Anyways..what I don't get....I work for a government agency...our mail list has some 70,000 people in it......not to mention how many of those 70,000 have their own lists. Now first Melissa was out there, that was no problem for us because we were using CC Mail, after Melissa..our whole agency goes and switches to Outlook? umm.......explain the rationale behind this......? I say more viruses like this need to be spread around so some people will actually start using the gray matter between their heads....and why the fuck would you run an executable on your system if it seems so suspicious?
I don't know about the rest of you but I'll be glad when "god" (our main sysadmin that thinks he's right) sees his servers come to a halt and everything goes haywire..and I'll be there laughing my ass of at him....dunno. I haven't received this virus yet.. :( but since we have the "source code" to it..I say we modify it to read something else.not "i love you" but.let's say..... "m$ sucks linux rocks" or something...and start mass mailing the M$ morons. :)

A few notes on Dragonball Z:

The original show's target audience was in the 12-14 year old male demographic. FUNimation's rape...er, English dub I mean, is what dumbs the show down to 8-year-old level.

It's well worth it to invest in some fansub tapes to see the show in its original form. A few advantages of the fansubbed episodes:

Freezer is not an 80-year-old woman with emphysema
Kuririn is actually a cool character!
Muten Roshi actually is a dirty old man, and cops a feel whenever he can on any of the female characters
none of that "the next dimension!" crap; people actually die in the original version
Episode 125 (although this will be dubbed soon, Funi will probably screw it up) Chichi forces Son Gokuu and Piccolo to take driving lessons--hysterically funny!
Well-written and well-placed background music, none of that idiotic meandering synth music that they put in the dub!

Obviously only a partial list, but if you want to see what you're missing in the dub, check out Chris Psaros' DBZ Uncensored!

Anyway, if you don't feel like waiting for some college kid in Nebraska to get around to mailing you some tapes, you can download episodes at Da Black Goku or at DALnet #dbzleech.

Well...correct me if I'm wrong...but lets say we do create a GeekNet (whatever u wann call it) and before anyone tries to access it we put up a main page that says...to access this net you have to be at least 150 years old and reside on the planet mars (something impossilbe/stupid)...I've seen warez/underground sites that have this as their disclaimer....now if let's say the MPAA went into our site illegally because they don't reside on mars......can they still sue us? Why not put the DeCCS code (whatever u want) behind one of these sites.....talk to a lawyer....they'll be able to come up with something.....now will this work or not?

Going along the same lines......this is old news....It's possible to take any DVD player...hook it up to ur TV and then take a VCR and hook it up to your TV's out jacks...and there u have it...u can watch and record the movie at the same time..very easy to do..I don't see why DeCCS what such a big issue also....just like jeff said up there.....take a video card for ur PC and loop that back to your TV or VCR and record the movie...no big deal whatsoever..I bought a DVD player for my PC and a decoder card..and since I have my Tv in my room I just connect the two and watch the movie from my PC.......as far as I can tell a DVD player and a PC DVD player...same difference.

The only way I see how this made news.....is you people on /. don't think much do you?

I run the site PHS Sucks, which I set up to criticize the administration at my high school. I put up some posters in the school, and the result has been that the administration is trying to hunt me down. I have heard from students who have heard from teachers, and one with direct knowledge of the administration, that I am a high priority.

I have been able to remain anonymous thus far, and while some have criticized me for doing so, I think it's the only safe thing for now.

The school administration should not be able to punish students for using their free speech to criticize the school. But they do, and while the student may be able to win in court eventually, that is something no one wants to go through.

Anyway, to any other high school students out there contemplating setting up a website, I say go for it. You may want to remain anonymous for safety though. In any case, I would highly recommend making it abundantly clear that if the administration tries to retaliate in any way, you will also. The last thing the principal wants is your URL on the front page of your local paper, or on huge signs around the town. If they know you won't give up, they may think twice before giving you some Draconian punishment.

Each tester received a version that had their email address encoded within the executable and they were informed of this Anyone with a bit of knowledge would fire up dos debug or a hex editor.......and change the e-mail address to something else.....not hard to do.... :)
I remeber doing this to change a program's name..... that was always fun :)

Hm. Although I am neither a lawyer nor a license guru, this seems quite similar to the BSD license. Note the obnoxious advertising clause.

Also, it seems to share a number of RMS's requirements, such as the patent issue. From MS's license:

a. Patents. Any patent obtained by a redistributor of the Program must be licensed for everyone's free use or not licensed at all.

