groups funded, trained, and equipped by Iran. And taking over an embassy is considered an act of war. And I was in the area when they unilaterally tried to cut off traffic in the Persian Gulf, and one of their mines almost sank the U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts. No, no aggression against other states there.
For all of its history, most of Israel's neighbors have denied its right to exist, and sworn to push them into the sea. They've attacked them literally since the day the Jewish state was founded. After several failed invasions, Jordan and Egypt now have peace treaties with Israel that recognize her right to exist. There's been no wars with those countries since then. Syria, however, tired of losing to Israel in conventional warfare, conquered Lebanon and made it a vassal state... which it has stayed, from one degree to another ever since... and continues to launch attacks on Israel from that territory, using its terrorist proxies to do the dirty work. Want to keep Israel out of Lebanon? Keep Syria out of Lebanon.
Israel, on the other hand, have no such doctrine, and history demonstrates they have adopted a first strike policy.
Considering that in every major war, Israel was invaded by surrounding states, you honestly think this is bad? Are you going to seriously make the argument that taking out Saddam Hussein's nuclear facilities (which were going to produce weapons-grade material) wasn't a smart thing to do?
Iran has been co-operating with the IAEA - not flawlessly, and there are problems, but they have been co-operating.
Yeah, they've been cooperating so closely that they built a second uranium enrichment facility that stayed secret until now.
Iran does not deny the holocaust took place

Meanwhile, CA unemployment is at 12.2% and rising
While the California government overlords spend their people's time and money worrying about a few watts of electricity, the unemployment rate in California hit 12.2% and continues to rise. The San Joaquin valley continues to suffer under a drought, but the water that would normally be used to irrigate the crops is being used to protect an endangered minnow. This has resulted in nearly 40% unemployment in some agricultural communities and will lead to higher food prices for produce across the US -- yet another burden heaped on poor and middle class families.
But they have lots of time to force you to buy more expensive TVs in order to save a couple of watts of electricity.
Maybe Californians (who are not part of the elite, effete ruling class) should consider getting out while they still have something left to bring with them.

Re:So what you're saying is...
So essentially the government is paying auto manufacturers to send lobbyists back to washington to lobby on behalf of the auto manufacturers which Washington actually owns?
GM and Chrysler are partially owned by the US Government aka us. They were split up between the unions, bondholders, and the Government. As you can see from the Bloomberg article, the percentages are still in the air for GM and I assume for Chrysler too. Chrysler I find really disgusting considering it's the second time that that shit company has been bailed out. It needs to die. The same for GM.
You just know that they'll continue with their crap and it'll get worse because they pretty much have a Government mandate to do it. They will produce crap and with the whole warranty thing - no thank you! I'll buy Japanese. Any bailout money that came out of my taxes I consider to be a sunk cost and it's gone forever. I'll buy Japanese next time.

Re:Nuclear power is green power
It escapes into the environment all the time.
Sure, but compare the number of people impacted by every civilian radiation accident, and the fact that nuclear power plants produce less than 1% of what's released by a coal power plant.
I'd say it's you that's failing to understand this. At current usage rates we have about 40 years worth. We can get more, a lot more, but only at dramatically increased prices. Nuclear power is already too expensive, driving up fuel costs will make it worse.
They say the same thing about oil, and yet reserves keep turning up. And as far as being "too expensive", they're so low right now that people aren't even considering opening new mines, let alone doing surveys for them. The price is so low that the market is in danger of driving producers of it out of business! The fuel cost of a nuclear reactor is less than half of the cost of coal by weight alone. The main reason nuclear power is more expensive than coal is regulatory and decommissioning costs -- not a fault of the technology but the political environment.
The rise in price over the last couple of years has already resulted in plants being scaled back and expansion plans ending all over the place.
False. There's a price slump in the market right now.
I'm sure the Ukrainians would dispute that "fact".
They tend to dispute a lot of things. That doesn't make them right.
I'm a supporter of nuclear power, in general. You're whitewashing of its very real problems, and your willingness to demonize and simply write off its opponents, does nothing for your argument. "hysterical opponents"? Really now.
You're quite right -- they're not hysterical opponents, they're uneducated as you've just proven.

Cost of capital in the US
You were questioning the 8% cost of capital, here is a recent example of a utility paying 6.7% for 30 year bonds.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601203&sid=a8gdNh70aH5k
Since my example had no profit for the utility, we can assume the 1.3% between the 6.7% and the 8% used in the example is the profit for the utility.
8% seems spot on to me. Am I missing something here?

