Re:Oh noes!
No, I'm referring more to the devices that never had an official build to start with. Typical example here - note that its vendor points out the inclusion of a nonstandard marketplace app in the description; this is almost certainly because it won't connect to the official market.

Re:Prices and locked down?
blah blah blah
Just add one of these solar chrged battery packs to your possessions.Mine sits in an outside pocket on my rucksack sucking up the murky light.
The power on my G1 sucks like a porn star, I already upgraded it to 2Ah. Because of the very problem you mentioned.
Now I can wake up anywhere and know I've got phone juice.

I may be missing something, but...
...given that you can buy ipod breakout boards on ebay with the serial connectors clearly marked, it doesn't seem to be a particularly well kept secret.
See http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Enhanced-Breakout-Board-Ipod-Iphone-Ipad-/370447835814?pt=UK_CE_MP3Access_RL&hash=item56406962a6 for an example.

Re:Wait a minute.
And how many independent hackers have access to SCADA? SCADA systems are not something that ends up just on any hacker's desk just like that. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=scada&_sacat=See-All-Categories Lots and lots of SCADA manuals, simulators and even some actual hardware. Locate in thirty seconds. I'm sure there is plenty more if you venture outside ebay. SCADA gear is not classified technology. True, it's not something you'll find in the home, but it is something a curious hacker could easily buy.

It will fit inside most (clients) laptops.
If you use their hardware, and they care enough, they can generally snoop your keyboard/mouse quite easily - display is a fair bit harder, and RAM still harder. -
Re:Artistic integrity? Right
You may be to young to remember when people actually bought albums for the express purpose of actually listening to them in their entirety.
I don't recall that these same bands ever stopped selling singles though...
So, why can they sell vinyl singles... and they did for years... but not MP3 singles? Again, artistic integrity has nothing to do with their position.

Re:Not really
But it isn't cool enough!
The pointer input device needs to be a TRACKBALL RING! ... Mother of god, it actually exists!
AN ACTUAL TRACKBALL RING!
Seems a little bulky admittedly, and wired connection, but still, A FRIKKIN TRACKBALL RING! -
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Hahahahahahaha!!
OMG! that's just fuckin' priceless :D
Best laugh I've had all day! Thanks for that.
Very much needed after hearing today that a friend committed suicide a few days ago.
Seriously though I thought he'd add in some sort of fresnel lens so you wouldn't have to focus your eyes real close , and why didn't he cut out the front panel of the saftey goggles?
It reminds me of this Radica stealth fighter toy which I have, unlike the Tomytronic 3D games (which I have all 7 variants of) it uses a single backlit screen and a fresnel lens, it also has a rudimentary motion sensor to steer the plane in the game. -
Re:Ebay SCAM
Two negative feedbacks? That doesn't sound like much. I've bought from sellers with more negative feedback than that, like this person: http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=omar.m786&ftab=AllFeedback
Makes your story seem fishy.

Re:About an Autobahn lane projector ?
b) They slow down the wheels (removing weight from the wheels is much more useful than removing weight from the frame, because of the angular momentum or whatever it is).
You've got detachable reflectors on your wheels? I can imagine that adds some weight.
They're normally like this. I think bikes sold in the UK have to have them (when they're sold, not when they're used). I used to have about 50 in various shapes, found in packets of breakfast cereal (like these).
In Netherland, they're standard on rims, and optional on the side of tires. It's just a thin strip, and doesn't add a lot of weight.
I've seen those on some tyres, but not on a rim.
After a lot of searching, I've found this, which is presumably what you mean. £12 seems a lot for four stickers though, motorbike-sized ones are £4 for four.

Re:There's cheaper and less limited way...
Seriously, I doubt you can get a prepaid SIM card easily/without giving your identity in Iran...
I'm not even sure that in France, where I'm currently writing, we can do it. I will check, it may be interesting. If by prepaid we mean what I'm familiar with as "pay as you go" (that is, you charge it with some money which you then spend, as opposed to being on a fixed contract) it is possible. You used to be able to get them off the shelf in Virgin Mobile shops (and wherever else, I'm sure). And if in doubt, eBay. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/?_nkw=SIM+card&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=SIM&_osacat=0