This is quite interesting. I suspect this license would fall under the open source guidelines, and quite possibly qualify as Free Software as well.

Is this a first from Microsoft? Does this mark a quiet change in strategy, or are they just making sure that they can avoid any legal issues? I suspect government contracts might have provisions against the use of proprietary stuff. Or they should, not that that's stopped the people in my school district... They seem to enjoy locking students into only using Word or some such.

a Root account in an OS almost ALWAYS leads to security holes. Umm......doesn't Win 9x/BeOS always run in "root"? hence anyone with access to it........can do whatever s/he wants? Actually, it's not a theory, it's Einstein -Podolsky-Rosen, which was recently proved as a law of quantum mechanics with a neat little experiment...
In a nutshell, EPR implies that in an entangled state, certain particles would seem to violate local reality by "agreeing" on their quantum state, with no perceptible particle exchange (which means it's not limited by the speed of light), even when separated by great distances.

The problem is, for now, that we have no way of predetermining quantum states in entangled pairs, meaning we can't yet use it for FTL data transmission. But it is the principle behind quantum teleportation, which is unspeakably cool.

(I'll split the files into.oh..5MB's each) Haven't seen this used like this before...but i'm sure some warez group is bound to think this up...Now the problem with Gnutella isn't going to be really mp3's but warez. A warez group could say...i'll have this up on monday.....and everyone from college will be download win2k or the like? Just my thoughts

Sadly, it seems to be difficult to find good CS teachers and classes. At my school, the network admin/CS teacher was the head of the math department. At least in this case, math != CS.

A friend of mine was taking C++ from her. First, they skipped C entirely, and everything was taught with iostream etc. Meaning although all they were doing for the first semester was very very basic C stuff, they won't be able to understand even the most basic C program that uses printf etc.

Secondly, she seemed to think that the only purpose of software was to Solve Important Mathematical Questions Over and Over Again (tm). Although Algebra II was not required to be in that class, most of the problems involved such things as finding roots of polynomials. No actual algorithms, just trivial little tasks with no concept of what they were learning.

Also, her code was UGLY. I forget the details, but suffice it to say that I still have nightmares about it. =)

I only saw info from her class based on my friend's homework, so I may be getting an unfair impression, but she also ran the school network and computer systems, which have decidedly low performance and were installed in a rather interesting way.

I think the main problem is the tiny budgets schools are given forces them to press people who aren't neccessarily the best for the job into teaching classes that they perhaps shouldn't. Witness the constant miscasting of math teachers into CS teachers. Plus schools' general ignorance of computer-based stuff in general.

Umm, if you've got more than one computer, leave Windows into one of them if only for the sake of running Cubase or Logic Audio or whatever in it. Linux audio software isn't yet up to those of Windows, but they're slowly getting there.

Most of the audio software I've tried are in their very early stages of development. There are a couple of relatively decent MIDI packages around (such as Brahms, aka. "ex-koobase"), but for those of us dealing with samples, the situation does not seem so bright. Crashes and unexpected weirdness is not uncommon. But that's acceptable for software still in development!

However, there are a couple of real jewels (for the bedroom music enthusiast) emerging, mainly terminatorX and soundtracker. IMO they both need no-compromise stereo sample support (mono as of 3.55 and 0.3.10 respectively), and Soundtracker should get rid of that horrible "pitchbender" gizmo. and improve the sound quality instead... I like terminatorX because the user interface is very intuitive. You can just blast away and make music without having to conduct The Ceremony of Ye Olde Premeditated Scripting Of Obscure Syntax. I'm not a person who can spend one week thinking about some strange way to make the program put my inspiration into audio form. So the interface has to be wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

What Linux needs is a Gimp for audio. That would really be a killer app. Still, things are looking bright. Bump around the Sound and MIDI Software for Linux site and you'll not only see glimpses of the future but might come across some pleasant surprises to adopt as well!

Look at /. they have banners. I don't have to click the banners, but i could also find a way to turn them off. But if I did that, as well as others, the advertisers would stop giving them money.

I will not be "shamed" into watching advertisements - I don't accept the argument. I have an advertising filter that blocks about 90% of Slashdot ads (about 90% of all web ads). I have not agreed to anything that would force me to look at (or rather, not block) these ads - therefore I have a perfect right to filter /.'s pages any damn way I want to.

However, in the case of the free PC I believe there's a clause in the agreement that says you will specifically not bypass the advertising. This is a whole different kettle of fish. Breaching that agreement means that you've gone against the contract you've signed. The company is then able to inact whatever penalties they've put in place.

