Re:Didn't see this one coming
Of course, in this case the software is licensed free of charge for everyone. I'd say that, and the fact that the base is all open source, does quite a bit to calm other manufacturers.
That's not strictly true though is it. It might be true for old versions, but Google might well withhold access to new versions. They've already done so with Honeycomb, releasing early to the parties of their choosing. And then there's this mysterious quote from Google : "According to Google, Microsoft did not ask permission before showing Stevenson the Android source code. [...] "The confidential source code improperly provided to Dr. Stevenson is highly proprietary source code that Google does not even share with its partners, such as Motorola," Google said."
-
Re:Finally
Open how? Free as in beer, or speech? I use them because they are free as in beer, and work well. I've used competing products, Hotmail, Yahoo, and they're stuck in geocities age.
Sorry, what part of Google is "free as in beer", exactly? Their search algorithms? Ad placement? Gmail? G+? GTalk? Android?
None of Google's significant properties are open. None. The emperor has no clothes. Here, chew on this:
A protective order in the case restricts access to the Android source code, limiting the number of people who can review the code and requiring that Microsoft and Motorola "give prior written notice" to Google before showing the source code to a technical advisor. Google is to have 10 days to object.
Microsoft did not do that, Google alleged, as it moved to prevent Stevenson from testifying at the evidentiary hearing slated for later this month.
"The confidential source code improperly provided to Dr. Stevenson is highly proprietary source code that Google does not even share with its partners, such as Motorola," Google said.
Code. Android. "Highly proprietary".
There are reasons to like Android, but "openness" is not one of them.

Re:Article overlooks the stupidly obvious
"It is speculated, mostly by tech pundits, that considering the sheer amount of effort that itâ(TM)s putting into shoving Chrome down our throats, it would not be in Googleâ(TM)s best interests to re-sign with Mozilla."
Most of Google's revenue comes from advertising, not Chrome. To ensure that revenue, they need to remain the number one search engine. To that end, it is in Google's best interest to remain the default search engine on Firefox as long as Firefox has any significant market share, regardless of Chrome's market share.
Another, slightly less obvious but equally important oversight/misunderstanding is Google's goals for Chrome. The article assumes that Google wants Chrome to displace Firefox and believes that not paying Mozilla would further that goal. But that's not what Chrome is for. Google has publicly stated on many occasions that their intent with Chrome is not to make it the universal browser, but to create competition. Not because the browser market lacked competition, but because the browser makers were not competing in the areas that Google wanted browsers to improve.
Specifically, when Chrome was first introduced, Google really wanted it to do one thing: Motivate browser makers to speed up Javascript engines. V8 was the reason for Chrome. See, Google wants the web to become the computing platform making the underlying OS irrelevant (with some success), but to do that the web has to be an adequate platform for doing all of the stuff that desktop apps do. And that requires fast Javascript execution, HTML5, etc. Had Chrome never broken the 1% marketshare mark but succeeded in convincing Mozilla, Microsoft, Apple, Opera, etc. to speed up their Javascript engines, Google would have considered Chrome a resounding success, even though pundits would have called it yet another Google failure.
Bottom line: Google likes Mozilla and Firefox, and not just for the search traffic sent to google.com -- though the revenue from that search traffic undoubtedly more than justifies the money Google spends. Google wants the web to become the platform, and truly cross-platform browsers like Firefox are important to that goal. In fact, to realize that goal, it's also important that Chrome not be the only browser. Google doesn't want the web to be "the Google platform", it wants the web to be "the platform". Because Google is convinced that it can outcompete anyone, given a standardized platform on which to compete. And, honestly, though many people will probably call me naive, or a shill, because Google thinks that making the underlying OS irrelevant is what's best for the world. Yes, that sort of idealism really is not only common, but the norm at Google.
(Disclaimer: I'm a software engineer at Google, but I don't work on Chrome, and with the exception of my comments on the ideology of people at Google, none of the above is any sort of inside information. It's all stuff I knew before joining the company.)

OpenIs this the same Google that has Android? The only phone OS that's open? the same Google that is now suing Microsoft for disclosing proprietary source code? Wait...how can that be possible if Android is open?
"The confidential source code improperly provided to Dr. Stevenson is highly proprietary source code that Google does not even share with its partners, such as Motorola," Google said.
They don't even share it with Motorola? This open thing, I don't get it.

