Re:I bought the MacMini for the form factor..
Interesting how these 'apparently' bright people can't work things out in their head.
Purchase a 7200rpm Hitachi drive, sell the old one on http://www.trademe.co.nz/ or http://www.ebay.com/ taking everything into cost, it'll be a matter of only paying an extra US$50 or so for a faster and larger hard disk - small price to pay for having a small and fast little pocket rocket for the desktop.
As for playing games; not to sound elitist, but isn't it getting pathetic when 20 somethings are sitting at home playing games? I mean, geeze. -

On a side note, does anyone know about W & G's Cracking Contraptions? It was annouced long ago but while the site is up I can't seem to watch them anywhere, and I can't seem to find a DVD of the shorts either. I'd love to see 'em. As they say on Ebay, Happy Bidding!

Re:Standards are a good thing....
I can tell that you're on the east coast. Here on the west coast, most of the IDs I see are from the less populous states west of the Mississippi. And yes, they're very plain. I've seen a few newer versions that have, *gasp*, actual holograms, but the majority that I've seen from states like Nevada, Iowa, etc. have no security features at all. Contrast this to my California driver's license, which has a dual photo, holograms, a background image, and a tracery of fine, multicolored lines across the whole thing.
You should try your "half hour with GIMP and an inkjet printer" ids at some college town bars - and THEN see how well you do.
But that's not what I said. I said that, barring the fact they're printed on plastic cards, many of the IDs I've seen look like something I could make myself. Wait a minute, with an investment of a few thousand dollars, I could start making them myself! And the newer, more secure versions wouldn't really matter since I could just copy an older design that's still valid! -

Re:Buy Dry Ice? Can't I make it?Sure. If your freezer goes to 11.
Or more exactly, if your freezer goes down to -110 F.
(Actually, it's usually done by pressure liquification of CO2, followed by evaporative cooling. If you have a source of LCO2, you can buy a gizmo to make it at home; cheaper models from other companies exist. Commercial production machines are a lot more pricey.)

BS certifications
Dipper Dan needs to model the fluid dynamics of his pipes as "anti-matter", "cursed-earth", and God-knows-what is extracted from the reservoir under the Seat of the King's Throne.
Because We know 386 hardware as used in the past will never be able to meet the demands of problems in the year 2005, or could they? This is a job for Sun Microsystems and its competitively over-priced solutions; to harness efficient supply-chains, innovate value-added paradigms, transform distributed partnerships, disintermediate mission-critical methodologies, facilitate distributed convergence, and no-less facilitate visionary channels of helping Dipper Dan to visualize the movement of feces! Surelym this must be no less than a $10,000 solution, am I wrong?
In other news, (affordable) commodity hardware, The Weather Channel-sponsored DRI Radeon graphics drivers, and intelligible internetworking of those hosts using the API developed into the Chromium Project all can be used to stuff any marketing guru. -
Re:eBay
Here's a good example. This item that just closed I'd been monitoring to see what it's going for on eBay. If instead of paying the typical Brick & Mortar price for the item they had done the teeniest bit of shopping around they would have found this, which pops up at the top of Google if you enter the product name, and is a pretty typical Web price for it. Even B&M Sam Ash is selling it for this same price. The eBay one also comes with 128M of smartmedia which goes for about $20, but also has $15 more shipping making the difference here about $136 (resealed) or $106 (brand new). Looking at the bidding history, there appears to have been a last-minute frenzy where one yayhoo kept bidding up and up finally unwilling to pay more, not yet having exceeded the previous bidders max (either that or time ran out).
It did tell me that if I want to buy one anytime soon, eBay probably won't be much help. (the item's pretty new and few have been showing up on eBay).

Re:eBayWhat you were doing there is called "Shill Bidding", and it's not only prohibited from eBay, but it may be illegal in some areas.

Alienware and Star Wars
Why the hell do shameless plugs for Alienware PCs make good stories but my submission on a life-size X-Wing fighter that was up for auction on eBay is rejected?
In an effort to offer some constructive critisism, perhaps they should add a feature that allows the editors to give a one-liner as to why every story I submit is rejected. Perhaps I don't talk good. But how the hell would I know that is why my submission was rejected?
I'm really starting to dislike this place. But I guess that's just my opinion.

ebay spoofsI got that ebay spoof, too, a while ago. That kinda scared me until I contacted ebay and they confirmed that, indeed, it was a spoof.

I just forwarded it to spoof@ebay.com which, sadly, I have in my address book because I have forwarded several suspicious emails to them. They always get back to me quickly and confirm that, yes, it was a spoof and to ignore it. Then they investigate the forwarded email take any actions they can against whoever sent it.
And every ebayer should have this page bookmarked: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/id-account-the ft-spoof.html
I agree, the phishers are getting better. Phishers like these try to trigger a knee-jerk emotional response and I bet it works way too often. -

Re:Xbox 360 controller for PC games
The original Xbox controllers were PC compatible, you just had to alter the cord. They were USB-based with a different plug on the end, which is easy to modify or you can buy a fairly-cheap adapter.
The Windows driver is a simple download, and it works really well. Apparently there's a Linux driver as well.
I went this route because I enjoyed the large, original Xbox controllers -- they were the first controllers that didn't feel puny in my large hands. -

They were (and are) wildly popular in the business community here in Australia.
They seem to make a statement "I know my tech but don't give a stuff about frivolities" which a certain type of person likes to send.

Re:Here we go againperhaps instead of small ip hoarding companies such as eolas suing microsoft, they should go after their customers - the US government.
Customers aren't liable for a business' violating a patent. To wit, Polaroid v. Kodak: Kodak made an instant camera that violated Polaroid's patent on same. Kodak had to stop making the infringing cameras and their film plus pay Polaroid damages + interest plus had to buy back all the infringing Kodak cameras from people that bought them. Side note: It's often amusing to search ebay for kodamatic instant, kodak instant or kodak colorburst and see just how damn many dumb rubes are trying to sell off a camera for which no film will ever again be available. Even more amusing is seeing one with a bid on it!

I don't think it's offensive, I think eBay just used a dictionary file to buy up every word it could think of. I admit, however, that could be seen in a bad light. In all fairness though, you don't get any bad ads if you search for slave, slaves, or the n-word, so I'm going to give Google the benefit of the doubt.

Who has ever heard of an original SONY Walkman going for collectors prices?
There are some on ebay, for the princely sum of $11, meaning they are just hovering above junk now.
The same thing will probably happen to these 1st gen digital players.
