Re:More RAM
Try either of these: http://dx.com/p/175870 http://dx.com/p/208694 and run http://code.google.com/p/rk3066-linux/ on it.
I haven't powered my Pi up once since I bought the simpler one with 1GB of RAM. -

In your opinion.
Google blew it with google TV imo.
http://dx.com/c/consumer-electronics-199/hd-media-players-103/android-hd-players-191 This is one Chinese shop. They currently selling 560 Different googleTV devices ranging in price from $35-$200. Just becasue you wasn't interested does not mean everyone else wasn't...I went for a Raspberry Pi with XBMC, but It was a toss up.
The OUYA is great. I have just unpacked mine, and is of surprisingly high quality. The games are fun and cheap. I wouldn't hesitate in suggesting anyone else own one.
Opinions should be formed on experience.

Why RPi? Do you really need that HDMI out?
You can get Ralink 350MHz MIPS modules running OpenWRT for $16 INCLUDING SHIPPING

Re:Yeah, but $54 for a USB Wifi?
Srsly. Since when does a piddly $54 scare away a bona fide nerd. Having tools like this around when you have an epiphany on the crapper is priceless. I mean, come on, any of you could wipe your ass with $54 and still have plenty where that came from...
I was going to buy FOUR of them to hack and play around with small devices like the Raspberry Pi. Balked at the $216 price tag and never came back. Don't judge.
We have $25 single-board computers and $25 OpenWRT-enabled routers WITH USB SUPPORT (TP-Link WR703N).A $54 Wifi dongle is, no matter how you put it, downright stupid.
-
Re:Yeah, but $54 for a USB Wifi?
If I can spend 10% and it works, I'm happy.
Therefore, I am happy.
Enjoy your purity. I'll enjoy my $48.60 in leftover money.

Re:Yeah, but $54 for a USB Wifi?
Looks like the price of freedom is pretty steep.
It's not like we are starved for wifi dongles that "just work" on Linux without NDISWrapper. We're not in 2003.
eg: http://dx.com/p/802-11n-150mbps-wifi-wlan-wireless-network-usb-adapter-53538 $10 bucks including shipping, and there are TONS cheaper than this. I just looked for one that specifically said "Linux compatible".
As a matter of fact, I wish it "just worked".
I have one of these dongles, and last time I tried to use it I was hitting this bug:

Re:Easy solution
$35 was the target subsidized price. The target actual price was around twice that(which is pretty much the going rate for 7 inch tablets of unknown-but-suspect quality from nameless pacific rim OEMS).

Re:expensive and hard to get
Actually, no offense to the Pi guys, but the concept is absolutely not new. They were just really good at marketing.
For $42, you can get a fully functional Android mini-PC with a a Mali 400 GPU & a Cortex A8. Unlike the Pi, it has 1Gb of RAM and a significantly faster processor. Also unlike the Pi, they don't stiff you on the case or power supply. Add to the fact that the Pi's GPU is a binary blob and the Mali has some open source drivers, and you pretty much seal the deal on this "open" computer. Now, even before these mini Android PCs, you could go on Ebay and buy an ARM dev board for like ~$60.
This is just the same crap they throw in cell phones. There's absolutely no reason to put up with shipping times measured in months for a cell phone with some GPIO pins. -
Re:Any Ethernet Versions?
I have this one: http://dx.com/p/hame-mpr-a1-wifi-802-11b-g-n-wireless-3g-router-white-green-127771
It's the router equivalent of a swiss army knife.
Haven't tried it with any LTE USB stick yet, but I can't see why that shouldn't work.
In a pinch, you can even use it to charge your phone. You can insert a eg. 3G stick, and access it via wifi, eth or usb (allthough, isn't usb a bit redundant?).
A bit cheap-ish build, but hey, it works!

Re:The ban on knives was cosmetic at best
I thought it was clear from my post (it was in agreement to parent after all) that I do believe the ban is useless, so the airline policy was more sane. My ire was directed to the TSA rules that were depriving me of small (and usually expensive) tools when I would be provided with much more "dangerous" objects a few minutes later inside the plane. I know their rules are there just for a laugh (or scare), but it is even worse when they are laughing in your face.
I guess with the rule change I can start carrying multi-tools again, although I had found at least one useful tool that was never taken from the side pocket of my pouch: http://dx.com/p/ultrafire-stainless-steel-bottle-opener-with-screw-driver-and-wrench-tools-4642 -

well. maybe they're using 5 dollar steppers.. http://dx.com/p/28ybt-48-stepper-motor-with-uln2003-driver-dc-5v-126409
can't imagine other way to make it that cheap. (disc. I got a replicator and the reps on the rather expensive side imho for what you get..)

Re:recharging the Solar car at work
Here's a solar powered car for 2 dollars. I've got one, they're great fun.
-
Why all the fuss?
I can get something like this for a few dollars more and still run my Android apps. Also the link above has a touch screen. I just don't see why anyone is getting excited.
-
Re:Sounds
I would think something like this would be better then a USB stick. That way you can get a physical network connection and you don't have mouse, keyboard, headphone or any other USB cables hanging on one USB port.