Re:Responsibility of privacy
They understand the concept of confidentiality, what they completely lack is an understanding of the mosaic effect.
It's this bad: They could use the same username on a sex toy shopping site and a forum where they have links to their Facebook page. They'd write a review for the Tentacle Monster Dildo with Jizzing Action on the sex toy site, friend their boss on their Facebook page, and post pics of themselves doing bong rips on the forum. And see no problem with any of this whatsoever, because they don't see the big picture at all, just the individual pieces. Nothing short of posting their full contact details with an itemized list of things they're ashamed of on one publicly visible page would set off the Average Joe's alarm bells.

Re:These patent lawsuits are getting out of hand.
A few individual companies suing each other over patent disputes is one thing. When Apple is going out and suing ANYONE who has anything to do with an Android phone (which is raping the iPhone in sales and market share), that's using litigation over innovation.
An oldie but a goodie, this graphic should be updated but it shows the problem doesn't lie with Apple but with the general state of mobile computing at the moment. Everyone is suing everyone else, a side effect of mobile being the most competitive business out there at the moment (a good thing.) Apple is just more visible because everything they do is news, apparently.
As to Android "raping" Apple in marketshare, all Android manufacturers combined have 38% of the market while Apple by itself owns 27% of the market and a whopping 50% of the profits. That's a pretty comfortable position. Worst comes to worst, long term they end up with something resembling their mac marketshare now, another profitable business if not a cash-cow.
As for innovative products? I'm not sure what you're talking about when they make minor improvements to hardware without adding new features (usually - they did finally put a front facing camera on) and copying OS features from other mobile OS's..... I had an iPhone a couple years ago when it was the best and most innovative thing out there - now it's not, so I moved on.
That's the Apple Way(tm), great leap forward followed by incremental improvement. That's why they spent a decade tweaking the iPod and why you find people who don't get it bitching about the (perceived) lack of new features in OSX releases. What Apple don't do is feature bloat, in many cases they even prefer to cut rather than to add. Personally I like it but many don't, especially the more hardcore spec-obsessed geeks. Thing is, taking away things and improving the UI and user experience is also innovation. For an example look no further than Google Search's famously uncluttered interface which was innovative in its portal-riddled day (though possibly accidentally so.)
If Windows Phone 7 turns into the best mobile OS with the best hardware next year, I'll ditch Android for WP7. I'm not a fanboy - I go with who's producing the best product for the best price. Sadly, Apple fails on both counts - but I blame that on Lord Jobs arrogance in knowing that he can literally sell dog shit with an Apple sticker on it (iShit) and fanboys will pay hundreds of dollars for this (literally) useless piece of shit. Why innovate when your core customer base is so religiously devoted to you that they will always unquestionably buy anything you tell them to?
Saying you're not a fanboy (I really hate that word, it's the "nigger" of the geek world), and then spouting off nonsense like "Lord Jobs", "iShit", "religiously devoted", etc doesn't jive. Keep it rational and factual. You and I have a different idea of what makes up the ideal smartphone that's all. All these insults just confuse and inflame.

I have a brilliant idea!
I'm going to seek a $20k grant to advise police agencies against having their website developed by BJM marketing.

Re:It's Apple, it just works, think different
Me too. No infections with my Win 7 machine that I know of, with a little over a year experience. No sticky infections for my XP or Vista machines either, and I leave them up and networked all the time. Unlike many people using PCs and practically all people using Macs I keep them updated, and make sure that I have a working copy of an antivirus going at all times. But I use them strictly for business and I find it pretty easy to spot fake updates, and never install software and drivers unless I absolutely trust the source. I'm pretty paranoid. Most people seem to be trusting and hate UAC, and anything they perceive as slowing down their experience including AV software. So I wind up helping 6 or more people a month clean their Windows computers, some of these are Win 7, I don't seek this business, they track me down.
And yes, even users that do everything right still get infected. I get one of those every other month or so, with no attack vector I can find, other than zero day google ad exploits, through IE 8 or Firefox. And some people who I thought had compromised their system by turning off UAC, though they denied it, and I doubted their ability to figure out how, may not have been the blame after all.
Anyway, good move getting Win 7. I'm hoping to get everyone I know to get new machines with Win 7, that is those who don't want an iPad or Mac. Win 7 machines are much less trouble. Mac and IOS machines, are a bit better IMHO, zero trouble from malware, and lesser trouble of any other kind. Ironically the users if anything are less trained, and do absolutely nothing to protect themselves. So yes, maybe people need to be taught how to take care of their computers, or get one that doesn't require so much care.