Advertising is a crap shoot. Companies know that click through rates for Web ads are about 0.02%. But take the millions of people that are supposed to be on the 'Net and that's a large number of people on high profile sites.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not promoting any form of "theft" (as a previous poster mentioned), in fact I consider myself a patron in the old sense of someone who supports people, products or services they enjoy. I have no problems tossing money at a worthy product, and I'm very willing to risk more money, more often on things I believe to be a Good Idea. However, this lowest common denominator saturation adverting gives me the shits.

Well, I actually *tried* using CSS in one of my homepages, and boy it sucked. You can't be sure wether your snazzy background image for that TD element will be rendered or not (with Netscape, it was not).

I *hate* webs that forbid non- Flash users from navigating them. But look, if we coded our pages like some of the people here wish, we would get Eric S. Raymond's website.

And frankly, it *sucks*. Wonderful content, but a horrible design.

Look, 95% of today's web design is made with tables. I *know* it looks like hell in text browsers, but I think the web is a visual medium. And if a browser can't render a perfectly valid HTML 2.0 element... dump it.

My latest website's splash page tries to resemble a Japanese nishiki-e painting. If I added a text navigation the whole point would be missed, but all the links are scrupulously ALT tagged. The table formatting in the content pages can be a bit funny, but hey, I want it to look *good* in any browser, even Mosaic. All the information is textual, images are only used to *add* feeling, not to *provide content*.

Honestly, I think this should suffice. If anyone wants to check it, do it.

in the past, i've used a program (on windoze) that was basically a client-side proxy which allowed regexps to be run against the html coming in as well as headers going in and out.

basically, set the browser proxy to localhost and everything gets sent through this program sitting in the system tray. it even allows configuration for use of multiple proxies which can be switched between with a few clicks.

the version i've got came pre-configured for a whole bunch of java-script related stuff (all with great names...):

Banner Blaster
OnUnload unloader
Embeded MIDI Silencer
Kill all Popup Windows
etc.

If you're using a Win32 you could try Proxomitron. It's a client-side proxy that filters HTML as you browse. You can create text matching rules to selectively filter HTML tags or JavaScript commands.

Sorry `bout this being AC but I've forgotten my login - I'm terrible with names, even my own :)

Anyway, I've repeatedly seen people complain that they can't get a DN cause someone else has registered it and this has led me to do a little research into DNS - not a lot, just a little, I'm still a newbie :)

Ok, let's say you want neuron.net but some git's nicked it.
" Fine," you say (probably with swearing and complaining) and go without.

You do some hunting and find a service that provides third level domain name redirection so that you can have your domain name, it just looks a little odd.

I did that. I looked for neuron.net (taken) so I hunted around and found a redirect service.
So, instead of my address being what I wanted, it's http://www.neuron.cjb.net.
It's a shameless plug I know :)

But what about DNS? I couldn't believe that the software running the DNS was restricted to .com, .net and .org, plus the numerous country codes, so I did a little reading.
GOOD LORD!! You can assign any domain name!
The first thing that came to mind was The Egg in ShadowRun, the Internetwork that runs alongside the Matrix (and yes the game came before the movie) but is not of the Matrix.
Two Internetworks using the same software and standards running alongside each other, connected but not dependant.
The Matrix goes down and a few nodes disappear from the Egg, and vice versa.

I think you can see where this is going, but if you can't i'll throw this idea into the arena and see what happens.
Let's start our own Internetwork, built by geeks for geeks and policed by all.
In the same way that telnet is apart of the Internet, we could start our own subnetwork system.

Good idea? Maybe. Possible? Definately.
Then maybe I could get my neuron.egg address. :)

If you happen to run windows9x/NT (like, at work) it might be worth checking out the proxomitron, which works just like IJB.

Apart form killing ads and cookies from selected sites you can kill most popup windows and other annoyances..
It's a bit trickier to config then ijb but comes with a good default setup

The "Opt-Out" option does not stop the ads from appearing on your screen, it stops the advertising company from tracking your details. The website still gets the revenue...

If you want to actually block the ads (on a windows PC), I recommend Proxomitron. Otherwise, Junkbusters. (or adding the appropriate domain blocking to Squid, if used.)

I'm the IT guy for a 50+ company. I use Proxomitron personally and I've blocked a number of advertising domains using the company proxy. I also have GIF animation turned off. All in all, I see few ads and even less advertising content. (You'd be surprised the effect just turning off GIF animation has....)

For IE, add advert sites to your 'Restricted Sites' zone, and then set that zone not to allow cookies.