1900's Mechanical Cash Register
I'm not sure if this is what the OP had in mind, but I have a National Cash Register model that I believe is from either 1894 or 1904. (It's been in my garage for about 10 years, with the intentional plan of restoring it.)
All the keys and counter still work. Honestly, I'm amazed by the engineering every time I look inside.
I'm at work, so I can't verify 100%, but this listing from ebay is pretty close. (I do know it's a "dolphin" design.)
The drawer numbers don't match the register (a detriment for collectors' purposes), but it's still a cool piece of machinery. Weighs a ton. -

Re:Ditching Sun servers
Does this mean that there will be a market full of cheap(ish) second-hand Sun servers your average geek might be able to make use of?
Yeah,SUN ENTERPRISE 450 DUAL 300MHz SERVER WITH WARRANTY
A snip at £1,695.00 (although prices on Sun hardware do seem to have come down a bit) -
Re:We have the technology...

WOW, only 13 screws TOTAL???
Oh, and here I was believing that removing that battery was something difficult!
you can easily make a driver for them by filing down three points on a torx driver of the appropriate size
What's this "Torx" you mention? How does it taste? I think I've never heard of this stuff, I prefer Gatorade myself, but of course each to his own taste...
If you're not up for filing down a few points on a torx driver, you have no business fiddling around inside a laptop anyhow.
Last time I had a new battery in my Swatch the guy used a nickel to open the case. You say we need to file the point of a soft-drink can to change the battery in an Apple notebook? Sounds complicated...

Re:Liquidate...
uhm, whut? It's somewhat trivial to recycle PC equipment. Following your first port of call, there are a number of schemes that will take those PC's for you. For components that are entirely defunct, the local council will take them off your hands and safely recycle the materials for you.
Throwing IT junk in the trash is not the best solution.... -
How about the gold plated Optical cable
A listing on ebay lists High Quality 24K Gold Electro-Plated Connectors, High Purity OFC Copper for High Transmission Speed, Anti-Interference Ferrite Filters as well as Anti-Noise, High Density Shields & Ability to Restore the Signal, as some of the features of there TOS Link optical audio cable. I found this one very funny.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2m-Gold-TOSLink-Optical-Cable-TOS-Link-Lead-XBox-PS2_W0QQitemZ290243153497QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item290243153497&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C65%3A12&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Re:Right, because PayPal's better...
PayPal does indeed suck for sellers as well as buyers.
Really I don't object to them charging a percentage on transactions - it's still cheaper than a full merchant account. What I very much do object to is them charging twice what Google Checkout does for an equivalent transaction. What I object to even more is being forced as a seller to use PayPal - incidentally does anyone know who in the UK I should make a complaint about this to? It reeks of anticompetitive behaviour, as the Australians have realised.
eBay actually has Google Checkout listed as 'Not permitted' on their Accepted Payments page, and anyone who has ever tried to email eBay's support team to question this will know how hard it is to get an answer (they normally just spout irrelevant canned responses until you give up) but I did finally get an email from eBay explaining that I am allowed to use it but that I must offer it alongside PayPal and outside of the eBay checkout process.
I won't even go into PayPal's dubious dispute processes and lack of safeguards - they are well documented elsewhere, but again the argument of "don't use them" is rendered moot by eBay's policies. -

Re:Still working?
I would absolutely LOVE to find a 1581 lying around somewhere though.
Perhaps something like this might help?
No idea if they're any good, but the components are listed as genuine C= parts and 3.5" Amiga drives are easy enough to find. -
Re:SaltI have used that for years; as you say, a great app for keeping on something like this.
Of course, this would be an even better idea if it had BlueTooth inside too, but that is just a pipe-dream.

Windows XP licences on eBay
Original Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM packs with the installation CD and the product key / licence sticker are hot sellers on eBay. They're going for around GBP 50 (100 USD), while the Buy It Now price is up to GBP 75 (151 USD). Plus postage. See here:

Re:Auctions (if fair & open) yield the RIGHT p
"Uh. Rigging is the whole point of intellectual monopoly law. It's antithetical to free market capitalism. I don't know why you're surprised, america - you're about as capitalist as the soviets were communist."
People keep forgetting that the Internet routes around damage. There is no such thing as a monopoly when the whole operation can be moved to servers in another country. You're a seller in the US, and you want to sell to someone else in the US - just auction it off on ebay in the UK or Canada or france.