Re:Obviously not the same
Are you SERIOUSLY that fucking deluded Lintroll? Can you not read or understand anything written unless it is posted as 'I heart lunix and suck teh cocks LOL!"? because I just fucking said MSFT DESERVED TO BE BUSTED FOR ANTITRUST you stupid RMS blowing lintroll, can't you fucking read? oh well i guess you just love being bitchslapped by some large southern manmeat, so once again i'll show what an absolute failure your OS is Enjoy and try not to drool on Linus's balls when you blow him, I hear he hates that.
Isn't it sad, how like a frightened child afraid to look under the bed, you cower at the truth? if your driver model isn't shit then why does Dell have to run their own repos even though we are talking a teeny tiny subset of hardware? Oh right because Linux shits itself and dies if you use the default repos! Man that is some excellent product you got there! you think I can get better QA than the third largest OEM on the planet? What, you expect me to tell paying customers "Go to the forum, kiss some loser ass, and maybe, just maybe, in a few days someone will have mercy and give you a big pile of bullshit that may or may not make your sound work again"?
Bleeding yet douchey? want some more? nice thing about having the truth on your side, you can keep throwing punches all day! How about how a decade old Windows beat the shit out of Linux on netbooks or how ASUS has given up on your bullshit or how about Walmart running away from linux as fast as it can? You got the crazy koolaid drunk enough to say they ALL are paid shills because they won't do your forum dance or CLI horseshit? Meanwhile your "hero" Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans!. Why don't you tell them that at work next week, see how quick you get a pink slip? More? How about you actually have the balls to celebrate getting a whole 1% market share while you are actually lower than JavaME and there is a whole website dedicated To your bullshit and excuses
.You see you whiny little delusional mama's boy, I'm your worst fucking nightmare...a retailer that still believes. I believe that the community doesn't have to take Torvalds shit sandwiches, I believe that things can be made better, I believe Linux can be something for more than douchebags like you that will happily take a cock slapping from linus as long as you can say you are sticking to "teh man". I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.

Re:This is why we can't have anything nice
I don't know about browser or email client, but Android phones have shipped that use Bing instead of Google, e.g., Motorola Citrus, Samsung I-400, and Samsung Fascinate.

Is Google Search a monopoly?
This entire proposal rests on the assumption that Google has a monopoly in search. Does it? The latest figures show Google Search has 63.6% of the market. What percentage of the desktop market did Microsoft have in the nineties when it decided to tie Windows and IE together (in violation of its 1994 settlement with the DOJ)? I'm sure it was at least 90%.. Apparently it was news in Dec 1998 when Windows marketshare dropped below 90% "for the first time"...
There's a big difference between Google's 63% and Microsoft's >90%.

If you're still using Windows 2000, you better make sure port 1755 is blocked, because apparently it is actively being attacked, even today.

Re:Linux for mobile devices
>Java is a great technology, but Sun was unable to build a viable business around it, and Oracle acquired Sun largely for litigation potential.
Well, it was getting $100 million per year for mobile Java, which also subsidized desktop and server Java development.
Until Google came around and had all the mobile manufacturers transition to Android, and didn't pay Sun a cent.
That's what this trial is about.
From Andy Rubin, father of Android:
"What we've actually been asked to do by Larry and Sergey is to investigate what technology alternatives exist to Java for Android and Chrome," the Google executive wrote, referring to founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. "We've been over a hundred of these and think they all suck. We conclude that we need to negotiate a license for Java.