Re:Hrmm
Sure.
But the US Gov and banks can and do borrow from the US Federal Reserve. This can cause inflation (and thus the "taxation effect" I was talking about).
The US people can still experience a net benefit if the US Gov pumps enough of that money to them (directly or to projects that benefit the people).
But they should be careful if certain things happen like: the US borrows money from China etc, then lends a lot of money to an undisclosed bunch.
That benefits that undisclosed bunch. Are that undisclosed bunch "The People of the United States"?
When I last checked the Federal Reserve refused to say who they lent billions or even trillions to.

Quoting Wikipedia does your case little to no good really. A credible source would be better. (-:
This is the statement of a coward. Please find a link to refute the information I provided. Wikipedia is an excellent source of information about political spectrum, and a load of other things. Please find another place you find more credible if you wish to dispute the information. Is there some part you want to refute? Is the entry incorrect somewhere? Oh, you can't be bothered to write what you thought was incorrect can you? To any reasonable person the definition is correct and stands.
By any sensible standards-even US ones-he is not [a Marxist]
Why not read what Marxism is all about before you say someone IS or ISN'T a Marxist. Since Marx is the father of socialism it's not a stretch of any sort to call a socialist a Marxist. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism
Socialism refers to various theories of economic organization advocating state, public or common worker (e.g. through cooperatives) ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equal access to resources for all individuals with an egalitarian method of compensation.
Sounds like social security, Medicare, Medicaid. Most recently GM, AIG, Fanny and Freddy were already government owned and controlled, I mean the list goes on and on - I don't know what you would call those programs, but they sure fit the definition above for me! So yes, advancing the socialist programs and ideas in this country will get you labeled a socialist and yes, even if you wish it weren't so: socialist = Marxist. It's like calling a Libertarian a Conservative or a Communist a Liberal or a Catholic a Christian or a Sunni a Muslim, I can think of more examples but you get the point I think.
I just designed a better fighter than the F22 Raptor on the back of an envelope.
The F-22 was actually made by a private company. And Obama shit canned the project so now we only have a few dozen F-22 (whatever was in production) calling it "wasteful government spending" meanwhile we bailed out AIG for more than 7700 billion dollers, wow that would buy us (138M/77000M=557) 557 new F-22's!!!! Oh, and the money we gave AIG is all gone! but don't worry, every one of those IOU's is good.
Was not the previous US administration the most statist in living memory, you remember Bush don't you? I thought he was a bit right wing what?
He was not considered a bit right wing, he wasn't considered right wing at all! GWB is off to the left of JFK! My god man, Bush spent more on the African AIDS fight and federal education than all his predisesors put together. He signed off on the $700B TARP legislation. Bush is not "right wing" by any strech of the imagination. Maybe you can point out something he did that you consider "right wing" before you go throwing the statement around. The only people who considered him "right wing" are people who are so far out on the lunatic fringe of the left that Ted Kennedy looks "right wing".
In just a few minutes I could have saved the allies heaps of effort and resources by doing the entire Manhattan project in my kitchen.

Re:Free speech and democracy?
No, I think "parody" in this case would mean it was a commentary on the Time copyright image (which it isn't), rather than the President himself (which is what it actually is). A similar case would be the Obama red/blue "Hope" image - the guy who created it (or derived it, if you will) was sued by the AP which holds the copyright.

Re:Come on GM, at least make the lie BELIEVABLE
"As stated in the summary, that's the EPA's rating, not GM's rating."
It is the new system that GM lobbied the EPA for and worked with the EPA to achieve. While the EPA shares some blame GM was the driver. Clearly GM was looking for a measurement that produced big numbers.
Here is the story about it from last year, clearly a harbinger of what was to come.
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a2GgcMQbsIcU&refer=us -
Re:Makes the EPA even more of a bad joke.
Here is more background on GMs push for this kind of rating:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a2GgcMQbsIcU&refer=us
"General Motors Corp. said it reached a preliminary agreement that clears the way for U.S. regulators to certify the Chevrolet Volt, an electric vehicle that can be recharged at home or with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine, as the first 100 mile-per-gallon car."
When I read this article last year it sounded like GM was pushing forward this kind of nonsense measurement. Sound like a coup for GM.
-
Re:Vaporwareshould be available by 2010 according to this morning news.
From Bloomberg's article on this (here):GM has offered its own caution about the risk associated with the Volt. The model "has not yet proven to be commercially viable," according to a regulatory filing last week. The technology required to power the car may not be developed in time for its planned 2010 debut, the automaker said.
Might be available next year - might not be commercially viable - not done developing the technology yet... Ah, good old GM.