Re:Been Done

Re:Still too expensive to add wifi
If there is USB support this should work for around $6. Probably crap range though

Re:Dear Apple
Here's one that costs $9.70. The Batteries cost $7.31. For a total price of $17.01. If you want more power (personally, I think the first one has more than enough, it can recharge my phone at least twice over) you can get this one for $10.40 which uses 4 of the same batteries I linked to. Total price with batteries for that unit would be $25.02

Re:Who, exactly, was traumatized?
This is all it is about, myself and my wife were both runners as children and frequently caused no end of grief in the street, in the shops, toy store, anywhere we could escape and explore for the sake of it.
We are both dreading when our little bloke can walk/run as he is almost certainly going to return the favour to us. Keeping him on a harness is the main way we will try to keep things in check, but something like the following two bits of gear are certainly worthy of considereation too

&
dx.com/p/mini-gsm-gps-personal-position-tracker-for-car-child-elder-pet-white-117009
They would be there not for us to keep an eagle eye on our kid a-la helicopter parenting, but as a bit of a safety net in case he repeats whar me and my wife did to our parents. -
Re:Avoid the ripoffs, buy them directly
http://dx.com/s/hearing+aid dealextreme is kinda consumer friendly. I haven't bought anything off aliexpress.com but I have bought a lot of very cheap crap off dx.com. Is it an alternative to everything else? Obviously not. Is it an alternative? Yes.
I can't promise that you'll get a custom-fitted, perfect hearing aid off dx.com. But, before you pay $10k for one you should probably browse there to see if it's a generic hunnerd dollah device. If some grubby crooks get outed in the meanwhile, all the better. I'm a capitalist at heart but I want to deliver value to my customers. If I can't do that, then I'd sooner stay in bed.
Some people want these Chinese sites to be secret, or argue that they're "taking jobs". Truth is, they want to protect their sources and charge you old money for new money. -
Re:What about...
I can think of lots of electronic devices which can be expected to last less than 2 years with normal use. There are whole websites full of electronics which I'd be pleasantly surprised to find still working after 2 years of use.
-
Re:"One laptop" program may be what you want
Ok..where are you finding a tablet for $150 and less??
This is probably the most user-friendly place to find a wide selection in that price range. But there's also AliExpress, some of the sellers there will sell you just one. Some will only sell you 2+ (or 5+ or whatever) but honestly you can probably find a pair of tablets with ICS, 512MB RAM and 8GB flash, 7" with capacitive touch and very very low resolution for $150
:)For around $200 you can get 10-point touch, ICS, 10" IPS, Allwinner...

Re:universal connector
Unfortunately, the original article is gone (though I did read it when it was first published). http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=199763 The dock connector costs $4 to license. I do know this; lots of people know this.
USB? If your a USB-IF member, free to use; otherwise, it's $2000 every 2 years for a vendor ID, with no per-unit costs. If you're producing more than 500 units, USB is cheaper; and that's assuming the connectors themselves cost the same. Here's a hint: the dock connector itself costs more than a USB port.
Take a look at this: http://dx.com/p/5-1-channel-usb-sound-card-adapter-black-59039?item=2
If these guys can sell this thing, shipped from Hong Kong, for $2.80 per unit ($2.02 in quantities of 10 or more), with a USB controller, DAC/ADC, USB port, 2 3.5mm jacks, and a case, how much do you think the USB interface and DAC/ADC added to the cost? Pennies, my friend, pennies. About the price of the resistors and capacitors used to control devices via the dock connector, actually.
As for your last point, if I give a damn about sound quality, I care less about duplicating hardware; I want that signal transmitted digitally and decoded as close to the amplifier as possible. Maybe I'm putting a higher quality DAC in my accessory than Apple put in my iPod? Or maybe it truly is a cheap accessory with a crappy DAC; but, then, how's the quality of an analog signal over a cheap connector? Do you see my point yet? -
Re:universal connector
I'm oh so sorry, that reply was a bit brash. Here's a controller with a DAC/ADC, on a board, with a USB port, 2 3.5mm jacks, and a case, for $2.80 (single unit pricing).
http://dx.com/p/5-1-channel-usb-sound-card-adapter-black-59039?item=2
Are you telling me they paid $4.92 for the USB controller in that? -
Re:My Investigation
I'm a developer who has wanted to break away from enterprise in this sort of game dev, I would throw money at this product to give it a chance had it not been for all the strange things about it.
You know you could just learn Android and Android game programming and not worry about the Ouya.
The developer's tools are free and there are tons of tutorials on the web and YouTube.
And it's not like there aren't a few hundred brands of Android smartphones, tablets and, yes, even media boxes.

Re:Speculation: Will somebody do an "EeePC"?
I have no relationship with any of these. I'm specifically pointing this one out because many others in this form factor supposedly are lacking ESD protection on the HDVI port. As such, this one specifcally addresses that complaint.
You can also buy a variety of devices from dealextreme. Such as mele a1000 and the mele a2000. Here's a hint, they have EXACTLY the same hardware on the inside. They just have a different case and the internal flash has been partitioned differently (2GB vs 4GB). The DX buys are not the cheapest to be found either. You can also buy from AliExpress. There also also a variety of other makes, models, and form factors. I've even seen bare boards. You just need to spend some time reading and googling.
As you can see, there isno point in waiting around for an rPi anymore.
Good luck.

Re:The Wired article has a pic of the controllerI also couldn't see a controller, but one of the reviews points out that it supports 2.4GHz mice and keyboards - but not bluetooth. Linked to http://dx.com/s/rii
hopefully that product can update to support additional codecs too.

Re:What would it cost to roll your own? Could you?
Hate to do this, but this is probably the better list, because it's sorted by number of reviews.
-
Re:What would it cost to roll your own? Could you?
Let me save you some trouble, go look here for some thirty buck wonders. I have no idea how much better a $3k hearing aid is than a $30 one, but it probably isn't a hundred times better.

Re:Keyboard and mouse...
http://s.dx.com/search/android+tv+box
don't believe the release notes, believe the released machines. many 2.3 flavors support usb host just nicely.
or install android-x86 on your pc. android has pretty much always had mouse and keyboard support.