I believe that there can be Linux boxes on actual shelves and penguins on boxes.
So you go hide now mama's boy, you hide with your Tux blankie and keep saying your magical nigger nigger faggot, or should I say shill shill astroturfer, like it is a magical word that will make all the bad go away. Re:One Era Ends To Make Way For Another
You are like those full retards that think the moon landing was faked, you realize this right? Where is your proof? CITATION PLEASE or go back to blowing Linus and the gang. Because unless MSFT suddenly moved their HQ to the middle of AR without telling anyone (and since it has been over 100 all week with a heat index of 106+ it sure as fuck ain't WA) then you are once again showing what a pathetic little cunt you are.
Where is your response to the links? To the retailers leaving in droves? To Linus himself? Can you not read, is that it? Is words on a page that say something other than "herp derp deh lunix is teh roxorz LOL!" more than your teeny tiny mind able to comprehend? I've actually written articles on what retailers need to sell your product, where's yours? Where have you contributed ANYTHING but mindless Linus blowing, ehh?
Kill yourself. Make this world a better place. You are alone because nobody wants you, it isn't gonna get any better, tomorrow your life will be just as empty as it is right now....kill yourself. Will your worldly goods (although what they'll want with a cardboard box and a tux blankie is beyond me) to the Linux foundation and walk in front of that train. You know you want to, you know the loneliness is eating you alive...kill yourself.
Me I have to get the beef ready for the BBQ, my sweet little half Cherokee GF has as usual invited every kinfolk she has and good BBQ takes tim to do it right. Of course you wouldn't know of such things, having never know a woman's touch or had anything other than MickeyD's. How sad, such a sad and pitiful little creature. I find that....delightful. Make the world a better place, remove yourself from it.Oh and in case you need the links again so you can cry before you get the rope, and for the elucidation of others (I know its a big word, look it up) I'll be happy to paste the paragraphs that makes you so mad, just as a special gift for the holidays.
HAY GUYZ, its Alex again, the full retard that even after being given example after example after example of why retailers like me refuse to carry his product, or how even Torvalds the great says Plans? We don't need no steenkin plans! written in nice little words small enough for his little mind to understand all he can do is clutch his Tux blankie and go "Waah! He won't drink the kooliad! Waaah, he won't accept fucked up drivers and give them to his customers! Waahhh he must part of the global conspiracy!
.
But what can you expect from a koolaid drinking freetard, that has completely accepted the "shit sandwich" design, as in "Here is a shit sandwich and since its free you have NO RIGHT to complain about the smell! Or the taste! Errr..or the fact that its a shit sandwich!" This is why there is a whole website dedicated To his bullshit and excuses and those like them. He reminds me of a small child that sticks his fingers in his ears and goes "La la la I can't hear you" as everytime this little Lintard troll shows up following me I post link after link proving my point and ALL he can say is that I must secretly be getting giant checks from MSFT. This is why even Penny Arcade writes cartoons about him and his pals.
Want to know why retailers won't carry your product, even though it is "free" and would save us licensing fees? Feel free to look at the above links, or Lintards like Alex who REALLY doesn't help your case any with their "La la la everything works and ur a shill!" kiddie bullshit. No go compile something sonny the men are trying to talk here

I call bullshit. I have had BPOS with my company for almost a year and have experienced several outages (I am keeping track because this was upper managments call against the advice of IT):

Re:Marketing
The problem I have is NOT flash, which as you said works pretty good, it is that you can't update Linux because the drivers WILL shit themselves and die!
Want proof? proof that nobody here can deny? here you go...why does Dell, one of the largest OEMs on the planet, have to disable the repos on every. single. Ubuntu machine they sell and deal with the hassle and expense of running their own repo, even for a small subset of the hardware they sell? Why because if they don't Linux breaks drivers oh fun oh joy!
It is THIS that I am talking about how mainstream is ignored by the geek brigade. linux is built BY geeks and FOR geeks and as geeks they think because THEY know how to recompile drivers, how to do forum hunts with a list of what make/model/rev of hardware they have, find a fix, and then "tweak" said fix because it was written for hardware B rev f and they have hardware D rev j that anyone can do it, and that is about as far from the truth as from here to Jupiter.
This is why small retailers like me won't carry your product even though it would save us a fortune it license fees, it is why Walmart and every other B&M that has tried offering your product has dropped it, why a 10 year old Windows beat the latest Linux on netbooks and why early adopters like ASUS has all but abandoned your product.
When your product is free, yet all these companies, from little ones like mine to fortune 500 giants, would rather pay money than use your product? That should tell you that you have a problem. Nobody cares if you have the coolest most secure low resource OS on the planet if in 6 months when the updates roll out the box shits itself and dies. The average user isn't gonna jump through flaming hoops just to be "free as in freedom!" and I can't afford to give away lifetime support.
Oh and PLEASE don't say LTS, as long as Linux software is tied to the kernel you might as well call that an out of date unpatched OS, because that is what it is. Oh and please don't say "Use Distro X" where X equals any distro other than the half a dozen I've already tried, since we all know that they are all based on a few "mother sauces" and so far I've tried Ubuntu, mint, PCLinuxOS, and Mepis, oh and Mandriva, and ALL had the same result. Updates roll out/ something breaks. With Windows they get on average a decade of security patches with NO driver issues. I have yet to even update a single machine twice, that equals roughly 18 months of support depending on the distro, without something breaking. Gentlemen that is simply unacceptable.
Now feel free to call me nasty names and mode me down, as I've noticed that anyone that says anything other than "gee isn't Linux perfect? Why it sure is Biff, and RMS's farts smell like roses!" gets modded to hell and called the Linux equivalent of faggot and nigger, that is shill and astroturfer.