Cohen can explain this, and you can verify it
Cohen is a jew so have him explain this something below and you can verify it yourself from their talmud:
http://groups.google.com/group/soc.men/browse_thread/thread/2385ab653d66252/6cc421202f854b7b
1. Sanhedrin 59a: "Murdering Goyim (Gentiles) is like killing a wild
animal."2. Aboda Sarah 37a: "A Gentile girl who is three years old can be
violated."3. Yebamoth 11b: "Sexual intercourse with a little girl is permitted
if she is three years of age."4. Abodah Zara 26b: "Even the best of the Gentiles should be killed."
5. Yebamoth 98a: "All gentile children are animals."
The above is compounded moreso by Bernie Madoff and the ponzi schemes in the hedgefund scandals and you can top that off w/ the Jew Rabbis in New Jersey being caught laundering monies this week too here http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=agHjKddhC2TE and in case you don't know it, if you are a non-jew you are considered a "goyim" or "gentile" by them and that makes you nothing more than cattle and animals to them per their own talmud. Something to consider.

Re:Giving away taxpayer money causes inflation.
Not only are the bread and cirsuses bad for the citizens, they also serve to drive money into foreign hands: see http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601080&sid=aEwSvegJFgsw
The so-called cash-for-clunkers program raised overall sales to the highest level this year and slowed Toyota's decline to 11 percent, compared with June's 32 percent drop.
Loved the write-up, with one nit: please always use "all other things being equal"; the "other" is very important, because otherwise it's a nonsense statement -- everyone can plainly see that all things are not equal. The term stems from the good science technique: "we change this one variable, and leave all other things equal, and see what result we get." Debugging, basically.

Re:proportionality
How about a court judgement of $873 million for spamming users of Facebook?. $873 MILLION! That seems pretty high, since one could argue that spamming is "victimless" too. So the ITs at the ISPs have to do some extra work on their filtering software, and when they don't, people might have to delete a few emails, big deal. Some people might actually want to read the advertisements and click through the links.
Now, before you disagree, picture this: a parallel universe Slashdot-like forum, where 49 out of 50 posters are busy coming up with all sorts of arguments why spamming is victimless and companies like Facebook are the massive, greedy, incompetent ones. And when you post a dissenting opinion, you get modded down so yours never sees the light of day.

Re:1588v2 aka Precision Time Protocol Version 2No. The point is that they inserted them selves between a buyer and a seller to collect the difference rather than letting the buyer and seller capture the marginal benefit of market exchange.
If Ebay allowed a third party to secretly bid and resell to capture the difference between a sellers reserve price, and the top buyers maximum bid, do you think that would be fair? It's called front running and it's illegal, unless you've been given regulatory dispensation, which the SLPs have been. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_running
Maybe that's why wild senator firebrand Schumer informed the SEC that if they didn't stop it 'flashing', there would be a law to make the current method and practice more explicitly illegal. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=ajcRCWFi5MLs
Interesting... what are the Supplemental Liquidity Providers, except for privileged powerful wealthy day-traders? Why do they deserve a 1% cut of every trade on every fast moving stock? This is in addition to the commission that you pay. Why are monopoly interests PAID 0.15 to 0.25 cents for every trade by the exchange for stocks above $1? This preserves the illusion of liquidity, but note that its less than the 0.35 cents actual DMM (designated market makers) get for taking real risk. Why are they given preferential sub second looks at others prices, and paid to trade in smaller blocks at lower latency than anyone else? Couldn't all bids and asks just be available to everyone for 1 outrageously full second so that the field was level? Why do the big firms trade in "Dark Pools" for exactly this reason? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_pools
The volume of SLP trading has grown significantly in just the last few months to the point where Goldman is responsible for some 20-30% of all trades on the NYSE (not in a single name... all trades) and almost are done for themselves (principal) rather than for others (agency). http://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/7.13.09.jpg You don't think this moves markets? Do you think they're trading leveraged?
"In any event, positive-feedback trading is likely to increase volatility substantially. If one wants to design regulatory interventions that will decrease volatility, one must think about measures that will discourage positive-feedback trading rather than negative-feedback trading. Positive-feedback trading is substantially discouraged when traders using that strategy suffer massive losses, which is what one observed after the crash. Everyone who had been pursuing positive-feedback strategies bought more and more as the market went higher and higher, thinking that their portfolio insurance would enable them to get out. They were wrong. It's clear that the crash reduced volatility by reducing the attractiveness of positive-feedback trading." Larry Summers Previous Treasury Sec in 1988