Rebekka's postHere's the text of the post, because I wouldn't expect it to stay in Yahoo's cache forever..
I have a LOT on my mind right now.. to be honest, i've rarely been so royally pissed off as i am today.
The photos shown above all have one thing in common (besides being rather lovely landscape photos):
They were all taken , without my permission, by the London based print-selling company Only-Dreemin. This company prides itself on offering its customers only the best quality canvas prints of the finest photos , by top artists.
What they fail to mention is that some of the photos they're selling prints of have been illegally obtained, and are being sold without the artists consent or knowledge.
In my case, a friend of mine came across their store on ebay and recognized one of my prints. (this was way back in january i think)
I looked into the matter and discovered 7 more of my photos being sold there. In the case of pictures 1, 2, 6 and 7, the image had been divided up into 3 vertical panels. ( Something i would never DREAM of doing myself. ) Furthermore, the images had been given new and exciting titles, like "Seraque II" and "Attica", "Dawn expander II" and " Joga" (barf)
I spent a good many days researching, going back thru their customer feedback, and was able to track back the sales of at LEAST 60 prints made from my images.
These prints sold for a total sum of 2450 british pounds (around 4840 US$ )
I gathered all the evidence , saved each webpage displaying my work , saved the list of customer feedback, printed all this stuff out and took it to a lawyer here in iceland.
She was confident that by sending them some well-phrased letters i'd be sure to get some damages out of them. After all, i had tons of incriminating evidence.
The letters did nothing other than make them take the images down from their site. Further letters got no response from them. My icelandic lawyer could do nothing else, so i was stuck with a bill and the infuriating fact that I, being only a non-wealthy art stutdent/ single mom in iceland, will have to accept that these people stole my work and made lots of money off it, and apparently are going to get away with it.
This is NOT OK BY ME.
I could think of little else to do than to at least tell people about this.
I have reason to believe that they've stolen images from other people, maybe other flickr users.
The reason i suspect this is quite simple. My photos were being sold under the bogus name of "Rebekka Sigrún" (the nerve of keeping the first name the same is somewhat amazing).
I saw a number of other photos being sold under that same artist name, and they werent mine. And obviously this Rebekka Sigrún doesnt exist.
Looking over the pictures i remember being sold under that name, it appears they've changed the artist name to "marco van eych". If anyone knows a landscape photographer by that name, let me know. i very much doubt he exists.
So i encourage everyone that has been displaying similar landscape photos on flickr to look at their site and see if they see something suspicious.
It would also be pretty cool if as many people as possible would send them angry letters, (address them to info@only-dreemin.com ) but that's just if you feel like it;)
ok. i've said my piece. Quite a load off my back. -

Re:Just Sell the TimeBeing an ex-Neopets player, that is nothing new. eBay doesn't permit anything that copyright holders can rightfully object to and has routinely removed auctions selling Neopoints for years.
eBay policy: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/vero/
Neopets ToS: http://neopets.com/terms.phtml #5
* requests for money by using your Neopets, Neopoints or any other Neopets property on third party sites or your personal websites (including Ebay) In my opinion, all this really means is that more will be sold on less well-known sites with an arguably higher proliferation of fraud. -

Re:Vote with your wallet
Here are a few currently running (UK) eBay auctions that have known-working-under-Linux cards (all are ralink, and I own one of each of these devices, unless some kind of version-bump has changed the chipset!) :
USB
PCI
PCMCIA
All should Just Work on, say, Ubuntu Dapper onwards (they did for me, at least), but I should note that I have not tried WPA with them. Obviously, eBay auctions are not exactly appropriate for corporate acquisitions, but hopefully this will help you in your search! -

Re:Old Sun hardware is always neat
If you can muck up an old SGI, those are pretty neat, too
They're not even so expensive these days, either. I saw some Indigos on eBay for free the other week - the guy obviously just wanted the space, for them to go to an enthusiast & thought this would the best way for them to get exposure. IIRC the special effects to The Wrath Of Kahn were rendered on a farm of these, so a screen capture or movie playing would help make the exhibit more multi-media and mainstream.SGIs are also gorgeously good looking. A 16 CPU Origin 2000 went for £620 on last week; I have to say it was quite the temptation.
Stroller.