Re:Awesome
According to the CCIE on the Jury, Terry Childs was attempting to show how indispensable he was to the city, and implicitly blackmail them into giving him his job back. He was smart enough to never explicitly say anything like that, since it would have landed him an even bigger sentence, but the charge of holding a city for ransom is nevertheless accurate.
Now fuck off, asshole.

Re:Oh, no
Problem is Obama failed at math. According to the article there are 1.9 million engineers in the US and there is an unemployment rate of 4.5% across all engineers. That means there's roughly 85,000 engineers without jobs, and Obama wants to train 10,000 NEW engineers?
Obama, you already have 85,000 engineers looking for jobs, you don't need 10,000 more unless you want 95,000 engineers looking for jobs -

wtf, seriously, wtf?
from the second article:
[Certified letters], which will also be mailed to affected students' parents or guardians, will indicate the date of Webcam activations, and the number of photographs and screenshots taken by each student's computer.
But the teenagers will be shown the images before parents.
"We are sending a notice similar to this one to your parents/guardians," [judge] Rueter's proposed letter read. "The District would like to give them an opportunity to view the images as well. But, you will be able to look at the images without your parent(s)/guardian(s) first, and if there are any image that you do not want them to see, you may let Judge Rueter know, and he will discuss with you how to handle the situation."
WTF?
What the fuck?
The parent of these kids are gonna get a list of dates and times for which their kids refuse to give them their illegal surveillance pictures? If these kids dont want illegal surveillance pictures mailed to their parents they have to "discus" it with a judge? What will the rules of these "discussions" be? Point counter point with a 20 minute rebuttal? What is there to discus? What possible counter argument could there be for "these are illegal surveillance pictures of my private life piss off you cranky old fool"?
How would this judge react if he got a letter in the mail saying "You have an opportunity to review the illegal surveillance pictures of you before we send them to your wife and if there is any pictures you want withhold just drop by at any convenient time and we can discuss terms... but we are still gonna send her a letter saying these pictures exist though"
If older teens consciously choose to pose for sexting its "kids these days are going crazy" but when the supposedly adult school staff and judges pull these crazy spying and blackmailing stunts its just okay?
Over the years, how much wiretapping evidence of organized criminal adults with money for proper lawyers looking out for their interest and their interest alone has this judge thrown out for being collected illegally? Could anyone imagine a letter like this being send to Tony Soprano?
How many times have US politicans used taxdollar to hire rent-a-geek to have hard drives with official documents wiped? How long did it take the CIA to decide to destroy videos of its torture sessions despite the videos having been subpoenad not just by innocent torture victims but by the 9/11 commission looking for evidence? When the wiretapping office of telecom Italia collected a terabyte of incriminating evidence as part of its own for-profit blackmail and intelligence operation on the countries corrupt and powerful, how many seconds did it take people to decide the database should be destroyed?
It would be weird if these kids didn`t end up living a life without computers and cell-phones. Odds are the lawyers will claim lost income from that as damages and keep the money, or at least the part that doesn`t end up in the pockets of the parents.

According to this article original versions of stuxnet attempted to spread via USB and while it did apparently spread it didn't spread far enough to hit the targeted system. Seems like the "spread via infected laptop" is the most likely.

fact checking on the Mueller FUD ..