Barry Diller track record
Let's look at the record of Barry Diller companies.
- Home Shopping Network. Infomercial channel. Did OK.
- Ticketmaster Bought up competitors. Achieved near-monopoly. Raised prices. Did very well.
- Expedia Travel agency. Leader in field.
- Lending Tree Mortgage loans. Sold off after losses.
- Interval International Time-share condos. Sold off from IAC in 2008.
- Ask.com Search engine. Market share near zero.
- Rushmoredrive.com Niche search engine for black people. Ceased operations a few weeks ago.
So you can see where Diller is coming from. His ad-based businesses have been disasters, while his transaction-charge businesses have done well. (Lending Tree had some bad years because they speculated in mortgages, instead of just brokering them.)

It's not just network speed
I know some of the people doing this work, and they really trade in nanoseconds and clock cycles.
Some of the things relevant:
- level 3 switching, routing is out for these speeds
- performance measuring has a heavy impact on throughput and is thus rarely done
- they use mysql as postgresql appears to able to keep up
- market data processors run Linux
- doing it right means a full factor difference in speed, I believe this means an algo fed by this can acquire data, analyse it and post a trade before others even see the dataIt's fascinating stuff.

Someone 'stole' some GS software - the GS lawyer said "The bank has raised the possibility that there is a danger that somebody who knew how to use this program could use it to manipulate markets in unfair ways,"
If someone who knew how to use the software could manipulate the market, why wouldn't that someone be GS - after all money is money, the end justifies the means and all that.

Re:UK Law is not unclear
You miss GP's point. The problem isn't that UK will extradite people to Iran (it doesn't). The problem is that UK will extradite people to US, because US demanded that, and a corresponding treaty was signed; however, US will still not extradite people to UK. That's where the hypocrisy is
.There is no policy that "the UK will extradite people to the US" or "the US will not extradite people to the UK". Extradition treaties have all sorts of provisos and lots of executive discretion.
Extradition is not about arrogant countries forcing others to enforce their laws. (At least, no more than any international agreements are coercive.) It's about countries that are friendly and cooperative working together to allow crimes to be prosecuted by the country that was most affected. America doesn't and can't force any country to extradite anyone. I can guarantee you that Iran doesn't extradite to America any more than the reverse.
The UK does not always extradite to the US. Look at David Carruthers or Peter Dicks. Both are UK citizens, whom the US wanted to prosecute for violating US law. How did the US do so? By arresting them when they entered the US. They weren't extradited — probably because the UK would have refused, since they did nothing that was illegal in the UK. By the same token, as far as I know, the UK will not extradite anyone who might be subject to capital punishment.
On the other hand, the US sure does extradite to the UK. We have an extradition treaty that we're required to comply with. If maybe the terms differ between the US and the UK (do they?), well, that's politics for you. When you have to compromise over a range of issues, the result isn't likely going to look perfectly coherent on any specific issue. If the UK was more generous with extradition, it probably got some other concession from the US in exchange.

Bank of America Credit-Card Charge-Offs Reach 14%
I bet this didn't include ~12-13,000 x $2.3 x 10^16 in charge-offs. What's that in percentage terms I wonder?

Re:Oh, I don't know, but
Rather convenient that you leave out the part where the ice is thickening due to increased precipitation - brought on by warmer temperatures.
Even when the climate change ostriches get something right, they're still wrong:
In 2003, 62 percent of the ocean's ice cover was older, thicker ice, with 38 percent in seasonal layers, the researchers found. Five years later, 68 percent of the ice cap was made up of seasonal ice.

Re:Kudos to them
at least Toyota banks mad cash on their prius in the mean time.
Actually, that's sort of the problem for Toyota. They got hit with a patent judgment over their hybrid vehicles in eastern Texas a couple of years ago. The plaintiff was awarded nearly $100 a vehicle as an on-going royalty (which is about 17% of Toyota's relatively slim profit margin).
So I agree. Kudos to Toyota for playing the game like it should be played. They got hit pretty hard and they needed to fight fire with fire. Good for them.