"The actual damages Oracle is demanding are unclear, since many portions of the latest five-page document are blacked out of view in the publicly available version filed Monday in federal court".
"After years of pretending to be a friend of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), IBM now shows its true colors. IBM breaks the number one taboo of the FOSS community and shamelessly uses its patents against a well-respected FOSS project, the Hercules mainframe emulator", Florian Mueller
"IBM has no intention of asserting its patent portfolio against the Linux kernel, unless of course we are forced to defend ourselves", IBM

"You can become infected on Windows just by surfing the wrong website."
Only if you're running an unpatched machine.
Just like with Apple devices in fact:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9197184/Apple_patches_critical_drive_by_Safari_bugs
The reality is there's no difference between this and Windows Malware, it's already been mentioned in the news that there is a version of this that runs in userland and so doesn't actually need to ask for a username and password, just as there is Windows malware that does the same, and Windows malware that doesn't do the same and so also requires authentication to get away with certain things.
Apple fans can spin it however they want, this is EXACTLY like Windows malware, this is Apple kit suffering exactly the same things Windows has for a long while. This demonstrably dispels the myth that Apple kit is somehow more secure, but to be fair on both Apple, and Microsoft, it also demonstrates that for both vendors, the biggest security threat nowadays is generally the user.

Re:None of them
And here comes the religious dogma I was talking about! Isn't it funny that the argument against having stable functioning drivers always comes down to IDEOLOGY, with the rant most people link to going so far as to call those that refuse to hand over source "leeches" and hope the kernel futzing breaks their drivers?
I mean WTF is it to you if some do and some don't? Is that ANY different than right now? Nope, as you still have companies like Nvidia that makes binary blobs, only now you get to watch them break every six months. Does having open drivers keep Linux from breaking? Nope again as the open drivers break just as often thanks to Linus and his kernel fucking, because if you could look at it logically instead of a faith based perspective you'd see that there are only so many devs, and there are fewer of them than drivers to fix so drivers will ALWAYS be broken when Linus gets a wild hair up his ass, every. single. time!
And allow me to say that if your way "worked" in any kind of reasonable fashion retailers wouldn't avoid your OS like the clap which I can assure you we most certainly do. Not just all the thousands of mom&pop shops, dotting the entire country, but big names like Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, do you think they avoid your OS because of its "quality construction" or a secret conspiracy? NO! It is because they take the box home, run updates when the little icon tells them to and get a broken machine like it is 1993 all over again, and promptly take that broke ass shit back! And since we retailers can't sell used as new that means we take a hit on every return making Linux even MORE expensive!
As a final word allow me to give you proof, undeniable proof like a slap to the face your current way is broke ass shit. Now I'm sure you'll find some excuse, like "Use Distro X" or "You should buy hardware Y" but in the end all you will have is excuses because this proof should make even YOU take note! Now you and your fellow converts think we retailers are just full of it, that it should "just work" right? well when one of the biggest OEMs on the planet has to DISABLE the repos and spend considerable money and man hours keeping a badly out of date "corporate repo" just for their customers because if they don't the drivers WILL break then i'm sure you can see why both little guys like me and big guys like Walmart and OEMs like ASUS have washed their hands of your OS. I mean when fricking netbooks, a class of machine built around Linux strengths and which started out more than 30% Linux ends up completely obliterated by a decade old Windows OS it is high time to ask yourself "What are we doing wrong?" and I'd say basing your OS on religion instead of sound design practices and trusting your customers to make purchases that will benefit them (such as choosing FOSS drivers where possible so they have LTS) is a good example of why Linux is so far behind everyone else, and why even free you are getting hammered by an OS with a $100 barrier to entry.

Bring-your-own platform
This is an interesting change. At my former employer, they piloted a program to allow developers to develop on a Linux box rather than a Windows one, but it was not utilized by many and the desktop team found the support too painful for their taste.
Now looking at a different article from TFA: http://blogs.computerworld.com/18330/apples_mac_steals_windows_enterprise_sales
"What's driving the growth? Wolf writes, "Notwithstanding its premium prices compared with Windows PCs, the Mac should continue to grow faster than the PC market, propelled by the halo effects now emanating from the iPod, iPhone and iPad along with the international rollout of Apple Stores. The cost of ownership is emerging to be another key factor. Square Group chief, Darren King, notes, "Total cost of ownership (TCO) for a Mac vs a comparable Wintel device over 3-4 years is actually lower!" Think about that."
"Eight out of 10 organizations said they are "more likely to allow more users to deploy Macs as their enterprise desktops" in 2010-2011, up from 68 percent in the 2009 survey," the researchers said."
It's interesting that the coming decade might herald, rather than the switch we might have anticipated to Linux desktops (following the Year of Linux on the Desktop of course), a switch to desktop autonomy and self-governance at work.
